AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

"AFTER DARK WITH JOHN HOGLUND" EXCLUSIVELY ON THE WEBSITE
Over the many years I have known him, John Hoglund has written for about a dozen magazines, from BACK STAGE to THEATER WEEK to PRIVATE LIVES. He has also been a friend and mentor of dozens of cabaret and Broadway performers over the years, and is probably the most popular and respected reviewer/critic on the cabaret scene. He even wrote for the print edition of CABARET HOTLINE for a few years. That is why I am so happy to announce that John will be writing a new "column" for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Called "After Dark with John Hoglund" his articles will be in a special section of the website, and will include, in addition to cabaret and CD reviews, interviews, commentary and news from the live entertainment world (theater, jazz, comedy, cabaret) - wherever his nighttime wanderings take him. The special section is supposed to start on July 1st, but John tells me that he already is writing some items, so it may start earlier. I will announce updates to the section in the newsletter, but "After Dark with John Hoglund" will appear exclusively on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website.

TODAY'S FEATURE STORY

17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW SOLD OUT - I THINK!
If you have not yet ordered your tickets for the 17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW FOR CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) on July 6th you may be too late! As of about 9:00 am, Thursday June 7th, all 100 seats were reserved. Tickets only went on sale around the 1st of May, and we are truly heartened by the support for this venture! But if you wish you had ordered but didn't get around to it, don't lose heart - there may still be a chance. Tickets ordered by not paid for by midnight Monday, June 11th will be cancelled and placed back on sale. 20 tickets remain unpaid as of this morning.

To add your name to the waiting list for possible cancellations, just go to the website and click on the line that says CABARET HOTLINE'S 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY TICKETS ON SALE NOW! Then follow the link to the ticket order form - it should be pretty clear as to what to do. I don't want you to send in a payment unless I actually have a seat for you. If a ticket becomes available, you will receive a PayPal Invoice/Confirmation. When you receive the invoice/confirmation, send in your payment - your reservation is not considered valid until your payment is received.

THERE WILL BE NO WAITING LIST SEATS AVAILABLE AT THE CLUB THE DAY OF THE SHOW - those without tickets should not come to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on the 6th to see if there were any "no shows" - we will not be able to sell any tickets that day even if there are seats available.

Tickets are $35, but if you rejoin as a 2007-2008 Member the ticket price drops to $25. But wait! There is even more: If you join and pay for a ticket and a membership at the same time, the cost is $20 for the ticket and $20 for a SILVER or $75 for a GOLD membership - $40 or $95 COMBO price (saves you $15!) (the club's standard 2-beverage minimum - not included in the ticket price - applies).

I have booked some really great performers for this year's show - some newcomers along with some of the top names in cabaret. Scheduled to appear are multi-award winning Lennie Watts, the delightful Alice Frazier from Erie PA, 2007 MAC & BISTRO Award winner Jay Rogers, Francesca Amari from Michigan, Bruce Clough - popular in theater & cabaret in Philadelphia, 2007 MAC STANDUP COMEDY Award winner Michael Brill, 2007 MAC AWARD FEMALE & MALE DEBUT winners Esther Beckman & Rob Langeder, the legendary Karen Saunders, acclaimed vocalist Karen Oberlin, international stage/TV/cabaret singer/dance Ruben Flores and one of NYCs favorites, Sue Matsuki (who is helping us with the program planning). Steven Ray Watkins will serve as musical director. Piano-bar entertainer David Pellegrene will be at the piano before the start of the show, starting around 6:00 pm, to add a note of festivity to the evening as attendees are being seated.

An important part of the show will be the presentation of the 2007 JEFF MATSON AWARDS, created to honor the memory of songwriter/writer/director/producer/graphic designer Jeff Matson. In 2005 the first award was presented to D.C. Anderson, and last year's recipients were Trudi Mann and Hector Coris (who will both be attending the show). This year we will honor two more very worthy recipients. Each has been an inspiration, a resource and a good friend to cabaret performers: Collette Black (booking manager UPSTAIRS at ROSE'S TURN) and Joe Regan, Jr. (best friend a cabaret performer could have). Joe has even offered to perform at the show! In addition, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will present our first DOTTIE BURMAN award, to be given to singer/actor/teacher/songwriter Maria Gentile, who will perform one of her songs.

I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible will attend the party. This just might be the last time we have such an affair, so try not to miss it. METROPOLITAN ROOM manager Lennie Watts and owners Chris & Steve Mazzilli have been totally helpful in making sure that it will truly be a festive and memorable occasion.

If you cannot attend the event - or have an upcoming event after July 6th that you wish to promote, or want to congratulate Colette or Joe, you might want to run an ad in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY program book (1/6 page for $25 - SPACE IS LIMITED - 6 PAGES ALREADY SOLD!). For more information and to reserve your ad slot, go to http://www.svhamstra.com/thankyou1prog.shtml

The CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY is sponsored in part by Jenna Esposito (http://www.jennaesposito.com/ ), Rob Langeder (http://www.roblangeder.com/ ), Suzanne Carrico (http://www.suzannecarrico.com/ ), Julian Yeo (http://www.julianyeo.com/ ), Eric Michael Gillett (http://www.ericmichaelgillett.com/ ) and Matt Leahy (http://www.mattleahy.com/ )

You can advertise your show, your CD, your website or even yourself with a home-page side-bar ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website for less than $19 per week - and your ad will be seen by as many as 6000 viewers each day (based on our latest readership statistics). In fact the square 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch ad is the perfect size to show off your CD! Cost is $25 per week for the first three weeks, and the 4th week is free (no discounts on Side-Bar ads). There are a few rules, and there is a limit as well. Only 5 home-page side-bar ads can run each week and ads must be paid for in advance via PayPal. Of course they must relate to cabaret, and I reserve the right to reject any ad for any reason. The ad will appear only on the opening page of the website - at the top of the right hand column. They will be displayed top-to-bottom in the order paid for (do not send payment until you receive a PayPal invoice - this will avoid my having to make a refund if all slots are already sold out.

Side-bar deal only through Saturday, July 14th, 2007. BANNER MUST START BY SUNDAY JUNE 10th. To read details, specs and see sample side-bar ads, go to http://svhamstra.com/BannerAdSale2007.shtml

HERE & THERE
Please excuse any typos, incomplete sentences, misspelled names and places, and other errors in this issue - it has been that kind of a week. Hopefully things will calm down around here and get back to normal (normal in my world means moderate chaos). If you have not seen the item I posted on the message board, here's what happened on Tuesday morning (June 5th):

I awoke Tuesday morning and, as is my habit, first went to the computer to check any important e-mails received overnight. Amazingly there were only a few. So I clicked on the website to check the message board and to my horror, the website was down - apparently because I had neglected to renew my URL registration.

What? I webmaster three websites and for every one I get notices months in advance regarding renewals. But this time there was no warning! I called my service provider. They had my records showing site registration was covered through May 30, 2008 so naturally they never sent a reminder (they later admitted it was a data entry error)/

I called the domain registration company and they said the site expired May 30, 2007. I have had the site registered through them since 1997. So apparently all the information, password, e-mail address, mailing address, etc. in their files were from 1997 and never updated. I have been renewing early online every three years online so there was no need to enter any of that stuff.

But now, because the registration expired (they had been sending notices to a 1997 no-linger-used e-mail address so I never received notification) I needed to supply proof that the site really was mine. Nothing I told them to prove my identity matched the information they had on file. I had changed my password several times over the years, and had no clue as to the correct one. And in 1997 they did not require "the last 4 digits of my Social Security number, so there was no way to check that. The only other way to renew, they said, was to fax them copies of two forms of ID - one valid, State Issued Photo ID and the other a copy of a recent utility bill.

But it gets worse...

Guess what - my photo ID had expired 3 years ago and so they could not accept that as proof. But they were kind enough to extend the registration 15 days until they received my fax, and told me all should be well "within 24 hours."

No, there's more. When I went to Motor Vehicle to get my State ID card renewed. they said they needed my Social Security Card as proof of ID (even though I had the expired card with my photo on it). I can't find my Social Security Card. So I go to the Social Security office. After showing them several proofs of ID (the expired State ID card was not acceptable) they will be sending me a new one - coming within 7 days. Then I have to go back to MV. Then wait for them to mail me the new ID card. Then I need to find somewhere to send fax (who uses a fax these days anyway?) and hopefully all of this can be done within the 15 days!

So, after spending all morning on the phone and all afternoon going hither and yon waiting in line, filling out forms and riding busses (would you believe, in the middle of the mess one bus actually broke down so we had to wait for the next bus?!), I lost an entire day - usually the day I take care of grocery shopping, doing laundry, etc. By 4:00 pm the website came back up and the e-mails started pouring in.

By the way, if you are on AOL, the website may have taken longer to come up. You see, what you see in your AOL website browser is several hours old - AOL has a copy of my website (and every website) on their own computers which they update periodically - saves them a lot of money on connection charges. One person reported to me that on AOL the website was still down on Wednesday morning! Another reason to quit AOL!

So, because of the above, this issue is shorter than usual, and there have been fewer new news items posted on the website than normally. I hope to play "catch up" over the weekend and Monday's issue should be longer than usual.

I saw one of the most fantastic shows of the year-to-date at the opening night of the "BREAST IN SHOW" benefit on June 4th at HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/ ). It was Tom Andersen's first solo cabaret show in several years, and the first time that Tom has presented a show of all-Broadway! Absolutely incredible - this show cries out for a repeat performance run! James Followell was at the piano, another first for Tom. John Hoglund was in the room, and I am begging him to make this his first review in the new "After Dark with John Hoglund" on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. Bravo, Mr. Andersen! Please do this show again - and again, and again.

The series is presented by MacAnn Music, Helen's, Raise the Bar Productions and Diane Trinkaus (an 18 year breast cancer survivor!) to benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF - http://www.bcrfcure.org/ ). Shows are Monday and Tuesday nights in June feature one or more of cabaret's brightest talents, many of whom are multiple award-winning performers. The shows begin at 7:00 pm. Scheduled to appear on Monday June 11th are Carolyn Montgomery, Brian Gens and Steven Wing and Tuesday the 12th Colm Reilly. If you have a mom, a sister, an aunt, a niece, a female cousin, a lady friend, a wife, and/or a daughter, you owe it to them and to their good health to support this cause. There is a $25 tax-deductible donation and a $15 food/beverage minimum. SEE FULL STORY ON THE WEBSITE at http://www.svhamstra.com/NewsNYC070626Breast.shtml

Fans of Trudi Mann's Sunday Brunch for Singers will be overjoyed to hear that Trudi has found a new location for these renowned open-mic events. Starting this Sunday, June 10th, Trudi & Co, will be settling in at BUTTERFIELD EIGHT RESTAURANT (5 East 38th Street, NYC - 212-679-0646 - http://butterfield8nyc.com/ ). Open mic is from 1:00 to 5:00 pm, and there is no cover. The minimum has not been set (will be more than $10, but the food at this place is top-rated). Gordon Webster will be at the piano with Saadi Zain on bass - be sure to take along at least 2 extra copies of your music.

Here's an update for fans of Jerry Scott: Jerry is taking a little hiatus, with the ending of his gig at NINO'S, but he is still doing brunch every Sunday at RUBY FRUIT (531 Hudson Street, NYC - 212-929-3343 - http://www.rubyfruitnyc.com/ ) from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Jerry will also be performing on Friday nights June 8th and 15th at CATERINA'S (316 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-355-5360 - http://cabaretusa.com/_wsn/page2.html ) from 7:30 to 11:30 pm. He will be spending the last two weeks of August in Cherry Grove, Fire Island at The Tides.

Those attending the 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) on July 6th will also be able to purchase raffle tickets - every performer in the show who has a CD available, will bring one along to be raffled off after their section of the show! But wait, there's more: I have personally chosen my 10 favorite CDs of the past (older than 2 years) and have asked the performers on the CDs to send in an autographed copy. Some of these CDs are hard to find, and might even be "collector's items" by this time. All 10 will be awarded in one package! Here is my list, in no particular order (OK, if you are observant you will see they are in alphabetical order by artist):

Tom Andersen - WHO KNOWS
Lisa Asher - LET THE MYSTERY BE
Scott Coulter - SCOTT COULTER
John dePalma - THE SONG IS MINE
David Friedman - LISTEN TO MY HEART (cast album)
Sue Matsuki - A NEW TAKE
Carolyn Montgomery - REVEILLE
Wesla Whitfield - SEPTEMBER SONGS
Denise Whittier - STORY SONGS
Beckie Menzie - REAL EMOTIONAL GIRL

If we have a party next year, I will have a new list - and cover my more recent favorites.

We have a lot more stuff to say on a lot of topics but I have run out of time. More on Monday!

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.

By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website).

IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

Your membership donations support this publication and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. If you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and would like to support us, why not join as a supporting member? Your donation is most important to me, not just to pay for my food, cable, phone, DSL and rent, etc., but also as a confirmation of your appreciation. Can you please help?

For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, just click on the JOIN HERE button on the website. You can even make your membership donation by credit card, using PayPal. If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your membership donations make this all possible.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
