HERE & THERE
Happy New Year! Let's hope
so! 2006 sort of ended for me on a sad note with the closing of DANNY'S
SKYLIGHT ROOM (346 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/
) - I was at Scot Albertson's CD release show on the 30th at 9:30 pm,
the last official cabaret show to be presented in THE SKYLIGHT ROOM.
Rumor is that the West 46th Street area will now get yet another Irish
Pub (the former ENCORE on West 47th has already gone this route).
For me, on
a personal (and non-cabaret related) note, I was further saddened
by the passing of President Gerald Ford. I was attending college in
Grand Rapids, MI when I came of age to vote, and "Gerry" Ford the
congressman from that area, and on the ballot the first time I voted.
He was loved by just about everyone in the area and was re-elected
every two years without fail. He worked tirelessly for the folks he
represented, and in the 6 years I lived there I never heard a single
bad word about him - regardless of party affiliation. Like everyone
else, I voted for him each time around. I have been sort of glued
to the TV all weekend, and the speeches and interviews (and views
of a now very-changed Grand Rapids) brought back many memories. I
must admit that I became much less involved in local politics since
I moved back to the NYC area. I have yet to meet an east-coast politician
of the character and integrity of this singular leader.
I have spent
the past two weekends revising the website - please take a look and
send in your comments and ideas. Thanks to the computer upgrade last
February, with a faster, more powerful computer, expanded memory and
the addition of another external hard drive, these changes can be
made a lot faster than before (and a complete backup on hand of all
files in case I want to go back a step).
Looking back on 2006, there
have been many "sad" events in addition to the closing of DANNY'S SKYLIGHT
ROOM on the 30th (the restaurant is apparently open a few more days).
Another venerable venue CAJUN (129 Eighth Avenue, NYC) was forced to
close as a victim of NYC's booming real estate market (the entire block
is being razed for a new luxury apartment building). THE CABARET AT
ODETTE'S (South River Road, New Hope, PA) closed earlier this year after
suffering a series of floods in the area. And also closing on the 31st
of December, after a seven-year run was LIBBY'S CABARET (3401 Northside
Parkway NW, Atlanta, GA).
More on the
personal side, three long time friends (and avid supporters of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE) passed away in 2006 - virtually weeks apart: the multi-talented
singer/songwriter/performer/inspirational speaker Dottie Burman, cabaret/restaurant
owner/manager Richard Hendrickson and singer/songwriter Diane McCulloh.
And just a little tyke, and favorite of the residents of "Hell's Kitchen,"
Hazen Kennedy passed away late last year as well. Many cabaret performers
were involved in various benefits organized by Caroline Montgomery
on his behalf.
But there
were many exciting events - inspiring events - as well last year.
Several new clubs were added to the list of venues I maintain (now
totaling 370), and I make special mention of THE METROPOLITAN ROOM
(34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
), which has set a new standard for venues in NYC. Bob Egan moved
his cabaret offerings to STOCKTON INN (1 North Main Street, Stockton
NJ - 609-397-1250 - http://www.bobegan.net/stockton-inn.html
) when ODETTE'S closed - and has plans for expansion of cabaret in
the Delaware Valley area in full swing.
A new club
called PHASES BAR (2615 Oaklawn Avenue, Dallas, TX - 214-528-2026
- http://www.phasesbar.com/
) just opened and an old pal of mine, Amy Stevenson presents "Mama's
Party" showcase and open mic there weekly. Another new club, STERLING'S
UPSTAIRS (4349 Tujunga Avenue, Studio City, CA - 818-769-0905 - http://www.vitellosrestaurant.com/
) brings to the Los Angeles area another long-needed cabaret venue.
In London, PIZZA ON THE PARK (11 Knightsbridge, Hyde Park Corner,
London - 020-7235-5273 - http://www.pizzaonthepark.co.uk/
) is reviving their live-entertainment program. Here in NYC, Phil
Bond has revived live entertainment offerings at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE
BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/theater/schedule
). The list goes on.
Looking ahead to 2007, I
expect a lot of great things on the horizon, especially here in NYC.
MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) has new leadership
and has reversed course after the ill-advised changes made last year
to the MAC AWARD voting process. New President Ricky Ritzel has his
work cut out for him as he works to bring the organization back from
the brink of collapse. MAC saw the "handwriting on the wall" with
the disaster of the 2006 MAC AWARDS show (one reputable source estimated
the attendance at 300 in a space that seated over 1000). A lot of
members "voted with their feet" and abandoned their memberships. MAC
(Manhattan Association of Cabarets) will be holding a Post-Holiday
Night Out at THE TRIAD (158 West 72nd Street, NYC - http://www.Triadnyc.com/
) on Monday, January 22nd from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, open to all MAC members
and their guests. I hope I can make it - I don't get to many events
at THE TRIAD since my knee operation (20 months ago), since to get
there from my apartment in Queens I need to take 3 subways or 2 subways
and 1 bus, with all the associated stairways (including that final
stairway up to the cabaret room) but I shall try. Just about every
other club in town can be reached from here with just a single subway
line.
Time has flown by this morning,
and I must send this issue off. I have a list of New Year's Resolutions
to rewrite and polish, plus some more comments on the writing of reviews
(we wrote on this topic a few months ago and have finally come to some
conclusions). I also have to send out a report on 2006 and 2007 for
all members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. So time to close off.
THIS & THAT
I've added this new section
to mention news items that come my way but unconnected to any specific
cabaret event, or at lease of a more general cabaret nature. For example:
Some of you may have read/heard
that The Lambs is closing. According to The Lambs' VP Mark Baron, this
is very incorrect information. The Lambs, America's first professional
theatrical club, established in 1874 is still very much alive. The confusion
stems from the theater on Manhattan's West 44th Street, called THE LAMB'S
THEATER. The Lambs Inc. erected that building in 1905; designed by Stamford
White it was both their clubhouse and theater. In 1974 The Lambs [club]
left the building during hard times; it was decided to save the Club
by selling the building. The Church of the Nazarene bought the building
and operated it as a church, 'soup kitchen' and later rented out the
theater which became the home of The Lamb's Theater. (The name, apparently,
was to cash in on the legacy of the Club). That landmark building will
soon be partly demolished to build a 150-room hotel. Meantime The Lambs
[club] continues and has resided at 3 West 51st Street, NYC since 1975
where it is vibrant and continues its 132 year journey as a social club
for professionals of the arts. For more information, see http://www.the-lambs.org/
.
A few weeks ago we happily
noted in the newsletter and on the website that THE CHESTNUT ROOM at
TAVERN ON THE GREEN (Central Park at West 67th Street, NYC - 212-873-3200
- http://www.tavernonthegreen.com/
) after a long hiatus, would be re-opening with a cabaret/jazz series
that will feature some of the finest performers in the tri-state area.
Now we must tell you the sad news that the series has been cancelled
- it seems they ran into some scheduling conflicts. (This seems like
some kind of deja-vu, doesn't it?)
Here's an item from Singer/Pianist
Sammy Goldstein who just completed his contract performing with Princess
Cruises. He started the gig with the inaugural of the brand new Crown
Princess around the Caribbean (the ship that "tilted" off the coast
of Florida in July), then performed on the Regal Princess around Alaska
for two months, then on the Pacific Princess doing Southeast Asia, South
Africa and Australia until mid-November. His final move was to the Sapphire
Princess, which just finished a tour Southeast Asia and China. (Why
did I ever quit taking those piano lessons!)
Concerning
the "tilting" of the Crown Princess, Sammy reports, "It was like a
scene out of the 'Poseidon Adventure.' It was a beautiful day, with
calm seas, and for no reason we suddenly started tilting at a very
sharp angle. I was in the Atrium at the time, in the direction of
the tilt, and everything just started sliding across the open floors
-- furniture, bottles, dishes, potted plants AND people. Everything
that wasn't bolted down went flying. As I looked out the window behind
me (on Deck 5), it was under water. We later learned that the water
came up past the windows of Deck 6. People on the open decks and on
private balconies had to hang on to railings to avoid being thrown
overboard. And, passengers that were in the swimming pools were literally
washed out and sent crashing into the plexiglas walls, only to be
covered by the pool water and hit with deck chairs. The incident only
lasted about two minutes. But, during those two minutes, practically
everyone on the ship thought we were turning over. All in all, there
were two critical injuries, 20 serious injuries and about 70 semi-serious
injuries. Several hundred others had minor cuts and bruises."
"The original
reason for the 'tilting' was given as a 'computer error' (saying that
the rudder locked to the left, causing the ship to go in a circle).
But, five days later, the reason was changed to a 'human error.' Also,
the original tilting ('listing') of the ship was reported as 38 degrees.
That was later changed to 15 degrees. I guess we'll never know the
real facts."
Speaking of cruises, Florida-based
Big Band/Jazz singer Lorri Hafer will be performing on four 2007 "MUSIC
OF YOUR LIFE BIG BANDS AT SEA" cruises on the MSC Opera, sailing round
trip from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, visiting ports in Mexico, Costa Rica,
Panama, Columbia, Curacao, and the Dominican Republic. Joining Lorri
and emceeing the "Music Of Your Life" musical events onboard will be
legendary DJ and NYC "morning mayor" Herb Oscar Anderson, Buddy Morrow
and The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Al Long as "George Burns", and Michele
Anastasio in a "Tribute To Patsy Cline". The cruises are from January
14th-25th, February 5th-16th, February 27th-March 10th, and March 21st-April
1st. For more information, visit the "Music Of Your Life" website at
http://www.musicofyourlife.com/
. Just watch out for those sharp left (port) turns, Lorri!

SUPER SIDEBAR ADS NOW AVAILABLE
ON THE WEBSITE
The current REGULAR SIDE-BAR
ads are seen only on the opening (home) page. Several folks have asked
if there was a way that their side-bar ad could be seen on every page
of the website, all the time. With over 5000 pages on the site it would
be impossible, but I have been revising and recoding all the "index"
and all the "most visited pages" as well as all new pages of news, reviews
and other items to make it possible for a side-bar ad (in the right
column on the pages "above the fold" except for the opening page) to
be seen on hundreds of pages - all the time. These SUPER SIDE-BAR ads
- twice the size (vertical) of regular side-bar ads are available for
$125 per week (membership discounts allowed). There is a 2-week minimum.
After 2 weeks continuous, the cost drops to $100 per week. If the banner
runs for 9 weeks, the 10th week is free. Only two SUPER SIDEBAR ADS
will be available per week. Banner size is 180 x 360 pxls at 72 dpi.
Gif, and Jpg banners accepted (no "flash" banners at this time). Banners
will appear in the right sidebar at the top two positions - first ordered
and paid goes in the top "Tiffany" position. In addition, SUPER SIDEBAR
advertisers will have their offering mentioned in both the MONDAY and
MIDWEEK issues of CABARET HOTLINE and the both ads will be featured
in rotation on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE weblog pages as well. Click
on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website
for details on all sizes, styles and specs.

HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing
on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send in your flier, press release
and/or other promotional materials clearly showing the discount offer.
That information will be used as the basis for the MEMBER DEALS page
notice, as well as for the newsletter listing. Please be sure to check
with the venue where you are performing to be sure that these discounts
will be honored.
Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee that
the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact the
parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove
the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE
NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows
around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET
NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at
least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show,
CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do
not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release
with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting
backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of
those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead
to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings
request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in
and use for the website).
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter
I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find
published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?
I happen to know that a lot
of folks never get down to this part of the newsletter, so to those
few reading this I give a warning - if you are an atheist skip what
follows.
Several times
over the past three or four months I have been at wits end as to what
to do about my finances. Several times I have found myself with less
than $50 in the bank and no anticipated income until the next Social
Security check - weeks away. Yet, somehow something always seems to
happen to allow me to continue. Last month my cell phone was disconnected
as well as my cable TV, and I was just a few days short of losing
my phone/DSL line. Yet a few days later I had enough funds in the
bank to get caught up - a special donation from an old friend, unexpected
banner ad orders, and several membership donations "out of the blue"
including a CRYSTAL membership from someone I just happened to sit
next to at a cabaret show! Coincidence? Of course not.
I had gotten
used to lying awake all night worrying - but the events of even the
past few days (another financial crisis solved even before I had to
commit it to prayer) have convinced me that worrying is a waste of
time and energy. I am reminded of that little quote at the bottom
of every e-mail I send out. Discouraged? No more. My main resolution
for 2007 is to keep moving ahead and trust that I will continue to
be blessed. I have missed not a few meals lately (Chris and Steve
at the METROPOLITAN ROOM have no idea how many times their little
pies were my main meal of the day), but have never gone to bed hungry.
Your membership
donations support this publication and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website. If you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and would like to
support us, why not join as a supporting member? Your donation is
most important to me, not just to pay for my food, cable, phone, DSL
and rent, etc., but also as a confirmation of your appreciation. Can
you please help?
For information
on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, just click on the
JOIN HERE button on the website. You can even make your membership
donation by credit card, using PayPal. If you prefer not to use a
credit card and PayPal, you can send a check made out simply to Stu
Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120,
NY, NY 10036.
I realize that there is probably
far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading,
but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their
shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most
important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on
my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search
engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your membership donations make this all
possible.
On Monday we return to our
schedule of two newsletters per week - Monday and Thursday. See you
all on Monday! Once more, HAPPY NEW YEAR!
And that is
just about the way it was.
