CABARET FESTIVAL RETURNS TO DOWNTOWN ORLANDO
This April, THE MAD COW THEATRE (105 South Magnolia Avenue, Orlando, FL - 407-297-8788 - http://www.orlandocabaret.com/ ), the intimate 2-theatre complex in downtown Orlando plays host to THE FIFTH ANNUAL ORLANDO CABARET FESTIVAL. For 18 days, over 40 performances of jazz, pop, Broadway, comedy, and a few surprises will feature many of Central Florida's favorite artists, along with headliners from the New York Cabaret scene. This is a milestone year at Mad Cow Theatre, as it celebrates their 10th Anniversary Season of theatre, and the Fifth Anniversary of the Orlando Cabaret Festival! The Fifth Annual Orlando Cabaret Festival opens on Wednesday, April 26th and continues for three weeks through Sunday, May 13th. Schedule of artists and events can be found at http://www.orlandocabaret.com/ .

Each year, THE MAD COW THEATRE strives to bring exciting new acts, as well as favorites from previous Festivals. The biggest hit of 2006 was The Lascivious Biddies, who brought their hip, sophisticated and sassy sound from New York to O-Town. Last year they sold out four fabulous shows, so this year they've added a fifth! Also returning for her fourth year at the Festival is the incredibly talented Jaimie Roberts, whose beautiful voice and bubbly personality make her show a must-see.

They're also continuing the extremely popular It Was A Very Good Year series, as they celebrate the Great American Songbooks of 1929, 1939, and 1949 in three separate shows featuring some of cabaret's favorite performers. Once again the intimate Stage Right will feature all-table seating as it transforms into "Club Moo." There's a different show every night, so each evening of the Festival one can take in as many as three different and spectacular acts - a Cabaret-lover's dream!

The rest of the lineup is just as exciting, including 3 members of the legendary Toxic Audio: Michelle Mailhot brings her smoky, sexy, swingin' style to her solo show, while Jeremy and Shalisa James mix music and comedy in their double act Songs on The Spot. A group of award winning high-school whiz-kids called 5-Alone will blow you away, plus another "don't miss," Laura Hodos (the wicked Mrs. Lovett in this season's Sweeney Todd), teamed up with Heather Alexander to reveal what's Behind Every Great Man. Critically acclaimed Mark Baratelli brings his hysterical high-wire act Improv Cabaret to the Festival, and the a cappella sensations 4th Floor rock the room with everything from doo-wop to barbershop! Song and dance man Roy Alan (Prof. Harold Hill in this season's The Music Man) brings his immense talent and personality to an evening of classic Cabaret. Finally, acclaimed vocalist Amy Baker weaves magic with her voice as she sings Something Old, Something New.

Tickets are $20 for evening and weekend shows; $12 for weekday lunch shows. Special hotel and dinner packages available.

HERE & THERE
I guess you can say it is now complete - my move to Manhattan, that is. The last of the packing boxes arrived last night and now I can honestly I am here. I have actually living in the new space since last week Monday but last night the move was completed. The moving took a little longer than would normally be necessary since I was low on funds and so decided to move everything by car. This meant the move be made in segments on those days that a car was available. Of course there is a lot of unpacking still to do, and somehow I have more clothes than hangers, so the closet is a but unorganized, but at least there is no more to arrive.

Except for attending Laurel Masse's show on Tuesday night at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (I had to cancel attending her show twice and this was my last chance), this has been a planned "cabaret free" week. I really was running myself a little ragged, and overdid the stair-climbing thing, causing my knee to swell a bit. The rest has done me good, and hopefully I will be back on my rounds of shows and clubs before the weekend. I also think that the last of the cool weather we have been having is past - it is supposed to be in the mid-70s (f) by Sunday! Interestingly, the one item that was left in Queens until the final move was my winder coat - which I really could have used for a few days there. Of course now it is here, tucked away in the far corner of the closet, hopefully not to be seen until October or so.

Now I am working on plans for the 17th ANNIVERSARY PARTY at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on July 6th. At the event we will be presenting the 3rd Annual JEFF MATSON AWARDS. The JEFF MATSON AWARD was created to honor the memory of songwriter/writer/director/producer/graphic designer Jeff Matson, who passed away suddenly on April 2, 2005 from a rare blood disorder. His talents were many, but his greatest talent was that of inspiring and encouraging other performers towards perfection in their craft. Each year we try to choose one or two people who are truly deserving of this recognition. I had a little help in making the choices this year - the three previous recipients of this award, namely DC Anderson, Hector Coris and Trudi Mann. I will be announcing this year's choices on or about May 1st, when the tickets for the show officially go on sale (current members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will get an advance announcement and an opportunity to purchase tickets before the general sale starts). Seating is limited to 100 so watch for the announcement.

What's on your iPod? I will be starting a new section on the website about "cabaret CDs" in the next few days. As I wrote a few weeks back, thanks to a special "designated" donation from a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE I was finally able to replace the iPod that was stolen almost two years ago with a tiny little iPod shuffle. For a few weeks now I have been loading old and new CDs on the little gadget to give them an "uninterrupted" listen as I make my way around town. The other day it occurred to me that I should make a brief report (not quite a review, but a short comment or two) on the CDs I have been listening to. So, from time to time you might want to check a new section "What's On My iPod" on the website. Hopefully I will be able to track down where the CDs can be purchased as well. Stay tuned.

If you really want to have a great time you might want to check out Kristine Zbornik's show on Monday nights at 7:00 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ). If you feel frustrated as a cabaret performer, this is the show for you - one of the wildest, funniest, craziest and explosive shows seen in this town - ever. By the way, those same adjectives could be applied to the lady herself. Don't wait - I am sure that you, like I, will want to see it more than once. Check it out!

Some more great shows to see: Cynthia Crane is back for one night only this Friday at 7:00 pm at HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/ ) in her finest show yet (and this lady has put on a few dozen shows over the years, I am sure). It is as good as a cabaret show can get - and Ms. Crane has never sung better! Also at HELEN'S on Saturday, there are a pair of talented ladies doing a double-header: Leslie Orofino at 7:00 pm and Jeanne MacDonald at 9:30 pm. You can dine at HELEN'S in between! (Both are offering discounts to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members - see entire discount list further down in this issue).

More picks: Singer/composer/songwriter/entertainer Steven Lutvak this Sunday at 7:00 pm at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ); Teresa Fischer at 7:00 pm and Matt Malone at 9:00 pm, both at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ) this Friday night; Monday, the 23rd, also at DON'T TELL MAMA, Nancy Stearns at 7:00 pm and Vickie Phillips at 9:00 pm.

At THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) this Saturday night, one night only, Baby Jane Dexter at 8:00 pm - being taped for a "live CD." This is the show you will remember for months and years to come. Also at the METROPOLITAN ROOM on Saturday at 5:00 pm, newcomer Jim Speakes and on Sunday, Barb Fasano at 7:00 pm and Euan Morton at 9:30 pm; Downtown at UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438 - http://www.rosesturn.com/ ), Friday at 7:00 pm the incomparably funny Adriane Tolsch and Saturday at 7:00 pm the amazingly talented Brian Farley, going solo; Uptown tonight at THE TRIAD (158 West 72nd Street, NYC - 212-362-2511 - http://www.Triadnyc.com/ ), Julian Yao at 9:30 pm and on Friday night Scot Albertson at 9:00 pm. This is just a sampling of the great cabaret events going on in the next few days - and the weather promises to be perfect!

This is another "short issue" for two main reasons - I have been doing a lot of writing not connected with the newsletter, mainly some reviews, which should be popping up on the website soon (there are two great new Chicago Reviews by Carla Gordon already posted). Secondly, I spent a lot of time over the past few days getting my plans organized for the 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY. It should be the biggest and best yet - which means a lot of planning and work going into this year's show. So I will send this issue off and get back to work.

NOW FOR NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change weekly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter. The CABARET NEWS pages on the website are updated regularly, and cover all areas of the world.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.

By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website).

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing. Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to be sure that these discounts will be honored.

Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.

IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

Your membership donations support this publication and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. If you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and would like to support us, why not join as a supporting member? Your donation is most important to me, not just to pay for my food, cable, phone, DSL and rent, etc., but also as a confirmation of your appreciation. Can you please help?

For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, just click on the JOIN HERE button on the website. You can even make your membership donation by credit card, using PayPal. If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your membership donations make this all possible.

And that's all for today, folks. I have to dash to the grocery store so I can have lunch, and then my nap, and then back to do some writing. Another big thank you to all who through their generous gifts and donations made the move from Queens to Manhattan possible - and especially to my pal Daniel who has been super, helping me pack, getting things down three flights of stairs, and even checking the old apartment all this past week while I was no longer there to make sure the balance of my possessions were safe (the apartment has been vacant since last Wednesday).

If you have been trying to reach me by phone, it has been ringing in Queens all week with no one to answer it - and it probably will be a while before I get one hooked up here - need to sell a few more banners, etc. (Oh dear, I just realized - I have to get that phone disconnedted!) Meantime, I do have my cell phone, but that costs 18 cents a minute (it is one of those "prepaid" gadgets). Best and only way to reach me is by e-mail.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
