SAD NEWS - CABARET LOSES TWO OF ITS FINEST
The weekend brought sad news to the cabaret world when it was announced that two of NYCs finest talents, Hope Hardcastle and Thommie Walsh passed away over the weekend.

Hope's longtime and devoted contributions to cabaret are well known. As a director and consultant, she mentored and advised scores of cabaret performers and directed several revues and cabaret performances. She was one of the driving forces in Hearts & Voices, bringing cabaret and music to AIDS hospices and hospital wards. She had been ill for several months, including a hospital stay in London, a city she loved and visited often. Hope was a constant visitor to Danny's Skylight Room and a huge fan of the many fine pianists that played the piano bar - from Danny Apolinar to Jerry Scott. I would often run into her on Restaurant Row, and she always had some news to pass along about one of her cabaret friends.

Thommie is best known for his contributions to the world of Broadway, having originated the role of Bobby in the original CHORUS LINE. He performed and/or choreographed several shows including The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, The 1940's Radio Hour, Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?, Nine, Lunch Hour, and My Favorite Year. He received the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for his work in A Day in Hollywood/ A Night in The Ukraine and My One and Only for which he also received a Tony Award nomination for best direction. However he also mentored and directed several cabaret performers, and was noted for his dedication to the artist - supportive at all times. He was one of the few directors who would personally contact me to urge me to see one of the performers he was directing - and more unique, he always personally contacted me to thank me when I attended.

Because of the short amount of time, and because these two sad occurrences happened over the weekend, details on funeral and other arrangements have not been received by press time.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW SOLD OUT - COMPLETELY SOLD OUT
If you have not yet ordered your tickets for the 17TH BIRTHDAY SHOW FOR CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) on July 6th, you are, for all intents and purposes, too late. All 100 available seats have been sold. Tickets only went on sale around the 1st of May, and were all sold in less than 6 weeks. We are truly heartened by the support for this venture! Tickets ordered but not paid for by midnight tonight will be cancelled and distributed to folks on the waiting list. However, only 3 reservations remain unpaid (all with payment promised to arrive in today's mail) and there are already four ticket orders on the waiting list.

THERE WILL BE NO WAITING LIST SEATS AVAILABLE AT THE CLUB THE DAY OF THE SHOW - those without tickets should not come to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on the 6th to see if there were any "no shows" - we will not be able to sell any tickets that day even if there are seats available.

To add your name to the waiting list for possible cancellations, just go to the website and click on the line that says CABARET HOTLINE'S 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY TICKETS ON SALE NOW! Then follow the link to the ticket order form - it should be pretty clear as to what to do. I don't want you to send in a payment unless I actually have a seat for you. If a ticket becomes available, you will receive a PayPal Invoice/Confirmation. When you receive the invoice/confirmation, send in your payment - your reservation is not considered valid until your payment is received.

HERE & THERE
This issue is a little on the short side, since I actually used up all my "news" items on file through July in the issue last Thursday, so anything new you read in this issue is all that came in over the weekend. One or two items did come in since 11:00 am, but I need to save something for the Thursday issue.

One news item I was hoping to receive isn't here yet - and who knows if it will get here by noon, which I set as the deadline. Of course the news of the passing of Hope Hardcastle and Thommie Walsh over the weekend was new I really did not want to receive. I was at DON'T TELL MAMA on Saturday night for the 9th Anniversary Celebration of Ron Poole's POOLE PARTY, and one of the performers was Nancy McGraw, who appeared on Broadway in NINE, which was choreographed by Thommie Walsh, and working in the cabaret room was Jay Rogers, who was in the show KOOKY TUNES, originally directed by Mr. Walsh. But the show went on (as shows always must), and I doubt anyone outside of a few performers and one or two in the audience were aware of the sadness.

Then on Sunday morning came the news of the passing of Hope Hardcastle, not totally unexpected since Hope had been ailing for some time, and yet it came as a shock. One of the dearest and most beloved people on the cabaret scene for years, she will be so missed!

In my e-mail-box this morning was the very first "AFTER DARK with John Hoglund" article by John Hoglund. You can find it on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - there is a link on the front page, or you can click on the REVIEWS button among the three rows of buttons at the top of the page and follow the links from there. I want to welcome John aboard - he wrote for the print edition of the newsletter several years ago. In his opening article John introduces himself and then goes on to review Tom Andersen's show at HELEN'S and Julie Wilson, currently appearing at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM. Plus he has his own news and gossip section about NYC nightlife. Check it out!

I don't have any "official" word, but those that happened to stop by HELEN'S RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609 - http://www.helensnyc.com/ ) over the weekend probably were shocked to find the place closed with some rather ambiguous signs plastered on the windows. I have been told that someone had neglected to send in some paperwork for a certificate or license that was expiring, and the city forced them to shut down until the proper forms were filed. The club should be open tonight as usual, but knowing full well the way NYC officials work, it might be prudent to phone ahead to make sure.

All cabaret fans and performers should try to see Julie Wilson's new show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) this week (Wednesday through Saturday at 8:00 pm). As Stephen Holden wrote in his rave review in the NEW YORK TIMES last week, "Julie Wilson gave what amounted to a master class in stage presence at the Metropolitan Room!" - and as John Hoglund writes in his exclusive CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE review, "The first lady of cabaret still has no peers when it comes to the art of cabaret performing and interpreting a song for all its worth!" I will add my own "rave" to the list: "THE MUST SEE show of 2007. Julie Wilson is a treasure!"

I sent out over 500 e-mails over the weekend regarding the new membership year of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE that will begin on July 6th, in tandem with our 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY. Nearly 150 folks have already signed up as new or renewed members. Your membership donation will help us make it through the summer months, when traditionally revenue from banner advertising drops by 60% or more. I hope you will find it in your heart to join this year. The base membership level (SILVER) is just $20 - less than $2 a month - and your donations make it possible to maintain our 6000 page website, send out our bi-weekly newsletter, and promote the art and artists of cabaret. Just click on the JOIN HERE button at the top of every page on the website. You can even join instantly using a credit card and PayPal! Thanks for your support.

Time to send this off and get my much needed nap - I was up at 6:00 am today, and spent the first two hours posting John Hoglund's column on the website - but I did cheat a bit and did a lot of work on this issue on Sunday afternoon. More on Thursday!

AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER: Each MONDAY issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter includes listings for all the banner advertisers on the website as long as the banner is running. In most cases there are more detailed articles on these items in the CABARET NEWS section of the website.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them!

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places where the show information can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

One last reminder - tickets to the 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are sold out - completely sold out. There is a chance of cancellations, so you may place you name on the waiting list - see the website for instructions. Please also remember, THERE WILL BE NO WAITING LIST SEATS AVAILABLE AT THE CLUB THE DAY OF THE SHOW - those without tickets should not come to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on the 6th to see if there were any "no shows" - we will not be able to sell any tickets that day even if there are seats available.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
