all cabaret fans are urged to show their support for BACK STAGE Editor-at-Large
Sherry Eaker who is producing the show. If it is a sell out it may
once more become "the hottest ticket in town" every spring. Plus it
will show the "powers that be" at the magazine the importance of cabaret
to the folks in NYC.
Tickets cost $35 plus there is a 2-beverage minimum.
Premium tickets cost $60, plus the two drink minimum, and include
a champagne reception and preferred seating in the showroom. To purchase,

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
After tomorrow I should be totally moved to the new apartment in Manhattan
- I sort of ran out of funds on Saturday and had to postpone part of
the move to this afternoon - after this newsletter goes out and before
the BACK STAGE BISTRO AWARDS GALA tonight at GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB (208
West 23rd Street, NYC - 212-367-9000 - http://www.gothamcomedyclub.com/
) with the final move tomorrow. Making this transition has taken far
longer and cost far more than I estimated, and my special thanks goes
out to several folks who came through with extra donations or paid in
advance for 2007-2008 memberships, allowing me to complete the task.
I don't know if this has been the most stressful 10 days in my life,
but I will say it ranks up near the top.
My move back to Manhattan will have one special benefit
to readers of the newsletter, visitors to the website and performers
at all venues. For the past two years I shared an apartment with four
(and at times five) roommates. These conditions made it nearly impossible
to write reviews of shows seen during this period. Writing - at least
for me - requires a quiet, uninterrupted time and space, and most
importantly a frame of mind free from tension and stress. That certainly
has not been the situation of late.
In the new location I am sharing the apartment with
just one other person and will have my own private room at the far
end. It is bright, spacious and quiet. This should provide just the
atmosphere I need to get back to serious writing. With so few reviewers
currently covering cabaret in depth in the city, I am anxious to get
back to writing reviews in order to provide as much information about
cabaret events to my members, subscribers and website visitors.
Plus I will be spending two or more hours less each
day in transit between shows and home. The new apartment is less than
1/2 hour travel from nearly every cabaret room in town - a few of
them only 15 minutes away! And I am now able to see shows later in
the evening without having to face a long and lonely subway ride and
a long walk through dark streets to get home. The new apartment has
two 24-hour bus lines close at hand - one (N/S) that stops directly
in front of the building and the other (E/W) stops on the corner 1/2
block away. Each bus crosses a major subway hub within minutes.
With this improved location it will also be easier for
me to attend shows on Sundays - the subway system I regularly use
to go from Queens to Manhattan has been undergoing major repairs over
the weekends with route changes, long delays between trains and often
closed stations - meaning quite often I had to go 5 stations eastbound,
switch to westbound to get to my transfer station just two stops west
of where I started! In addition to having to climb several stairways
to make the switch, this often added as much as 40 minutes to my trip.
Consequently I usually skipped Sunday events.
HERE & THERE
This is the final newsletter coming to you from Queens. I thought I
would be writing this a week ago but I ran into several snags - expensive
snags - and my moving schedule slid by a whole week while I scurried
to find some additional funds. But the move is underway and should be
complete by Tuesday night. I will probably come back here on Wednesday
to clean up any mess I left behind an move to the curb a few bulky items
for the garbage collectors to pick up (collections are Mondays & Thursdays).
A big thank-you to the folks - members, friends and family - who came
through with their donations in response to my pleas.
It has been rather busy in the apartment this past week
- there are five of us moving to three locations all at the same time.
Everyone has to squeeze their way around packing cartons in order
to move from room to room. I spent what will hopefully be my final
night here last night and I can't wait to spend my first night at
the new space tonight - ah, peace at last!
I was really thrilled to get a note last night from Sherry Eaker informing
me that "there are only a few seats left" for the BACK STAGE BISTRO
AWARD GALA tonight at GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB (208 West 23rd Street, NYC
- 212-367-9000 - http://www.gothamcomedyclub.com/
). It should truly be a glittering evening of exciting entertainment,
networking and celebration. The cabaret fans in NYC have really missed
this event for the past few years and everyone is eagerly anticipating
its return. I might even wear a tie to mark the occasion! (oops - I
think my tie is in one of the 14 cartons I packed to move and I forgot
which one!).
A big congratulations is in order to the amazing NYC
cabaret community which has unified in a way not seen in years to
"get out the crowd" to support this event. Perhaps this will finally
lay to rest the talk in some circles that NYC cabaret folks are a
divided (mostly wishful thinking by a few that seek personal power
by continuing to promote division). And hats off to Sherry Eaker for
having faith in the cabaret community and risking much to produce
the event.
Next big event on the NYC Cabaret Calendar of course is the fast approaching
MAC AWARDS GALA to be held on Tuesday night, May 1st at BB KING'S BLUES
CLUB (237 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-997-4144 - http://www.bbkingsblues.com/
). I spoke with MAC VP Scott Barbarino the other night at a cabaret
show we were both attending and he mentioned that MAC was quite surprised
at the number of tickets sold already - usually MAC attendees wait until
the last week before the event to purchase tickets. A few factors are
in force this year: MAC has chosen a smaller venue (600 seats instead
of over 1000 like last year - with many seats already set aside for
nominees and press) and cabaret style (table seating with food/drinks
available). Plus, with food and drinks available at the show there is
no need to purchase a second ticket for an after-show party. Instead
the member clubs are free to arrange parties in their own rooms without
having to compete with a MAC after-show event. Tickets are available
right now at the BB KING box office, at http://www.ticketmaster.com/
and by phone at 212-307-7171. Tickets are priced $45 and $125 with a
2-drink minimum. By way, showtime is at 7:30 pm but the room will be
open for seating at 6:00 pm to allow for lots of pre-show schmoozing.
And hold on to your hats - there is another big cabaret event on the
horizon - the SEVENTEENTH BIRTHDAY OF CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, to be
held in July at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440
- http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) - precise date to be announced. Showtime is 7:00 pm and tickets will
be available after May 1st. This is the same date that 2007-2008 memberships
will become available.
Tickets will cost $25 for new or renewing 2007-2008
members, $35 for non-members or 2006-2007 who have not renewed. There
will be a special form on the website to order tickets - no reservations
will be taken by THE METROPOLITAN ROOM until July 1st (if there are
any seats unsold). The theme for the show will be "My Favorite Year"
celebrating the year 1957 - the 50th anniversary of year I got my
driver's license, graduated from high school, and found true love.
OK I am lying about the love part. The theme also happens to be the
title of my favorite song. Of course you will be reading more about
this event in the weeks to come. Stay tuned.
Once again, for those folks who signed up for the NYC PICKS e-mails,
which had been sent out twice a week, the service has been discontinued
due to lack of interest. Only about 35 folks signed on (we decided that
100 names were necessary to make it worthwhile). Currently there are
over 350 subscribers to the NYC Bulletin Service (announcing show cancellations,
special news and other items of interest mainly to NYC area readers),
and this service - which is strictly only for special notices - is continuing.
The bi-weekly picks took about an hour to prepare each time and with
so few people interested I decided to use that time for other work.
I am keeping the list on file just in case some more subscriptions come
in.
No one - as yet - has been able to identify all three of the people
in the vintage photo someone sent me found on the "PHOTO OF THE WEEK"
page (just click on the link on my home page, just below the two super-side
bar ads in the left column) - one person has gotten 2 out of 3. You
are invited to guess the identity of the three people in the photo.
No prize - but send in your guesses. All three are famous - sort of.
I will admit, the third person is a tough one - and it is not Peter
Alan (but that is a close guess).
With the final MAC AWARD nominees now being voted on, a number of performers
are preparing repeat performances of their 2006 shows as a means of
showing the voters their stuff. But getting the word out about a show
on short notice becomes a problem. Need I remind you of the advantages
of running an ad on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE? Unlike an expensive to print,
expensive to mail, post card or flier, a banner on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
is seen every day, again and again - not seen just once and tossed in
the recycle bin. And it is seen by cabaret lovers (and MAC voters) all
over the world (even by folks who might not be able to make your show)
again and again, every day.
Just click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top
of every page on the website to see sample banners, prices, sizes
and styles. There are ad styles available and affordable to every
taste and price range. And as an added bonus, your cabaret or CD offering
gets a mention in every MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which
is e-mailed to over 2,700 cabaret lovers around the world. By the
way, the lowest cost ads (side bars at just $25 per week) are limited
to 5 per week. In most instances, we can have your banner or ad up
and running within 24 hours!
This issue was actually started on Saturday so it is a lot longer than
I anticipated. Now we will close off, send it out and get to work. Movers
are due here at 1:00 pm, but everything is ready to go so I can relax
a while.
Full report on the move in the next issue - and if I
get the computer hooked up this afternoon in the new apartment without
any complications, those subscribed to the NYC BULLETIN SERVICE will
get a report on the BISTRO AWARD show tomorrow, and I will post it
on the website a.s.a.p.
Thanks once more for your patience and support through
this rather difficult period.
AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER: Each MONDAY issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter
includes listings for all the banner advertisers on the website as long
as the banner is running. In most cases there are more detailed articles
on these items in the CABARET NEWS section of the website.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.svhamstra.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at
least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show,
CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do
not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases
I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter,
so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
If you don't have a press release, just click here:
http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for
the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release,
one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns,
embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply
a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things
that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere.
I never open them!
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep
in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows
and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important,
and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website
and on the blog means two additional places where the show information
can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your
banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.
As soon as I send this out and post a copy on the website, I will be
taking my computer "off the air" and canceling the DSL line here in
Queens. Then it is off to NYC to connect to the line there and try to
be back on the air by 5:00 pm in time to make it to GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB
and the BISTRO AWARDS show at 6:00 pm. If I look just a little exhausted,
please excuse.
And that is just about the way it was.
