IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE

SIDEBAR AD SALE IN MAY & JUNE - 1 WEEK FREE WITH 3 PAID
You can advertise your show, your CD, your website or even yourself with a home-page side-bar ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website for less than $19 per week - and your ad will be seen by as many as 6000 viewers each day (based on our latest readership statistics). In fact the square 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch ad is the perfect size to show off your CD! Cost is just $25 per week for the first three weeks, and the 4th week is free. There are a few rules, and there is a limit as well. Only 5 home-page side-bar ads can run each week (2 are already taken for the next few weeks) and ads must be paid for in advance via PayPal. Of course they must relate to cabaret, and I reserve the right to reject any ad for any reason. The ad will appear only on the opening page of the website - at the top of the right hand column. They will be displayed top-to-bottom in the order paid for (do not send payment until you receive a PayPal invoice - this will avoid my having to make a refund if all slots are already sold out.

HERE & THERE
I was having a problem this morning finishing off this issue. I got all the "new" news items I needed (I try for at least 10 each issue, and updated all the "regular news" items (shows that are presented weekly or semi-weekly and feature guest performers) and started to collect my thoughts for this HERE & THERE section. I suppose I should write this part of the issue first and be done with it, but I never am really able to gather (and solidify) all my thoughts until about 11:00 am or so.

John McMahon, who seems to "google" cabaret a lot, sent me a link to an amazing article about cabaret he discovered on the Variety.com website (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117963687.html?categoryid=2551&cs=1 ). What wonderful food for thought. It is nice to see an item like this where the writer has no axe to grind, no hidden agenda, no wish to skewer but just clear and crisp reporting and a positive attitude towards the art and artists of cabaret. I hope you all take the time to read it.

Since last Saturday afternoon I have been undergoing a complete "self study" - there's an old insult joke that goes "someday you will find yourself, and boy will you be disappointed!" Well, I can't say that I am disappointed, but I am a bit perturbed. My life over the past few weeks has really undergone some great changes - surprising and unexpected changes. And now I feel that this is just a beginning - that many more changes are in the works - and I want to be in control of them.

This has led me to do a lot of "off-line" writing - honest writing about the things I see and feel in this world of cabaret. My mother once told me many years ago that there comes a time in life when you can begin to be honest in expressing what you think and feel. I don't know if I will ever actually "publish" these articles, but simply writing them has helped me focus on my own life and my own situation, with the goal of making some more real and positive changes in my self, my attitudes and the way I enter the future.

I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible will attend the 17th Birthday Party of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on July 6th. This just might be the last time we have such an affair, so try not to miss it. It will be a little different than the last two parties (15 YEARS OF HUGS & STUFF at THE ENCORE in 2005 and our SWEET 16 PARTY at DON'T TELL MAMA in 2006). There will not be a "pre-party" with open mic as before which was open to the public. Instead we will open the doors at 6:15 or 6:30 pm to give folks plenty of time to schmooze around before the show starts. And you won't be "chased out of the room" when the show ends either. Lennie Watts and the Chris & Steve Mazzilli have been totally helpful in making sure that it will truly be a festive and memorable occasion. And the fact that we have quickly booked six sponsors for the event means our basic costs are covered so we really can't lose money on the event (yes, we once actually lost money on a HOTLINE event that was supposed to raise money, but that's a whole different story).

Already about 20 performers have written in offering to be part of the show. I am certainly seriously considering each offer, but please keep in mind that there are only so many performers that can take part in a 90 minute event. I have to make my choices carefully in order to present the best possible show - drawing from some of the biggest and best names in cabaret as well as including some newcomers to the NYC cabaret scene who I find exciting and want to share their talents with the attendees. There are a few other rules (not set in stone), including an attempt to include performers who have not appeared in either of the two previous "birthday shows." So if you have offered to perform and I haven't chosen you, please understand that in no way should you assume that I feel you are not "good enough" but instead that I simply cannot include everyone who is good enough.

By the way, while we have been announcing that tickets go on sale to the general public via the website on May 1st (current members were given an advance time to purchase tickets), in truth non-members can start ordering tickets today. Just go to the website and click on the line that says CABARET HOTLINE'S 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY TICKETS ON SALE NOW! Then follow the link to the ticket order form - it should be pretty clear as to what to do. Then sit back and wait for your conformation - of the 100 seats available 16 are already sold, and I don't want you to send in a PayPal payment or a check unless I actually have a seat for you. Please wait for the special PayPal Confirmation - then send in your payment. Orders are limited to 4 per person, and remember that you get a special price break if you join for 2007-2008 (membership valid through July 5, 2008 - 14 months for the price of 12) at the same time you purchase your ticket - a full $15 savings!

In this connection, I have a special recommendation for you, If your funds are limited, and you must choose, please skip my birthday show and instead purchase a ticket to the 2007 MAC AWARDS show at BB KING'S BLUES CLUB (237 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-997-4144 - http://www.bbkingsblues.com/ ) to be held on Tuesday, May 1st. I have no hidden agenda here - I am just straight out urging you to attend the show because I openly and without hesitation say that you will truly be supporting the art and the artists of cabaret in NYC by attending this show this year. Nothing hidden about this - you all know by now how I feel about those who have been doing their best to destroy cabaret in this town by badmouthing MAC.

This year a record number of performers signed up to appear on the preliminary ballot, and the top names on that ballot are currently in the running for this year's awards. A MAC AWARD is important to these performers - and it should be important to anyone who is serious about supporting and promoting cabaret in NYC. This isn't about supporting a dozen or so folks who happen to have been elected by the membership to run MAC - it is about the performers, the nominees, the people who really count in this business. A MAC award is important to them, and your being there to show your support of their performances in 2006 is important to them too.

There are about 600 seats to fill - it has been quite a while since 600 people attended a MAC AWARDS show, but if there was a time when a full house would really be special, it is this year. With all the nay sayers and grudge holders running around it won't be an easy thing to accomplish, but it is worth a good old cabaret try.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and recommend not one, but four cabaret shows that I have not seen and have so little information about I very nearly left this item out of this issue. But I have heard the performer several times in several different shows, and at each one of them it was stunned and thrilled beyond belief. Her name is Tanya Moberly and (I've said this often): There is hardly anyone else on the NYC cabaret scene that can capture the essence of a song as well as Tanya, and every show she presents does not fail to touch my inner soul. Ms. Moberly's clear, crisp vocals and total immersion in the feelings of each song makes every show a near-spiritual experience. Ms. Moberly will be performing 4 different shows, one each Friday night in May at 7:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ). I literally cannot wait - listen to the titles: May 4th, Tanya Moberly Sings Arlen, etc.; May 11th, Tanya Moberly Sings Jonatha Brooke; May 18th, Tanya Moberly Sings Beck, etc.; May 25th, Tanya Moberly Sings Ani Di Franco! With Scott Ethier at the piano and special guest, Caroline Saladino the series is directed by Michael Schiralli. There is an $18 cover and a 2-drink minimum.

I saw a great show last night - Barry Lloyd's tribute to Murray Grand at 9:30 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM. Barry came all the way in from San Francisco to present this one-night only show, and was rewarded with an audience representative of the cream of NY cabaret - Steve Ross, Julie Wilson, Trudi Mann, John Wallowitch, Joyce Breach, Joe Regan Jr., Miles Phillips, Shaynee Rainbolt - plus a few "out-of-town" cabaret icons like Charles Cochran, Terese Genecco and Ruth Hastings (and I am sure more names which I forgot to jot down). But audience aside, what a thrilling show! And it was fun - cabaret should be fun! And I will say this, the late Mr. Grand could not have found a better person on the planet to deliver his songs in a "saloon singer" style show than Mr. Lloyd. Barry's comic timing, his special spin to the lyrics, his delicious arrangements (for many of the songs there was no sheet music available, so Barry had to reconstruct the music and lyrics from recordings) were amazing. This show cries out for a repeat performance (or two) in NY. For those of us in the room who remember the days when restaurants and bars all over town had singing pianists, it was a special treat. The ghosts of Danny Apolinar, Charles deForest, and Mr. Grand himself were surely rejoicing in that room last night - as we were all rejoicing at such a great hour of entertainment.

WHAT'S ON MY iPOD?
For several weeks one song has been in the number one position on my little iPod Shuffle - D.C. Anderson's "I Am Still." I add CDs on an almost daily basis - new ones right after they arrive in the mail, and oldies from my collection of about 400 CDs. For instance, right now I have an "oldie-but-goodie" also on board. It is Carolyn Montgomery's REVEILLE CD. I don't know if it is still available - it is from 2004 and I can't find it at CD BABY, on iTunes or even on Carolyn's website. But it remains one of my favorites and one of a handful of cabaret CDs that are nearly perfect in sound, song choice, style and performance. I'll just have to walk over to CAFE FORANT (449 West 51st Street, NYC - 212-247-7200) to see if they are on sale there!

Oops - it is 1:00 pm and I have gone way overtime - probably due to the fact that I had written three or four paragraphs of "ranting" that I decided to delete. I will wait until after Tuesday to "let loose" some of my thoughts and feelings. Meantime, all you true cabaret lovers out there in the NYC area, I'll see you at the MAC awards.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.

By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website).
