HERE & THERE
The cold is finally here and seems that it will be around for a while, with some snow forecast for the weekend. Meantime, I have been a little under the weather, and I am not quite sure why. I was out on Tuesday night to attend the benefit in memory of Dottie Burman at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ) - it was totally sold out - and afterwards stopped for a quick snack before catching the subway back to Queens. There must have been something wrong with the food because within an hour my tummy was feeling queasy and when I got home I could not get to sleep. I spent the night tossing and turning, and when my stomach finally settled down, it was nearly 10:00 am on Wednesday!

Making matters just a bit worse is the cold - it hovered in the low 20s most of the day yesterday, and rather than risk getting sicker by going to any shows last night I set about resting and relaxing. I am not quite sure if I will make it out and about tonight. My room seems to be the coldest one in the apartment since the two large windows on one wall seem to be on the windy side of the house. I am sitting right now in front of the computer with a blanket wrapped around me to keep out the cold.

I ended up spending most of yesterday in bed, unable to eat very much and even skipping my usual morning cup(s) of coffee. I was able to get about a half dozen cabaret news items on the website, but not as many as I planned. So, this issue will be a little on the short side so I can spend the rest of the day getting caught up with the press releases and other items that I still have on hand. At least I got all the January news items up, and even a few early February items.

I hope that the non-NYC subscribers were not too bored by the rather lengthy comments on MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) in Monday's issue. I want to continue a bit today (as promised) with some suggestions - and actually many of these comments can be applied to cabaret organizations anywhere.

THE PRIMARY TASK OF ANY CABARET ORGANIZATION SHOULD BE TO FURTHER AND PROMOTE THE ART AND ARTISTS OF CABARET. This is what we are about here at CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, and this is what any organization of cabaret performers, fans and venues should concentrate on. My impression of what went wrong at MAC was that their efforts all seemed to be directed at the Awards phase of their program, and in an attempt to restructure the awards process they lost sight of what should be their primary objectives, and lost the support of many in the cabaret community.

THE VERY CONCEPT THAT THE MAC MEMBERS ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO DISCERN QUALITY IN CABARET WAS A SLAP IN THE FACE TO ALL. Over the years the MAC voters have done an extremely good job of choosing the best and the finest in cabaret to receive the annual awards. Now, everyone has a different view of what constitutes quality cabaret, but to turn over the decision as to what is to be recognized to a small committee flies in the face of what the awards are about: the choice of the membership. To eliminate some performers/performances from the nominations based on the opinions of a few takes away that premise.

For example, very often I find that cabaret shows that I feel are terrific are panned by one or more other journalists and reviewers. And very often I discover my negative feelings towards a particular performance are contradicted by other reviewers. I sometimes wonder if I have seen the same show (and sometimes this is the case). Recently another reviewer took issue with my high praise for a performance - we saw the show on different nights, and apparently there were some technical issues and even some health issues that caused the two performances to be so different. When hundreds of voters take part in the choices instead of a "chosen few" there is less likelihood that a very fine show would be cut from the running because of a single poor performance.

EVERY CABARET ORGANIZATION NEEDS TO TAKE IMMEDIATE STEPS TO BURNISH THE IMAGE OF CABARET. It is very strange that in the past few years, the art of cabaret has been mocked and degraded by folks who do not understand the unique and important place that cabaret performance plays in the world of live entertainment. Cabaret performers themselves often take part in this movement - some even taking on the label of "jazz performer" - some even avoid the word "cabaret" in their press releases. Many of these performers originally counted on the cabaret venues and patrons to build their followings and perfect their craft, but when they reached a certain level, turned their backs on cabaret - almost rewriting their own biographies to eliminate the word cabaret!

Performers often joke about how there is "no money to be made" in cabaret. Well, cabaret is mostly "self produced" performance, so indeed the performer bears the brunt of the costs. But every other form of the live entertainment arts is in the same boat, with the losses hitting the investors and sponsors. If cabaret venues received the same investor, sponsor and public funding, the tax breaks and press coverage that is available to other forms of live entertainment, things might be a little different. I also feel that there is an inordinate amount of homophobia directed towards cabaret, in spite of the fact that the proportion of gays performing and supporting cabaret is not much different than present in other live entertainment areas. I suppose it is partly because cabaret performers are more open about their own personality and sexuality that cabaret has been singled out in this way.

A suggestion to MAC would be to contact the other cabaret organizations and enlist them all in a coordinated effort to get the truth about cabaret out to the public. Perhaps as a group they could enlist a few marketing and/or promotion experts to advise on methods to bring about this change in the public perception about cabaret.

GOOD PRESS RELATIONS ARE A CORNERSTONE OF GOOD PUBLIC RELATIONS. All cabaret organizations must maintain good relationships with members of the press (print and electronic). Instead of responding to criticism with attacks, name calling, threats, etc., when criticism is leveled there should be immediate attempt at dialogue in private between the organization's leaders and the critic. Writers are expected to express their own point of view - and only when it comes to questions of fact should the cabaret organization react - and that should not be done in public, but rather one-on-one so that the writer has a chance to write a correction of factual errors (just be sure you have your facts straight). It is significant to note the large number of cabaret press writers who opted not to attend last year's MAC award show.

SECRECY BREEDS MISTRUST. Cabaret organizations should be as honest. complete and straightforward as possible in communicating with their members. Financial matters should be openly revealed and discussed. If there is nothing to hide, why hide it?

MAC MEMBER VENUES SHOULD BE ASKED TO RENEW THEIR MEMBERSHIPS ANNUALLY. Currently there is a 1-time, lifetime membership required (which is lower than the regular membership fee). Requiring annual renewal would provide some increased income to MAC, but more importantly would require MAC to show annually to the venues, as it must do annually to the other members, that being a member of MAC is important and valuable. I know of one instance where a club held off joining MAC because they could see absolutely no value to the club of a MAC membership. Annual renewal would also provide members with a clue as to how much the venues support their performers - by joining MAC they demonstrate their continued support of the cabaret community and its programs and goals.

In this connection, I have lost count of how many years ago it was promised at a MAC annual meeting that special decals were being created that could be displayed prominently at each member club. I get around to a lot of clubs and have yet to see such a decal displayed.

I will have more to say on Monday. Stay tuned.

THIS & THAT
I've added this new section to mention news items that come my way but unconnected to any specific cabaret event, or at least of a more general cabaret nature. For example:

Several folks have written in asking what Don Schaffer, of the now defunct Danny's Skylight Room, is up to next. Well, Don has several irons in the fire that, while not firm, should be very exciting. One involves a cabaret series to be held in a new venue in a well known Chelsea restaurant. If successful, the owner will officially open the space to full-time cabaret. Details to be announced when finalized.

More firm news is that Don has teamed with writer/producer John Hoglund as major concert promoters at the legendary LOEW'S PARADISE THEATER (2403 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY - 718-220-6143 - http://www.theparadisetheater.com/ ). This 4,000 seat venue has a long history dating back to 1928 and was New York's first opera house. George Burns, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra once played there and it was once considered one of the top major venues in the United States. It has undergone a gorgeous multi-million dollar restoration and re-opened its doors over a year ago. Many Grammy winning Latin and American artists have played there since the re-opening. Both John and Don have (separately) produced artists and high-profile benefits over the years. This is their first collaboration. Legendary Irish tenor Ronan Tynan, Tony Bennett and Chita Rivera are scheduled to be on the 2007 roster.

And Jerry Scott - who was at the piano 4 or 5 nights a week at DANNY'S? For now you can catch Jerry at RUBY FRUIT (531 Hudson Street, NYC - 212-929-3343 - http://www.rubyfruitnyc.com/ ) on Wednesday nights and also on Sundays during brunch. Call the venue for exact times.

Scott Siegel has announced the names and affiliations of the judges for the 2007 NY Nightlife Awards, which will be held at THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC - 212-997-1929 - http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/ ) on Monday, January 29th at 7:00 pm. The folks voting this year were Kirsten Ames - U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, Michael Anthony - WHPC - 90.3 Fm, Jazz Journalist, Jane Borden - Time Out NY, David Drake - Playbill.Com, Adam Feldman - Time Out NY, David Finkle - The Village Voice, Erin Rose Foley - HBO, Will Friedwald - New York Sun, Steve Futterman - The New Yorker, Ira Gittler - Jazz Improv and Downbeat, David Hajdu - The New Republic, Stu Hamstra - Cabaret Hotline Online, Harry Haun - National Playbill, Celia Ipiotis - Eye On The Arts, David Kenny - WBAI Radio, Peter Leavy - Cabaret Scenes, Rob Lester - Edge.Com, Brian Scott Lipton - Theatermania.Com, Chris Mazzilli - Gotham Comedy Club, Keith Meritz - Cabaret Scenes, David Noh - Gay City News, David Perozzi - ABC-TV, Rex Reed - The New York Observer, Roy Sander - Formerly Back Stage and Citysearch, Barbara Siegel - Talkinbroadway.Com & Theatermania.Com, Scott Siegel - Talkinbroadway.Com & Theatermania.Com, Jonathan Warman - HX Magazine, K.Leander Williams - Time Out NY and Matt Windman - AM NY.

Are the days of cabaret coverage about to end at BACK STAGE magazine? After more than 22 years of consistent coverage, the powers that be at BACK STAGE, the industry's leading trade publication, seem to be cutting back even more on its coverage of cabaret. This is a truly sad situation for the cabaret, comedy and jazz communities at a time when coverage is needed more than ever. Currently, the famed "Bistro Bits" column, which used to appear weekly, only runs once a month in print (there is just a hard-to-find ongoing "blog" on the website filled with reviews that started about a year ago). Word is that the change was strictly a "corporate" decision made when BACK STAGE EAST merged full time with BACK STAGE WEST last year.

This vital column and the features have been pivotal in launching many cabaret/jazz careers and was started by long-time cabaret supporter and editor-in-chief Sherry Eaker's late father, Ira Eaker, who co-founded the magazine. One of cabaret's most ardent and outspoken champions, the late Bob Harrington's Bistro Bits' columns were a "must read" for years. This continued after his passing with excellent writers like John Hoglund, the late Martin Schaeffer, Roy Sander, Scott & Barbara Siegel and David Finkle (David & John are currently the ongoing cabaret reviewers.) Aside from endless astute reviews, columns devoted to helping cabaret artists get started and many "how to" articles as well as important announcements and other cabaret-related items, this column has been a constant in the cabaret community. Hopefully, that will continue and not fall victim to another corporate America blunder. Hopefully too, the Bistro awards will continue as in the past. In recent years, the once public event that attracted hundreds annually, has become an invitation-only private event.

SUPER SIDEBAR ADS NOW AVAILABLE ON THE WEBSITE
The current REGULAR SIDE-BAR ads are seen only on the opening (home) page. Several folks have asked if there was a way that their side-bar ad could be seen on every page of the website, all the time. With over 5000 pages on the site it would be impossible, but I have been revising and recoding all the "index" and all the "most visited pages" as well as all new pages of news, reviews and other items to make it possible for a side-bar ad (in the right column on the pages "above the fold" except for the opening page) to be seen on hundreds of pages - all the time. These SUPER SIDE-BAR ads - twice the size (vertical) of regular side-bar ads are available for $125 per week (membership discounts allowed). There is a 2-week minimum. After 2 weeks continuous, the cost drops to $100 per week. If the banner runs for 9 weeks, the 10th week is free. Only two SUPER SIDEBAR ADS will be available per week. Banner size is 180 x 360 pxls at 72 dpi. Gif, and Jpg banners accepted (no "flash" banners at this time). Banners will appear in the right sidebar at the top two positions - first ordered and paid goes in the top "Tiffany" position. In addition, SUPER SIDEBAR advertisers will have their offering mentioned in both the MONDAY and MIDWEEK issues of CABARET HOTLINE and the both ads will be featured in rotation on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE weblog pages as well. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website for details on all sizes, styles and specs.

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing. Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to be sure that these discounts will be honored.

Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.

By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website).

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

Your membership donations support this publication and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. If you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and would like to support us, why not join as a supporting member? Your donation is most important to me, not just to pay for my food, cable, phone, DSL and rent, etc., but also as a confirmation of your appreciation. Can you please help?

For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, just click on the JOIN HERE button on the website. You can even make your membership donation by credit card, using PayPal. If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your membership donations make this all possible.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
