TOP CABARET SHOWS/PERFORMERS 2003

Please note: The are choices made from shows actually seen personally
in 2003
I hate
this part of my job, I really do. I see so many great shows every
year, I find it nearly impossible to whittle the list down to 25.
There are three or four more names I wanted to add, but had no room
for. This year was a tough one, there was simply so much quality
in cabaret in 2003, I could list 50 shows!
The listings
appear in alphabetical order in each category, except for the fact
that the first three listed are shows I consider to be the very
best of 2003, and if I had to pick just one it would be Carolyn
Montgomery's "Reveille" show. Keep in mind, the listing is for shows
that I have personally seen - there probably were many other shows
that would be listed if I had a chance to see them.
I do not
distinguish between the various categories that others use in making
their lists. This year I simply have five categories plus one "wild
card" - "AS GOOD AS IT GETS," "THEY KEEP GETTING BETTER," "MORE
FUN THAN SHOULD BE LEGAL," "DOUBLE THE PLEASURE - DOUBLE THE FUN,"
"NEWCOMERS WHO MADE THEIR MARK" and "TAKING CABARET IN A NEW DIRECTION."
I also added a few shows that would have made the list except they
were not seen in NYC.
Remember,
every reviewer takes along their own prejudices, their own likes
and dislikes, and their own inner feelings, to any show they see.
I do not deny that there are certain types of performance that I
simply do not enjoy. They may appear on someone else's list, but
not here. So, this is my personal list.
