Marianne Challis hosts a fast-paced, joyous evening with great singing for a great cause on Thursday, March 11th at 7:00 pm at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909). She is joined in the show, "Chasin' The Blues Away - 2010!" by vocalists Kevin Dozier, Laurie Krauz, Reagan Stone and Lisa Viggiano. Musical director is Daryl Kojak and director is Scott Barnes. Proceeds from the show will go to BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS . There is a $25 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.
"Broadway Bombs II" will be presented at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) on Thursday, March 11th at 8:30 pm. Celebrating the musical treasures unearthed from within some of the Great White Way's most infamous duds, Broadway Bombs 2.0 is a loving comic tribute to the phenomenon of the musical flop. Featuring wise and worldly historical perspective courtesy of the Joe Allen Players, Broadway Bombs 2.0 runs the gamut from the The Grass Harp to Glory Days. The show also features a number or two from a certain Stephen King inspired fiasco. The Joe Allen Players cast includes Avery Ragsdale, Jermaine Blackwell, Danny Visconti, Jessica Anderson, Alece DeLuca and Dana Mierlak. Direction is by John Gray and musical direction is by Barbara Anselmi. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
Gay Marshall will reprise her concert series, "PIAF: Queen of Heart", at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Thursday, March 11th at 7:30 pm. The concert series is based on Marshall's CD, Gay Marshall Sings Piaf, La Vie l'Amour. The show is Marshall's original take on Piaf, not the traditional perception of her as a tragic icon. Instead, she presents a versatile powerhouse of heartwarming and heartbreaking emotion, full of personality and humor. She will be accompanied live by a five piece ensemble. The original arrangements by Marshall and Paul Bevan are a modern take on a classical theme. Marshall, who played Diana Morales in A Chorus Line on Broadway and created Grizabella in the French production of Cats, has lived and worked mainly in Europe since she fell in love with French photographer, Jean-Louis Blondeau (Man On Wire). Her recent local appearances have been received with rave reviews and full houses. Her new show, "In Love Again" features her signature hits "I Love You Today" by her mentor Steve Allen; "Cabaret," which was her RCA hit recording even before the Broadway musical opened; and "Step To The Rear," which she performed for four years on national commercials for Lincoln Mercury; and one of her most requested songs, "Guess Who I Saw Today." A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. Gretchen Reinhagen's "Special Kaye: A Tribute to the Incomparable Kaye Ballard" has been invited to continue its run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 ). Jazz legend Annie Ross continues her unprecedented, record-breaking, multi-year run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), Tuesday nights in February at 9:30 pm. Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", "Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. "Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. There is a $25 cover plus a $15 minimum.
