KABARETT FETE THIS WEEK: NYC'S FIRST EUROPEAN CABARET FESTIVAL
Karen Kohler will present KABARETT FETE (http://www.kabarettfete.com/
) New York City's first cabaret festival devoted to the European cabaret
arts from Tuesday through Saturday, January 23rd through 27th at HELEN'S
RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609
- http://www.helensnyc.com/
) as part of her continuing effort to nurture the European cabaret arts
in the New York cabaret scene. These NY-based artists come from seven
countries including France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Canada,
and the USA, and are dedicated to the authentic interpretation of the
Great European Songbook. Several have been members of Kohler's 4-year
old cabaret ensemble, Kabarett Kollektif, winner of the 2006 New York
Nightlife Award for "Unique Cabaret Performance."
Two programs will make their NY debut in Kabarett Fete:
Swedish-born Olivia Stevens' tribute to the controversial Swedish
star Zarah Leander, a siren of the Third Reich; and Rebecca Fletcher's
exploration of the Yiddish cabaret music of Warsaw. Kohler has also
secured the rights to screen the documentary Dance of Death: Cabaret
in the Camps by Berlin film-maker Volker Kuehn in NY for the first
time. This film, which combines rare footage of cabaret in the concentration
camps with interviews of some of the surviving artists, has been described
as "an especially stirring document of the Holocaust.... more forceful
than any known commentary... a memorial for the more or less unknown
hero of the concentration camps."
The festival programming is as follows:
Tuesday, January 23rd
6:30 pm - Micheline, Brel & Piaf
9:00 pm - Karen Kohler, Three Pennies and A Touch of Venus: The Songs
of Weill & Dietrich
Wednesday, January 24th
6:30 pm - Olivia Stevens, Pleasure & Peril: Zarah Leander and The
Third Reich

HERE & THERE
"You're only as old as you feel" is the old saying. Of course, there
is a coda that says "There is no fool like an old fool." So, I had to
choose over the past few days. With the temperatures hovering in the
20s (f) with a wind chill temperature of less than 10 (f), I decided
to realize that I am as old as I am, not as I feel, and stay indoors
(except for a noon-time run for groceries) for the past few days. Actually,
"indoors" was pretty cold too - I had to stop work often to warm my
fingers - temperatures dropped to 59 degrees (f) in my room. (Today
it is up to 70 inside.)
Today there is a prediction that the 30s (f) will rule
- with a chance of snow flurries - so I still plan to make it tonight
to THE TRIAD and the MAC Post-Holiday party at 6:00 pm. If you want
to catch me there though, you better be on time, since I have had
reservations for some time for a show at DON'T TELL MAMA at 6:30 pm
- but I broke several reservations over the weekend and hate to break
any more for a while (unless those "flurries" turn into something
more).
You have less than a full week to get your tickets for the 2006 NY NIGHTLIFE
AWARDS show at THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC - 212-997-1929
- http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/
) to be presented on Monday night, January 29th at 7:00 pm. Winners
perform rather than make speeches, and performers scheduled to pick
up their awards (and perform) so far are Jessica Molaskey, John Pizzarelli,
Christine Ebersole & Billy Stritch, Lisa Asher, Scott Coulter, Lorinda
Lisitza, Tom Andersen, Scott Coulter, Tim Di Pasqua, Paula West, Freddy
Cole, Cedar Walton and Ben Riley's Monk Legacy Septet. In addition,
Jim Caruso's Broadway at Birdland series and¸THE METROPOLITAN ROOM will
be receiving special recognition awards "For successfully bringing Broadway
stars onto cabaret stages in quality shows at affordable prices." The
Nightlife Legend Award will be presented to Maureen McGovern (who will
also perform. Several additional performers are scheduled to appear,
including Judy Gold, Tom Wopat, Charles Busch, Laurel Masse, Larry Gatlin
and Rupert Holmes. I hope to see all my cabaret friends (and more) at
the show - it looks like the biggest and best NIGHTLIFE AWARD show ever!
Tickets can be ordered 24 hours a day, every day at 212-307-4100 and
at http://TicketMaster.com/
. For more details see http://www.SiegelPresents.com/

Here are some more thoughts about MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets)
- but I am sure can be applied to other cabaret organizations around
the country as well (I am trying to keep from spending too much time
in any single issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on these comments). By
the way, I do not pretend to know all the answers, and have all the
solutions.
First off (and I am as guilty of this as others) we
have to get over the "we vs. them" way of discussing MAC. The MAC
Board of Directors is not MAC - they are nominated and elected by
the members of MAC, and if there are some problems with Board decisions,
all MAC members must bear part of the responsibility - just as with
any elected representative we choose to speak for us in any area of
life. At the same time, the MAC board must be responsive to the membership's
wishes and hopes. Especially on important issues that have major effect
on the membership, the MAC members must be informed and consulted
as much as possible and practical. This was the main complaint of
the membership last year when it was decided to change the MAC AWARD
voting procedures. I was told that the changes were discussed by the
board for over 6 months, and the decision was announced to the membership
without warning and without a chance for input as an unchangeable
decision nearly halfway through the year - in mid-May of 2005. As
a result of the membership reaction in May, several adjustments were
made to the new rules, but the damage was done. I have been promised
that this will never happen again.
Last issue I wrote about the matter of the MAC board
needing to once again work towards getting support from several major
writers who form what is called "the NYC cabaret press." Someone wrote
me that there were certain writers that "hate" MAC (or at least the
MAC Board). I will assume that some writers feel they are hated as
well by MAC (or at least by the MAC Board). Personally, I know that
both the cabaret press folks and current MAC board members I know
are all adults, and all reasonable people. "Hate" is a childish attitude,
and to anyone who does "hate" (be it Board Member or Press Member)
it is time to "grow up." Much of the anger on both sides is based
on actions and statements made or written by Board and/or Press members
a year or more ago. It is time to "forgive and forget." Of course
there are a few apologies that still may need to be made, but we are
all adults here, aren't we? Time to ""make up and move on"!
Someone also wrote, in regards to my suggestion that
MAC member clubs be asked to renew their memberships annually, that
the result would be that the number of member clubs would drop to
less than a dozen. This is a terrible indictment of MAC - the programs,
policies and actions of MAC should be such that clubs would be lining
up to become members. Perhaps a meeting of the owners/managers of
the member clubs is in order here, and that MAC take the time to explain
to the member club representatives how important MAC membership is
to their best interests. I will have more to say on "why MAC?" in
Thursday's issue.
In this connection, perhaps an attractive, colorful
promotional brochure outlining the many benefits of MAC membership
(directed to both performers and club owners/managers) would be a
better investment than the oft-promised member newsletter that always
ends up as a one or two issue periodical. In the past months I have
seen some great promotional brochures - Richard Skipper has a great
one as does Linda Amiel Burn's Singing Experience." I received an
entire multi-page booklet the other day from The Singers' Forum outlining
their programs and benefits. The MAC membership (and even the MAC
board itself) is blessed with many folks who work as writers, graphic
designers and promoters. Their talents can be put to good use on such
a project.
One of the most repeated complaints I hear from disgruntled
MAC members (and former members) is that they have volunteered or
been appointed to MAC committees that never seem to hold meetings!
They want to help and either their offer of assistance is ignored
or never utilized. I have brought this matter to your attention here
in the past, and hopefully it has been corrected. On the other side
of the coin, MAC is a membership organization that needs the talents
and assistance of all membership as volunteers and workers in order
to be effective. Membership presumes participation - and with the
fantastic talents that members have, MAC should be "booming."
Finally, in my private discussions and e-mails with
members of the MAC Board I have discovered that there is a genuine
change of spirit and attitude working its way through the entire organization.
Several new members have joined and several former members have rejoined.
Please drop by THE TRIAD (158 West 72nd Street, NYC - 212-362-2511
- http://www.Triadnyc.com/
) tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and "meet & greet" and pass along those
handshakes and hugs. I apologize that I will only be able to be there
a very short time, but I expect great things begin tonight - don't
miss this opportunity to get MAC back on track, and restore the organization
to the position of importance, influence and respect it once held.
This may be our last chance - let's not waste it!
Please be sure to mark your calendars for July 6, 2007 - it is a Friday
night and it may be difficult for me to find a venue that can have me
on a Friday night, but it is my birthday and the 17th Anniversary of
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. I will be awarding one or more JEFF MATSON Awards
on that night (if you have a suggestion of a person to be considered,
please send it in), and I will also be establishing a new second award
to be announced that night. More details on this in the weeks to come
- including the theme and location of the party & show. We will follow
the schedule we had last year - a party with open-mic from 6:00 to 7:30
pm, followed by a show from 8:00 to 9:30 pm - and then followed by "cake"
and networking.
THIS & THAT
I've added this new section to mention news items that come my way but
unconnected to any specific cabaret event, or at lease of a more general
cabaret nature. For example:
Last issue we mentioned that Jerry Scott, formerly a 5-night-a-week
piano bar host at the now closed DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM, could still
be seen on at Sunday Brunch and Wednesday nights at RUBY FRUIT (531
Hudson Street, NYC - 212-929-3343 - http://www.rubyfruitnyc.com/
). Well, now comes word that starting on Thursday February 8th, Jerry
will be performing from 8:00 pm until Midnight at NINO'S TUSCANY (117
West 58th Street, NYC - 212-757-8630 - http://www.ninostuscany.com/
) on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. By the way, Jerry has a huge
following so reservations are highly recommended. I am sure (knowing
Jerry's passion for throwing parties) the place will be packed with
well wishers on the 8th!
I hope everyone in the NYC area (and elsewhere) saw and read the article
on Scott Siegel in the NY TIMES on Friday - written by Stephen Holden.
The title of the item was "A Producer for All Seasons (Also Juggles)"
and it is still on the NY TIMES website at http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/19/arts/music/19sieg.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
- you may have to register to read the item, but the registration is
free and your information is kept confidential, so check it out.
Marcus Simeone reserved the MESSAGE BOARD banner ad space for 10 weeks
last fall to announce his debut CDs release, but as I always advise,
for your first CD, your best investment is making sure it is done right.
Well, it was worth the wait - the eagerly-awaited brand new Marcus Simeone
CD with Barry Levitt and some of the industry's finest musicians, has
been picked up by and is now being released on the prestigious PS CLASSICS
(http://www.psclassics.com/
) label in April. It is a red hot fusion of jazz, R & B/Pop - and cabaret
- by one of today's most acclaimed and versatile fusion vocalists. And
on a separate note, after casually singing just a few impromptu songs
at a Christmas party there, Marcus was invited by the owner of LORENZO'S
RESTAURANT, BAR & CABARET (1100 South Avenue, Staten Island, NY - 718-477-2400)
to play the main room on April 28th - details not announced yet so stay
tuned. Marcus is a resident of Staten Island and has a big following
there and in New Jersey where he has played many rooms. His Mathis show
at LE DOME at THE MANOR (111 Prospect Avenue, West Orange, NJ - 973-731-2360
- http://themanorrestaurant.com/cabaret.html
) was sold out with a long waiting list.
Lots of news follows - I hope you take the time to at least glance at
all the items and click on the links provided for further information
on the website. And already I have more news items that arrived in the
past few hours to post on the website and include in the next (MIDWEEK)
issue.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
