HERE & THERE
Another short issue today - but another one packed with news and information.
The hunt for a new living space continues with one very good prospect
found - in Manhattan! I will definitely keep you informed. This space
is near two bus lines that lead to two major subway hubs, which means
I will not have to make that trek back to Queens every night after seeing
cabaret events. This will be another share situation - can't afford
much else in any borough at this time - but I will have my own space
away with lots of windows and cable & DSL included. I will have to get
my own phone hookup, but with the DSL already running in the apartment
it may be - if the deal goes through - that there will be little down-time
as far as the newsletter is concerned.
To NYC area cabaret lovers: we have two chances in the next several
weeks to show the nay-sayers that the NYC cabaret community stands united
against those who want to continue dividing us. I am talking about the
BACK STAGE BISTRO AWARDS GALA coming up on April 9th and the MAC AWARDS
GALA coming up on May 1st. I hope everyone who agrees with me that the
time has come to join hands as a cabaret community will get behind these
events. Aren't you sick and tired of the same-old, same-old attempts
to stir up trouble? You may have noticed how so many in the MAC organization
(including several MAC Board members) have been promoting the BISTRO
AWARD event. It proved that when it comes to promoting cabaret, we all
stand together as one. This must really infuriate those who want the
troubles of the past to continue!
It is really important that all NYC area (and those
beyond) cabaret lovers purchase tickets to the BISTRO AWARD event
at GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB (208 West 23rd Street, NYC - 212-367-9000 -
http://www.gothamcomedyclub.com/
), since this is the first time in several years that the event is
open to the public. If this year's gala is a sellout, it should prove
to the "powers that be" that coverage of cabaret by BACK STAGE magazine
is important and that the BISTRO awards and annual gala should continue.
To purchase tickets, call (646) 654-5725 or email bistros@backstage.com
- do it today!
And the same goes for the MAC AWARDS event - the newly
energized MAC Board has taken a new look at what the awards show should
be, moving the event to a smaller, cabaret-style venue, BB KING'S
BLUES CLUB (237 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-997-4144 - http://www.bbkingsblues.com/
), lowering the ticket prices drastically and choosing a mid-town
location that is convenient to all. There are OVER 10 major subway
lines (A,C,E,S,R,V,Q,1,2,3,7) that have stations virtually in the
basement of the venue! And we hear that this year's show director
Phil Bond has been developing a program that will really give a sparkle
to the night, as MAC begins its third decade of presenting these awards.
To purchase tickets see http://www.macnyc.com/
- and if you haven't joined yet, download a copy of the membership
application form while you are there.
Let's make both events sell-outs and show everyone that
cabaret is not broken in NYC and cabaret fans refuse to be divided!
Maybe those that are attempting to divide and thus destroy cabaret
in NYC will finally realize that what they are attempting does grave
harm to the art and artists of cabaret in NYC. If they truly love
cabaret and want it to strengthen and grow they would not be continuing
their lost cause.
Meantime, MARCH IS CABARET MONTH events are winding down elsewhere in
the country. The Boston Area has some events coming at the end of March,
and the Chicago cabaret lovers just completed a Sunday night songwriter
salute series yesterday.
Once again, for those folks who signed up for the NYC PICKS e-mails,
which had been sent out twice a week, the service has been discontinued
due to lack of interest. Only about 35 folks signed on (we decided that
100 names were necessary to make it worthwhile). Currently there are
over 350 subscribers to the NYC Bulletin Service (announcing show cancellations,
special news and other items of interest mainly to NYC area readers),
and this service - which is strictly only for special notices - is continuing.
The bi-weekly picks took about an hour to prepare each time and with
so few people interested I decided to use that time for other work.
With the final MAC AWARD nominees announced, a number of performers
are preparing repeat performances of their 2006 shows as a means of
showing the voters their stuff. But because the ballots just went into
the mail on Saturday, getting the word out about your show on short
notice becomes a problem. Need I remind you of the advantages of running
an ad on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE? Unlike an expensive to print, expensive
to mail, post card or flier, a banner on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is seen
every day, again and again - not just once and tossed in the recycle
bin. And it is seen by cabaret lovers (and MAC voters) all over the
world (even by folks who might not be able to make your show) again
and again, every day.
Just click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top
of every page on the website to see sample banners, prices, sizes
and styles. There are ad styles available and affordable to every
taste and price range. And as an added bonus, your cabaret or CD offering
gets a mention in every MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which
is e-mailed to over 2,700 cabaret lovers around the world. By the
way, the lowest cost ads (side bars) are limited to 5 per week. In
most instances, we can have your banner or ad up and running within
24 hours!
Did you check out the new photo on the "PHOTO OF THE WEEK" page (which
some folks are calling "PHOTO OF THE YEAR" because it has been up there
so long - my camera broke)? Someone sent me a vintage photo and you
are invited to guess the identity of the three people in the photo.
No prize - but send in your guesses. All three are famous - sort of.
Only three people have sent in a guess so far (no one has been able
to name all three).
I had planned to write a lot more in this issue, and hopefully after
all the business of apartment hunting and moving we will get back into
a more routine work schedule. I plan to visit the possible apartment
location his afternoon, and if all goes well and I can scrape together
the deposit, etc. I can start getting set to make my move.
AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER: Each MONDAY issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter
includes listings for all the banner advertisers on the website as long
as the banner is running. In most cases there are more detailed articles
on these items in the CABARET NEWS section of the website.

and professional successes on and Off Broadway, Cryer and Ford mine
the hits (and a few of the side-splitting misses!) that have made them

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.svhamstra.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at
least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show,
CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do
not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases
I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter,
so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
If you don't have a press release, just click here:
http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for
the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release,
one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns,
embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply
a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things
that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere.
I never open them!
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep
in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows
and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important,
and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website
and on the blog means two additional places where the show information
can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your
banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.
And that is just about the way it was.
