TODAY'S FEATURE STORY

MARIA GENTILE CHOSEN TO BE SONGWRITER HONORED AT BIRTHDAY SHOW
Maria Gentile will be honored at CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE'S 17th BIRTHDAY SHOW as the first recipient of the DOTTIE BURMAN SONGWRITER AWARD. Maria Gentile (AEA SAG ASCAP AFTRA) is a singer, songwriter, actress, and comedienne who spent 6 years in the hit Off-Broadway show Tony & Tina's Wedding as Bridesmaid Marina Gallino. In January of 2000, she released her debut CD, So Many Pieces of Me, which features twelve original compositions. Three of the songs from that CD can be heard in the independent feature film In Passing, written and directed by Kate Fitzgerald. From 1992 through 1997, Maria also worked for the Center for Family Life in Brooklyn, where she taught improvisational acting, vocals, and creative writing for in-school and after-school programs. She also wrote over 30 songs for their original productions. One of these, La Bodega, was performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in the spring of 1997. The title song is featured on Maria's first CD.

Maria has worked with Simply Elementary since 1998, performing for schools all over the tri-state area. She recently co-wrote the book and theme song for one of their new educational workshops. Maria can be seen every Monday and Friday night at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ), New York's legendary cabaret and piano bar. At the Duplex, she and co-writer Susan Campanaro had very successful runs with the original show "The B is Broke," and its sequel "The B Don't Come Here Anymore." Maria has completed her second CD of original songs, entitled That... Which is Real. One of the tracks off the album, "I'd Rather Never Know" was nominated for 2005 MAC Song of the Year, and another, "Kindness Makes Me Cry," was named 2004 MAC song of the year! Another composition, "If I Was a Boy" (co-written with Caren Cole), was nominated for 2003 MAC song of the year. Maria will be performing one of her songs at the show.

Performers scheduled to appear are Lennie Watts, Alice Frazier, Jay Rogers, Francesca Amari, Bruce Clough, Michael Brill, Esther Beckman, Rob Langeder, Karen Saunders, Karen Oberlin, Ruben Flores and one of NYCs favorites, Sue Matsuki (who is helping us with the program planning). Steven Ray Watkins will serve this year as musical director. David Pellegrene will be at the piano before the start of the show, starting around 6:00 pm as attendees are being seated.

Tickets for the 17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW FOR CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) are $35, but if you rejoin as a 2007-2008 Member the ticket price drops to $25. IMPORTANT NEWS FROM/ABOUT CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE

SIDEBAR AD SALE EXTENDED TO JULY 14th - 1 WEEK FREE WITH 3 PAID
You can advertise your show, your CD, your website or even yourself with a home-page side-bar ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website for less than $19 per week - and your ad will be seen by as many as 6000 viewers each day (based on our latest readership statistics). In fact the square 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch ad is the perfect size to show off your CD! Cost is $25 per week for the first three weeks, and the 4th week is free (no discounts on Side-Bar ads). There are a few rules, and there is a limit as well. Only 5 home-page side-bar ads can run each week and ads must be paid for in advance via PayPal. Of course they must relate to cabaret, and I reserve the right to reject any ad for any reason. The ad will appear only on the opening page of the website - at the top of the right hand column. They will be displayed top-to-bottom in the order paid for (do not send payment until you receive a PayPal invoice - this will avoid my having to make a refund if all slots are already sold out. Side-bar deal only through Saturday, July 14th, 2007. To read details, specs and see sample side-bar ads, go to http://svhamstra.com/BannerAdSale2007.shtml

HERE & THERE
It has been a full week since the last issue, and we have a lot of news items to catch up with - and not a whole lot of time this morning to write about them all. You see, I overslept! I awoke at 7:30 am instead of my usual 6:30 am. I have been so busy with brain work" over the long weekend, and when I was finally able to relax last night I guess all my inner wake-up alarms got turned off. I am still a bit groggy after two cups of coffee and a bowl of Raisin Bran!

Over the weekend I completely reorganized the membership recording system by transferring all the names from 2006-2007 to a new style database. In so doing, I discovered so many errors and omissions I could weep! Of the nearly 400 names from last membership year, about 100 had wrong or out of date information. Every new member will receive a special e-mail as they join listing the information I have on file, and asking them to fill in or correct anything missing or wrong. Of the 68 members who joined for the new year, 17 have already written back with corrections. One address I had on file has been wrong for 3 years!

But the new system will enable me to send e-mails, print and mail membership cards (including address labels) and create member information for the website all in one operation (before there were three separate database systems involved). It all had to be done by hand, but fortunately only needed to be done once.

At the same time I have been busy all weekend filling ticket orders for the 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY.

Here is what may be a final reminder: if you have not yet purchased your ticket to the 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, to be held starting around 6:00 pm on Friday July 6th at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ), please note that there are less only 2 seats left! A few more might become available, since four or five tickets were ordered weeks ago and have not yet been paid for - I am sending another e-mail to the purchasers later today warning that unpaid ticket reservations will be cancelled soon and the tickets release for sale to others.

I have planned a festive night, so I hope that if you are in town that weekend (its the 4th of July 5-day weekend), you will be able to attend. But you better hurry - only a few seats remain.

Tickets are $35, but if you renew as a 2007-2008 member at the same time, you need to pay only $20 per ticket - a $15 savings. (SILVER membership/ticket combo is just $40 total - GOLD membership/ticket combo is just $95.) Tickets must be purchased through the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - the METROPOLITAN ROOM is not accepting reservations for this event. For information and a ticket order form, just go to http://www.svhamstra.com/NewsCH07070517th1.shtml

The CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY is sponsored in part by Jenna Esposito (http://www.jennaesposito.com/ ), Rob Langeder (http://www.roblangeder.com/ ), Suzanne Carrico (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/ ), Julian Yeo (http://www.julianyeo.com/ ), Eric Michael Gillett (http://www.ericmichaelgillett.com/ ) and Matt Leahy (http://www.mattleahy.com/ )

Which brings us to our next topic. All 2006-2007 memberships expire on July 5th, 2007 - no matter what date they were purchased. There are two main reasons for this. First, with nearly 400 memberships to keep track of (CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is strictly a one-person operation), it would be impossible to offer memberships that expire on different dates throughout the year. Secondly, during the summer months, banner advertising just about disappears. Simply to keep our bills paid I need to run at the very minimum 10 banners on the website each week. Currently there are far only 7 paid banners running. Some weeks in July and August, the number of paid banners ordered falls to just three!

So we try to make up the income shortfall by scheduling our annual BIRTHDAY PARTY in July as well as the membership renewals. This system was started in 2001 at the suggestion of several friends I consulted, including the late Dottie Burman, who we will be honoring on July 6th with a Songwriter Award in her name. 116 current members (over 25%) are CHARTER members, having renewed their membership each year since 2001!

I hope that you will rejoin as a 2007-2008 member in the next few weeks and support our efforts to promote the art and the artists of cabaret all over the world. For many performers, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE has been the only publication to regularly publish news and reviews about their shows. Since we began publishing in 1990 as the only publication to cover cabaret exclusively, thousands of cabaret performers have been supported in their art through our efforts. As the first website to cover cabaret exclusively, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE continues to provide up to date news about the world of cabaret to over 6000 daily visitors. Our bi-weekly newsletter goes out to nearly 2500 subscribers. We are proud of our work - and recognize, with sincere appreciation, that this has only been possible through the faithful support of our members and advertisers.

You can read all about memberships - the benefits, levels, etc., on the website by clicking on the button at the top of every page marked "JOIN HERE". There is even a procedure by which you can pay by a credit card (and maybe rack up a few frequent flier miles or some dollar points). Of if you wish, just reply to this e-mail with a renewal request (let me know if you want a $25 SILVER, $75 GOLD, or $250 or more SPECIAL membership renewal) and I will send you a PayPal "invoice" which you can use to pay using a credit card or can print out and mail with your check.

Folks running banner ads for the next few weeks get an added bonus: their banners are bing displayed about 2 to 3 times more than normally - with only 7 paid banners running instead of the usual 10 to 15, they get double display time. And this is why we have our membership renewal time in July - we need to sign up new and renewing members to make up for the usual drop off in banner advertising in June, July & August. All current members will be receiving a reminder this weekend that memberships expire for the 2006-2007 membership year on July 5th. You can help us keep our bills paid by joining or rejoining in the next few weeks.

I am really happy that the tickets to the birthday bash are nearly sold out - now I can divert all my attention to the details of the party and cease the "publicity" phase (and avoid having to spend a few hundred dollars printing and mailing fliers!). A big thank you to all the folks who will be taking part for helping sell those seats. Everyone is performing free of charge, and I know those attending will see a terrific show. Special thanks to Sue Matsuki for letting me share ideas with her and her amazing suggestions have been most welcome.

I am also so excited to be honoring Maria Gentile as recipient of our first DOTTIE BURMAN SONGWRITER AWARD. This was a really touch decision, folks. I started with over a dozen names, narrowed it down to four, and then asked for comments from a number of cabaret friends who are about as passionate about songwriters as I am. I guess what finally tipped the scales for me was reading Maria's bio on her website - see the lead article at the top of this issue. Not only does Maria share Dottie's love for songwriting and performing, she also shares Dottie's dedication to mentoring, teaching, using music and song to inspire others. The late Dottie Burman was an important part of my life since CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE began - she even wrote an inspirational column in the early print issues on "following your dreams" in performance. I am intent on keeping Dottie's name and songs alive.

As I was lying awake last night lining up my thoughts for today's issue, an interesting thought came to mind: It seems the news media, and I guess the public, are far more interested in saving a pair of whales in California - spending countless dollars, I am sure, to persuade the beasts to go somewhere they apparently don't want to go - then they are about the two homeless men that sleep in the park across the street from my new apartment. Since moving to Manhattan from Queens I have been appalled by the number of homeless people in the subways, in the parks and on the streets. I realize that there is no simple solution, but I also know that there must be a better way.

I am tired of waiting for an official press release (promised over two weeks ago). So, here's the word that everyone has known but no one wants to confirm: HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/ ) is closing at the end of June. I have been given several stories - it will reopen in the fall after renovations; it will reopen under a new name; it has been sold; the cabaret room will reopen but the restaurant will be run by someone else; the space will be converted to a gay Irish bar; etc. But the sum of all this is that the club will close at the end of June. (Silence, as I wait for the next shoe to drop.)

On the plus side, Bob Egan writes that on July 3rd, he will open his new cabaret: BOB EGAN'S COSMOPOLITAN CLUB AT THE NEW HOPE INN (6426 Lower York Road, New Hope, PA - 215-862-5221 - http://www.thecosmopolitanclub.com/ ). Bob writes: "Right now, we're in the process of building and redesigning what will be an absolutely beautiful room. This entirely new performance space will debut with one of cabaret's top entertainers, Ann Hampton Callaway, with performances Tuesday through Thursday, July 3rd, 4th & 5th, at 8:00 pm ($35 cover, $10 food/drink minimum - reservations by credit card being taken at the number above 24 hours a day). The new website is under construction, but will be up shortly. I will announce a full slate of entertainment in the coming weeks, so bookmark the new website now and check back regularly!"

News flash from Bonnie Weiss, cabaret reviewer/producer/director: "Cabaret, Jazz & Musical Theatre Recording Artists & Songwriters: Learn how you can get your talent out there - locally, nationally and internationally, be featured along side award winning performers, be well paid for your work, and more. The Digital Revolution now levels the playing field. To learn more, join our special conference call on Monday, June 4th at 10:00 pm Eastern, 7:00 pm Pacific. Call: 1-507-726-3200 Access Code: 8888#. If you cannot make the conference call, please contact me for a schedule of future calls, and for more information about this company that truly empowers the creative artist."

Seen on West 46th Street last week: Danny Nak, formerly owner of DANNY'S SKYLIGHT ROOM, looking quite relaxed and happy and chatting with a few "suits" - could they have been real estate reps? Is Danny Nak seeking a new location on Restaurant Row? Ominous side note for lovers of Russian cuisine: he was standing on the sidewalk one door over from the empty-most-nights FIREBIRD. I told him he "owed me an exclusive" and he just smiled and winked. Stay tuned.

"Once in a Blue Moon" is a common way of saying not very often. According to the popular definition, it is the second Full Moon to occur in a single calendar month. The average interval between Full Moons is about 29.5 days, whilst the length of an average month is roughly 30.5 days. On average, there will be 41 months that have two Full Moons in every century, so you could say that once in a Blue Moon actually means once every two-and-a-half years. Here in the USA we are experiencing a "Blue Moon" - the first on May 2nd and the second today, May 31st (most of the rest of the world has their pairing on June 1st and June 30th. So HAPPY BLUE MOON, everyone!

We have a lot more stuff to say on a lot of topics near the bottom of this newsletter that you might want to check out as well.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.

By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website).

IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

Your membership donations support this publication and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. If you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and would like to support us, why not join as a supporting member? Your donation is most important to me, not just to pay for my food, cable, phone, DSL and rent, etc., but also as a confirmation of your appreciation. Can you please help?

For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, just click on the JOIN HERE button on the website. You can even make your membership donation by credit card, using PayPal. If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your membership donations make this all possible.

Today I ended up with far more news than time, so if your item does not appear in this issue, it may appear on the website in the next few days - and then be included in the Monday issue. Thanks again for everyone's support for the 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY show - last year we had about 1 dozen tickets left just one week before the show. This year, with more than a month to go, there are only a handful of seats left. Thanks to you all!

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
