HERE & THERE
I'm sort of running out of news! I almost completely emptied my "news
bin" of press releases. I have two or three items that were received
in the past few days that if I want to add them I will have to do
a lot of research - taking up time I don't have. For example, one
item does not mention the musicians - not even a musical director
or pianist (a lot of folks seem to forget to mention their musicians
in their releases). Another lists an obscure venue with no address,
reservation phone number or even the website of the club that would
have that information. So to run the item I have to do some "googling"
to complete. I have to skip at least a half-dozen items a week for
incomplete information! Worst is when I simply receive a jpg of a
flier - many times about a show that really should be publicized -
but who has the time to unravel all the info on a flier - and then
"google" around to compose a more detailed article?
Just as well, actually. You see, besides working on all the arrangements
for the party on July 6th, and writing the bi-weekly newsletter, and
keeping the website up to date, and attending cabaret shows and events,
and answering e-mail questions, I am also writing a book. I was approached
by a publisher who asked if I was interested in writing a tome about
cabaret and my interest was aroused. I have mentioned this before,
and actually submitted a few sketchy ideas to the publisher - they
are looking for sort of a "tell all" - not the usually glossed over,
"gilded" kind of cabaret reporting.
Well, I had no idea how much work this involves! First
I made a "timeline" or outline, dividing my cabaret experiences
(tentative title is "The Cabaret Chronicles") and knowledge into
sections, each marked by a significant event - either within or
external to cabaret - that marked a change in the art and its presentation.
Well, there have been so many "significant" events, I had to sort
of choose "ultra-significant" and then "not as significant" so as
not to have too many chapters.
The deal is that we include a few chapters - not necessarily
in any chronology - on the website to see "how they fly." The first
one to be published - sort of significant to June - will be how
the events of Stonewall influenced the direction of cabaret. Hopefully
it will be completed by the 24th.
So I actually took the time to sit down and watch the "final" episode
of "The Sopranos" last night. There was so much hype, so much talk,
and several of my friends are such die-hard fans, I figured it was
"now or never." Most interesting to me actually, was the "backgrounds"
of the scenes. I was born and raised in New Jersey, and not only drove
my own car about 50,000 miles a year going hither and yon in the area,
I also drove a limousine for several years running up about 200,000
miles a year on the streets and highways of New York and New Jersey.
I lived one town over from Lodi. So when they stopped the camera long
enough to get a look at the scenery, I was totally involved with trying
to recognize where it was shot. Such fun. Not being familiar with
any of the story line, the actual episode seemed disjointed and confusing.
Sort of like reading a single chapter of a Russian classic novel.
For a moment or two I actually had an inspiration
on how to complete this issue of the newsletter: just stop writing
mid-sentence somewhere and sending it off. What a bummer it must
of been for dedicated fans when the show ended last night!
And now this issue must go on its way - and I must do my laundry!
Just realized it am down to my last pair of socks. There was a time
when if this happened I would run to the store and buy another package
of socks, but then by the time I actually did my laundry the bag was
too heavy to bring to the laundromat. And as I get older, I discover
I cannot lift as large a load as before. Nope, it is laundry day -
no postponing it.
STILL LOOKING FOR BIRTHDAY PROGRAM BOOKLET ADVERTISERS
If you cannot attend the July 6th event you might want to run an ad

after July 6th that you wish to promote, or want to congratulate our
JEFF MATSON award winners, Collette Black and Joe Regan Jr., or simply
want to congratulate our newsletter/website for 17 years of serving
the cabaret community. A program ad may be just the thing for you!
Not only will the booklet be presented to the 100+ folks attending
the show, but a pdf of the booklet will be available for download

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ). How do you get an
item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs,
giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other
cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available.
Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me
a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually
trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before
using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count
them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.
If you don't have a press release, just click here:
http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use
for the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press
release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links
(with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.)
Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one
of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and
lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them!
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please
keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about
their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show
is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also
posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places
where the show information can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
One last reminder - tickets to the 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE are sold out - completely sold out. There is a chance
of cancellations, so you may place you name on the waiting list -
see the website for instructions. Please also remember, THERE WILL
BE NO WAITING LIST SEATS AVAILABLE AT THE CLUB THE DAY OF THE SHOW
- those without tickets should not come to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on
the 6th to see if there were any "no shows" - we will not be able
to sell any tickets that day even if there are seats available.
And that is just about the way it was.
