TODAY'S FEATURE STORY
CABARET PITTSBURGH ANNOUNCES EXPANDED SERIES OF EVENTS
Cabaret Pittsburgh (http://www.cabaretpgh.org/ ), after a brief hiatus
to accommodate the move of its founder and president Stephanie Riso
to NYC, returns on August 31st with increased activities in the cultural
district. Now entering its second year as an independent 501c3 public
charity, the organization is taking the advice of the local artists
by expanding its programming to include the Riverview Series, Inspiring
Artists Series and the return of its Local Showcase Series. All three
programs work together in an effort to educate both the public and local
aspiring artists to the great impact and opportunity that exists by
participating in intimate musical events.
The 2007/2008 Riverview Series is expanding to a monthly
series of national artists which kicks-off with a double-bill of Stephen
Schwartz, composer of Broadway's Wicked, and his colleague, singer,
and marketing guru, Lee Lessack on Friday, August 31st. They are followed
by Karen Akers on Friday, September 28th, who is coming to Pittsburgh
after an engagement at THE ALGONQUIN OAK ROOM in NYC, followed by
singer/songwriter Amanda McBroom on Friday, November 30th. In 2008,
jazz singer Wesla Whitfield will appear on Friday, January 18th, 2008,
Robert Cuccioli with a Valentine's surprise on Friday, February 15th,
KT Sullivan on Friday, March 21st, and the series closes with Mel
Carter on Friday, April 18th (2008).
Cabaret Pittsburgh, in conjunction with the national
series, offers the Inspiring Artists Series, master classes and forums
that connect the national artists with local talent for growth, development,
and networking. This season participants will have the chance to sing
their favorite Schwartz song with the composer himself accompanying
them in a master class entitled "Connecting the Singer to the Songwriter."
This is scheduled for Saturday, September 1, 2007 in the morning hours,
followed by a session led by Lee Lessack, founder of LML music distribution
and the newly created Spot On Entertainment, entitled "Marketing and
Distributing your Individual Talent." In 2008, Robert Cuccioli, a
director and Broadway performer, will offer a master class "Directors
and Performers - Bridging the Gap." These events can come free to
students as part of a special annual subscription to Cabaret Pittsburgh
or range from $30 - $60 individually.
Finally, Cabaret Pittsburgh has announced the enhanced
Local Showcase Series which will again offer paid performance opportunity
to local artists, with the added opportunity to network with specially
invited industry professionals. Two showcases are slated for October
2007 and April 2008, locations TBA. Talent must audition to be considered,
and there are discounted ticket prices to see the showcase for those
students who buy an annual student subscription package to Cabaret
Pittsburgh.
The Riverview Series subscription prices start at $280
plus tax, and premium pricing begins at $320 for seven evenings. A
full student subscription for the entire Riverview Series is $80 plus
tax, and a special annual student Cabaret Pittsburgh package incorporating
all three programs is $45 plus tax - the price of one cabaret ticket.
Finally, overnight cabaret hotel packages for two at the four-diamond
RENAISSANCE PITTSBURGH HOTEL (107 Sixth Street, Pittsburgh, PA) are
available for $199 plus tax and can be purchased by calling 1-866-454-4400.
The Riverview Series artists' fees are generously underwritten by
Richard E. Rauh.

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
Just when CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE was getting back on track financially
after a steep drop in banner ad and membership income in December and
January, we received a notice on March 1st from the landlord that he
wants to move part of his family back into this apartment on May 1st
- meaning CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE needs new digs quickly. This will result
in some unanticipated costs that cannot be avoided. I found a new home,
but need your help.
If you have postponed joining as a member, or if would
like to make a special contribution to help us out, your gifts/memberships
would be especially appreciated this week. For a quick and easy way

HERE & THERE
Keep in mind that at sundown today Passover begins, and the weekend
starts with Christians celebrating "Good Friday" and ends on Sunday
with Easter. And the circus is in town. This combination of events will
mean vast changes in traffic flows here in NYC and the possibility of
crowded sidewalks, etc. Plan early, leave early and arrive early so
you don't miss out on any of the terrific cabaret events planned for
this week.
We hit a little speed-bump on out move out of Queens - the person who
was going to assist by using his car to ferry our possessions to Manhattan
this week has to leave this afternoon for Chicago and will be gone the
rest of the week. So it looks like I will have to hire a "man-with-van"
person to make the move - I will be phoning for a quotation as soon
as this newsletter goes out. Last time, just to move from one part of
Queens to the other, cost over $150 but we did have a lot more stuff
to move at that time. Kind and generous friends and members have contributed
about $350 of the $500 I estimated I would be short, but I may have
been a little conservative in my numbers.
Renting a van so close to the first of the month could
be difficult - I will know later today. But I have revised my schedule
for the major part of the move (using the van if available) to Thursday
or Friday. This afternoon - before my friend leaves for Chicago -
he will help me move my computer and assorted attachments to the new
space. I will be dividing my time between the two locations - AM here
to continue packing and trashing - PM there working on the website
and next issue of the newsletter, than catching a cabaret event or
two before heading to one of my two homes (if it's Tuesday it must
be Queens).
Biggest problem is moving the stuff from the 3rd floor
here in Queens to the front door - I am useless at carrying stuff
on the stairs. But things usually have a way of working out - usually.
Fortunately the new apartment has an elevator! The past 5 years I
have been on the third floor both places I lived - it will be a relief
not having to climb all those stairs when I get home late at night
(which is often).
This issue is going out even earlier than last Thursday's issue so that
I can be free the rest of the morning to do some more packing and arrange
for that van. Then I will take apart all the connections on the computer
and pack everything in a few cartons for the trip into the city. Then
it all has to be re-assembled. The best part is that the actual computer
is the smallest and lightest item in the lot! The monitor is the heavy,
bulky piece. I did catch up on all news items sent me for events before
April 20th. I only have 5 more April items to post (they will be on
the website in the next few days and in Thursday's newsletter) and then
I will start on May items.
I will really miss my pal Daniel - last night we met in Jackson Heights
to help a bartender friend celebrate his birthday and to bid sort of
farewell to many of the friends I have made these past five years living
in Queens. He is supposed to be here at 10:00 am to help me pack up
the computer and carry things downstairs, but I left the party at 2:00
am and he was still "partying on." I am sure we will get together once
or twice a week at some cabaret event or another (he is a big fan of
Michael Holland and Karen Mack, as well as Tommy Femia). I will really
miss those times when he would arrive with an armload of groceries and
cook dinner - he loves to cook! Of course it is Ecuadorian style cooking
- they never heard of "medium rare" in Ecuador, and they make "Hen Soup"
not chicken soup.
I hope by this time all NYC area cabaret lovers have purchased their
tickets to the 2007 BACK STAGE BISTRO AWARD show on Monday April 9th
at GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB (208 West 23rd Street, NYC - 212-367-9000 - http://www.gothamcomedyclub.com/
) - bound to be a terrific show. This is the first time in some years
that the awards event is open to the public because of budget constraints.
This year Back Stage Editor-at-Large Sherri Eaker is counting on the
fact that the cabaret community wants the return of what was at one
time a sell-out event that was the talk of the town. Award winners are
given a chance to perform at the event, if they wish. Many of the award
recipients are also nominated for 2007 MAC AWARDS so for MAC members
attending the even can be especially helpful in making their ballot
decision. And if this show sells out, we may well be able to look forward
to this once more becoming an annual event! SEE FULL STORY ON THE WEBSITE
at http://www.svhamstra.com/NewsNYC070409Bistro.shtml
I spent Friday afternoon first helping one of my "MAC" clients (the
computer, not the organization) with some network problems, and then
went downtown to the new apartment getting the room ready for the move
(which was originally planned to start over the weekend). At 9:30 I
went crosstown to HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth
Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/
) where Colm Reilly and Shane Matthews were holding a party to celebrate
their club's 3rd Anniversary. What fun - what food - what a crowd! And
the fabulous LOUNGE-O-LEERS as a bonus! And it was a special treat to
just "table hop" and meet so many cabaret friends (and make a few news
ones as well). Congratulations once more to this handsome Chelsea duo
- and we all hope for many many more anniversary celebrations at HELEN'S
in the years to come.
Once again, for those folks who signed up for the NYC PICKS e-mails,
which had been sent out twice a week, the service has been discontinued
due to lack of interest. Only about 35 folks signed on (we decided that
100 names were necessary to make it worthwhile). Currently there are
over 350 subscribers to the NYC Bulletin Service (announcing show cancellations,
special news and other items of interest mainly to NYC area readers),
and this service - which is strictly only for special notices - is continuing.
The bi-weekly picks took about an hour to prepare each time and with
so few people interested I decided to use that time for other work.
SAVE THE DATE: Wednesday, April 11th for a very special "Welcome Back
to Manhattan CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE" coming to a cabaret near you in
conjunction with an already scheduled cabaret show.
NYC's newest piano bar, UNCLE CHARLIE'S (139 East 45th Street, NYC -
http://www.unclecharliesnyc.com/
) is now open - their website is active (while still being constructed),
with "by request" piano bar Thursdays through Saturdays from 9:00 pm
to 2:00 am featuring singer/pianist David Pellegrene. I haven't had a
chance to stop by yet but plan to get there later this week. You will
be able to pick up David's CD "At Your Request" (what a coincidence)
while you are there. The official GRAND OPENING will be coming up soon
- if you get there now you can get on their mailing list to receive
your own invitation.
No one - as yet - has been able to identify all three of the people
in the vintage photo someone sent me found on the "PHOTO OF THE WEEK"
page (just click on the link on my home page, just below the two super-side
bar ads in the left column) - one person has gotten 2 out of 3. You
are invited to guess the identity of the three people in the photo.
No prize - but send in your guesses. All three are famous - sort of.
I will admit, the third person is a tough one - and it is not Peter
Alan (but that is a close guess).
With the final MAC AWARD nominees now being voted on, a number of performers
are preparing repeat performances of their 2006 shows as a means of
showing the voters their stuff. But getting the word out about a show
on short notice becomes a problem. Need I remind you of the advantages
of running an ad on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE? Unlike an expensive to print,
expensive to mail, post card or flier, a banner on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
is seen every day, again and again - not seen just once and tossed in
the recycle bin. And it is seen by cabaret lovers (and MAC voters) all
over the world (even by folks who might not be able to make your show)
again and again, every day.
Just click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top
of every page on the website to see sample banners, prices, sizes
and styles. There are ad styles available and affordable to every
taste and price range. And as an added bonus, your cabaret or CD offering
gets a mention in every MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which
is e-mailed to over 2,700 cabaret lovers around the world. By the
way, the lowest cost ads (side bars at just $25 per week) are limited
to 5 per week. In most instances, we can have your banner or ad up
and running within 24 hours!
It is nearly 10:00 am and time to send this issue off and get to work
preparing for phase one of the move. I will be "off the air" for several
hours today - my new roommate has a computer and we will share his DSL
line, and just in case I don't get "hooked up" right away I can use
his machine to check the message board and website. Spam attacks on
the message board continue with 40 - 60 obscene messages posted daily.
In fact over the weekend the board was "hacked" twice - deleting all
messages. Fortunately I keep a backup now every few hours. I restored
both times but some messages may have been lost (between backups). All
this means extra work for me during a period when I don't have the extra
time! Sad part is that there are folks out there (we have traced the
spam to some Baltic country) wasting just as much time posting these
spam messages that no one gets to see!
Now on with the show!
AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER: Each MONDAY issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter
includes listings for all the banner advertisers on the website as long
as the banner is running. In most cases there are more detailed articles
on these items in the CABARET NEWS section of the website.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of
the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show,
CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do
not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases
I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter,
so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
If you don't have a press release, just click here:
http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for
the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release,
one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns,
embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply
a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things
that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere.
I never open them!
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep
in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows
and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important,
and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website
and on the blog means two additional places where the show information
can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your
banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.
Now, if all goes according to my revised plan, the next issue of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE will be sent from the new "home office." Hopefully it
will be on Thursday as usual. One more reminder - your membership or
donation would really help reduce the financial stress we are undergoing
- not that moving isn't stress in and of itself. Thanks to all who joined
and/or sent donations over the past few days. Your support is most appreciated.
And that is just about the way it was.
