HERE & THERE
While we see news reports on TV of snowstorms and avalanches elsewhere in the USA, here i NYC we have had a bit of a "winter heat wave" with temperatures actually hitting 72 degrees over the weekend and not a single flake of snow so far the entire season! That all is beginning to change with a cold front finally hitting the city (preceded by winds and rain last night and this morning) and snow flurries coming in as early as Tuesday night. Oh well, it was great while it lasted.

I once again solicit your comments on the changes we have been making on the website - not a complete redesign but a major one. The opening page is the major change, with more details on each item, but items appearing only a few days. The left column lists all the news items concerning shows currently running as well as a listing of recent CD releases. The center column will include mini-excerpts from news items recently added plus mini-items on shows offering discounts to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members, plus links to specific geographical cabaret areas where news, listings, venues and reviews can be found.

Saturday night, after attending three cabaret shows, I dropped in at DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM (346 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-265-8133 - http://www.dannysgrandseapalace.com/ ) for their closing night party, with Jerry Scott leading the festivities from behind the piano. It was nearly 12:30 pm, but no one seemed to be in a hurry to go home (except me, I guess). There is still some confusion as to exactly what will be moving in to this space - rumors run from a Bed & Breakfast to another Irish Bar. Stay tuned.

I had an interesting conversation with a performer who recently ran a banner ad on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE: Apparently, except for some e-mails sent, the banner ad (and the press release we published on the website and in the newsletter) was the only means used to spread the news about the show. No post cards, no mailings, no ads anywhere else. Yet the show was sold out! Of course this performer is very popular (and one who always presents very entertaining shows), so CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE can't take all the credit. I can't promise sold-out shows when you run a banner, but I can promise that (unlike post cards, fliers and print ads that are here today, gone tomorrow) your ad will be seen hundreds and possibly thousands of times a day, day after day, for the full run of the banner - there is a 2-week minimum. And your show will be mentioned in every Monday issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, sent to over 2,700 subscribers (and in the Midweek issue as well if a member discount is offered).

I'm "sitting on a story" - I can't release it yet and have been waiting all morning for an "OK to send." It involves the winners in the cabaret category for the 2006 NY NIGHTLIFE AWARDS coming up on Monday, January 29th at 7:00 pm at THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC - 212-997-1929 - http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/ ). I was one of the judges in this category so I was sent the results last week, and I am very pleased that so many of my friends have won or were finalists, including a few who will be performing in NYC soon (one of whom is running a banner ad on our website!). This issue of the newsletter will be sent out at noon today, and if you are reading this item it means the official release has not yet been received and if it comes in before the Midweek issue on Thursday, we will send out the report in a special NY BULLETIN SERVICE e-mail.

If you want to add your e-mail address to this special subscription service, go to the website and click on the button marked NYC AREA NEWS, then click on the blue button on that page marked NYC BULLETIN. Fill out the form, send it in, and your e-mail address will be included.

FIRST A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS

SUPER SIDEBAR ADS NOW AVAILABLE ON THE WEBSITE
The current REGULAR SIDE-BAR ads are seen only on the opening (home) page. Several folks have asked if there was a way that their side-bar ad could be seen on every page of the website, all the time. With over 5000 pages on the site it would be impossible, but I have been revising and recoding all the "index" and all the "most visited pages" as well as all new pages of news, reviews and other items to make it possible for a side-bar ad (in the right column on the pages "above the fold" except for the opening page) to be seen on hundreds of pages - all the time. These SUPER SIDE-BAR ads - twice the size (vertical) of regular side-bar ads are available for $125 per week (membership discounts allowed). There is a 2-week minimum. After 2 weeks continuous, the cost drops to $100 per week. If the banner runs for 9 weeks, the 10th week is free. Only two SUPER SIDEBAR ADS will be available per week. Banner size is 180 x 360 pxls at 72 dpi. Gif, and Jpg banners accepted (no "flash" banners at this time). Banners will appear in the right sidebar at the top two positions - first ordered and paid goes in the top "Tiffany" position. In addition, SUPER SIDEBAR advertisers will have their offering mentioned in both the MONDAY and MIDWEEK issues of CABARET HOTLINE and the both ads will be featured in rotation on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE weblog pages as well. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website for details on all sizes, styles and specs.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, ON THE BLOG AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website).

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

Please drop me a line regarding your thoughts about the revised format for the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. By eliminating the listings section (just including links to the listings on the website) I am able to include more news items and still send out a shorted issue. But you might prefer the former style. I won't know unless you let me know. Please remember that complete listings for all areas can be found on the website - as complete as I can make them. If you find an item I have overlooked (or find a listing for a venue that is no longer operating), please drop me a line. There are over 350 venues I am trying to keep you posted on (I added 7 new venues this week).

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
