IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
WINTER WEATHER MIGHT MEAN
DELAYS AND CANCELLATIONS
Winter weather means cold,
snow, sleet and other uncomfortable conditions - and also means occasional
cabaret event cancellations. If planning to attend a live entertainment
event be sure to phone the venue ahead of time - and give yourself extra
time to reach the venue. If your event is cancelled, please let CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE know (subscribers to the NYC CABARET BULLETIN SERVICE
will be notified if I am notified in time) - and also post the cancellation
on the MESSAGE BOARD (just click on the button marked MESSAGE BOARD
at the top of every page on the website) before 4:00 pm.
It is another FREE service to promote the art and artists
of cabaret. You need not be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (but
it would be nice).
NYC AREA CABARET FANS CAN
GET PICKS OF THE WEEK - FOR FREE!
Ae will be sending out a
special addendum to this issue later today to subscribers of our NYC
CABARET PICKS SERVICE, so if you have not signed up for it, today would
be a good time to sign on. Just click on the button found at the top
of every page on the website marked NYC AREA NEWS and then click on
the blue button on that page marked NYC PICKS and fill out the simple
form. This program is in testing right now. We will need this list to
reach 100 in order for this service to continue.
There is also
a button marked NYC BULLETINS - a service where you can receive bulletins
about show cancellations in NYC, urgent news and special last minute
discount deals in the NYC area. This list already has over 350 subscribers.
Both are FREE
services to promote the art and artists of cabaret. You need not be
a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (but it would be nice).
HERE & THERE
Here's a little warning -
and quite possibly not even necessary. I need to find a new apartment,
and anyone who lives in the NYC area knows that it is perhaps the most
stress-filled project one can take on (except perhaps planning a wedding).
I spent much of yesterday afternoon on the hunt and I am certain that
many more days will be spent in my quest, and on the eventual move.
I have until April 30th at my present location, but when the right space
is found I hope to make the move quickly.
Meantime,
I am looking for someone with a small van (I do not have much in furniture,
since the space I am now living in is completely furnished and I sold
or gave away most of the large items when I moved here) (I also no
longer have a driver's license so I can't rent one myself). When the
day comes for the move, I am sure some good strong helpers would be
appreciated as well (I am on the 3rd floor here). I shall certainly
keep everyone informed. The old saying is "you can tell who your good
friends are if they help you move - and who your best friends are
if they help you move the body."
Of course
this event will also mean that your membership donations would be
most appreciated about now, if you have not already joined as a member.
I estimate I will need a minimum of $500 to make the move (that is
what the moving costs came to last time) plus the cost of any additional
furniture (or other items) I may need at the new location. If you
have not joined as a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, now would be
a great time (and any size donation would be deeply appreciated).
My only income besides Social Security and a few odd jobs I take on
here and there, is your membership and advertising donations. Just
click on the JOIN HERE button at the top of every page on my website
for information (and even a way to donate via credit card).
Please note
that it might be possible that for a few days in the near future we
will be "off the air" as it were, while I make the move and possibly
have to wait for a Phone/DSL line to be installed, etc. Actually now
would be a great time to have an iBook laptop handy to take to a locak
Starbucks to avoid interruption of the newsletter and website updates!
In the midst of my Sunday
apartment hunt yesterday, I found myself on the east side of Manhattan
on my way to a 3:30 pm appointment in the Village to look at a possible
share. It was barely 2:00 pm so on my bus ride downtown I decided to
stop for brunch - at LA BELLA'S (581 Second Avenue, NYC - 212-683-3889)
where Trudy Mann's fabulous Sunday Open Mic event takes place every
week from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. This is my first time at one of Trudy's LA
BELLA events - when I lived in the theater district a few years back,
Trudy was holding the shows at a restaurant (no longer there) on Ninth
Avenue, just a half block away from my apartment, so I was able to attend
often. Nice thing about Trudy's open mic shows is that everyone gets
a chance to sing - pro, former pro, wanna-be pro and just plain "love
to sing" performer. And the enthusiasm is so strong you can't resist
getting hooked. Lucky for me there was a break at 3:00 pm giving me
a chance to make my 3:30 meeting. Much fun. Catch it if you can - and
the food is all reasonably priced too, from pizza to a complete Italian
dinner. I had a Chicken Caesar wrap - under $10 and huge and delicious.
Well, I am sort of back in
the CD-listening mode. I received a "designated" donation Saturday towards
the purchase of a new iPod Shuffle, from a recent member of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE. So Sunday evening I walked down the hill to the BEST
BUY store a few blocks away and bought the silver colored model. The
tiny little player is about 1 1/2 inches square and is now sitting in
its little dock recharging - atop my equally tiny MAC mini computer
- 6 inches square. I already stored the last 10 CDs I received on the
1 gig drive and will be able once more listen to cabaret music as I
rush about to and from cabaret events (and while apartment hunting).
My pal Daniel was so jealous he went out and bought a pink colored one!
After serving on the special
eligibility committee for the CABARET section of the MAC (Manhattan
Association of Cabarets) preliminary ballot, I was invited and agreed
to become a member of the selection committee for the COMEDY section
of the final ballot. I see a lot of comedy shows in the cabaret rooms
and was asked to join to add my comments and recommendations. My main
recommendation of course would be that this and the similar JAZZ selection
committee be discontinued after this year and that the choices for these
areas be decided on the preliminary ballot by all the membership in
the same way as the cabaret nominees. We are halfway there - last year
the membership could not even vote in these categories on the final
ballot. Wish me luck - we meet tonight.
By the way, don't forget
to get your order in for the MAC AWARDS show on May 1st at BB KING'S
BLUES CLUB (237 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-997-4144 - http://www.bbkingsblues.com/
). Remember, there are only 600 seats in the venue - with a large number
already set aside for members of the press and nominees. It is cabaret
style table seating - food and drinks available. And to prove it is
cabaret style, there is a 2-beverage minimum! See the MAC website (http://www.macnyc.com/
) for details. This is our event - planned, produced and performed by
members of the cabaret community (which in my book includes jazz and
comedy). It is the only cabaret award event in town where the cabaret
community at large chooses the winners. Phil Geoffrey Bond is directing
the show, which means it should be a truly memorable evening. And MAC
has lowered the ticket prices - tickets cost from $45 to $125.
Those who are trying to destroy
cabaret in this town are probably taking special glee in the fact that
this year's MABEL MERCER CABARET CONVENTION will be cut back to only
four nights of shows. And the event will reportedly be moved to November.
Those coming into Manhattan
on Saturday the 17th of March had best be aware of what every New Yorker
already knows, St Patrick's Day is not the day to bring your car with
you. Public transportation is a must! The annual parade starts at 11:00
am and moves UP Fifth Avenue, and lasts for several hours, cutting the
town right up the middle - going from east to west will be a long and
tedious operation. Plus the event is on a Saturday this year - meaning
every Irish person of every age (and wanna-be-Irish-for-a-day person)
within 100 miles of NYC will want to take part in the parade and the
usual post-parade celebration in every pub in town!
A reminder: With the preliminary
MAC award ballots in the hands of the voters and due back by Wednesday,
March 14th (postmarked by March 10th), a number of performers hoping
to make it past the first ballot are preparing repeats of their 2006
shows for early March as a means of showing the voters their stuff.
Problem is getting the word out on short notice. Need I remind you of
the advantages of running an ad on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE?
Unlike those
expensive to print, expensive to mail, post cards or fliers, a banner
on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is seen every day, again and again - not
just seen once and tossed in the recycle bin. And it is seen by cabaret
lovers (and MAC voters) all over the world (even by folks who might
not be able to make your show) again and again, every day. You can
run a banner for 3 weeks on the website for less than
Just click
on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website
to see sample banners, prices, sizes and styles. There are ad styles
available and affordable to every taste and price range. And as an
added bonus, your cabaret or CD offering gets a mention in every MONDAY
issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which is e-mailed to over 2,700
cabaret lovers around the world.
10 REASONS WHY NYC CABARET
FANS SHOULD JOIN MAC NOW
Last issue I wrote the TOP
10 SILLY REASONS FOR NOT JOINING MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets),
and someone wrote in asking for the top 10 reasons why someone should
join MAC. So here - slightly edited and expanded - is what I wrote back.
1. Join MAC to become a part of the cabaret community
in very real tangible terms. 2. Join MAC to show your support of the
MAC board at a time when they are attempting to finally build an organization
that truly is dedicated to the cabaret community rather than the personal
self interests of a few board members as in the past. 3. Join MAC
to and take part in the MAC award voting process - the more members,
the more voters, and the more meaningful the award to those who win.
At one time MAC had 1200 members. If it went back to that number,
and instilled with more enthusiasm, and more voted, the award would
indeed be far more meaningful. 4. Join MAC to show those who attempt
continue to divide the community that you do not support their self-serving
actions (they have actually themselves turned into the very type of
person that ran MAC in the past!) They do not care about cabaret -
they only care about their own power and imagined prestige. 5. Join
MAC to show that the NYC cabaret community is not a bunch of self-centered
individuals but a really unified force dedicated to preserving the
art of cabaret. 6. Join MAC to make a statement by joining that you
support cabaret and want it to flourish - the club owners, the press,
the record labels and others who can make real investments in cabaret
are watching - prove to them that cabaret performers and fans are
not a bunch of crabby, spoiled children. 7. Join MAC to take part
in the committees and other groups taking part in the work of MAC
and help to promote cabaret in NYC. MAC needs members with talent,
vision and dedication. 8.Join MAC as an indication that you take pride
in being part of a cause and purpose of MAC: the promotion of cabaret,
one of the most exciting of live entertainment forms. 9. OK, discounts
are available for many cabaret shows to members of MAC (certainly
not a true REASON to join but indeed a benefit). 10. Join MAC because
its the right thing to do - especially now when MAC is undergoing
change and rebirth.

or password required, the board has been the subject of a lot of spam
postings - up to 50 or more a day - so it is currently being moderated
24 hours a day, so it may take a while for your post to appear, especially
if you post your message between 4:00 pm and 1:00 am when I am usually

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE
NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows
around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET
NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at
least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show,
CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do
not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases
I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter,
so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
If you don't
have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Just send
in your press release or listings request in simple txt format (the
format I write these issues in and use for the website). And, please,
please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails
with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos,
distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post
card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us
to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open
them!
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter
I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find
published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep
in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows
and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important,
and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website
means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
Please drop me a line regarding
your thoughts about the revised format for the MONDAY issue of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE. By eliminating the listings section (just including
links to the listings on the website) I am able to include more news
items and still send out a shorted issue. But you might prefer the former
style. I won't know unless you let me know.
With the MAC preliminary
ballots due back this weekend, it is time for me to announce the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE best of 2006 cabaret picks. Look for a special announcement
in the MIDWEEK issue, due to be sent on Thursday.
And that is just about the
way it was.
