TODAY'S FEATURE STORY
MORE ABOUT THE CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY
The 17th BIRTHDAY OF CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be held on July 6th
at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440
- http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
). Showtime is 7:00 pm and we promise to try to keep the show to 90
minutes or less. Tickets will be available on May 1st on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website . On that same date, the 2007-2008 CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE memberships will become available. In fact we will
be offering a special "combo" price for those who wish to renew their
membership and purchase a ticket at the same time.
Tickets for the birthday show will cost (same as last
year) $25 for new or renewing 2007-2008 members, $20 for those who
renew or purchase a membership at the same time, and $35 for non-members
or 2006-2007 members who do not renew or purchase a membership.
There will be a special form on the website to order tickets - no
reservations will be taken by THE METROPOLITAN ROOM until July 1st
(if there are any seats unsold).
We are limiting ticket sales to 100 to assure everyone
a good seat (and provide seating for the performers - last year
they has to stand since we sold out all the seats in the room).
At the show we will also be presenting the 2007 JEFF
MATSON AWARD to two worthy recipients. The JEFF MATSON AWARD was
created to honor the memory of songwriter/writer/director/producer/graphic
designer Jeff Matson, who passed away suddenly on April 2, 2005
from a rare blood disorder. His talents were many, but his greatest
talent was that of inspiring and encouraging other performers towards
perfection in their craft. The two chosen this year are truly deserving
of this recognition. Their names will be announced in next Monday's
issue on April 30th.
The theme for the show "My Favorite Year" celebrates
the year 1957 - the 50th anniversary of year I got my driver's license
(at age 17!), graduated from high school, and found true love. OK
I am lying about the true love part. The event will also celebrate
my own personal birthday - number 68. The theme "My Favorite Year"
also happens to be the title of my favorite song. You will be reading
more about this event in the weeks to come.
I am lining up a list of top talent to perform at
the show some favorite performers of mine (to fit the "favorite
year" theme) to be announced as my invitations to perform are accepted.
As with every year's show, you can expect to see a mix of popular,
seasoned performers as well as some amazing newcomers taking part.
Already confirmed:
Pittsburgh based vocalist Alice Frazier, who was booked
for last year but had to cancel at the last minute because of a
family emergency.
Vocalist/actor "BBBAD" Bruce Clough, who hails from
Philadelphia and a really exciting newcomer to NYC cabaret.
Lennie Watts, "Mr. NY Cabaret" who books THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM and will lead off the night's entertainment.
Francesca Amari, who is "Miss Michigan Cabaret" of
Western Michigan - and lives in Grand Rapids, my old college town!
She is flying out just to be in the show!
Jay Rogers, award-winning musical comedy great, one
of the stars of George Winter's fabulous "Monday in the Dark With
George" revue, "Whoop-de-doo" "When Pigs Fly" and Keith Thompson's
"Kooky Tunes."
(AS WITH ALL LIVE ENTERTAINMENT EVENTS PERFORMERS SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
SIDEBAR AD SALE IN MAY & JUNE = 4-4-3
You can advertise your show, your CD, your website or even yourself
with a home-page side-bar ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
for less than $19 per week - and your ad will be seen by as many as
6000 viewers each day (based on our latest readership statistics).
In fact the square 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch ad is the perfect size to show
off your CD! Cost is $25 per week for the first three weeks, and the
4th week is free. There are a few rules, and there is a limit as well.
Only 5 home-page side-bar ads can run each week (2 are already taken
for the next few weeks) and ads must be paid for in advance via PayPal.
Of course they must relate to cabaret, and I reserve the right to
reject any ad for any reason. The ad will appear only on the opening
page of the website - at the top of the right hand column. They will
be displayed top-to-bottom in the order paid for (do not send payment
until you receive a PayPal invoice - this will avoid my having to
make a refund if all slots are already sold out.

HERE & THERE
Spring has spring - again! And, like many other things, it seems better
the second time around! Only a few days ago here in NYC we were being
pummeled by rain and experiencing 40 degree (f) temperatures. Today
is bright and sunny and the forecast calls for temperatures in the
80s! Yesterday was absolutely fantastic and I spent an hour or so
walking around the neighborhood, checking out the many "community
gardens" aflame with springtime flowers, and collecting take-out menus.
Delightful! I even had a typical NYC Sunday brunch - pancakes and
sausage at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at an outdoor table, basking
in the sun, enjoying a springtime breeze, listening to my iPod. Alone,
yet one with the world!
Answer me this conundrum: I moved my computer to the new apartment
about two weeks ago. I set it up, connected everything and made sure
all the wires and connections were neatly placed. Now I look behind
my desk this morning and all the wires are in a tangle! How can this
be? Are they alive? Do that have parties and orgies after the lights
go out and the computer shuts down? What is going on?
It has been nearly six weeks and no one - as yet - has been able to
identify all three of the people in the vintage photo someone sent
me that I posted on the "PHOTO OF THE WEEK" page (just click on the
link on my home page, just below the two super-side bar ads in the
left column) Two folks have gotten 2 out of 3 (the two women in the
photo) but no one can figure out the third person. You are invited
to guess the identity of the three people in the photo. No prize -
but send in your guesses. All three are famous - sort of. I will admit,
the male in the photo is a tough one. It is not Peter Alan (that gives
you a clue to one of the women). A little GOOGLE search would give
you the name if you google her - you just have to "connect the dots."
Think dancer/singer, but not Peter Alan.
Can one undergo a change of life at age 67.75? I have been pondering
this ever since attending a cabaret show on Saturday afternoon - only
my second show of the week. I had taken a break from "nightlife" sort
of, to recharge my batteries after a very stressful few weeks involving
moving to a new home. I was simply worn out. Meantime my daily chores
still had to be done: there were shows and events to attend, newsletters
to be written, web pages to be built, banner ads to be created, photos
to be resized and titled, reviews to be completed - all the little
things that accumulate to keep me behind my desk from about 7:00 am
to about 4:00 pm nearly every day (except for my daily 1 hour nap
at 2:00 pm). I truly live for Tuesdays - it is the one day of the
week I try to stay away from the computer as much as I can and do
something else - sometimes its laundry, sometimes it is grocery shopping,
and sometimes it is just plain goofing off.
But Saturday, when I saw Jim Speake's cabaret show
"I'm a Brass Band" (songs of Cy Coleman) at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM
at 5:00 pm, I had sort of a revelation. The show was great, and
if you are in the area this coming Saturday at 5:00 pm, it will
be repeated once more, and I urge you to catch it. It is more than
simply a cabaret - it is the type cabaret show I truly love to attend
because it fully realizes the three "C"s of of the genre: Connection
to song, connection to self, connection to audience. Mr. Speake
is a natural for cabaret. The soothing Alabama drawl, the honest
vocals that persuade you that you could get up there and sing, too
(no pretenses, no vocal tricks, no dramatic hogwash, just true,
honest vocals!). But it was the theme and the song choices (and
how they were delivered) that gave me pause - and in some ways touched
my inner self.
Jim started the show atop the piano singing a rousing
"Hey Look Me Over" from WILDCAT, and proceeded to a electrifying
"look out world, here I come!" finish. I was hooked! I didn't get
a song list so I can't give you a complete rundown of the show,
but nearly every song seemed to reach out to me - yes to me personally.
Here was this dapper, former furniture salesman from Atlanta, someone
I have never met, never heard sing before, urging me to forget about
getting older ("Thank God I'm Old" BARNUM), and challenging me to
take a fresh look at my life and where it is going. It was more
than the songs, more then the crisp delivery by Mr. Speake, more
than the splendid arrangements by Steven Ray Watkins performed with
extraordinary enthusiasm by the band (Michael Blanco on bass, Fred
Kennedy on percussion), more than the rousing, foot-tapping music
of Mr. Coleman. It was the whole package - far greater, as they
say, than the sum its parts.
So Sunday, thanks to Mr. Speakes & Co., was more than
brunch, flowers and menus. It was, for me, a day of reflection -
a day of change - a day of rebirth as it were. It is spring. The
daffodils are bursting with joy, the birds in the little pocket
parks here in the East Village are building nests and singing songs
of love. Children seemed to be everywhere - the area yuppies pushing
their expensive strollers, a covey of Mexican kids following Mom
and Dad down the street, the little guy proudly helping his waitress
mom by pouring the water for the customers at the outdoor cafe.
It was like I was seeing things for the first time - all over again.
Could it be that I am being given a chance and a challenge to "start
over?" Look out world, here I come!

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.svhamstra.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information
- and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference
to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
If you don't have a press release, just click here:
http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use
for the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press
release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links
(with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.)
Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one
of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and
lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them!
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please
keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about
their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show
is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also
posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places
where the show information can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
Where has the morning gone? I has so much more to tell you about.
But it is tome to send this off and get back to business. I sincerely
hope that many of you will make it to the party on July 6th - it will
be like a gathering of old friends and I simply can't wait. Thank
you to the five folks who stepped forwards and signed on as sponsors
for the event - without their help it would be a formidable task indeed.
(There is one sponsor slot left if anyone is interested.) And we have
already taken orders for 14 tickets (current members are given a chance
to order tickets before they go on sale May 1st) so now we only have
86 more seats to fill!
Tonight I will be at a special party 7:00 pm at GOTHAM
COMEDY CLUB (208 West 23rd Street, NYC - 212-367-9000 - http://www.gothamcomedyclub.com/
) and then it is back to cabaret the rest of the week. Stay tuned.
And that is just about the way it was.
