HERE & THERE
After a brief but welcome respite from the frigid cold weather for several
days, I sadly report that the cold is back - I had actually put my down-filled
coat in the back of the closet as sort of sign of the end of winter.
After all, that groundhog predicted an early spring. But temperatures
are supposed to "plummet" (as they say) to 15 degrees (f) tonight, and
climb to only the mid-20s over the next few days. Brrrrr.
Good thing I had my latest cabaret endurance test on
Saturday - starting at 5:00 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM for the "Rendezvous
- an Evening with Edith, Jacques, Charles and Friends" show, and then
scooting uptown (fortunately the "R" train is 1/2 block from THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM) to DON'T TELL MAMA for Matt Malone's debut show "Follow Your
Heart" show at 6:30 pm (MAMA'S is 1 1/2 blocks from the "R"), than
back downtown to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM for Tracy Stark's "Feast for
the Heart" CD release show (featuring cabaret icon Michael Vaccaro)
and then back uptown on the beloved "R" where, after a brief dinner
break at the newly redecorated and reopened GALAXY DINER, I ended
up at The G&L Comedy Fest at 11:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (hosted by
the cleverly funny Michael Brill) - which didn't end until nearly
12:45 am. Temperatures were a "balmy" 40-45 degrees the whole evening.
Advice to all: the only and best way to get around in this town is
the NYC Subway system! Safe, mostly clean, and certainly efficient.
I haven't had that much fun and excitement all winter!
I will soon have another fun night spot to hang out at - UNCLE CHARLIES
(139 East 45th Street, NYC) - a brand new piano bar opening soon (that's
why no phone number or website yet). David Pellegrene will be at the
piano Thursdays through Saturdays from 9:00 pm to 2:00 am. The venue
is between Third & Lexington Avenues - almost right next door to Grand
Central Station. I am listening to David's CD right now as I write this
issue, and you must check it out - amazing vocals. The CD ("At Your
Request") includes many of the most-requested songs from his many years
performing in pianO bars. I can't wait to catch him "live."
A reminder: With the preliminary MAC award ballots in the hands of the
voters and due back by March 14th (postmarked by March 10th), a number
of performers hoping to make it past the first ballot are preparing
repeats of their 2006 shows for early March as a means of showing the
voters their stuff. Problem is getting the word out on short notice.
Need I remind you of the advantages of running an ad on CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE?
Unlike those expensive to print, expensive to mail,
post cards or fliers, a banner on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is seen every
day, again and again - not just seen once and tossed in the recycle
bin. And it is seen by cabaret lovers (and MAC voters) all over the
world (even by folks who might not be able to make your show) again
and again, every day. You can run a banner for 3 weeks on the website
for less than
Just click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top
of every page on the website to see sample banners, prices, sizes
and styles. There are ad styles available and affordable to every
taste and price range. And as an added bonus, your cabaret or CD offering
gets a mention in every MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which
is e-mailed to over 2,700 cabaret lovers around the world.
It appears that CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE may be moving to a new apartment
in the next few weeks - and possibly no where near the "R" train - we
shall wait and see. If the move goes through, we will be needing some
funds to cover such things as rent deposit and some new furniture (my
computer desk - which cost $99 five years and and which I put together
myself - will definitely not survive another move). Other items I may
need will depend on where I will be moving to. Anyone with a small van,
please contact me - the last time I moved we discovered that several
items never made it off the truck - I was on crutches at the time and
things were a bit confusing on moving day. I may just hold a CABARET
HOTLINE SPECIAL EVENT as a "moving tribute to the newsletter" or something
like that. Stay tuned.
Short issue today - but jam-packed with news and only a few views. Please
let me have your input on what you would like to see CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE be in the future. This has become a time of reflection - a time
of change (see above item) and perhaps just a hint of self-doubt (see
bottom item). Most of all, please send your membership and other donations
to support this venture. Better still - run a banner!
AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER: Each MONDAY issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter
includes listings for all the banner advertisers on the website as long
as the banner is running. In most cases there are more detailed articles
on these items in the CABARET NEWS section of the website.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.svhamstra.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at
least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show,
CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do
not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases
I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter,
so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
If you don't have a press release, just click here:
http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for
the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release,
one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns,
embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply
a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things
that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere.
I never open them!
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep
in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows
and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important,
and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website
means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
Please drop me a line regarding your thoughts about the revised format
for the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. By eliminating the listings
section (just including links to the listings on the website) I am able
to include more news items and still send out a shorted issue. But you
might prefer the former style. I won't know unless you let me know.
Just a few short comments on MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets)
in this issue (way down here at the bottom where only the really dedicated
"HOTLINERS" look) - I sort of got carried away last week and I think
my subscribers need a break from this discussion for a few days anyway.
There have been only a few e-mails received on my "editorials" but there
has been a significant fall-off in the number of membership donations
the last few weeks. Hopefully it is because folks are using their "discretionary"
funds to purchase MAC memberships. As I wrote someone last week, if
the recovery of MAC means the demise of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, so be
it. I certainly think a viable, hard working NYC cabaret organization
like MAC is trying to be under its new leadership, is far more important
than this little one-man operation out in Queens. In fact, if the HOTLINE
folds, I will have time to run for a spot on the MAC board!
And that is just about the way it was.
