TODAY'S FEATURE STORY
BROADWAY BY THE YEAR: THE BROADWAY MUSICALS OF 1959 APRIL 30TH
THE TOWN HALL (123 West 43rd Street, NYC - 212-997-1929 - http://www.the-townhall-nyc.org/
) will present Broadway By the Year: The Broadway Musicals of 1959 on
Monday April 30th at 8:00 pm. The critically acclaimed series, now in
its seventh season and created, written and hosted by Scott Siegel,
will be directed by two-time Tony nominee Marc Kudisch, whose long list
of Broadway credits includes, most recently, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
and Assassins. It will feature music from a uniquely rich season in
the American musical theatre; 1959 spawned such classics as Gypsy and
The Sound of Music (which also pitted two of the First Ladies of the
American Theatre, Mary Martin and Ethel Merman, against each other for
Tony Awards). In addition, Once Upon A Mattress brought a talented young
comedian named Carol Burnett to prominence as the unglamorous but winning
Princess Winifred the Woebegone.
The cast for "1959" includes Emily Skinner (Jekyll and
Hyde, Side Show), Bruce Vilanch (multiple Emmy-winner and star of
Hairspray), Nancy Lemanager (Never Gonna Dance), Mark Jacoby (Sweeney
Todd, Phantom of the Opera), and Sara Jane McMahon (The Pirates of
Penzance).
Scott Siegel created the Broadway by the Year series
and the Broadway Cabaret Festival series for The Town Hall. He also
conceived and produces both Broadway Unplugged and The Nightlife Awards
at The Town Hall, and most recently began his tenth year as host of
The Town Hall Feature Film Seminar Series. Scott and his wife Barbara
are authors (47 books, including The Encyclopedia of Hollywood) and
critics ("The Siegel Column" and "The Two of Clubs").
Tickets $40 & $45.
IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
MY FAVORITE YEAR IS THEME OF SEVENTEENTH BIRTHDAY PARTY
There is another big cabaret event on the horizon - the SEVENTEENTH
BIRTHDAY OF CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, to be held in July at THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) - precise date to be announced. Showtime is 7:00 pm and tickets will
be available after May 1st on the website. Also on May 1st 2007-2008
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE memberships will become available.
Tickets for the birthday show will cost $25 for new
or renewing 2007-2008 members, $35 for non-members or 2006-2007 who
have not renewed. There will be a special form on the website to order
tickets - no reservations will be taken by THE METROPOLITAN ROOM until
July 1st (if there are any seats unsold).
The theme for the show "My Favorite Year" celebrates
the year 1957 - the 50th anniversary of year I got my driver's license
(at age 17!), graduated from high school, and found true love. OK
I am lying about the true love part. The theme also happens to be
the title of my favorite song (by Amanda McBroom). Of course you will
be reading more about this event in the weeks to come. Stay tuned.
HERE & THERE
We're just a bit late getting this issue out today. I had a major "senior
moment" yesterday as I was deleting items from my "news" files (I delete
articles already included in the issues) when I inadvertently also deleted
the entire issue for today! I never noticed this when I quit writing
last night, and since my computer makes a scheduled backup of itself
each morning around 3:30 am, I lost my only backup copy as well.
When I discovered this around 7:00 am I went into panic
mode for several minutes. I soon discovered that it was not as large
a disaster as I originally thought. Let me take you "behind the scenes"
of how things work here.
When press releases and news items come in, the title
of the item is changes when necessary to include the date of the event
in the article. Then I take each item in date order and re-write it
in my style, removing things like quotes from reviews, and obvious
"puff" phrases and adding missing items (like the day of week). Then
there is a spell check, a "gremlin" check and then the item goes on
the website. Next I take the first paragraph and use that to add to
the next issue of the newsletter (I add the items as I load them on
the website). Finally, I take the paragraph and recode it and load
it on the blog. Well, yesterday I didn't have time to add items to
the blog, so I put them in my "to do" folder. So all the full articles
were on the website, and all the "first paragraphs" were in the "to
do" folder, so I could reconstruct the entire issue - except for two
items that I did not save. I was able to contact the folks involved
and they were kind enough to resend them to me.
But the reconstruction used up a lot of the time that
I could have spent writing this "here & there" section.
My schedule this week was totally changed, almost on a daily basis.
After Monday's issue went out, and before the BACK STAGE Bistro Awards
Gala at THE GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB, Daniel helped me load two suitcases
of clothing and two cartons containing my computer stuff, plus the monitor,
into a "black car" in Queens and I officially moved into Manhattan.
Left behind to be moved by van on Tuesday were 14 cartons of stuff plus
a cabinet and some "odds and ends." We got things unloaded and unpacked
and I set up the computer and started to make the connection to the
DSL line already here. Problem was that the ethernet cable was 10 feet
too short! By hi-jacking someone in the areas WiFi signal I was temporarily
able to connect to the internet, check the website, receive my e-mails,
and even monitor the message board. But for some unexplained reason
I could not send any e-mails. No time to fiddle - I had to get to the
show by 6:30 pm. (see next item)
Tuesday was major moving day - the van was supposed
to meet Daniel and one of his friends at the apartment in Queens,
be loaded and bring everything to the city. But that was not to be.
As I mentioned in an earlier issue, there were four other people living
in the apartment, and they were supposed to move out on Monday. Unknown
to us they decided to postpone until Tuesday and when Daniel arrived
the place was in chaos. With 5 rooms of furniture to load into the
truck there was no way we could make our move. So we cancelled the
van.
So the move was rescheduled to Wednesday, but now the
van was no longer available. But Daniel had observed on Monday that
the Lincoln Town Car had a huge trunk, so on Wednesday (yesterday)
took 1/2 of the cartons downstairs, ordered a car, loaded it, and
met me outside where we unloaded the stuff and moved it in. Meantime
I was able to purchase a longer cable and get "on the air."
Today will be a repeat of yesterday, and hopefully by
this afternoon all my possessions will be here. I will meet Daniel
in Queens tomorrow just to give the apartment the "once over" to check
for anything left behind that we didn't intend to leave behind, and
turn over the keys. At long last!
What a fine party it was! The BACK STAGE Bistro Award Gala on Monday
night at GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB (208 West 23rd Street, NYC - 212-367-9000
- http://www.gothamcomedyclub.com/
) was everything I expected and even more! First off, the show was SOLD
OUT! The NYC cabaret community came out en-masse to support the show.
It was amazing to see that when it really matters all differences are
put aside and divisions disappear. It was a long show (nearly four hours)
but worth staying all night for - especially with Betty Buckley coming
on stage as the last performer. I am writing a complete report on the
show and will be posting it on the website shortly. The whole "moving
to Manhattan" episode threw off kilter my previously planned writing
schedule. Hopefully this event will once more become an annual highlight
on the cabaret scene here in NYC - it has been sorely missed.
But I will say something today about the folks who own
GOTHAM. These are the same folks who gifted the NYC cabaret community
with THE METROPOLITAN ROOM. Chris and Steve Mazzilli, who along with
booking manager Lennie Watts received a special award for outstanding
achievement with their new club, have brought new life to cabaret
in NYC. By some magic, a lot of planning and organization, and just
plain hard work, these folks, within less than one year, have created
a new standard for cabaret rooms in this town. Chris and Steve, when
they moved their GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB to a new and larger space a few
blocks away, could have simply sold their old location. Instead they
chose to convert it to a cabaret room. Wisely choosing Lennie Watts
to join them in this project (Lennie previously managed MAMA ROSE'S
and THE ENCORE, plus has many years experience performing in, directing,
teaching and working in cabaret in this town), gathering a staff consisting
mainly of cabaret performers and technicians, investing in the best
equipment available, and booking a wide spectrum of acts from all
levels and types of cabaret to perform, they have brought NYC cabaret
into the 21st century - a model for all cabaret rooms to follow.
Already other clubs in town have come alive - not to
copy the METROPOLITAN ROOM model but to instead review their own policies,
their own facilities and their staffing and booking policies. Each
one has (at least from what I am observing) begun readjusting to create
their own niche in the NYC cabaret scene. Thomas Honeck has moved
to open THE DUPLEX to offer a wider spectrum of acts, with special
attention to the new and emerging performers on the scene - and reports
that the past few months have not just been artistically rewarding:
the room has had its most profitable quarter in years! Collette Black,
who is especially nurturing to newcomers, has developed UPSTAIRS AT
ROSES TURN into a mecca for comedy, improv and "leading edge" cabaret.
Colm Reilly and Shane Matthews have also told me they are reorganizing
their booking policies and have recently upgraded the sound system
and other technical facilities at HELEN'S. Phil Bond has taken the
very underutilized LAURIE BEECHMAN and created brand new major destination
for cabaret performers and fans. Changes are also apparent at DON'T
TELL MAMA, where Sidney Myer has been making some major changes to
reinvigorate the "grande dame" of cabarets in this town, garnering
plaudits from NY1 and ZAGAT and being named the best in town by the
readers of BACK STAGE in a recent survey.
So to Chris, Steve and Lennie, congratulations on your
BACK STAGE Bistro recognition, and a huge thank you from this passionate
cabaret fan for your vision, your commitment and your wonderful gift
to cabaret in this town.
I could go on - but it is 1:30 pm and this issue must go out and I must
get ready for the arrival of the rest of my stuff.

SEE FULL STORY ON THE WEBSITE at http://www.svhamstra.com/NewsNYC070430Bdwy.html

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of
the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show,
CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do
not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release
with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting
backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of
those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead
to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings
request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in
and use for the website).

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send
in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly
showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis
for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing.
Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to be
sure that these discounts will be honored.
Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee that
the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact the
parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove
the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.
IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
Your membership donations support this publication and the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website. If you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and would like
to support us, why not join as a supporting member? Your donation is
most important to me, not just to pay for my food, cable, phone, DSL
and rent, etc., but also as a confirmation of your appreciation. Can
you please help?
For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE, just click on the JOIN HERE button on the website. You can
even make your membership donation by credit card, using PayPal. If
you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check
made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE,
676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.
I realize that there is probably far more information here than you
might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that
for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few
publications that spread the word about their shows and performances.
To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact
that every issue published is also posted on my website means another
place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.)
alike. Your membership donations make this all possible.
This issue is going out a little later than usual, for the reason stated
near the top. And now, as I await the very last "shipment" from Queens,
I continue to unpack the cartons that came in yesterday. This time around
I intend to unpack all the boxes except the collection of CDs - the
bookcases I used in Queens were "trashed" before the move (they cost
$19 each set, and were worth every penny). I will have to wait a bit
to replace them, but nearly all the recent CDs are already loaded on
my computer in my iTunes library - ready to be listened to at any time.
The next several days will be spent unpacking and organizing
my stuff. By Monday all should be back to normal (I hope). Meantime,
thanks once more to all who came through earlier this week when we
hit that "financial speed bump." With your support "the sparrow still
flies."
And that is just about the way it was.
