The songs of Jerry Herman, composer and lyricist of some of Broadway's most memorable shows, will be celebrated in the musical revue, I Am What I Am from Thursday through Sunday, June 8th through 10th, and the Tony Award-winning collaboration of composer, John Kander, and lyricist, Fred Ebb, will be saluted in City Lights from Thursday through Sunday, June 15th through 17th. In "City Lights," Musical Director Beckie Menzie, along with KT McCammond, Tom Michael, Daryl Nitz, Suzanne Petri, Kat' Taylor, Bradford Thacker, Denise Tomasello and Robert Whorton will celebrate the music of the legendary Broadway team, Kander and Ebb with songs from Cabaret, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Chicago, The Rink and more.

CCP (Chicago Cabaret Professionals - http://www.chicagocabaret.org/ ) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization of performers, producers, writers, directors, venues, composers, lyricists, founded in 1998 and dedicated to the Art of Cabaret. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

ONLY FOUR SEATS LEFT FOR 17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW!
If you have not yet ordered your tickets for the 17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW FOR CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) on July 6th only went on sale around the 1st of May, but already 96 of the 100 available seats have been sold! If you want to join us at the party, you better act quickly.

Tickets are $35, but if you rejoin as a 2007-2008 Member the ticket price drops to $25. But wait! There is even more: If you join and pay for a ticket and a membership at the same time, the cost is $20 for the ticket and $20 for a SILVER or $75 for a GOLD membership - $40 or $95 COMBO price (saves you $15!) (the club's standard 2-beverage minimum - not included in the ticket price - applies).

Just go to the website and click on the line that says CABARET HOTLINE'S 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY TICKETS ON SALE NOW! Then follow the link to the ticket order form - it should be pretty clear as to what to do. Then sit back and wait for a PayPal invoice/conformation - I don't want you to send in a payment unless I actually have a seat for you. When you receive the invoice/confirmation, send in your payment - your reservation is not considered valid until your payment is received.

THERE WILL BE NO WAITING LIST SEATS AVAILABLE AT THE CLUB THE DAY OF THE SHOW - those without tickets should not come to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on the 6th to see if there were any "no shows" - we will not be able to sell any tickets that day even if there are seats available.

I have booked some really great performers for this year's show - some newcomers along with some of the top names in cabaret. Scheduled to appear are multi-award winning Lennie Watts, the delightful Alice Frazier from Erie PA, 2007 MAC & BISTRO Award winner Jay Rogers, Francesca Amari from Michigan, Bruce Clough - popular in theater & cabaret in Philadelphia, 2007 MAC STANDUP COMEDY Award winner Michael Brill, 2007 MAC AWARD FEMALE & MALE DEBUT winners Esther Beckman & Rob Langeder, the legendary Karen Saunders, acclaimed vocalist Karen Oberlin, international stage/TV/cabaret singer/dance Ruben Flores and one of NYCs favorites, Sue Matsuki (who is helping us with the program planning). Steven Ray Watkins will serve as musical director. Piano-bar entertainer David Pellegrene will be at the piano before the start of the show, starting around 6:00 pm, to add a note of festivity to the evening as attendees are being seated.

An important part of the show will be the presentation of the 2007 JEFF MATSON AWARDS, created to honor the memory of songwriter/writer/director/producer/graphic designer Jeff Matson. In 2005 the first award was presented to D.C. Anderson, and last year's recipients were Trudi Mann and Hector Coris (who will both be attending the show). This year we will honor two more very worthy recipients. Each has been an inspiration, a resource and a good friend to cabaret performers: Collette Black (booking manager UPSTAIRS at ROSE'S TURN) and Joe Regan, Jr. (best friend a cabaret performer could have). Joe has even offered to perform at the show! In addition, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will present our first DOTTIE BURMAN award, to be given to singer/actor/teacher/songwriter Maria Gentile, who will perform one of her songs.

I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible will attend the party. This just might be the last time we have such an affair, so try not to miss it. METROPOLITAN ROOM manager Lennie Watts and owners Chris & Steve Mazzilli have been totally helpful in making sure that it will truly be a festive and memorable occasion.

If you cannot attend the event - or have an upcoming event after July 6th that you wish to promote, or want to congratulate Colette or Joe, you might want to run an ad in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY program book (1/6 page for $25 - SPACE IS LIMITED - 6 1/2 PAGES ALREADY SOLD!). For more information and to reserve your ad slot, go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml

HERE & THERE
"Rainy days and Mondays always get me down," as the song says. But what happens when it rains and it is a Monday? And what happens when the weather person says it will rain into Thursday? Good thin I have an "indoor job!"

But there is no reason to be feeling blue here in NYC today - if you are a cabaret fan - despite the rain! Just look at all the choices we have tonight:

Tom Andersen, in a rare solo show, and singing Broadway show tunes (which he rarely does) at HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/ ) at 7:00 pm as part of the "Breast in Show" Benefit. (Tomorrow night Mark Nadler at 9:30 pm)

Brandon Cutrell with the release of his first CD (self titled as they say) at FEINSTEIN'S at the Regency Hotel (540 Park Avenue, NYC - 212-339-4095 - http://www.feinsteinsattheregency.com/ ) at 8:30 pm.

Opening Doors Theatre Company presents JUST FOR FUN(DS)! - the first major fundraising event for the company - tonight (through Wednesday) at 7:00 pm at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ). Proceeds from the show will go towards next season's productions.

Jim Caruso and Friends - one man show plus (some of the top names in cabaret & Broadway included) at 7:00 pm at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - http://www.birdlandjazz.com/ ). (followed by Jim's CAST PARTY open-mic show).

Amy Wolk who "Wolks It Out" at 7:00 pm tonight at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) followed by Broadway's Devin Richards at 9:30 pm.

A new comedy/variety show premiers at UPSTAIRS AT ROSE'S TURN (55 Grove Street, NYC - 1-212-366-5438 - http://www.rosesturn.com/ ) at 8:00 pm hosted by Danny Leary.

Galt MacDermot, the legendary composer of "Hair," opens his series of June Monday night shows tonight at 7:00 pm at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/theater/schedule).

I am sure there's more cabaret going on here in town tonight as well, and whenever I write something like this I get e-mails from folks around the country and around the world who find themselves frustrated that they don't have these choices in their towns. I agree, we have an abundance of cabaret in this town, with about a dozen rooms presenting shows several to seven nights a week. Here's my theory - the more rooms presenting cabaret, the more interest in cabaret on the part of the community. That is why it is so sad when a cabaret room closes.

But keep in mind, the recent room closings and closing announcements have not been due to a lessening of interest in cabaret in this town. The big problem is that NYC is booming, real estate prices have skyrocketed, an so have rents and operating costs. Unemployment in NYC is at its lowest point in many years, which puts upward pressure on wages as well. Cabaret had its birth at a period of depression, unemployment and despair - can it survive prosperity and plenty?

As is mentioned elsewhere, right now we have just 4 tickets left to sell for the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY to be held starting around 6:00 pm (showtime at 7:00 pm) at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ). Actually, on Friday night we had NO seats left, but there were a number of ticket orders unpaid, so I e-mailed everyone on that list and received word back from two persons who had ordered 2 tickets each that they could not attend and cancelled their orders. So, if you thought you were out of luck, here is a second chance. We have great plans for the party, we had some great talent lined up, and best of all you will be able to network with fellow performers and/or cabaret fans in an evening of fun and celebration. Three "awards" will be given at the show - the JEFF MATSON AWARD to Joe Regan Jr. and Collette Black, and the new DOTTIE BURMAN SONGWRITER AWARD to Maria Gentile. We will raffle of a host of CDs, there will be a teddy bear auction of sorts, and lots more fun and surprises. Just go to the website and click on the large yellow side-bar ad announcing the show. That will take you to all the latest details and a ticket order form.

Very important - tell your friends: THERE WILL BE NO WAITING LIST SEATS AVAILABLE AT THE CLUB THE DAY OF THE SHOW - those without tickets should not come to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on the 6th to see if there were any "no shows" - we will not be able to sell any tickets that day even if there are seats available.

Talk about a chance to network, look at the cabaret performers who have purchased tickets to the party on July 6th (in no particular order): Jim Van Slyke, Marty Geiger, Evy Scheff, Hector Coris, Cynthia Crane, Bobbie Horowitz, Jenna Esposito, Clark Warren, Laura Hull, Francesca Blumenthal, Suzanne Carrico, Joanne Mosca, Trudi Mann, Margaret Wright, Ejaye Tracy, Jim Speake, Tracy Stark, Jackie Fornatale, Scot Albertson, Gretchen Reinhagen, Teresa Fischer, Claiborne Cary, Lucille Carr-Kaffashan, Jo-Ann Zacceralli, Mitch Kahn, Rock Albers, Julie Miller, Nina Grand, Miles Phillips, Julie Razor, Gerta Grunen, Carol Sherlin, Sheldon Forrest, Esther Beckman, Linda Amiel Burns, Tennie Leonard, Jeanne MacDonald, Scott Barbarino, Michael Colby, Chuck Prentiss, Edie Cohen and more! And in addition, some of there folks are bringing guest who may be performers as well!

More news from New Hope, PA, where BOB EGAN'S COSMOPOLITAN CLUB AT THE NEW HOPE INN (6426 Lower York Road, New Hope, PA - 215-862-5221 - http://www.thecosmopolitanclub.com/ ) opens on Tuesday, July 3rd at 8:00 pm with Ann Hampton Callaway (also appearing on the 4th & 5th). Laura Hull & Rio Clemente will be performing in the cabaret room on the 7th of July, followed by Baby Jane Dexter on the 14th and Tommy Femia is "Judy Garland Live!" on the 20th & 21st. Rumored as soon to be announced: Sharon McNight!

Say it isn't so, Ricky & Leslie! Only 4 more chances to see the award-winning "Johnny Mercer A-Z" show at HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/ ) on Wednesday nights at 10:00 pm! This show started a few years ago at DILLON'S and in various versions played at MAMA ROSE'S, THE ENCORE, DON'T TELL MAMA, ROSE'S TURN and even somewhere in Florida, if I recall correctly. The duo also made a CD called "Cool Cool" which is available on CDBaby and iTunes. Now, with HELEN'S closing at the end of June, and unless they find a new room, the trombone, the gong (or was that a frying pan) and the Mercer charts will be packed away somewhere in New Jersey (where old charts go to fade away). No cover. Great fun! Late arrivals welcomed! Guest singers welcomed!

Carol Sherlin, who made her NYC cabaret debut at DON'T TELL MAMA with sold out shows in March and April, went off to London and performed to another enthusiastic house at BATTERSEA BARGE (Riverside Walk, Nine Elms Lane, London - 020 7498 004 - http://www.batterseabarge.com/ ), and also did a guest spot at the "Femmes on the Thames" show the previous week. The Londoners were especially interested in Carol's tales of being a Miss American finalist (complete with crown, which she brought to show). "In America we don't have real royalty, but we do have queens - we have beauty queens, drama queens and drag queens" she said "and I will let you guess which one of the three I was."

The legendary Julie Wilson has been invited be a guest of honor at the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY - Julie will be making her METROPOLITAN ROOM debut with a brand new show on Wednesday, June 13th at 8:00 pm, appearing Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8:00 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) through the 23rd of June. You are urged to see this cabaret icon in performance - an event you will never forget! Incredible!

I have another special announcement to make - just waiting for a final confirmation, so that will have to wait until Thursday's issue. I see it is 12:30 pm, and time to get this issue out to you all. News items are posted on the website - most times before they are included in the newsletter, so check the website often.

LOOKING FOR BIRTHDAY PROGRAM BOOKLET ADVERTISERS
If you cannot attend the July 6th event you might want to run an ad in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY program book (1/6 page for $25 - SPACE IS LIMITED). Perhaps you have an upcoming event after July 6th that you wish to promote, or want to congratulate our JEFF MATSON award winners, Collette Black and Joe Regan Jr., or simply want to congratulate our newsletter/website for 17 years of serving the cabaret community. A program ad may be just the thing for you! Not only will the booklet be presented to the 100+ folks attending the show, but a pdf of the booklet will be available for download on the website after the 6th of July. For more information and to reserve your ad slot, CLICK HERE: http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them!

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places where the show information can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
