HERE & THERE
About a dozen or more years ago I wrote an item in the "print" version of CABARET HOTLINE (before the internet took hold) based on the information provided by a bartender at a club, who informed me that I should try to visit as often as possible because the club had been sold, would be closing in a few weeks, and would be reopened as an Italian restaurant. This, I was told, had been announced at a staff meeting, and therefor known to be correct and needing no confirmation. I dutifully informed my readers, assuming that the club would be happy to have a sudden rush of business before they closed.

Was I wrong! I met the manager of the club on the street a few nights later and he literally screamed at me, telling me that there was no truth to what I had written and demanding to know where I had heard such a false rumor. He was livid. I apologized and told him I would print a correction. But first I rechecked with the bartender - who again insisted that the club would close - I never got around to printing the correction because sure enough, at the end of the month, the club closed - it is still an Italian restaurant.

I write this because I feel a sense of dejavu - two nights ago I heard a similar story from a worker at another club, this time saying that the place would be closing at the end of June - it had been announced at some type of staff meeting. I confirmed this with another staff person I knew, and was going to try to stop by the club last night for confirmation (or perhaps denial), but it was raining too hard - so the rest of this story will have to wait, since I don't want to have a similar problem this time around. Just remember you almost heard it here first.

It sort of has been a dejavu week for me. You see, when I first moved into Manhattan from New Jersey about 30 years ago, the first place that I lived was on St. Mark's Place (really part of East 8th Street renamed) between Second & First Avenues. Now I live just 2 blocks north and 2 blocks east, and found myself walking the same neighborhoods as three decades ago (sort of). A lot has changed, and a lot has remained the same. More on this as I explore my old-new neighborhood in the weeks to come.

Then there are the times that dejavu fails you. For example, for the past 11 months I have been going by subway via to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM via the "F" subway train, arriving at the 23rd Street station from the north, exiting on the southwest corner. Now I arrive from the south and exit on the northwest corner. Arriving at the street level for the first time, I had absolutely no idea where I was, and even suspected that I was at the wrong stop! But that could not be, since I had just got on the train one stop earlier at 14th Street. I finally recognized the Best Buy store across the street and realized I was right in front of the Chase Bank Branch where I have used the cash machine often.

But wait - there's more dejavu (I guess I have lived so long I have no more chances to do something for the first time). When I was a kid, my dad had his business on Seventh Avenue and 16th Street and often on Saturdays and in the summer I would accompany him into Manhattan via what at that time we called "the Hudson Tubes" - now called PATH - and exit at 14th & Sixth Avenue and walk to Seventh. The PATH station is shared with the "F" train and now as I go uptown or arrive from uptown at this station I find myself tracing the same stairways and tunnels I walked with my dad nearly 60 years ago! Some of the old station signs are still there. I just don't remember all those people sleeping on the floor back then.

No one - as yet - has been able to identify all three of the people in the vintage photo someone sent me found on the "PHOTO OF THE WEEK" page (just click on the link on my home page, just below the two super-side bar ads in the left column) - one person has gotten 2 out of 3. You are invited to guess the identity of the three people in the photo. No prize - but send in your guesses. All three are famous - sort of. I will admit, the third person is a tough one - and it is not Peter Alan (but that is a close guess). A little GOOGLE search would give you the name - you just have to "connect the dots." Think dancer/singer, but not Peter Alan.

Did I mention rain? Have I been living too long? What was all that "hype" this weekend about rain on all the TV stations? They seemed to be proclaiming the end of the world. Naturally a lot of people cancelled their reservations for cabaret shows - and even a few shows were cancelled by the "faint of heart." Have we all turned into a bunch of wimps or are we all just being treated like a bunch of wimps by the media intent on increasing their ratings? What happened yesterday (and a bit this morning) was not Katrina, folks. Sure I got wet going to Euan Morton's show last night at 9:30 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - I sort of like his style. Rain means you get wet. Fire and brimstone would be another thing altogether. It was a "sold out" show but there were perhaps 20 no-shows. I even was uptown around 8:00 pm at CATERINA'S (316 East 53rd Street, NYC) to help Kelly Briggs celebrate his birthday (another dejavu item: Steven Lowenthal was at the piano - he was at the piano at THE FIVE OAKS many years ago when I lived in The Village). Sure it was raining, but thats what they have umbrellas for. And it was Kelly's birthday - worth getting wet for.

After 5 years or so of enjoying South American and Indian food in Queens, I have been enjoying lots of Italian food here in Manhattan this past week - the Italian Restaurant down the street recently reopened under new ownership and they have priced nearly their entire menu of Italian dishes at $4.99 each (including garlic bread). I had lasagna last night - huge portion.

Don't get disturbed if you see me walking with a cane for a few days - I have been pushing myself just a little bit too much this past week and the knee is "complaining" so I want to ease its burden a little. (For the benefit of new subscribers, "the knee" refers to my left knee which was operated on two years ago to reattach some ligaments that broke loose in a fall.) I have been doing a lot of walking lately - there seem to be a lot more places to walk to around here than in Queens.

OK, after this issue, I will finish off my report on the BACK STAGE Bistro Awards show. I promised Sherry Eaker it would go out over the weekend so I am already a day late. But a quick word on Awards. As Dottie Burman told me about 5 years ago when I was berating the large number of award shows and "top 10" or "top 20" lists regarding cabaret. Dottie reminded me that as far as NYC cabaret is concerned, since there is not a lot of money to be made, the performers are at least rewarded for their efforts to some extent by these award events and lists. She (as usual) was very correct. Which means I have to publish my own "best of 2006" list soon. BACK STAGE first, though.

Question: who was the idiot who was taking all those flash photos during the Bistro Award show? He even took a flash photo during the dramatic last phrase of the last line of the last song Betty Buckley was singing! Apparently he had no idea of what cabaret is about - totally unprofessional and very annoying to the people who spent about $100 or more apiece (including drinks and tips) to attend the event. And probably very annoying as well to the lighting techie who saw his handiwork ruined again and again by the glaring flash - an average of 3 or 4 per performer.

Am I all moved in, you ask? Not quite. We have one more car load to bring in from Queens - we took the weekend off from moving to give "the knee" a rest. Strictly non-essentials - except for my winter coat which I assumed I would not need right away. No phone service yet - in fact the phone still rings in Queens. That gets shut down today.

That's all for today - I want to send this off and get back to work on some important projects. For those not going away for the 4th of July weekend, please mark your datebook for the 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on July 6th at 7:00 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ). I am contacting some top acts, some newcomers and even a comic or two to appear in the show. As soon as I get some confirmations, I will start listing the performers. Tickets go on sale on the website on May first (members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will get a special early-bird ticket offer a few days ahead of the general sale). Sponsorships and program ads are available - SEE FULL STORY ON THE WEBSITE at http://www.svhamstra.com/NewsCH07070517th1.shtml

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them!

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places where the show information can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

Now that I am nearly settled in at my new "digs" I have a number of projects to complete. I will be taking a few nights off from cabaret while I attempt to complete at least three or four of them. Stay tuned.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
