IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE

SIDEBAR AD SALE IN MAY & JUNE = 4-4-3
You can advertise your show, your CD, your website or even yourself with a home-page side-bar ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website for less than $19 per week - and your ad will be seen by as many as 6000 viewers each day (based on our latest readership statistics). In fact the square 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch ad is the perfect size to show off your CD! Cost is $25 per week for the first three weeks, and the 4th week is free. There are a few rules, and there is a limit as well. Only 5 home-page side-bar ads can run each week (2 are already taken for the next few weeks) and ads must be paid for in advance via PayPal. Of course they must relate to cabaret, and I reserve the right to reject any ad for any reason. The ad will appear only on the opening page of the website - at the top of the right hand column. They will be displayed top-to-bottom in the order paid for (do not send payment until you receive a PayPal invoice - this will avoid my having to make a refund if all slots are already sold out.

To read details, specs and see sample side-bar ads, go to http://svhamstra.com/BannerAdSale2007.shtml

HERE & THERE
I had big plans for yesterday - unusual for me since it was a Sunday, and I usually take the day off. I was going to take in three show starting at HELEN'S at 4:00 pm, then UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN at 7:00 pm and ending the night at Euan Morton's show THE METROPOLITAN ROOM at 9:30 pm. But shortly before 3:15 pm I had a computer mishap. Not really the computer's fault - it was the DSL modem. It dropped the signal and nothing I could do could get it to work again. I am one of those computer geek-types who does all the standard stuff first to fix things before calling the service 800 number. I guess it is because I am sort of embarrassed when I call and they ask me a simple, everyone should know question like "did you try rebooting the 'whatever'?" So I fiddled, re-booted, disconnected, reconnected, control paneled, ran some tests, the whole nine yards, but still no connection. Armed with enough "yes I tried that" responses, I called VERIZON. Fortunately, they could not give an easy answer (my heart thumped with pride) so we ended up completely resetting the modem, loading a new password, and we were back in business. But by that time it was after 7:00 pm so I only made it to the third event.

Just a note to everyone here in the US - Sunday the 13th is MOTHER'S DAY, and wether or not you have a mother, your Sunday will be impacted if you have any travel plans. Here in NYC - especially if the weather is nice - it will be impossible to get a table at any of the better restaurants (and flowers will be hard to come by as well). And getting around town and/or finding a parking place may be a nightmare. Use public transportation if you can, unless you have mom along (that would be chintzy). Take her to the cabaret! Moms love cabaret.

Tickets for the 17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW FOR CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) on July 6th only went on sale just a little over a week ago, but already nearly half of the 100 available seats have been sold! I have already booked some great performers for this year's show. As usual we will be presenting some newcomers along with some top names in our birthday show. First to be booked were Lennie Watts, Alice Frazier, Jay Rogers, Francesca Amari, Bruce Clough and Michael Brill.

In addition, Sue Matsuki, who has been helping with the planning, will also sing a special number at the show. Newly added to the list (just last night) was Esther Beckman, winner of the 2007 MAC AWARD for Female Debut. And Steven Ray Watkins has agreed to serve this year as musical director.

An important part of the show will be the presentation of the 2007 JEFF MATSON AWARDS. The JEFF MATSON AWARD was created to honor the memory of songwriter/writer/director/producer/graphic designer Jeff Matson, who passed away suddenly on April 2, 2005 from a rare blood disorder. His talents were many, but his greatest talent was that of inspiring and encouraging other performers towards perfection in their craft. In 2005 the first award was presented to D.C. Anderson, and last year's recipients were Trudi Mann and Hector Coris.

This year we will be presenting the 2007 JEFF MATSON AWARD to two very worthy recipients - truly deserving of this recognition. Each has been an inspiration, a resource and a good friend to cabaret performers. This year's recipients are Collette Black (booking manager UPSTAIRS at ROSE'S TURN) and Joe Regan, Jr. (best friend a cabaret performer could have). Joe has even offered to perform at the show!

In addition, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be announcing the recipient of our first DOTTIE BURMAN award, to be given to a deserving cabaret songwriter. More on this to come.

I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible will attend the party. This just might be the last time we have such an affair, so try not to miss it. Showtime is 7:00 pm but we will try to open the doors at 6:00 or 6:15 pm to give folks plenty of time to schmooze around before the show starts. And you won't be "chased out of the room" when the show ends either. Lennie Watts and the Chris & Steve Mazzilli have been totally helpful in making sure that it will truly be a festive and memorable occasion.

Tickets are $35, but if you rejoin as a 2007-2008 Member ticket price drops to $25 - and there is even more: If you join and pay for a ticket and a membership at the same time, the cost is $20 for the ticket and $20 for a SILVER or $75 for a GOLD membership - $40 or $95 COMBO price (saves you $15!) (the club's standard 2-beverage minimum - not included in the ticket price - applies).

If you haven't ordered your tickets yet, just go to the website and click on the line that says CABARET HOTLINE'S 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY TICKETS ON SALE NOW! Then follow the link to the ticket order form - it should be pretty clear as to what to do. Then sit back and wait for a PayPal invoice/conformation - of the 100 seats available and nearly 50% of them already sold, and I don't want you to send in a PayPal payment or a check unless I actually have a seat for you. When you receive the invoice/confirmation, send in your payment - your reservation is not considered valid until your payment is received. Orders are limited to 4 per person.

If you cannot attend the event - or have an upcoming event after July 6th that you wish to promote, or want to congratulate Colette or Joe, you might want to run an ad in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY program book (1/6 page for $25 - SPACE IS LIMITED - 4 PAGES ALREADY SOLD!). For more information and to reserve your ad slot, see http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml

The CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY is sponsored in part by Jenna Esposito (http://www.jennaesposito.com/ ) , Rob Langeder (http://www.roblangeder.com/ ), Suzanne Carrico (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/ ), Julian Yeo (http://www.julianyeo.com/ ), Eric Michael Gillett (http://www.ericmichaelgillett.com/ ) and Matt Leahy (http://www.mattleahy.com/ ).

I got a note from cabaret vocalist/pianist Helen Day, who appeared in "The Vagina Monologues" by Eve Ensler on Saturday, March 31st at the HOUSE OF BLUES (225 Decatur Street, New Orleans, LA - 504-310-4999 - http://www.HOB.com/neworleans/ ), reporting that the sold-out performance made over $4,000 for the Metropolitan Center for Women and Children, New Orleans. The cast met with playwright Eve Ensler at Tulane University and she is planning a giant V-Day celebration next April at the Superdome in New Orleans. Also there will be various productions of the play going on around the city. New Orleans Singer/Songwriter Mike True wrote a special song for the V Monologues and a CD was presented to Ms. Ensler. He also performed it at the House of Blues production. Now Helen is teaming up with New Orleans chanteuse Mary Flynn and forming a new act, Flynn n' Day and they are now planning gigs at various venues in the Big Easy. Will keep you posted.

Coming soon on the website: THE CABARET CHRONICLES - one person's experiences and observations of the past 20-25 years of cabaret. In this "first person" style series (the only way I know how to write) I hope to bring you a lot more information about the hidden side of cabaret - honest and balanced reporting, delving into the secrets behind - as well as the history of - the reasons things in this wonderful art form have sometimes gotten bent and twisted over the years. I will try to cover the major events and personalities who shaped - and at times misshaped - cabaret in NYC. The series will be found on the website with a "teaser" paragraph in the newsletter each time a new chapter is added. If your have something on your mind along these lines - a story, a question, a comment, an experience - send me an e-mail. I will certainly treat your communication with strictest confidence (unless you prefer otherwise). I have been around this business far longer than the 17 years that CABARET HOTLINE has been in existence and I have been keeping a lot of things to myself. Fortunately I have archives of all the CABARET HOTLINE newsletters ever written, going back to 1990 to help me keep my timeline accurate.

I saw a bunch of shows over the past several days, and there are a few I want to highly recommend if you plan any "cabareting" in the next week or so. Be sure to catch Bobby Belfry & Band at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) on Saturday the 12th at 5:00 pm. The lad has really grown in his songwriting skills - most of the songs in this show were written with his musical director Steven Ray Watkins, and in many of them Bobby delightfully expands on a "slice of life" he has experienced or witnessed, with very interesting and entertaining result. His vocals continue to be fantastic and Steven, the band and two backup singers keep the show moving at top pace. A truly entertaining show.

And don't overlook Tanya Moberly this Friday night, May 11th at 7:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ). I caught the "Arlen" show last Friday - and believe me, it was not your usual Arlen show. This gal not only has great vocals and amazing delivery, she also knows how to pick out new and/or obscure tunes and string them along into an amazing show with nary a word of patter. She just leans into the audience as she leans into her material and delivers pure beauty. It is a lesson in theater/cabaret. This was the first of four different shows - a new one each Friday (I have signed on for them all). May 11th, Tanya sings Jonatha Brooke; May 18th, Tanya sings Beck, etc.; May 25th,Tanya sings Ani Di Franco! With Scott Ethier at the piano and special guest, Caroline Saladino. The shows are directed by Michael Schiralli. Not to be missed.

And you should try to catch a very clever lady by the name of Teresa Fischer who is performing her show "Lightening My Load" at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ) on Wednesday the 9th at 7:00 pm. The show in part celebrates Teresa's success on a diet, but that event also triggers her decision to lose a lot of other "extra weight" in her life - delightful, lighthearted and fun.

There are some old standbys that assure a great night on the town: At THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) on Tuesday at 7:00 pm you can see jazz from one of the best - the legendary Annie Ross. A show you will long remember from a lady you will never forget. And in the same space at the same time, but one day later, on Wednesday the 9th, BLEND-O-MATIC (by any other name it is still GASHOLE to me). It stars two (with the talent of 6) of the best, award-winning singer/songwriter/entertainers in the town, and the show is non-stop fun from start to finish. Karen Mack & Michael Holland are legends in cabaret, and their mad medley song combinations are dazzling. Go just once, and I guarantee you will be back again and again. Love them!

Other shows moving into the clubs that I haven't seen yet, but want to call to your attention: Alice Frazier comes to town with a new show, "Broadway Without Boundaries" this week Wednesday May 9th at 7:00 pm at HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/ ). Barb Jungr also arrives from London and brings her internationally acclaimed style to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) on Wednesday the 9th at 9:30 pm and Thursday the 10th at 10:30 pm. You will find this lady irresistible - I became an instant die-hard fan the first time I saw her in a show years ago. Truly one of the finest song interpreters in cabaret anywhere in the world. I am so there on opening night!

Eric Michael Gillett hasn't done a solo cabaret show in NYC in some time, and I can't wait to see him, also at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) on opening night on Thursday May 10th at 8:00 pm (he has a second show on the 17th and that's it!). A true entertainer, this man is genuinely one of the best in the business. The show is called "Hook, Line & Singer" - a revival of a show he did a few years back. A must see!

There are just a few of the exciting and entertaining shows going on in town this week - check out the NYC NEWS page on the website for a host of great cabaret shows to tempt your entertainment palate.

I better quit now - this newsletter has been getting longer and longer today - new stories of special immediate importance have been coming in all morning and I have had to stop writing to reformat them for the newsletter, paste them in, and restart. I had a lot more to say - so I will say it on Thursday. Meantime, have a great day - and don't forget mom.

WHAT'S ON MY iPOD?
D.C. Anderson's son "I Am Still" from his CD of the same name, continues as #1 track on my tiny iPod Shuffle - I simply can't get enough of this haunting song. It is the song that comes up as soon as I put the earplugs in and fire up the little critter. I add CDs to the gadget on an almost daily basis - new ones right after they arrive in the mail, and oldies from my collection of about 400 CDs. Last night on the way to and from Euan Morton's show I was enthralled by two sort of vintage CDs on my little iPod pal. Both came into my CD collection in 2003, and each has been listened to often. First one was Londoner Nathan Martin's "Anywhere With You" and you simply must hear this young man's vocals - such a light touch and so filled with youthful charm. Second was Joanne Tatham's "Making Light" which I chose by accident, but once it started to play I instantly remembered how much I delighted in this recording. I simply had to give it another listen. Nathan's CD is available on iTunes. Joanne's is available on her website (http://www.joannetatham.com/ ).

JACKSON & PALTER LET KIDS' WISHES COME TRUE
The recent performances of New England based Lynne Jackson & Mike Palter children's project, "Wish Upon A Star" in the Boston area were triumphs, not only for the local casts of under-served Hispanic and African American children but for appreciative audiences, astounded parents, educators and community leaders. With future "Wish upon A Star" and "Jazz Is a Rainbow" projects already booked in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and discussions of similar ventures in Germany, France and Africa, Lynne & Mike continue with their efforts to bring great music and wonderful experiences of growth, self-esteem and empowerment to children. Their efforts have been supported by the Mabel Mercer Foundation, the Unitarian Universalist Church, Jamey Aebersold, Joanne Holbrook Patton, the Massachusetts Cultural Council and caring musicians, performers and writers of the world of cabaret, jazz and Broadway. At a time when music has been largely eliminated from our schools and where the psychological consequences of school violence (and world violence) are often overlooked, such projects have become even more crucial and needed. Bravo! If you want information, send me a note and I will pass it along to Lynne and Mike.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them!

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places where the show information can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

Hope you enjoyed this longer-than-lately newsletter today. If you read this far, I assume you did. I'll be back on Thursday with a lot more!

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
