TODAY'S FEATURE STORY

2ND ANNUAL ST. LOUIS CABARET CONFERENCE SET FOR AUGUST
RNI Productions announces the 2ND ANNUAL ST. LOUIS CABARET CONFERENCE, a 4-day Professional Development Workshop focusing on the Art of Cabaret Performance led by multiple award-winning performers and teachers Lina Koutrakos, Rick Jensen, Amanda McBroom And Alex Rybeck. Tim Schall is producer for this event which takes place at UNITY CHRIST CHURCH (33 North Skinker Street, St. Louis, MO - http://www.unitychristchurchstl.org/ ) from Thursday through Sunday, August 23rd through 26th.

Koutrakos and Jensen are returning to St. Louis after receiving rave reviews for facilitating the first St. Louis Cabaret Conference in August 2006. They are multiple award winning performers, teachers and directors who, for over 10 years, have taught on-going Advanced Performance workshops in New York. They have served on the faculty of The O'Neill Cabaret Symposium at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut and are currently on the faculty of The Cabaret Conference at Yale University and Summer in the City in New York. Koutrakos is a MAC Award (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) winning director who has guided countless performers through their one person shows and is a current 2007 MAC nominee for Best Major Female Artist for her show TORCH, which is playing in an open ended run at New York's Metropolitan Room. Jensen is a multiple MAC award wining music director, composer and arranger who has worked with, among others, Barbara Fasano, Tovah Feldshuh and cabaret legend Nancy LaMott.

This August they will be joined in St. Louis by cabaret legend Amanda McBroom and one of the finest music directors in the business, Alex Rybeck. McBroom has been called one of the greatest cabaret performers of her generation. She is an accomplished singer, actress and songwriter. Amanda shot to prominence when she composed the Bette Midler standard "The Rose". Rybeck is one of the top music directors in Manhattan's cabaret scene, having collaborated with Broadway and Cabaret stars Ann Hampton Callaway, Liz Callaway, Faith Prince, Marni Nixon, Jason Graae, Kitty Carlisle Hart and many others. Both Rybeck and McBroom serve on the faculty of the Cabaret Conference at Yale University and teach workshops in New York and around the country.

The core of the 4 days will focus on performance coaching, facilitated by Koutrakos, Jensen, McBroom and Rybeck. Singers will prepare at least 5 songs that are memorized and ready to work. Participants receive individualized feedback on their performance in the following areas: connection to material, physical choices, song selection, interpretation, arrangements, audience connection and internal/external focus of song. Other topics included in the event are: constructing a show, working with your musical director, the importance of "the arrangement" and Patter: What to say/What not to say.

The 4 day event will include an ALUMNI SHOWCASE performance on Thursday evening August 23rd, featuring returning singers from the 2006 St. Louis Cabaret Conference. McBroom and Koutrakos will also perform on separate evenings and the St. Louis Cabaret Conference will close Sunday evening August 26th with a PARTICIPANT SHOWCASE featuring all of the 2007 participant's work.

Tuition is $625, and includes tickets to Alumni Showcase, An Evening with Amanda McBroom and Lina Koutrakos with Rick Jensen. Payment plan is available. Space is limited to 30 performers. Interested participants should contact Tim Schall, RNI Productions at 314-721-4634 or by email at stlouiscabaretconf@sbcglobal.net

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE

NO CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE ISSUE MEMORIAL DAY
Since Memorial Day always falls on a Monday, and since Monday is usually the day we send out our Monday issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (what else?) there will be no issue sent to our subscribers on Monday, May 28th. The normal Monday news items will be combined into the Thursday issue of May 24th or the Thursday issue of May 31st.

SIDEBAR AD SALE ENDS JUME 30th - 1 WEEK FREE WITH 3 PAID
You can advertise your show, your CD, your website or even yourself with a home-page side-bar ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website for less than $19 per week - and your ad will be seen by as many as 6000 viewers each day (based on our latest readership statistics). In fact the square 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch ad is the perfect size to show off your CD! Cost is $25 per week for the first three weeks, and the 4th week is free (no discounts on Side-Bar ads). There are a few rules, and there is a limit as well. Only 5 home-page side-bar ads can run each week and ads must be paid for in advance via PayPal. Of course they must relate to cabaret, and I reserve the right to reject any ad for any reason. The ad will appear only on the opening page of the website - at the top of the right hand column. They will be displayed top-to-bottom in the order paid for (do not send payment until you receive a PayPal invoice - this will avoid my having to make a refund if all slots are already sold out. Side-bar deal only through Saturday, June 30, 2007.

To read details, specs and see sample side-bar ads, go to http://svhamstra.com/BannerAdSale2007.shtml

HERE & THERE
This looks like a week of celebration! Tonight, May 14th, THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) celebrates its First Anniversary, with a private, invitation-only party at what has become one of NYC's hottest nightspots. Congratulations to owners Steve & Chris Mazzilli and manager Lennie Watts for giving cabaret lovers in this town a great, well equipped and well designed space to perform and attend cabaret. The club has presented a variety of performers and performance styles, from major Broadway and film stars to newcomers, from jazz, to pop, to cabaret, to comedy, to musical comedy to Broadway. It has been quite a year.

Then on Wednesday night May 16th, in midtown, a brand new piano bar, UNCLE CHARLIE'S (139 East 45th Street 2nd Floor, NYC - 212-661-9097 - http://www.unclecharliesnyc.com/ ) opens with a gala party open to all that starts around 6:00 pm and is promised to continue until those wee hours in the morning, which usually means 4:00 am around these parts. David Pellegrene will be at the piano from about 9:00 pm on and he asked me to pass along the word that the mic is always open at this new nightspot. I stopped by the club last week Thursday night and had a great time - no I didn't get up to the mic to sing - that is a myth. This little space is well designed - it includes a bar at the front, a lounge area, a separate piano bar area and a large garden area at the back (yes, there are a few folks in town that still smoke, and now they too have a piano bar where they can feel part of the party).

Speaking of celebrating, tickets for the 17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW FOR CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) on July 6th officially went on sale May 1st, just a little over two weeks ago, but already over half of the 100 available seats have been sold! We have already booked some great performers for this year's show. As usual we will be presenting some newcomers along with some top names in our birthday show. I will be sending out invitations for a few more later this week.

Last week we added two new performers to the show. Piano-bar specialist David Pellegrene, who can be found 6 nights a week in two piano bar venues (including Thursday through Saturday at UNCLE CHARLIE'S which opens on Wednesday), will be at the piano before the start of the show, starting around 6:00 pm, to add a note of festivity to the evening as attendees are being seated. Come early and schmooze a bit. We already had booked 2007 MAC AWARD Female Debut winner Esther Beckman, so we thought it only fitting to add 2007 MAC AWARD Male Debut winner Rob Langeder to the show list.

Other performers scheduled to appear are Lennie Watts, Alice Frazier, Jay Rogers, Francesca Amari, Bruce Clough, Michael Brill, and Sue Matsuki (who is helping us with the program planning). Steven Ray Watkins has agreed to serve this year as musical director.

By the way, I have over 40 great performers who have volunteered to perform in the show. Please realize that we are limited to a 90 minute show, and I am attempting to include newcomers, old-timers, comedy, jazz and cabaret performers on the list to give a real variety of styles to the folks who will be attending, so if I don't use you this year, I am sure you will understand.

An important part of the evening will be the presentation of the 2007 JEFF MATSON AWARDS. The JEFF MATSON AWARD was created to honor the memory of songwriter/writer/director/producer/graphic designer Jeff Matson, who passed away suddenly on April 2, 2005 from a rare blood disorder. His talents were many, but his greatest talent was that of inspiring and encouraging other performers towards perfection in their craft. In 2005 the first award was presented to D.C. Anderson, and last year's recipients were Trudi Mann and Hector Coris.

This year we will be presenting the 2007 JEFF MATSON AWARD to two very worthy recipients - truly deserving of this recognition. Each has been an inspiration, a resource and a good friend to cabaret performers. This year's recipients are Collette Black (booking manager UPSTAIRS at ROSE'S TURN) and Joe Regan, Jr. (best friend a cabaret performer could have). Joe has even offered to perform at the show!

In addition, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be announcing the recipient of our first DOTTIE BURMAN award, to be given to a deserving cabaret songwriter. More on this to come.

I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible will attend the party. This just might be the last time we have such an affair, so try not to miss it. Showtime is 7:00 pm - the doors open at 6:00 pm to give folks plenty of time to schmooze around before the show starts. Manager Lennie Watts and owners Chris & Steve Mazzilli have been totally helpful in making sure that it will truly be a festive and memorable occasion.

Tickets are $35, but if you rejoin as a 2007-2008 Member the price drops to $25 - and there is even more: If you join and pay for a ticket and a membership at the same time, the cost is $20 for the ticket plus $20 for a SILVER or $75 for a GOLD membership - this $40 or $95 COMBO price saves you $15! (the club's standard 2-beverage minimum - not included in the ticket price - applies).

If you haven't ordered your tickets yet, just go to the website and click on the line that says CABARET HOTLINE'S 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY TICKETS ON SALE NOW! Then follow the link to the ticket order form - it should be pretty clear as to what to do. Then sit back and wait for a PayPal invoice/conformation - of the 100 seats available and OVER 1/2 of them already sold, and I don't want you to send in a PayPal payment or a check unless I actually have a seat for you. When you receive the invoice/confirmation, send in your payment - your reservation is not considered valid until your payment is received. Orders are limited to 4 per person.

If you cannot attend the event - or have an upcoming event after July 6th that you wish to promote, or want to congratulate Colette or Joe, you might want to run an ad in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY program book (1/6 page for $25 - SPACE IS LIMITED - 5 1/2 PAGES ALREADY SOLD!). That's about all for today - there were a large number of news items that we could not include in last Thursday's newsletter that we have been able to get into this issue. But to do so, we took up a lot of writing time that we usually devote to this section. The good news is that I have completely run out of news items regarding cabaret events for the next 4 or 5 weeks - I don't want to get too far ahead on the news! More on Thursday.

AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER: Each MONDAY issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter includes listings for all the banner advertisers on the website as long as the banner is running. In most cases there are more detailed articles on these items in the CABARET NEWS section of the website.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them!

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places where the show information can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

Hope you enjoyed this longer-than-lately newsletter today. If you read this far, I assume you did. I'll be back on Thursday with a lot more!

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
