IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE

PELLEGRENE AND LANGEDER ADDED TO PERFORMER LIST FOR BIRTHDAY SHOW
Tickets for the 17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW FOR CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) on July 6th only went on sale just a little over two weeks ago, but already over half of the 100 available seats have been sold! I have already booked some great performers for this year's show. As usual we will be presenting some newcomers along with some top names in our birthday show.

We just added two new performers to the show. Piano-bar specialist David Pellegrene, who can be found 6 nights a week in two piano bar venues, will be at the piano before the start of the show, starting around 6:00 pm, to add a note of festivity to the evening as attendees are being seated. Come early and schmooze a bit. We already had booked 2007 MAC AWARD Female Debut winner Esther Beckman, so we thought it only fitting to add 2007 MAC AWARD Male Debut winner Rob Langeder to the show list. Other performers scheduled to appear are Lennie Watts, Alice Frazier, Jay Rogers, Francesca Amari, Bruce Clough, Michael Brill, and Sue Matsuki (who is helping us with the program planning). Steven Ray Watkins has agreed to serve this year as musical director.

An important part of the show will be the presentation of the 2007 JEFF MATSON AWARDS. The JEFF MATSON AWARD was created to honor the memory of songwriter/writer/director/producer/graphic designer Jeff Matson, who passed away suddenly on April 2, 2005 from a rare blood disorder. His talents were many, but his greatest talent was that of inspiring and encouraging other performers towards perfection in their craft. In 2005 the first award was presented to D.C. Anderson, and last year's recipients were Trudi Mann and Hector Coris.

This year we will be presenting the 2007 JEFF MATSON AWARD to two very worthy recipients - truly deserving of this recognition. Each has been an inspiration, a resource and a good friend to cabaret performers. This year's recipients are Collette Black (booking manager UPSTAIRS at ROSE'S TURN) and Joe Regan, Jr. (best friend a cabaret performer could have). Joe has even offered to perform at the show!

In addition, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be announcing the recipient of our first DOTTIE BURMAN award, to be given to a deserving cabaret songwriter. More on this to come.

I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible will attend the party. This just might be the last time we have such an affair, so try not to miss it. Showtime is 7:00 pm but we will try to open the doors at 6:00 or 6:15 pm to give folks plenty of time to schmooze around before the show starts. And you won't be "chased out of the room" when the show ends either. Lennie Watts and the Chris & Steve Mazzilli have been totally helpful in making sure that it will truly be a festive and memorable occasion.

Tickets are $35, but if you rejoin as a 2007-2008 Member ticket price drops to $25 - and there is even more: If you join and pay for a ticket and a membership at the same time, the cost is $20 for the ticket and $20 for a SILVER or $75 for a GOLD membership - $40 or $95 COMBO price (saves you $15!) (the club's standard 2-beverage minimum - not included in the ticket price - applies).

If you haven't ordered your tickets yet, just go to the website and click on the line that says CABARET HOTLINE'S 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY TICKETS ON SALE NOW! Then follow the link to the ticket order form - it should be pretty clear as to what to do. Then sit back and wait for a PayPal invoice/conformation - of the 100 seats available and OVER 1/2 of them already sold, and I don't want you to send in a PayPal payment or a check unless I actually have a seat for you. When you receive the invoice/confirmation, send in your payment - your reservation is not considered valid until your payment is received. Orders are limited to 4 per person.

If you cannot attend the event - or have an upcoming event after July 6th that you wish to promote, or want to congratulate Colette or Joe, you might want to run an ad in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY program book (1/6 page for $25 - SPACE IS LIMITED - 4 PAGES ALREADY SOLD!). For more information and to reserve your ad slot, see http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml

The CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY is sponsored in part by Jenna Esposito (http://www.jennaesposito.com/ ), Rob Langeder (http://www.roblangeder.com/ ), Suzanne Carrico (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/ ), Julian Yeo (http://www.julianyeo.com/ ), Eric Michael Gillett (http://www.ericmichaelgillett.com/ ) and Matt Leahy (http://www.mattleahy.com/ )

SIDEBAR AD SALE IN MAY & JUNE - 1 WEEK FREE WITH 3 PAID
You can advertise your show, your CD, your website or even yourself with a home-page side-bar ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website for less than $19 per week - and your ad will be seen by as many as 6000 viewers each day (based on our latest readership statistics). In fact the square 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch ad is the perfect size to show off your CD! Cost is just $25 per week for the first three weeks, and the 4th week is free. There are a few rules, and there is a limit as well. Only 5 home-page side-bar ads can run each week (2 are already taken for the next few weeks) and ads must be paid for in advance via PayPal. Of course they must relate to cabaret, and I reserve the right to reject any ad for any reason. The ad will appear only on the opening page of the website - at the top of the right hand column. They will be displayed top-to-bottom in the order paid for (do not send payment until you receive a PayPal invoice - this will avoid my having to make a refund if all slots are already sold out.

To read details, specs and see sample side-bar ads, go to http://svhamstra.com/BannerAdSale2007.shtml

LOOKING FOR BIRTHDAY PROGRAM BOOKLET ADVERTISERS
If you cannot attend the July 6th event you might want to run an ad in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY program book (1/6 page for $25 - SPACE IS LIMITED). Or perhaps you have an upcoming event after July 6th that you wish to promote, or want to congratulate our JEFF MATSON award winners, Collette Black and Joe Regan Jr., or simply want to congratulate our newsletter/website for 17 years of serving the cabaret community. A program ad may be just the thing for you! Not only will the booklet be presented to the 100+ folks attending the show, but a pdf of the booklet will be available for download on the website after the 6th of July. For more information and to reserve your ad slot, CLICK HERE: http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml

HERE & THERE
Well its another full issue and I have tried to cover all cabaret events that I have received press releases about through the end of May and into the first week in June. If you sent in a release for an event during May and it has not appeared as yet, please resend - but please make sure it is cabaret related and the information is detailed and complete. I have had to "toss out" several so-called releases this week because they amounted to nothing more than listings - no descriptive information at all.

Another reminder to everyone here in the US - Sunday the 13th is MOTHER'S DAY, and wether or not you have a mother, your Sunday will be impacted if you have any travel plans. Here in NYC - especially if the weather is nice - it will be impossible to get a table at any of the better restaurants (and flowers will be hard to come by as well). And getting around town and/or finding a parking place may be a nightmare. Use public transportation if you can, unless you have mom along (that would be chintzy). Take her to the cabaret! Moms love cabaret - and there are several special Mother's Day Sunday Brunch shows around town that will be a perfect way to take Mom out to eat and to a cabaret show at the same time!

Since last Thursday's issue I have been out every night to one or more cabaret shows! In fact my next cabaret-free date (according to my schedule so far) is not until Sunday the 13th. But what a wonderful bunch of shows I have been to!

I was back at Kristine Zbornik's fantastic, funny, MAC & BISTRO Award winning show on Monday night - unexpectedly. I was to meet Daniel at the BEST BUY store at the corner of 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue, and we got our signals crossed and didn't get there until just as the store was closing at 9:30 pm. (We thought they were open until 10:00 pm.) That happened to be right about the time that Kristine's show was happening around the corner at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ), so rather than waste the entire evening, we went back (third time for me, first time for Daniel) for another night of wildness probing "the inside of Kristine's brain." If you have not seen this one, get thee hence to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - only two more performances left, on the 14th & 21st at 7:00 pm.

Last night Daniel and I saw two fantastic shows featuring favorites we both love. At 7:00 pm we were at HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/ ) - OK, I was there at 7:00 pm and Daniel arrived at 7:30 for a very good reason - for Alice Frazier's new show, "Broadway Without Boundaries." I tell you this, Alice can sing just about anything - from operatic style to ballads to belt. Her incredible vocals were delightful - and the show was so much fun! Cabaret must entertain, and this gal knows exactly how to entertain. She will be back at HELEN'S on Thursday, May 17th at 7:00 pm - be sure to catch this show!

The reason for Daniel's delay was that on Monday night, as we were standing outside BEST BUY, Daniel noticed a cell phone on the sidewalk at his feet. Now Daniel has lost more cell phones over the years than anyone I know, and he knew exactly what the owner must have been feeling. So he was able to contact the owner, and he waited outside of HELEN'S where she met him to retrieve the phone - she was the one who was late.

Then, after Alice's show, we did make it over to BEST BUY well before 9:30 pm to purchase a needed cable and set of earphones and then once again went around the corner to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM, this time to see another favorite of ours, Barb Jungr. Ms. Jungr goes to the heart of every lyric - and so doing touched every heart in the room. Her song set was varied and eclectic. Her interpretations unique and inspiring. You have not experienced true cabaret until you see it done by Barb Jungr. She is at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM just one more performance - at 10:30 pm. The 8:00 pm show is Eric Michael Gillett, so if you want an amazing, exciting and memorable night of cabaret, catch the two shows! I will be at Eric's show - and might stay around for a second helping of Barb's show.

It's the coffee! Tuesday I found it impossible to get any writing done at all! It was like "treading water." Call it lethargic - I actually thought I might be coming down with the flu or something. But yesterday I was all perky and got so much work done I was congratulating myself. Then I realized the difference. I ran out of coffee on Sunday, and tried on Monday to get another pound or two of coffee beans (I have one of those coffee makers that grinds the beans fresh before it brews a pot). No luck - all I could find was bags of already ground coffee (I gave up on STARBUCKS - they have the whole bean coffee there but their prices are about 30% over everyone else). But Tuesday night I was able to snag a bag at the DUNKIN DONUTS in Queens, of all places. And Wednesday I was back at the computer, typing away. I drink at least 5 cups a day - I read somewhere that you should keep a balance in your life between coffee and alcohol, so I do my best to keep things even.

That's it for today - even with my 5-cup quota this morning I have run out of steam, so am sending this off sort of incomplete. More on Monday.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.

By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website).

IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

Your membership donations support this publication and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. If you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and would like to support us, why not join as a supporting member? Your donation is most important to me, not just to pay for my food, cable, phone, DSL and rent, etc., but also as a confirmation of your appreciation. Can you please help?

For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, just click on the JOIN HERE button on the website. You can even make your membership donation by credit card, using PayPal. If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your membership donations make this all possible.

Now it is time for a nap - once again I started this newsletter at 6:30 am - nearly six hours ago, and have been working on it pretty much non-stop (pausing occasionally to answer an e-mail - or pour another cup of coffee). More on Monday. Happy Mother's Day to all moms out there!

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
