IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
WINTER WEATHER MIGHT MEAN DELAYS AND CANCELLATIONS
Winter weather means cold, snow, sleet and other uncomfortable conditions
- and also means occasional cabaret event cancellations. If planning
to attend a live entertainment event be sure to phone the venue ahead
of time - and give yourself extra time to reach the venue. If your event
is cancelled, please let CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE know (subscribers to
the NYC CABARET BULLETIN SERVICE will be notified if I am notified in
time) - and also post the cancellation on the MESSAGE BOARD (just click
on the button marked MESSAGE BOARD at the top of every page on the website)
before 4:00 pm.
It is another FREE service to promote the art and artists
of cabaret. You need not be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (but
it would be nice).
HERE & THERE
I was sort of "trapped" in my apartment for three days - the snow that
was promised for Friday turned out to be more sleet and ice than snow
and the predicted 7 inches of snow ended up to be about 3 inches of
very solid frozen slush - impossible to shovel, impossible to walk through.
And for some reason the borough of Queens seems to get short-shrift
in the snow-plowing setup in NYC - I was watching the St. Patrick's
Day parade on TV on Saturday and it appeared that Fifth Avenue was completely
cleared of snow, street and sidewalks. They must have taken the plows
assigned to my neighborhood to Manhattan! My street had a single lane
cleared down the center that actually was a sheet of solid, compacted
ice.
By Sunday afternoon the sidewalks were passible and
I finally had a chance last night to get out of the house for some
much needed groceries. I then went to meet my friend Daniel in neighboring
Jackson Heights (there is a bus right on the corner to take me there
and back) for a quick Sunday late night supper and a drink or two.
Ended up enjoying my freedom so much I got back home well past 1:00
am. I got up at 6:00 am to complete the newsletter.
Now it is nearly noon and I am getting really sleepy
- I have my own gauge to test how tired I am based on the number of
yawns in a 15 minute period. I'm up to 5. So, rather than include
a number of things I was going to write about today, I am holding
my notes and will use the items in the MIDWEEK issue - normally sent
on Thursdays.
We never reached out goal of 100 subscribers to the NYC CABARET PICKS
bulletins - our attempt to provide show recommendations and suggestions
for cabaret events in the NYC area. We did not even reach 40 subscribers,
and if there is that little interest (we have over 350 subscribers to
our NYC CABARET BULLETIN service). The special services are provided
so as not to fill our regular issues with news only of interest to folks
in the NYC area. So the NYC PICKS service, while not fully cancelled,
has been discontinued.
Our condolences to Lennie Watts (who currently is booking manager at
THE METROPOLITAN ROOM) and family. Willard W. "Bob" Watts, Lennie's
father and beloved husband of Audrey Watts, passed away on Wednesday,
March 14th in St. Louis MO after a long illness. Funeral Services were
Saturday, March 17th. Mr. Watts was a Marine POW from WW II. Lennie
had gone to St. Louis and was in St. Louis with his family at the time
of his father's passing.
Did you check out the new photo on the "PHOTO OF THE WEEK" page (which
some folks are calling "PHOTO OF THE YEAR" because it has been up there
so long - my camera broke)? Someone sent me a vintage photo and you
are invited to guess the identity of the three people in the photo.
No prize - but send in your guesses. All three are famous - sort of.
No one has sent in the correct answer - yet.
Lots going on in my personal life means a little less time for CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE for the next few weeks. With a change in my housing situation
coming up, there may be a few days when we will be "off the air." At
least that's what the phone company tells me, since apparently they
cannot install a new DSL line at the new apartment (wherever that might
be) until I actually make the move. They cannot even promise that I
can keep my same phone number. So, if you suddenly find your e-mails
unanswered and miss an issue of the newsletter, please don't assume
that I have fallen off the edge of the world - just wait a few days.
Now for a lot of news about cabaret - some real news gems in this issue
so don't skim over this issue too quickly.
AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER: Each MONDAY issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter
includes listings for all the banner advertisers on the website as long
as the banner is running. In most cases there are more detailed articles

glittery, light. Ms. Akers will be accompanied on piano by Mr. Rebic

a project that remains very dear to his heart. As with most small films,
they can really use your support. It was released in 35 markets last

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of
the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show,
CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do
not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases
I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter,
so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
If you don't have a press release, just click here:
http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for
the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release,
one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns,
embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply
a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things
that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere.
I never open them!
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep
in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows
and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important,
and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website
and on the blog means two additional places where the show information
can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your
banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.
It gets sillier and sillier. Folks who a few years back campaigned for
the election to the MAC Board be voted on by all members of MAC (Manhattan
Association of Cabarets), now that they succeeded, seem to want the
vote of the membership to be overturned because the persons elected
do not meet their approval! Apparently the vote of the membership can
only be trusted if the results match their own choices. Instead of joining
MAC, taking part in the voting process and possibly running for office,
these folks stand on the sidelines, sling mud, call for resignations,
carry on name-calling and bring up long-stale complaints about board
members who were duly chosen and elected by the MAC membership! Time
to move on! People who continue to attempt to divide the NYC cabaret
community are doing grave harm to the art and artists of cabaret in
this town. Fortunately their number is few.
I have a lot of things to do - places to go - projects to complete -
and some more packing of clothes, CDs, books, etc. I have a very good
lead on a new apartment - the very good lead on an affordable apartment
that I had last week turned out to be a basement apartment with a low
ceiling (I am still 6 feet tall) and two very small windows (which I
had to stand to see through). I have about 6 weeks to find a place and
make the move but I don't want to wait until the last minute. So, until
next time...
And that is just about the way it was.
Hugs & Stuff,
STU
