TODAY'S FEATURE STORY
MAC AWARDS TO HONOR GOODMAN, MASON, RUDETSKY & WALLMAN
The 21st Annual MAC AWARDS SHOW, presented by MAC (Manhattan Association
of Cabarets) on Tuesday, May 1st at 7:30 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm)
at BB KING'S BLUES CLUB (237 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-997-4144
- http://www.bbkingsblues.com/
) will honor several NYC cabaret and theater icons, including Dody
Goodman, Karen Mason, Seth Rudetsky and Jan Wallman. Also honored
will be Lincoln Center's AMERICAN SONGBOOK series. Directed by Phillip
Geoffrey Bond, the show will feature appearances and/or performances
by such luminaries as John Bucchino, Charles Busch, Jamie deRoy, Melissa
Errico, David Friedman, Julie Gold, Carol Hall, Henry Kreiger, Leslie
Kritzer, Sidney Myer, Sally Mayes, Mark Nadler, Lee Roy Reams, Rex
Reed, Joan Rivers, Stephen Schwartz, KT Sullivan, Alysha Umphress,
John Wallowitch and David Zippel. Many additional surprise performers
and presented are bound to appear.
This show marks the return to the cabaret-style venue
where the MAC Award shows began (at then now closed VILLAGE GATE),
and celebrates cabaret, jazz and comedy performers and performances
by MAC members in MAC member clubs. MAC was founded in 1983 as an
organization of business people in the cabaret industry, comprising
club owners, booking agents, managers, journalists and publicists.
Its original intent was to heighten the public's awareness of cabaret
as an art form and to unify and empower the various cabarets around
NYC. MACs purpose was primarily about improving the climate in
which the business of owning and running those clubs was conducted
and, when necessary, to serve as an advocate for those in the cabaret
business.
As word of MACs existence spread, performers showed
interest in joining, seeing it as an opportunity to be both represented
and to network with their fellow artists. In addition, people who
love the live performing arts and have a passionate interest in
seeing them continue and thrive also joined, as did more clubs around
the city and beyondæfrom as far away as California.
The MAC Award is given to celebrate excellence in
a particular category achieved during a calendar year. It has increased
in stature as the organization has evolved. Because there are so
few opportunities to acknowledge the thousands of artists who make
up live performance nightlife in NYC, the MAC Awards are important
to the entertainment community. The annual Awards Show provides
a forum in which to shine a public spotlight on up and coming, locally
established and nationally recognized cabaret, comedy and jazz performers,
as well as behind the lights professionals.
Tickets for the MAC Awards show are available at the
BB KING'S Box Office, with prices ranging from $40 to $125. There
is a 2-drink minimum, and a full dinner menu is available.

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
SIDEBAR AD SALE IN MAY & JUNE = 4-4-3
You can advertise your show, your CD, your website or even yourself
with a home-page side-bar ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
for less than $19 per week - and your ad will be seen by as many as
6000 viewers each day (based on our latest readership statistics).
In fact the square 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch ad is the perfect size to show
off your CD! Cost is $25 per week for the first three weeks, and the
4th week is free. There are a few rules, and there is a limit as well.
Only 5 home-page side-bar ads can run each week (2 are already taken
for the next few weeks) and ads must be paid for in advance via PayPal.
Of course they must relate to cabaret, and I reserve the right to
reject any ad for any reason. The ad will appear only on the opening
page of the website - at the top of the right hand column. They will
be displayed top-to-bottom in the order paid for (do not send payment
until you receive a PayPal invoice - this will avoid my having to
make a refund if all slots are already sold out.
To read details, specs and see sample side-bar ads,

E-MAIL ADDRESS UPDATE FOR CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
Please Update Your Address Book: Since my phone and DSL line have
now been disconnected at my old address, and I do not have new phone
service installed yet at my new address, my Verizon e-mail address
(stuhamstra@verizon.net) has been discontinued as well. And since
they were linked, if you have my lesser-known Yahoo e-mail address
(stuhamstra@yahoo.com), that has been discontinued as well. E-mails
sent to these addresses will bounce back to you. Please use only the
stuhamstra@svhamstra address for the time being until I can reactivate
the yahoo account. You can also reach me at stuhamstra@mac.com or
stuhamstra@cabarethotlineonline.com .
It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) until
I get my new phone line connected at the new apartment - I need
Verizon to send an installer to do this and that takes a bit of
funding - for the next few weeks or so you can only reach me by
e-mail. I have a cell phone, but that costs me 18 cents a minute
both incoming and outgoing, so I only use it in emergencies or to
make last minute reservations, etc.
Bob Egan sent along some great news yesterday: ODETTE'S in New Hope,
PA, will reopen. Estimated reopening is late 2009 or early 2010. The
website for the club (http://www.thenewodettes.com/
) isn't quite working yet, but you may want to check it from time
to time - it should be up an running by summer.
Tickets for the 17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW FOR CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at THE
METROPOLITAN ROOM on July 6th only went on sale a few days ago, but
already nearly 25% of the seats have been sold! I have booked some
great performers for this year's show - and now I am waiting to see
how the MAC Awards turn out before I sign up more. So far Lennie Watts,
Alice Frazier, Jay Rogers, Francesca Amari, Bruce Clough and Michael
Brill have accepted my invitation to perform - as usual we will be
presenting some newcomers along with some top names in our birthday
show.
I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible will
attend the party. This just might be the last time we have such
an affair, so try not to miss it. Showtime is 7:00 pm but we will
try to open the doors at 6:00 or 6:15 pm to give folks plenty of
time to schmooze around before the show starts. And you won't be
"chased out of the room" when the show ends either. Lennie Watts
and the Chris & Steve Mazzilli have been totally helpful in making
sure that it will truly be a festive and memorable occasion.
To order your tickets just go to the website and click
on the line that says CABARET HOTLINE'S 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY TICKETS
ON SALE NOW! Then follow the link to the ticket order form - it
should be pretty clear as to what to do. Then sit back and wait
for a PayPal invoice/conformation - of the 100 seats available 24
are already sold, and I don't want you to send in a PayPal payment
or a check unless I actually have a seat for you. Then send in your
payment - your reservation is not considered valid until your payment
is received. Orders are limited to 4 per person, and remember that
you get a special price break if you join for 2007-2008 (membership
valid through July 5, 2008 - 14 months for the price of 12) at the
same time you purchase your ticket - a full $15 savings!
I continue to do a combination of "self-examination" and off-line
writing, and as soon as the MACs are out of the way, I plan to make
some changes in both my personal life and what I write about in the
website/newsletter. I hope to bring you a lot more information about
the hidden side of cabaret - honest and balanced reporting with "no
holds barred." I plan to delve into the secrets behind, as well as
the history of, who and why things in this wonderful art form have
gotten bent and twisted by a few folks seeking their own personal
power rather than the good of the community (while pretending to be
the "saviors" of cabaret). Hopefully by shining a light on the nitty-gritty
we can rid cabaret from some of the issues that only serve to create
disunity in the community. Why are some performers overlooked by booking
managers, reviewers, producers and award committees? Why are some
performers "blacklisted" because of things they said or wrote - or
didn't say or write? Stay tuned.
I want to repeat this once more (and I only have this one last chance
to repeat it): If your funds are limited, and you must choose, please
skip my 17th birthday show and instead purchase a ticket to the 2007
MAC AWARDS show at BB KING'S BLUES CLUB (237 West 42nd Street, NYC
- 212-997-4144 - http://www.bbkingsblues.com/
) to be held tomorrow night, Tuesday, May 1st. I have no hidden agenda
here - I am simply urging you to attend the MAC show because I openly
and without hesitation say that you will truly be supporting the art
and the artists of cabaret in NYC by going this year. You all know
by now how I feel about those who have been doing their best to destroy
cabaret in this town by badmouthing MAC. Now is your chance to support
and do your part to prove the unity of the cabaret community.
A record number of performers signed up this year
to appear on the preliminary ballot, and the top names on that ballot
are currently in the running for this year's awards. A MAC AWARD
is important to these performers - and it should be important to
anyone who is serious about supporting and promoting cabaret in
NYC. This isn't about supporting a dozen or so folks who happen
to have been elected by the membership to run MAC - it is about
supporting hundreds of performers and the 60 or so nominees. Cabaret
performers are the people who really count in this business. A MAC
award is important to them, and your being there tomorrow night
to show your support of their performances in 2006 is important
to them, too.
And the best part, of course is the acceptance speeches!
You will get a chance to hear the winners speak from the heart as
they accept their awards. A MAC win requires the help of a lot of
folks who serve behind the scenes, and this is the performer's chance
to publicly thank them.
There are about 600 seats to fill - it has been quite
a while since 600 people attended a MAC AWARDS show, but if there
was a time when a full house would really be special, it is this
year. With all the nay sayers and grudge holders running around
it won't be an easy thing to accomplish, but it is worth a good
old cabaret try. Tickets are priced as low as $40 - call BB KING'S
at 212-997-4144 and reserve your ticket right now! Tome to put an
end to all this anti-MAC nonsense!
LOOKING FOR BIRTHDAY PROGRAM BOOKLET ADVERTISERS
If you cannot attend the July 6th event you might want to run an ad
in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY program book (1/6
page for $25 - SPACE IS LIMITED). Or perhaps you have an upcoming
event after July 6th that you wish to promote, or want to congratulate
our JEFF MATSON award winners, Collette Black and Joe Regan Jr., or
simply want to congratulate our newsletter/website for 17 years of
serving the cabaret community. A program ad may be just the thing
for you! Not only will the booklet be presented to the 100+ folks
attending the show, but a pdf of the booklet will be available for
download on the website after the 6th of July. For more information
and to reserve your ad slot, CLICK HERE: http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml
WHAT'S ON MY iPOD?
D.C. Anderson's song "I Am Still" from his CD of the same name, continues
as #1 track on my tiny iPod Shuffle - I simply can't get enough of
this haunting song. I add CDs to the gadget on an almost daily basis
- new ones right after they arrive in the mail, and oldies from my
collection of about 400 CDs. For instance, right now I have singer/songwriter
Evan Toth's Rock CD "Welcome Back to Hell" and really have folks on
the subway and bus a bit confused by the "sound spill" from my earphones
- what is this 67-year-old guy listening to rock for? But many of
the songs are about Evan's native New Jersey (I am a Jersey native
as well) and his Elton John/Bruce Springsteen style has me captivated.
One song on the CD takes you on a journey from one end of the Garden
State Parkway to the other. Lots of fun and a lot of clever lyrics
as well. By the way, the best part of listening to Evan is that, unlike
so many other male vocalist CDs I have received lately, in no way
does he try to sound like Frank Sinatra - what gives with all these
"Sinatra-sound-alikes" lately? Check it out. I just added Terese Genecco's
spanking new "Drunk With Love" CD to my little iPod pal, and can't
wait to give it a spin.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section
of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release
of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information
- and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference
to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
If you don't have a press release, just click here:
http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use
for the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press
release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links
(with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.)
Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one
of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and
lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them!
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please
keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about
their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show
is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also
posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places
where the show information can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
Pass the word - starting with the next issue CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
moves into a new direction! (see HERE & THERE above). Let me have
your thoughts, comments and ideas. I want to make these newsletters
and the website bigger, better and more exciting. You will be surprised
- and hopefully excited about the things to come. The gloves are off.
Urge others to sign up for a free subscription and to check the website
often. Names will be named, secrets will be revealed. It's going to
be a bumpy ride, so hang on.
And that is just about the way it was.
