SEE FULL STORY ON THE WEBSITE at http://www.svhamstra.com/NewsCH07070517th1.shtml
If it's anything to do with cabaret, you'll probably
read it here first.
This is the MIDWEEK Issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE which includes
news, breaking stories and notes, cabaret tips, announcements of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE reviews, plus listings of shows offering discounts
to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The MONDAY Issue of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE includes cabaret news from around the world, and also
includes information on all the banner ads running on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website.
SPECIAL TO AOL READERS: Some of you may be receiving
these issues up to 24 hours late - AOL has been "bouncing back"
a lot of copies lately, and I have to wait several hours before
they will let me send any e-mails to AOL accounts. Sorry.
TODAY'S FEATURE STORY
KAREN SAUNDERS TO MAKE RARE NYC APPEARANCE AT HOTLINE BIRTHDAY!
One of my favorite female vocalists, Karen Saunders, has been performing
out of town each of the past two summers and each year she has been
unable to accept my invitation to perform at my annual birthday bash
- but this year (unless another major contract comes in before than)
she will be in the NYC area and has agreed to be part of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE's 17th Birthday Party. This is a rare treat for NYers - Karen
has been performing all over the world but only occasionally performs
in New York City! What makes this extra special for me is that Karen's
NYC debut show at DANNY'S in 1990 was one of the first cabaret shows
I saw after I began publishing CABARET HOTLINE. Plus she won the MAC
Female Cabaret Debut award at the first MAC AWARDS show I went to
after joining MAC! There's a lot more to the story that I can't wait
to tell folks who attend the birthday show.
If you have not yet ordered your tickets, you better
act fast. Tickets for the 17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW FOR CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440
- http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) on July 6th only went on sale less than three weeks ago, but already
65 of the 100 available seats (as of noon today) have been sold!
In addition to Karen, I have booked other great performers for this
year's show. As usual we will be presenting some newcomers along
with some top names in cabaret.
Other performers scheduled to appear are multi-award
winning Lennie Watts, the delightful Alice Frazier from Erie PA
(she has a show this Thursday at HELEN'S), 2007 MAC & BISTRO Award
winner Jay Rogers, Francesca Amari from Michigan, Bruce Clough from
Philadelphia, 2007 MAC STANDUP COMEDY Award winner Michael Brill,
2007 MAC AWARD FEMALE & MALE DEBUT winners Esther Beckman & Rob
Langeder, and Sue Matsuki (who is helping us with the program planning).
Steven Ray Watkins has agreed to serve this year as musical director.
Plus piano-bar specialist David Pellegrene will be at the piano
before the start of the show, starting around 6:00 pm, to add a
note of festivity to the evening as attendees are being seated.
An important part of the show will be the presentation
of the 2007 JEFF MATSON AWARDS, created to honor the memory of songwriter/writer/director/producer/graphic
designer Jeff Matson. In 2005 the first award was presented to D.C.
Anderson, and last year's recipients were Trudi Mann and Hector
Coris (who will both be attending the show). This year we will honor
two more very worthy recipients. Each has been an inspiration, a
resource and a good friend to cabaret performers: Collette Black
(booking manager UPSTAIRS at ROSE'S TURN) and Joe Regan, Jr. (best
friend a cabaret performer could have). Joe has even offered to
perform at the show!
In addition, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will be announcing
the recipient of our first DOTTIE BURMAN award, to be given to a
deserving cabaret songwriter. More on this to come.
I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible will
attend the party. This just might be the last time we have such
an affair, so try not to miss it. METROPOLITAN ROOM manager Lennie
Watts and owners Chris & Steve Mazzilli have been totally helpful
in making sure that it will truly be a festive and memorable occasion.
Tickets are $35, but if you rejoin as a 2007-2008
Member the ticket price drops to $25. But wait! There is even more:
If you join and pay for a ticket and a membership at the same time,
the cost is $20 for the ticket and $20 for a SILVER or $75 for a
GOLD membership - $40 or $95 COMBO price (saves you $15!) (the club's
standard 2-beverage minimum - not included in the ticket price -
applies).
If you haven't ordered your tickets yet, just go to
the website and click on the line that says CABARET HOTLINE'S 17th
BIRTHDAY PARTY TICKETS ON SALE NOW! Then follow the link to the
ticket order form - it should be pretty clear as to what to do.
Then sit back and wait for a PayPal invoice/conformation - I don't
want you to send in a payment unless I actually have a seat for
you. When you receive the invoice/confirmation, send in your payment
- your reservation is not considered valid until your payment is
received. Orders are limited to 4 per person.
If you cannot attend the event - or have an upcoming
event after July 6th that you wish to promote, or want to congratulate
Colette or Joe, you might want to run an ad in the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY program book (1/6 page for $25 - SPACE
IS LIMITED - 6 PAGES ALREADY SOLD!). For more information and to

HERE & THERE
OK, so I misbehaved a bit last night. So I stayed out a lot longer
than I should have. So OK, it is 6:00 am and I am really feeling the
results of my debauchery this morning. So I just made the strongest
pot of coffee I ever made in my life. And took 4 aspirin. And here
I am, trying to write another issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE with
this screen-filling blank page in front of me and I know that there
is no way I am going to get this finished by noon! They can hear me
yawning in the apartment across the hall, I am sure.
I wasn't supposed to happen this way. I was simply
going to go to Larry Gatlin's show at 8:00 pm at THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) last night, and then drop in at a club opening afterwards. Just
that. Show - club opening. All so simple. Home by 11:00 pm. That
was my schedule. But as with all live entertainment events, schedules
are subject to change.
Country music, now that's not so wild, is it? But
what a show Larry Gatlin gave us! Host Jamie deRoy had a severe
case of laryngitis, but that didn't keep her from introducing someone
she called "the greatest songwriter she ever met" and by the end
of the night I (and just about everyone in the sold-out house) pretty
much agreed! Once the super-talented Mr. Gatlin took the stage it
was total entertainment. I have never seen a audience get so involved
with a show! I didn't see anyone dancing in the aisles, but short
of that the place was jumping. People were singing along, clapping
along, cheering along, and simply did not want the show to end.
And sprinkled in the audience were stars from jazz, cabaret and
country - all invited to join Larry on stage to sing backup for
the final number. I believe a bit of history was made last night
as jazz legend Keely Smith along with about a dozen others performers
(yes, folks, that was Georga Osborne up there, next to Jamie deRoy)
to sing backup for a country song! The show was taped to be part
of the "Jamie deRoy & friends" cable TV series, so watch for it
(if you live in an area where Jamie's show is broadcast - see http://www.jamiederoy.com/
)
Against the wishes of the audience (they would have
stayed all night!), but for a genuinely good reason, Larry ended
the show by 9:45 pm - you see, on-street parking, for some strange
reason, becomes illegal after 10:00 pm on West 22nd Street, and
at 9:55 pm every night two traffic patrol cars are parked at the
head of the street, and precisely at 10:00:01 the agents begin writing
tickets. Some nights they are joined by tow trucks.
Next on my schedule was to drop by at the gala opening
party midtown at UNCLE CHARLIE'S (139 East 45th Street 2nd Floor,
NYC - 212-661-9097 - http://www.unclecharliesnyc.com/
). Honestly, I was going to just drop by, have a drink, toast the
club's opening, and head for home, to get a good night's sleep so
I could arise early to work on this newsletter. But the Gatlin show
must have put me in a "party mood." Arriving a little later than
my schedule, at 10:45 pm, I was greeted by owner Michael Ng, and
the next thing I knew it was 2:05 am!
This spanking new piano bar is split into three sections
- a bar/lounge as you enter, an enclosed piano bar area, and an
outdoor garden (especially convenient for folks who still smoke).
The place was packed when I arrived, but I was able to squeeze into
one of the padded benches in the piano bar section where David Pellegrene
was "holding court" and the open-mic was kept warm by a procession
of amazing vocalists. David also kindly gave over the piano bench
to each of the many other pianists who had dropped by to launch
this new venue. One special treat was catching Chicago-based (and
darned cute) pianist Mark Ferris, who had filled in at the piano
for David when he took a week off earlier this month. I even got
a copy of Mark's new CD "Fields of Gold" and it is already in my
iTunes file ready to be downloaded on my little mini iPod shuffle.
Mark was leaving to return to Chicago today, and I had to chance
to send with him my own personal good wishes to my cabaret friends
in Chicago (at least as many of them that I could remember at 2:00
am).
Also taking the keyboard was Mitch Kahn, who I had
not seen in months. Mitch does a lot of private party work and this
was one of his rare nights off (he had just come from Ginny Dustin's
birthday party show at THE LAMBS, and was in the mood to party-on
as well). Young Jose Luis was there with his harp, and he joined
with David on several songs. Also joining the festivities were John
Hoglund and Don Schaeffer. Even critic Rob Lester was still there
at 2:00 am! Now if I only could remember the names of all the very
talented folks who took the mic I would be happy, but it is 9:20
am and part of my brain is still sleeping (or at least a little
numb). At 3:00 am I arrived home to be greeted by a very angry cat
(yes, a cat lives here), who apparently was in need of an early-morning
snack.
Now, this was not the only party I went to this week. On Monday I
was there when the METROPOLITAN ROOM celebrated its first anniversary
with a festive, talent-filled gala. Oh what a night that was! Steven
Ray Watkins was at the piano as we took our places, and the room soon
filled with the cream of the NYC cabaret performers, cabaret press
and cabaret fans. On stage host/performer Lennie Watts presented some
of the acts that performed in the room over the past 12 months, including
several 2007 MAC AWARD winners: the fabulous Jay Rogers, the amazing
Lina Koutrakos, super-talented Patrick DeGennero, zany Kristine Zbornik;
plus country legend Larry Gatlin (who would be performing on Tuesday
& Wednesday), the incomparable Mary Bond Davis, the incredible David
Colbert, the very talented Lorinda Lisitza and even a solo number
by the aforementioned Steven Ray Watkins.
But the most memorable part of the show to me was
the opening remarks of the owners of the club, Chris and Steve Mazzilli.
In addition to thanking all the staff and all the folks came to
shows night after night, they mentioned one thing that makes cabaret
folks so special. In the 11 years that Chris and Steve operated
GOTHAM COMEDY CLUB, not one person on leaving the club expressed
any gratitude, but in just the one year of operating THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM, over 1000 folks stopped after the show to personally thank
them for providing such a wonderful space for cabaret.
We've received word that Margaret Whiting is a little "under the weather"
and I know she would love to get a "best wishes" card from her many
cabaret friends - her address is 41 West 58th Street, New York, NY
10019
Bob Egan, for many years the booking manager at the now closed ODETTE'S
writes that he is opening his very own club appropriately called BOB
EGAN'S in New Hope, PA on July 3rd - with a special "mystery" performer.
Stay tuned.
You have just two more weeks to catch Jerry Scott at NINO'S TUSCANY
(117 West 58th Street, NYC - 212-757-8630 - http://www.ninostuscany.com/
) - his last night there is Saturday May 26th. Jerry is there from
8:00 pm to midnight, Thursdays through Saturdays.
Now you have another place on the web to read about cabaret news!
Scott Barbarino has just launched a new website called "Cabaret Exchange"
), an interactive website with lots of features, articles and reader-submitted
comments. Check it out!
We have a lot more stuff to say on a lot of topics near the bottom
of this newsletter that you might want to check out as well.

AROUND THE TOWN - NYC NIGHTLIFE & CABARET
Some "last chances:"
Eric Michael Gillett in "Hook, Line & Singer" last
show tonight at 8:00 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street,
NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
). This is one of the most entertaining shows in town - performed
by an expert in the art of entertaining. Eric recounts the "soundtrack"
of his life as it pours from his car radio in a stirring ride down
memory lane. Not to be missed.
Phil Bond's autobiographical "My Friend, The Cat"
show has its last performance next week Friday at THE WEST BANK
CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909
- http://www.westbankcafe.com/theater/schedule
) at 8:00 pm. Funny, entertaining, and at times very touching story
of a boy who becomes a man while spending less than a dozen years
with a very wise (and clever) feline partner.
2007 MAC & BISTRO AWARD winner Kristine Zbornik has
just one more night, Monday, May 21st at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34
West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) of her wild, zany and totally funny show. I can't say anything
more except you simply must catch this one, if the show isn't sold
out already!
She comes all the way from Erie PA a few dozen times
a year to see cabaret shows in NYC and then occasionally does one
herself. I am speaking of Alice Frazier, who has one performance
left of her show "Broadway Without Boundaries" tonight, Thursday
May 17th at 7:00 pm at HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE
(169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/
). This lady can (and does) sing anything - opera, jazz, pop, and
I even hear she can rap. I chose her as one of my guest performers
at my 17th Birthday Party, and you will easily see why when you
hear her!
Tanya Moberly has two more performances of her amazing series of song
collections on Fridays, May 18th & 25th at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West
46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ).
In the style of the great Mabel Mercer, with nary a line of "patter"
Ms. Moberly simply sings some songs, and in so doing reveals more
of herself and more of each song than dozens of paragraphs of mere
words could do. Powerful and captivating. Not to be missed.
I have a confession to make: I have never watched a single complete
AMERICAN IDOL TV show - a few snatches here and there, but never a
complete show. But many readers have, I am told, and one of the show's
finalists by the name of J. Paul Koehler is performing tomorrow night,
Friday May 18th at 9:30 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street,
NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/
). I ran into him two weeks ago at Tanya Moberly's show (also this
Friday at MAMA'S but at 7:00 pm) and promised I would catch his show
(especially since Jay Rogers is directing).
Adriane Tolsch has two more shows this month of her very funny and
constantly changing show "None of Your Damn Business!" at UPSTAIRS
AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438 - http://www.rosesturn.com/
) on Fridays, May 18th & 25th at 7:00 pm. She tore the roof off the
cabaret room at DON'T TELL MAMA at my SWEET SIXTEEN anniversary show
last year. Her show takes a comic look at "growing older" and you
will discover that those aren't wrinkles on your face, they are "laugh
lines."
Born and raised in the Garden State, I went to college in Michigan
and even stayed there a few extra years and lost my New Jersey accent
in so doing. But it all came back to me last Saturday night when I
went to UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438
- http://www.rosesturn.com/
) and saw Pennie Diamond Quintano's "Jersey Tomato" show at 7:00 pm.
This dynamic performer sings and tap dances, and has more energy than
a ESSO refinery (or whatever name they go by these days). With a Jersey
accent you can cut with a knife, she relates in song, dance and story,
the "ups and downs" of searching for career and love in the shadow
of the Empire State. It was so much fun it made me long for a sandwich
of grilled Taylor Ham with cheese or a Rutt's Hut hot dog with relish-mustard.
Ah, the misspent days of my youth!
My three sisters all receive these newsletters and I can already predict
that each of them is going to send me an e-mail later today scolding
me for all this partying I have been doing. So I will promise right
now that I will not go to THE AFTER PARTY this Friday night at THE
WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC
- 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/theater/schedule
) at 10:30 pm as I have done for the past two Friday nights and stay
out until 2:00 am having fun with some of the most talented kids in
town taking their turn at the open mic. I will not take part this
week in all the great fun that Brandon Cutrell, Alysha Umphress, Lisa
Asher and Ray Fellman dish out at these weekly fun-blasts. I will
not be there this week to hear special guest E. Clayton Cornelious
from A CHORUS LINE. Hmmm. Well, lets just say that I don't plan to
be there. I might be there, but haven't really committed myself to
be there. No cover - no minimum. Hmmm. Well, let's just say that I
hope Brandon saves me a seat just in case I just might drop by - for
just a few minutes.
ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section
of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release
of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information
- and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference
to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website
or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together
the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your
press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded
photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your
post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to
"click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your
press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format
I write these issues in and use for the website).
IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
Your membership donations support this publication and the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website. If you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and
would like to support us, why not join as a supporting member? Your
donation is most important to me, not just to pay for my food, cable,
phone, DSL and rent, etc., but also as a confirmation of your appreciation.
Can you please help?
For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE, just click on the JOIN HERE button on the website. You can
even make your membership donation by credit card, using PayPal.
If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send
a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.
I realize that there is probably far more information here than you
might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that
for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the
few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances.
To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact
that every issue published is also posted on my website means another
place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google,
etc.) alike. Your membership donations make this all possible.
Now before I fall asleep, I better e-mail this off. Then I will fall
asleep. I have a "short" night tonight - just picking up my mail and
catching Seth's Broadway Chatterbox at 6:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA,
then back home for some additional "R&R" - there is a long weekend
coming up, with Tanya Moberly and J. Paul Koehler on my schedule for
Friday at MAMA'S (and the AFTER PARTY at the BEECHMAN not in my current
schedule), Rose Andrez at THE DUPLEX on Saturday with maybe a POOLE
PARTY or two, and then David Gurland at THE BEECHMAN on Sunday. Of
course, as with all live entertainment events, schedule is subject
to change.
Now, where did I put that aspirin?
And that is just about the way it was.
