DEAR
DIARY:
September
25, 2001
Waking up today and yesterday
was like opening my eyes into a dream, as if my whole reality was
encapsulated in the two weeks since the toppling of the World Trade
Center, so fiercely was my attention fixed on that frozen scene.
And my heart, frozen, as
well, seemed to view the horror without the slightest bit of emotion.
I was careful, helpful, listening to others, listening to the emotions
of others, detached and philosophic. There was an unreality to everything
I said and did, everybody I talked with.
Until yesterday. Once again
I saw Bette Midler sing "Wind Beneath My Wings." I saw her again today,
and I cried out loud both times.
I thought of all my friends
in the cabaret world ... Erv and Stu and Tessa and Charlie and Margot
and Trudy and Greg and Larry and Gregg and Ryan and Zack and Sue and
Luisa and Marnie and Francesca and Paul and so many, many others ...
and I thought, "God, thank you for such beautiful people," the loyal
friends who, in all of our lives, lift us higher, just by being there.
And I thank you all, thank
you so much.
Colette
