DEAR
DIARY:
"What?"
September 11, 2001
- I woke up with the saddest feeling in my heart. Went back to sleep.
Thought maybe I had a bad dream. But it was no dream. Got up, made
coffee, turned on the tube. It was like watching the paper movies
I used to make as a kid. Draw a tower, then move the plane a bit closer,
then on another sheet, draw it closer and closer and closer . . .
A cartoon tower, that's what it looked like. A Disney Movie, surreal
..... but this horrible feeling of sorrow.
I opened my door and stepped
out into the hall. Two technicians were working on our elevator. One
stood near my door, anxious, dialing his cell phone over and over.
"Are you alright?" I asked.
"My best friend," he said,
"He's an electrician in the World Trade Center. I can't reach him."
I tried to comfort him, then went back inside. Moments later, a tap
on my door. It was him.
"I got him. He's working
in Tower 2," he laughed, "Thank God, he's alright." We stood a moment
talking, relieved and grateful ... We hugged. Two strangers.
I went inside and flipped
on the TV. In that instant Tower 2 began its descent. Down, down,
down, like a paper movie. I was stunned. The tower was gone, and I
knew his friend was gone too. I went to the door and opened it.
"What?" he said, looking
at me, tears running down my face, "What?"
