IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
Just when CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE was getting back on track financially after a steep drop in banner
ad and membership income in December and January, along comes a note
on March 1st from the landlord that he wants to move part of his family
back into this apartment on May 1st - meaning CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
needs new digs quickly. This will result in some unanticipated costs
that cannot be avoided.
If you have postponed joining as a member, or if would
like to make a special contribution to help us out, your gifts/memberships
would be especially appreciated this week. For a quick and easy way
to show your support just click on the JOIN HERE button at the top
of every page on the website. If you are already a member, there is
a MAKE A DONATION button also on the front page, in the NEWS section.
HERE & THERE
As you know, I believe in
miracles, and also believe that nothing happens by accident. A few weeks
ago I ran into an old (meaning long-time) cabaret friend and we were
playing "catch-up" regarding the various events in our lives since we
last talked. I mentioned that I was not happy with my living situation
in Queens and he mentioned that he had a spare bedroom at his apartment
in Manhattan. It sounded tempting, but finances being what they were
at the time I declined. Then a week later, unexpectedly, I got a notice
from the landlord that we (I have 4 roommates) had to vacate this apartment
by April 30th. The owner of the building is moving part of his family
back into this apartment (he lived here with his family originally),
and by NYC housing rules this is his right.
Right around
the same time (and I know it is not a coincidence) I received several
orders for banners on the website and with it a nice increase in available
funds. Needless to say (but I of course will say it anyway), I contacted
my old fried immediately to set up a time to see the space and discuss
terms, etc. Just as a safety net, my pal Daniel here in Queens began
to hunt on my behalf in this area as well, and I checked out several
of his recommendations. While my apartment situation for the past
two years has not been the best, it has been fun living in this part
of Queens just the same. These past few years have been quite exciting
ones - meeting so many of new friends and mixing with the folks of
so many cultures and countries living in this area. Within walking
distance I can find Indian, Columbian, Ecuadorian, Chinese, Pakistani,
Greek, Middle Eastern and even Peruvian restaurants. A lad from Bangladesh
sells me donuts, a gal from Viet Nam sees to my dry cleaning, the
guy at the deli is trying to teach me Spanish and the shop on the
corner that specializes in nails is staffed by Koreans. And Mexican
delivery boys are everywhere with pizza racks on their bikes. There
is even a Tibetan temple a few blocks over! It has truly been an experience.
But after
weighing all my options I decided to follow that inner voice and return
to Manhattan. Exact date of the move is to be determined - I have
until April 30th to get all my possessions out of this space. But
the new space is available starting Sunday. I am still short of about
$500 needed to make the move, but I have already packed all my books,
CDs and even some clothes in anticipation.
This issue
is going out a bit early today because I will be heading into Manhattan
right after it goes out to work out the details of "movin' on up!"
Well, it isn't really a "penthouse in the sky" but it looks like if
I can raise the necessary funds by Sunday, I will make the move on
Monday after that day's issue goes out.
The logistics
of the move have yet to be determined. Daniel has promised to help,
and is trying to recruit a friend he has with a car to help ferry
my possessions across the river. It is mostly clothing, books, CDs,
a TV, a coffee maker and computer equipment - only one small cabinet
and 2 chairs will be making the trip. The space I will move into is
fairly furnished but I am ordering a new computer desk and office
chair from STAPLES and that should be all I need.
I am going
ahead in faith with arranging for the new space. I am counting on
your support - my friends and my family - as I take this next adventure
in the ongoing saga of the life and the history of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE - and I know in my heart that the funds will be there as needed.
The sparrow still has His eye.
Once again, for those folks
who signed up for the NYC PICKS e-mails, which had been sent out twice
a week, the service has been discontinued due to lack of interest. Only
about 35 folks signed on (we decided that 100 names were necessary to
make it worthwhile). Currently there are over 350 subscribers to the
NYC Bulletin Service (announcing show cancellations, special news and
other items of interest mainly to NYC area readers), and this service
- which is strictly only for special notices - is continuing. The bi-weekly
picks took about an hour to prepare each time and with so few people
interested I decided to use that time for other work.
There are a few events coming
up in the NYC area that are really important for cabaret fans.
On April 9th
Back Stage Magazine will hold their annual Bistro Awards Gala at GOTHAM
COMEDY CLUB (208 West 23rd Street, NYC - 212-367-9000 - http://www.gothamcomedyclub.com/
). At the gala Back Stage will fete Tony Award winner Betty Buckley
and 38 winners of its annual Bistro Awards, which celebrate and honor
outstanding excellence in cabaret and distinguished work during 2006.
Award winners are invited to perform at this event so it should really
be a star-studded, exciting evening. Tickets cost $35 plus there is
a two beverage minimum. Premium tickets cost $60, plus the two drink
minimum, and include a champagne reception and preferred seating in
the showroom. To purchase, call (646) 654-5725 or email bistros@backstage.com.
At one time the gala was the number-one entertainment event in town
but the past few years budget constraints made the event an "invitation
only" affair. This year the public is invited, and all cabaret fans
are urged to show their support for BACK STAGE Editor-at-Large Sherry
Eaker who is producing the show. If it is a sell out it may once more
become "the hottest ticket in town" every spring. Plus it will show
the "powers that be" at the magazine the importance of cabaret to
the folks in NYC. Please call in your ticket order today! SEE FULL
STORY ON THE WEBSITE at http://www.svhamstra.com/NewsNYC070409Bistro.shtml
Also, the
21st ANNUAL MAC AWARDS will be presented at a gala show on Tuesday,
May 1st at BB KING'S BLUES CLUB (237 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-997-4144
- http://www.bbkingsblues.com/
). I don't know exactly what is being planned, but with Phil Bond
directing the show it should be a winner! And unlike the past few
years, this room has cabaret-style seating with food and beverage
service (2-drink minimum). Seating is limited to 600 - with many seats
already set aside for nominees and press, so be sure to order yours
as soon as possible. Tickets cost from $45 to $125. I urge you to
attend to show this town that the cabaret community is united and
not broken, as some (fortunately only a few) would have you believe.
I hope to have more details on this event in the next few issues.
See the MAC website (http://www.macnyc.com/
) for more information on how to order your tickets.
While on this subject, I
want to urge anyone who lives in an area served by a cabaret organization
to join up. Here are some websites that have information: BACA (Boston
Association of Cabaret Artists - http://www.bostoncabaret.com/
); CABARET WEST (http://www.cabaretwest.org/
); CCP (Chicago Cabaret Professionals - http://www.chicagocabaret.org/
); DCCN (DC Cabaret Network - http://www.dccabaretnetwork.org/
); MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets - http://www.macnyc.com/
). These organizations provide their memberships with mailing lists
to publicize their shows, networking opportunities, workshops and seminars,
performance events and other services. And don't just join - volunteer!
I know nearly all the leaders of these organizations, and I also know
they are all overworked - the more members who volunteer their time
the better the organization can serve all their members.
With the final MAC AWARD
nominees announced, a number of performers are preparing repeat performances
of their 2006 shows as a means of showing the voters their stuff. But
because the ballots just went into the mail on Saturday, getting the
word out about your show on short notice becomes a problem. Need I remind
you of the advantages of running an ad on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE? Unlike
an expensive to print, expensive to mail, post card or flier, a banner
on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is seen every day, again and again - not just
once and tossed in the recycle bin. And it is seen by cabaret lovers
(and MAC voters) all over the world (even by folks who might not be
able to make your show) again and again, every day.
Just click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top
of every page on the website to see sample banners, prices, sizes
and styles. There are ad styles available and affordable to every
taste and price range. And as an added bonus, your cabaret or CD offering
gets a mention in every MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which
is e-mailed to over 2,700 cabaret lovers around the world. By the
way, the lowest cost ads (side bars) are limited to 5 per week. In
most instances, we can have your banner or ad up and running within
24 hours!
I had the bad experience
these past few weeks attending shows that were exciting, entertaining
and fun but the fact that there were so few in the audience put a damper
on the proceedings. One show had four performers on stage and just four
of us in the audience. At another show I was the only person in the
audience (plus the director). A third show featured award-winning performers
and less than a dozen in the seats. I am happy to report that in all
cases the performers went ahead and gave their all - as though there
wasn't an empty seat in the house (one even addressed the audience as
"Ladies and Gentlemen" when I was the only person there).
Now I could
simply say that none of the shows were running ads on CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE, but I know that was not the reason for the small turnouts.
Running an ad - even on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - does
not alone an audience create. There are Broadway shows spending hundreds
of thousands of dollars on radio, TV and print ads that are playing
to 40% capacity. Creating an audience takes a multi-faceted approach
- and has to start many weeks before your show, actually from the
day you get your booking dates confirmed.
First off,
you need to contact your friends and family. Cabaret was originated
as "friends and family" entertainment. Poets, songwriters, musicians
and other artists gathered in the small halls in Germany and France
to show off their latest creations. Soon the better presentations
were adopted by producers to be presented in larger and larger venues.
Songs were adopted by other performers. But it begins with friends
and family. And if you don't have a large family, work on making a
lot of friends. And friends who like cabaret are the best kind of
friends to make! Attend other shows (always a good way to meet other
cabaret fans while seeing what other performers are doing). If one
is available, join the local cabaret organization and attend their
networking events, parties, open-mics etc. And the worst way to try
to make friends is to talk about yourself! Ask them what they are
up to, what shows they have seen recently, what kind of music they
enjoy. They will eventually get around to asking you about yourself.
Next get the
word out (a banner ad is suggested, of course), but there are plenty
of free ways to spread the word. A press release sent to all the periodicals
and websites that cover cabaret is a must. That cabaret organization
you joined should have one available as well as the booking manager
of the venue you will be performing at (they have a stake in filling
the house, too). On my website you will see press releases written
by pros for such clubs as Feinstein's, Cafe Carlyle and the Algonquin
- the ritzy and expensive places that hire professionals to write
their releases. Check them out and see what style and format they
use. Remember, weekly and monthly periodicals need your release 3
to 5 weeks in advance. Websites need less time (I can get a release
up on my website in about 24 hours if I feel it is important enough).
And separate from the release send a personal invitation to the publication's
reviewer - along with another copy of the release - about a week or
two before your show.
I will tell
you now that mailing a post card often is a waste of money - I get
post cards mailed 10 to 20 days after they are mailed - about 50%
of the time after the event has taken place. Apparently the post office
takes its time when it comes to post cards. But fliers and cards left
in the racks and tables of clubs that permit it are always a good
way to promote. And if the club where you are leaving your flier has
an open mic piano bar, sing a song or two from your show (tip the
pianist and he just might ask you to sing every time you are in the
room).
Volunteer
to perform at benefits. Visit the piano bars that have open mic nights
and perform a few songs. Even if you don't have a show coming up soon,
get your name, your face, your voice out there. Unseen is unsold!
Join one of
those e-mail groups and when appropriate plug your show. Some "groups"
even have a system where your can arrange your message to be sent
out to all members of the group at specific times. Just don't overdo
it. Sometimes these e-mail promos begin to be spam. There is one person
who actually sends me a promo on his shows/events nearly daily! I
wrote him to please cut back the e-mails and got a nasty response
as though I was the offending one. Needless to say (but of course
I will say it anyway) I no longer read his e-mails.
Build your
mailing list. Start with those same family and friends and add to
the list by collecting the e-mail addresses of folks you meet or who
attend your show. Note of caution: do not "steal" e-mail addresses
off of e-mails you get that might list all recipients. Only add names
of folks who give you permission to send them e-mails. Then use the
list to keep in contact regularly even when you don't have a show
coming up (but again, don't overdo it). Keep your name in front of
them without being obnoxious.
These are
just a few ideas - check out the TIPS & FAQS section on my website
for more ideas and more particulars. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE wants
to help you publicize your event. My message board is free to anyone
- just follow the rules. I invite press releases and if I feel they
are appropriate I will include them on the website and mention them
in the newsletter. I even have a form on my website that you can fill
in if you aren't sure of what I need.
Did you check out the new
photo on the "PHOTO OF THE WEEK" page (just click on the link on my
home page, just below the two super-side bar ads in the left column)?
Someone sent me a vintage photo and you are invited to guess the identity
of the three people in the photo. No prize - but send in your guesses.
All three are famous - sort of. Only three people have sent in a guess
so far (no one has been able to name all three).
Now I have to get ready to
go into town. I must warn everyone that over the next few days there
may be times when I will not have access to your e-mails and the message
board to release your messages. The MONDAY issue might be a day late
as well. Hopefully by the end of next week all will be back to normal.
NOW FOR NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down
on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by
cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change weekly,
cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter.
The CABARET NEWS pages on the website are updated regularly, and cover
all areas of the world.
SPECIAL LATE BREAKING NEWS
I am sure you will find information

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing
on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send in your flier, press release
and/or other promotional materials clearly showing the discount offer.
That information will be used as the basis for the MEMBER DEALS page
notice, as well as for the newsletter listing. Please be sure to check
with the venue where you are performing to be sure that these discounts
will be honored.
Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee that
the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact the
parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove
the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.
ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE
NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows
around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET
NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you get an item
posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website?
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the
complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related
event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send
me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your
flier or a reference to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release
with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting
backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of
those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead
to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings
request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in
and use for the website).
IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter
I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find
published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?
Your membership donations
support this publication and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. If
you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and would like to support us, why
not join as a supporting member? Your donation is most important to
me, not just to pay for my food, cable, phone, DSL and rent, etc., but
also as a confirmation of your appreciation. Can you please help?
For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE

I realize that there is probably
far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading,
but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their
shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most
important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on
my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search
engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your membership donations make this all
possible.
Please support these newsletters
and the website, and help me cover cabaret events by joining CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE this week. I truly believe that everyone receiving these
e-mails and everyone who visits the website and the blog are receiving
value far higher than the minimal $20 annual SILVER membership. I am
spreading the news about you - your friends - performers all over the
world - twice a week by e-mail and every day on the web. I need your
support to do this. Joining as a supporting member is so simple - you
don't even have to find a stamp or an envelope: just click on the JOIN
HERE button on the website.
Thanks to the folks that joined and/or ordered banner
ads this past week. Your continued support encourages me tremendously.
