IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
SIDEBAR AD SALE EXTENDED
TO JULY 14th - 1 WEEK FREE WITH 3 PAID
You can advertise your
show, your CD, your website or even yourself with a home-page side-bar
ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website for less than $19 per week
- and your ad will be seen by as many as 6000 viewers each day (based
on our latest readership statistics). In fact the square 2 1/2 x 2
1/2 inch ad is the perfect size to show off your CD! Cost is $25 per
week for the first three weeks, and the 4th week is free (no discounts
on Side-Bar ads). There are a few rules, and there is a limit as well.
Only 5 home-page side-bar ads can run each week and ads must be paid
for in advance via PayPal. Of course they must relate to cabaret,
and I reserve the right to reject any ad for any reason. The ad will
appear only on the opening page of the website - at the top of the
right hand column. They will be displayed top-to-bottom in the order
paid for (do not send payment until you receive a PayPal invoice -
this will avoid my having to make a refund if all slots are already
sold out. Side-bar deal only through Saturday, July 14th, 2007. To
read details, specs and see sample side-bar ads, go to http://svhamstra.com/BannerAdSale2007.shtml
LOOKING FOR BIRTHDAY PROGRAM
BOOKLET ADVERTISERS
If you cannot attend the
July 6th event you might want to run an ad in the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY program book (1/6 page for $25 - SPACE
IS LIMITED). Or perhaps you have an upcoming event after July 6th
that you wish to promote, or want to congratulate our JEFF MATSON
award winners, Collette Black and Joe Regan Jr., or simply want to
congratulate our newsletter/website for 17 years of serving the cabaret
community. A program ad may be just the thing for you! Not only will
the booklet be presented to the 100+ folks attending the show, but
a pdf of the booklet will be available for download on the website
after the 6th of July. For more information and to reserve your ad
slot, CLICK HERE: http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml
HERE & THERE
If you haven't seen too
much of me out and about these last few days, it is because I had
to slow down a little - I have two built-in "early warning" systems
that tell me to take things a little easy for a few days. This time
it was my repaired knee that began to hurt a bit - the result of trying
to get to too many places in too short a time. Here in Manhattan,
the fastest way to get from point "a" to point "b" - or in my case
cabaret "a" to cabaret "b" is by subway.
Subways
are normally found underground - sometimes quite deeply underground
- and this means climbing a lot of stairs. And being the type of
guy who hates to show his age, I attempt to keep pace with everyone
else who is using the same staircase. On Saturday night the knee
started to complain, so I gave it a nice weekend's rest that actually
extended through Tuesday, but avoiding stairways almost completely.
I only used buses when going anywhere (takes more time, but much
less stress on the knee), and avoided venues that required stair
climbing to get to the cabaret room.
Things were
pretty much back to normal as of last night, so I am back on schedule
- tapering in, as they say. I will me at DON'T TELL MAMA at 6:00
pm tonight for Seth Rudetsky's Broadway Chatterbox, then a stroll
around the neighborhood to have a light supper, than off for some
more cabaret - nothing on my schedule so it will be "pot luck."
Folks running banner ads
for the next few weeks get an added bonus: their banners are bing
displayed about 2 to 3 times more than normally - with only 5 banners
running instead of the usual 10 to 15, they get double or triple to
display time. And this is why we have our membership renewal time
in July - we need to sign up new and renewing members to make up for
the usual drop off in banner advertising in June, July & August. All
current members will be receiving a reminder this weekend that memberships
expire for the 2006-2007 membership year on July 5th. You can help
us keep our bills paid by joining or rejoining in the next few weeks.
That is also why we have
our annual birthday party event - not just to have a good time with
great entertainment, but also urge folks to renew or join CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE (you get $15 off the ticket price if you join or renew
at the same time as purchasing your ticket). 75 folks have already
purchased tickets - and most of them joined or renewed at the same
time - which means we have just 25 seats left for the show!
I have booked
other great performers for this year's show - some newcomers along
with some of the top names in cabaret including multi-award winning
Lennie Watts, the delightful Alice Frazier from Erie PA, 2007 MAC
& BISTRO Award winner Jay Rogers, Francesca Amari from Michigan,
Bruce Clough - popular performer in both theater & cabaret in Philadelphia,
2007 MAC STANDUP COMEDY Award winner Michael Brill, 2007 MAC AWARD
FEMALE & MALE DEBUT winners Esther Beckman & Rob Langeder, the legendary
Karen Saunders, acclaimed vocalist Karen Oberlin and one of NYCs
favorites, Sue Matsuki (who is helping us with the program planning).
Steven Ray Watkins has agreed to serve this year as musical director.
Piano-bar entertainer David Pellegrene will be at the piano before
the start of the show, starting around 6:00 pm, to add a note of
festivity to the evening as attendees are being seated.
If you have
not yet ordered your tickets, you better act fast. Tickets for the
17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW FOR CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) on July 6th only went on sale around the 1st of May, but already
75 of the 100 available seats have been sold! At this rate we expect
to be sold out by the 1st of June!
I was hoping
to announce the last few additions to our performer list for the
show, but I am awaiting word from the performers - hopefully this
will be completed before the next issue. I will also be announcing
the recipient of the first CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE songwriter award,
presented in memory of the late Dottie Burman.
The recipients
of the 2007 JEFF MATSON AWARDS, created to honor the memory of songwriter/writer/director/producer/graphic
designer Jeff Matson, have already been announced, and now we will
let you know that last year's recipients, Trudi Mann and Hector
Coris, will be presenting the awards to this year's recipients:
Collette Black (booking manager UPSTAIRS at ROSE'S TURN) and Joe
Regan, Jr. (best friend a cabaret performer could have).
The CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY is sponsored in part by Jenna
Esposito (http://www.jennaesposito.com/
), Rob Langeder (http://www.roblangeder.com/
), Suzanne Carrico (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/
), Julian Yeo (http://www.julianyeo.com/
), Eric Michael Gillett (http://www.ericmichaelgillett.com/
) and Matt Leahy (http://www.mattleahy.com/
)
NY's Rick Skye has been
garnering some really fantastic reviews, and now some awards for his
"Slice 'o Minnelli" show currently playing in Dublin, Ireland. Here's
a quote he sent that was published in the Irish press:
"The brilliantly talented Rick Skye was awarded the
Hilton Edwards Award for "Outstanding Production" and Michael Mac
Liammoir Award for "Outstanding Achievement in Performance" for
his role as "Liza" in "A Slice O' MInnelli" at the closing Gala
for the 4th Annual Dublin Gay Theatre Festival. His sold out run
raised the bar for theatrical presentations at the festival and
he was cheered with well deserved standing ovations at each performance."
It is "FLEET WEEK" here
in town - and a whole string of battleships, cruisers and destroyers
sailed into the harbor earlier this week, and the city is awash with
young sailor lads and lassies in their summer whites. The problem
for me is that they seem younger every year! I swear some of them
look like they 12 years old! How old must I look to them!
Time to get this issue
off - and get some relaxation time in. Once again I started around
6:00 am - I figured that the power company would be jack-hammering
on the street below again today as they have been for the past three
days. They start around 9:00 am, so I figured I could get at least
three hours of writing in before the racket started. Wouldn't you
know, they never showed up today! Looks like they are covering over
the hole in the street. Peace at last!
We have a lot more stuff
to say on a lot of topics near the bottom of this newsletter that
you might want to check out as well.

the blue button marker TIPS & FAQs). There you can find answers to
most of your questions about cabaret. Check it out (and let me know

MONDAY MAY 28th
Here in the US, Monday
the 28th is a holiday - Memorial Day - which at one time was called
"Decoration Day" when folks visited military and other cemeteries
to decorate the grave-sites of veterans with flags and flowers. These
days the only "memorializing" done seems to be remembering what time
the department stores open and close and where the biggest and best
bargains can be found. Many cabarets and piano bars have shorter hours
on this day, so check by phone if you have plans to use the holiday
to enjoy a live entertainment event.

AROUND THE TOWN - NYC NIGHTLIFE
& CABARET
SOME "PICKS" and "LAST
CHANCES:"
You have just one more
week to catch Jerry Scott at NINO'S TUSCANY (117 West 58th Street,
NYC - 212-757-8630 - http://www.ninostuscany.com/
) - his last night there is Saturday May 26th. Jerry is there from
8:00 pm to midnight, Thursdays through Saturdays.
Phil Bond's
autobiographical "My Friend, The Cat" show has its last performance
Friday the 25th at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407
West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/theater/schedule
) at 8:00 pm. Funny, entertaining, and at times very touching story
of a boy who becomes a man while spending less than a dozen years
with a very wise (and clever) feline partner.
2007 MAC
AWARD winner, singer/songwriter Lina Koutrakos returns to THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) for one last time on Saturday, June 2nd at 11:00 pm with her acclaimed
show "Torch."
Tanya Moberly
has one more performances of her amazing series of song collections
on Friday, May 25th at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC
- 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/
). In the style of the great Mabel Mercer, with nary a line of "patter"
Ms. Moberly simply sings some songs, and in so doing reveals more
of herself and more of each song that dozens of paragraphs of mere
words could do. Powerful and captivating. Not to be missed.
Adriane
Tolsch has one more show this month of her very funny and constantly
changing show "None of Your Damn Business!" at UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S
TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438 - http://www.rosesturn.com/
) on Fridays, May 25th at 7:00 pm. She tore the roof off the cabaret
room at DON'T TELL MAMA at my SWEET SIXTEEN anniversary show last
year. Her show takes a comic look at "growing older" and you will
discover that those aren't wrinkles on your face, they are "laugh
lines."
The Ross
Patterson Little Big Band continues its monthly gig at THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) on Friday, June 1st at 10:30 pm - the final show of the series
before he takes a break for the summer. Accomplished pianist and
arranger Ross Patterson lends his eclectic taste and style to standards
and his own original tunes. Joined by Aaron Heick on sax, Antoine
Silverman on violin, Tom Hubbard on bass and Eric Halvorson on drums,
The Little Big Band promises an evening full of energy, great melodies
and a touch of humor.
Currently
living (and performing) in Wisconsin, Annie Hughes returns to NYC
and HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue,
NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/
) for one night only, Thursday, May 31st at 9:30 pm with her acclaimed
show "Back...and Forth." Musical director is Daryl Kojak. This show
sold out last time around - get on the phone today if you want a
reservation.
After a
seven-month run at THE TRIAD (158 West 72nd Street, NYC - 212-362-2511
- http://www.Triadnyc.com/
), the hit show "When The Lights Go On Again" featuring songs of
World War II will be closing on Sunday, May 27th. The show is currently
presented on Friday nights at 7:00 pm and Saturdays & Sundays at
3:00 pm. "When The Lights Go On Again" an Original Cast Recording
is now available online through Footlight Records and CDBaby.com.
Karen Mack
& Michael Holland end their current "Blend-o-matic! The All-Request
Show" run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440
- http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) after their triumphant sold-out shows in 2006 & 2007 at NYC's
hottest cabaret venue on Wednesday May 30th at 7:00 pm.
ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE
NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other
shows around the country and around the world can be found on the
CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you
get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs,
giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other
cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me
a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website
or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together
the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your
press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded
photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your
post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to
"click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your
press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format
I write these issues in and use for the website).
IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter
I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find
published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?
Your membership donations
support this publication and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. If
you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and would like to support us,
why not join as a supporting member? Your donation is most important
to me, not just to pay for my food, cable, phone, DSL and rent, etc.,
but also as a confirmation of your appreciation. Can you please help?
For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE, just click on the JOIN HERE button on the website. You can
even make your membership donation by credit card, using PayPal.
If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send
a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.
I realize that there is
probably far more information here than you might be able to digest
in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned,
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread
the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about
their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published
is also posted on my website means another place where they can be
found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your membership
donations make this all possible.
This was a "double issue"
since there will be no CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter sent on Monday
the 28th. The next issue will be sent out on Thursday, May 31st. Of
course, if an item of importance to cabaret should occur, it will
be noted on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE message board and elsewhere
on the website.
Actually, this issue includes all cabaret news items
and press releases that I have received regarding events through
June 19th, which is nearly a month away! And now for a nice, long,
restful weekend! See you right here next Thursday.
And that is just about
the way it was.
