TODAY'S FEATURE STORY
JEFF MATSON AWARD RECIPIENTS NAMED FOR 2007
The JEFF MATSON AWARD was created to honor the memory of songwriter/writer/director/producer/graphic
designer Jeff Matson, who passed away suddenly on April 2, 2005 from
a rare blood disorder. His talents were many, but his greatest talent
was that of inspiring and encouraging other performers towards perfection
in their craft. In 2005 the first award was presented to D.C. Anderson,
and last year's recipients were Trudi Mann and Hector Coris.
This year, at the 17th BIRTHDAY OF CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE, to be held on July 6th at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West
22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) we will be presenting the 2007 JEFF MATSON AWARD to two very worthy
recipients. The two chosen this year are truly deserving of this
recognition. Each of them have been an inspiration, a resource and
a good friend to cabaret performers. This year's recipients are
Collette Black (booking manager UPSTAIRS at ROSE'S TURN) and Joe
Regan, Jr. (best friend a cabaret performer could have).
In addition, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be announcing
the recipient of our first DOTTIE BURMAN award, to be given to a
deserving cabaret songwriter. More on this to come.
Already confirmed to appear in the show:
Erie PA based vocalist ALICE FRAZIER, who was booked
for last year but had to cancel at the last minute because of a
family emergency.
Vocalist/actor "BBBAD" BRUCE CLOUGH, who hails from
Philadelphia and a really exciting newcomer to NYC cabaret.
LENNIE WATTS, "Mr. NY Cabaret" who books THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM and will lead off the night's entertainment.
FRANCESCA AMARI, who is "Miss Cabaret" of Western
Michigan - and lives in Grand Rapids, my old college town! She is
flying out just to be in the show!
JAY ROGERS, award-winning musical comedy great, one
of the stars of George Winter's fabulous "Monday in the Dark With
George" revue, "Whoop-de-doo" "When Pigs Fly" and Keith Thompson's
"Kooky Tunes."
MICHAEL BRILL, amazing and wild stand-up comedy favorite
and 2007 MAC AWARD nominee and host of DON'T TELL MAMA'S Gay & Lesbian
Comedy Fest shows.
(AS WITH ALL LIVE ENTERTAINMENT EVENTS PERFORMERS
SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

HERE & THERE
First off, I think I will be getting my yahoo.com address back. Not
via Verizon, but direct from YAHOO. If you are using an AOL account
to receive this e-mail, you will be probably getting this issue either
from my MAC.com account or the reactivated YAHOO.com account (check
the return address).
VERIZON also promised me a coupon worth $50 if I sign up with them
for phone service at my new home. I am waiting for the coupon and
then I will ask for an estimate since they have to establish a second
line into the apartment, and this entails a visit by a technician.
Stay tuned. Meantime, I am reachable by e-mail.
On Monday I mentioned that I am in the midst of a period of "self-examination"
and have been doing a lot of off-line writing. Now that the MAC Awards
are out of the way, and before I get too involved with the details
of the 17th BIRTHDAY event, I plan to make some changes in both my
personal life and even some of the things I write about in the website/newsletter.
In the coming weeks I hope to bring you a lot more information about
the hidden side of cabaret answering some of the questions no one
dares to ask, and no one dares to answer.
My goal is honest and balanced reporting with "no
holds barred." I plan to delve into the secrets behind, as well
as the history of, who and why things in this wonderful art form
have gotten bent and twisted by a few folks seeking their own personal
power rather than the good of the community (while pretending to
be the "saviors" of cabaret). I am a firm believer that fear and
anger have their root in ignorance. Hopefully by shining a light
on the inner workings of cabaret we can get rid of some of the issues
that only serve to create disunity in the community.
Why are some performers overlooked by booking managers,
reviewers, producers and award committees? Why are some performers
"blacklisted" because of things they said or wrote - or didn't say
or write? I will try to answer some of these questions - and more.
If your have something on your mind along these lines - a story,
a question, a comment, an experience - write me an e-mail. I will
certainly treat your communication with strictest confidence (unless
you prefer otherwise). I have been around this business far longer
than the 17 years that CABARET HOTLINE has been in existence and
I have been keeping a lot of things bottled up. Now I think it is
time to clear the air.
If you had told me a year or so ago that I would be experiencing the
wonderful things that I have experienced over the past three or four
weeks I would have had you committed somewhere - or at least sent
for observation! A year or so ago, on MAC AWARD night I was in a cabaret
room with about 70 other cabaret friends and fans laughing (no screaming)
at the antics of super-woman comic Collette Hawley and her "Shushy
Bush" show while the MAC show was going on somewhere downtown fittingly
near "ground zero." It wasn't a boycott, and there was no conspiracy.
It just happened that a lot of folks were not happy with the ill-advised
direction MAC had taken in regards to the MAC AWARD voting system,
and on their own decided to skip the event. There were even a few
MAC nominees at the Hawley show!
MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) apparently
got the message - and with the election of new board members in
the fall, (voted on by the full membership - something the members
had fought for and won the year before) and the election of new
MAC President Ricky Ritzel, changes started to be made. The most
important change that I noticed immediately was the fact that the
"us vs. them" mentality on the part of the Board became a thing
of the past. Instead, the attitude became "lets listen, lets ask
questions, lets find out what the membership and cabaret performers
and fans expect of MAC." They asked, we answered, they listened
and they began to make changes.
OK, I may feel personally that some more changes still
need to be made, and I will be writing about that as time goes by,
but I know that MAC will never be exactly what I want it to be -
and will never be exactly what any other individual wants it to
be either. But the new willingness to carry out change - and to
listen to the advice and/or complaints of the members, is what makes
MAC so much better than before. Gone is the attitude that a former
MAC board president expressed, in affect saying: "You elected us
- we make the decisions - if you don't like our decisions, shut
up and move on."
But changes began to be made, and cabaret performers
and fans began to notice the changes and started rejoining MAC,
started volunteering for committees, started attending MAC networking
events and seminars. Except for a few diehards, the anger frustration
and disappointments of the past melted away and a spirit of cooperation
began to develop as folks realized that MAC could once again become
a leader - a moving force - a true organization to promote this
art form we love so much.
Meantime another bit of drama was playing out downtown
at BACK STAGE magazine. Cost cutting was combined with editorial
redirection and focus, and the beloved BISTRO BITS column covering
cabaret was being squeezed to an ever smaller size and appeared
less and less frequently. There is even an indication, not confirmed,
that there has been a cut back in the number of reviewers covering
cabaret - to just one. The BACK STAGE BISTRO AWARDS - at one time
a glorious gala celebrating the start of "Cabaret Month" had to
downsize a few years ago to an invitation-only event in a small
venue.
BACK STAGE Magazine Editor-at-Large Sherry Eaker,
who's father, the late Ira Eaker actually was one of the founders
of BACK STAGE magazine and the original writer of the cabaret-themed
BITRO BITS column, decided to bring back the glamour and the glitz
of the BISTRO AWARDS and, gambling her time and her own finances,
scheduled a revival of sorts at GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB (208 West 23rd
Street, NYC - 212-367-9000 - http://www.gothamcomedyclub.com/
) on Monday April 23rd - a scant two weeks ago. The resulting support
shown by the reunified cabaret community was gloriously beyond all
expectations - all 300 or so seats were sold out a week before the
show, and it turned out to be one of the most exciting BACK STAGE
BISTRO AWARD nights in the history of the event! The cabaret community
was back and kicking up their heels, celebrating the act of celebrating!
Tuesday night, when I spoke to Sherry at the MAC AWARDS
show, she mentioned that the "powers that be" at BACK STAGE MAGAZINE
took note as well - and promised that definitely there would be
a BACK STAGE BISTRO AWARD GALA next year with full support from
the magazine. Fabulous news! By the way, the night of the event,
the owners of GOTHAM - Steve and Chris Mazzilli (who also own the
METROPOLITAN ROOM) were impressed as well, and Chris told me that
he definitely wanted his club to be the site of the "BISTROS" again
next year!
And then came Tuesday night - the 2007 MAC AWARDS
SHOW at BB KING'S BLUES CLUB (237 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-997-4144
- http://www.bbkingsblues.com/
). When I talked to a few members of the MAC board at a special
"get to know the comics" event sponsored by MAC at GOTHAM on Monday,
April 23rd, they said that ticket sales were "brisk" and they told
me that they would really be pleased if they could sell 350-400
seats to the show. Who knew? By Friday the 27th all the expensive
seats were sold out, and only a 50 or so $40 seats remained available
- and they were selling fast. By showtime every seat was sold -
nearly 600! I got there just before the show was scheduled to start
at 7:30 pm and the level of excitement, celebration, love and joy
was "off the Richter scale!"
And what brought all these cabaret fans and performers
together? It wasn't a host of Broadway stars (many who have probably
never been in a cabaret room, on stage or off), it wasn't a huge
ad campaign. It was the cabaret community bonding together like
the good old days! We were not like kids playing hooky this year
- we were like kids being let out of school! No longer forced into
taking sides on issues long dead and forgotten, we could celebrate
as a united and unified group, celebrate the art and artists of
cabaret! It took nine months from the day the turnaround began last
August, and Tuesday night, May 1st MAC was reborn!
Oh what a fantastic show! And the speeches! In a few
instances they went longer than required, but all of them were heartfelt
and each of them gave the show that special "cabaret" down-with-the-fourth-wall
feel. I am so happy that not a single performer was "played off
the stage" because they talked too much. Phil Bond did what the
best of directors do - he brought out the best in every number,
using the best talent in town (cabaret performers) to celebrate
us on and simply let things happen. Ray Fellman as musical director
was superb (does this guy ever not smile?).
And the choice of BB KINGS was inspired! Sure the
bar area was a little noisy at times, but that's what bar areas
are for. The wait staff was right on the ball (in my part of the
room at least) and our waiter stopped by at least a half-dozen times
to make sure we were taken care of (no, I did not have a half-dozen
drinks, that's a myth). By the end of the show, who wanted to go
home? There were parties to go to - like the old days!
I must especially point out the wonderful remarks
by Joan Rivers, who made the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement
Award to a very well deserving (and far too long overlooked) Jan
Wallman. One does not normally think of Joan Rivers as being a "cabaret
person" but she had her start in cabaret at the original DUPLEX
(now ROSE'S TURN) and Jan gave Joan her first big break - more than
once. Speaking without a script, Ms. Rivers mentioned her tremendous
support and love of art and venues of cabaret. It was truly inspiring.
There is an old saying (which I learned back when
I lived in Michigan in another lifetime, where people still chop
down trees for a living) that when you cut down a huge tree, and
it starts to fall in a certain direction, there is no way you can
change that direction - it will land where it has chosen to land.
MAC is on its way - it has chosen a new direction. It has a way
to go, but it is on the move - in the right direction. And there
is no stopping it now!
More things are coming. Another MAC Seminar is scheduled
for Tuesday May 22nd from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at THE TRIAD (158 West
72nd Street, NYC - 212-362-2511 - http://www.Triadnyc.com/
) - "Cabaret as Theater / Theater as Cabaret." Hosted by Adam Feldman
(Time Out NY) and Sherry Eaker (BACK STAGE). Details below.
And save the date - Members and non-members of MAC
are invited to the MAC General Membership Meeting on Wednesday,
June 20th at THE BROADWAY COMEDY CLUB (318 West 53rd Street, NYC
- 212-757-2323) - exact time and details to be announced. Open to
the public. I know that MAC has a lot of ideas and plans for the
future that will be revealed, and I know that this time around the
MAC Board will be there to listen, to discuss and to explain.
There is a lot of work - a lot of changes - still
to be done. And MAC needs more members - and more volunteers. MAC
is on a roll, and the MAC Board - especially President Ricky Ritzel,
who was the catalyst who got the ball rolling - is to be commended,
congratulated and supported by the cabaret community. And if you
haven't joined MAC yet, now is a good time - the new membership
cards are now available, and come this fall you will be able to
cast your vote to show your support of this new direction.
The list of this year's winners can be found on the
website.
CODA: In the spirit of my own personal period of deja vu, I walked
(in the rain that started during the MAC AWARDS SHOW) a few blocks
north from BB KING'S to DON'T TELL MAMA after the show, and spent
an hour enjoying piano bar - with one of the singing waiters being
our own beloved Colette Hawley! And she sang for us a song from the
show of the year before, about the ex-governor of New Jersey, the
(Rev.?) McGreevey, who has been in the news lately. The song presents
Colette's own special twists on several NJ cities including Secaucus
and Nutley (you do the math).
NOTE TO SELF: Take an umbrella along even when you
don't expect it to rain. I am a firm believer that you catch a cold
from a germ or a virus, not from rain, yet I awoke this morning
with a very sore throat. Go figure.
Just a little warning to folks contemplating attending the 17th BIRTHDAY

NOT CALL THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - DO NOT SEND A CHECK UNTIL YOU GET

WHAT'S ON MY iPOD?
Well, last issue I mentioned that I had just loaded Terese Genecco's
"Drunk With Love" CD on my mini-iPod Shuffle, and am I glad I did.
It is probably one of the best "recorded live" cabaret CDs I have
heard in some time. I saw Terese's show twice (maybe it was three
times) and this CD captures the excitement and the fun of the BACK
STAGE BISTRO AWARD winning production. I actually listened to it twice
(I was doing my laundry and listening at the same time). One more
thing: undistracted by all the visual action of the live show experience,
the purity and beauty of Terese's vocals come through on the recording.
The second CD on the tiny gadget was John De Marco's new CD "Pure
and Simple." John won the MAC Award this year for best MALE JAZZ VOCALIST
and you only have to listen to the first one or two tracks on the
lush album to realize why. Mostly all ballads, mostly all about love,
the title of the CD may be plain and simple but the John's vocals
are absolutely and elaborately elegant and complex. Delicious!
Time to get some rest - the best cure for a sore throat. I want to
be fully rested for Seth Rudetsky's BROADWAY CHATTERBOX show at 6:00
pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788
- http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/
) tonight. I am so happy that Seth's wonderful show - and wonderful
work (proceeds from the CHATTERBOX SHOWS go totally to BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY
FIGHTS AIDS (http://www.bcefa.org/
) was recognized and honored on Tuesday night at the MAC AWARDS show
with a BOARD OF DIRECTORS AWARD. For over 7 years Seth has been conducting
these 1-hour interviews and I have tried to attend every one I possible
can - sore throat and all.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section
of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release
of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information
- and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference
to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website
or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together
the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your
press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded
photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your
post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to
"click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your
press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format
I write these issues in and use for the website).

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send
in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly
showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis
for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing.

be sure that these discounts will be honored.
Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee
that the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact
the parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and
remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.
IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
Your membership donations support this publication and the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website. If you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and
would like to support us, why not join as a supporting member? Your
donation is most important to me, not just to pay for my food, cable,
phone, DSL and rent, etc., but also as a confirmation of your appreciation.
Can you please help?
For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE, just click on the JOIN HERE button on the website. You can
even make your membership donation by credit card, using PayPal.
If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send
a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.
I realize that there is probably far more information here than you
might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that
for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the
few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances.
To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact
that every issue published is also posted on my website means another
place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google,
etc.) alike. Your membership donations make this all possible.
It is "nap time" - I can't believe that I have been sitting here at
this computer since 6:30 am! But I had a lot to say - and a lot more
to say if I had more time. I know that in a few minutes, just after
I send this issue out, I will remember several things I forgot to
say which will now have to wait until Monday's issue. And after my
nap, when I add all the html code to put this newsletter on the website
I will find a number of typos, incomplete sentences and poorly worded
phrases. And later today someone will send me a new item of such great
importance I will be angry with myself for not waiting a little longer
to e-mail the issue. Such is the curse of living in "real time."
And that is just about the way it was.
