SAD NEWS JUST RECEIVED - JAY BRADLEY DIES IN GREECE
I received via txt message just minutes ago from Greece, and confirmed
by Phyllis Pastore here in the US that D. Jay Bradley died this morning
in Mykonos, Greece. He had flown there yesterday to accompany Lina
Koutrakos at the cafe where she appears each summer. He arrived in
Mykanos last night after a difficult journey, with two connecting
flights from Athens to Mykonos having been cancelled and thus a 9
hour wait in the airport. Reportedly he wanted to rent a moped this
morning and then went to a small cafe for breakfast and was in really
great spirits. He spoke with Jody and Nikos, the owners of the bar
while he was at the cafe. They were waiting for him to stop by their
apartment when they got a call from the owner of the moped rental
shop. Apparently, he finished his breakfast, got on the bike and collapsed.
He was dead when he arrived at the hospital. His family in California
is now making arrangements with the US Embassy to have his body returned
home.
I and many others are in total shock. Jay was a good
friend - and had many good friends. I could tell 100 stories or
more of the wonderful things we shared over the years. More details
on Thursday in the newsletter and on the message board and website
later.

HERE & THERE
When I started on this issue I first went to my "news" mailbox to
see the items I could include - and discover again that it was almost
empty! One or two items need a lot of work (must be completely rewritten)
and will be included in the next issue. Another few items were merely
copies of postcards or posters, and I don't really consider them press
releases. Finally there were a few "releases" that were nothing more
than "listings" and of course unusable. So this is another "short"
issue. Of course it is summer and cabaret always slows down in the
summer.
Two new items are already up on the website - another Chicago cabaret
review by Carla Gordon and the first report from Bill Stephens of
the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, which just ended on Saturday. I am
waiting for Bill to send some photos, but I put the report up anyway
and will add the photos when they arrive.
I spent much of last week chasing down rumors and reports about HELEN'S
RESTAURANT, CABARET & PIANO LOUNGE (169 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-206-0609
- http://www.helensnyc.com/
). I haven't been able to report much on this, since there has up
to now been no "official announcement," and all last week there were
so many conflicting stories going around it was like a whirlwind.
The club had planned to close on June 30th but late in the week of
the 17th an inspector from the city dropped by and discovered that
a certain necessary permit or license had not been renewed for the
club and promptly closed the venue - placing some rather ominous and
misleading stickers on the door. With the weekend coming up it was
apparently impossible to get all the paperwork done, but the club
was set to reopen on Monday the 25th for the next show in the "Breast
in Show" benefit series. Which happened as announced. Things get a
little rocky and confused from there. Cynthia Crane's show on Wednesday
went on as scheduled, but on Thursday the club was closed again, and
Cynthia's show for that night was cancelled as was Kelly Briggs and
Jerry Christakos' "Lovely" show on Friday the 22nd. At this point,
with the planned closing coming up, it was decided not to reopen the
club for just one final week, and except for a private party on Sunday
the 24th, the club closed its doors (no shutters at HELEN'S).
I am sure there is a lot to this story yet to be told,
but by whom and when remains to be seen. The above is based on the
best possible information I could glean from all the e-mails and
conversations of the past 10 days or so. Lacking any official press
release, this is the best that I could do.
Sad news also from London: PIZZA ON THE PARK (11 Knightsbridge, Hyde
Park Corner, London - 020-7235-5273 - http://www.pizzaonthepark.co.uk/
) will be closing at the end of July. Now remember that this happened
once - maybe even twice - before, so I am hesitant to say "down and
out" on this one.
Also closing down, FOOTLIGHT RECORDS website. The
actual retail FOOTLIGHT store closed a year or more ago, but their
extensive inventory of CDs and vintage records remained available
on the internet. Now that outlet is closing as well. According to
word I have, the closing is set for July 4th. Any remaining stocks
will be available through Amazon.com.
In shock over the sad news from Greece, I will have to continue the
rest of what I planned to write today in the Thursday issue.
AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER: Each MONDAY issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter
includes listings for all the banner advertisers on the website as
long as the banner is running. In most cases there are more detailed
articles on these items in the CABARET NEWS section of the website.

PROMOTE YOUR SHOW, CD OR OTHER EVENT ON THE WEBSITE
If you are planning on running a banner for your show or CD, be sure
to place your order well in advance. Banners are available in three
sizes and are priced accordingly. I limit the number of banner ads
to 25 per week and home-page side-bar ads to 5 per week. Please let
me know if you wish to reserve space and for which weeks (banners
run from Sunday through Saturday). Just go to the website and click
on the button BANNER INFO for prices and details. Performers running
banners get a special listing for their show or other cabaret-related
item in every MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, reaching nearly
2,500 subscribers.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website (http://www.svhamstra.com/
). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of
at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information
- and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference
to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
If you don't have a press release, just click here:
http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use
for the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press
release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links
(with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.)
Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one
of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and
lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them!
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please
keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about
their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show
is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also
posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places
where the show information can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
One last reminder - tickets to the 17th BIRTHDAY PARTY of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE are sold out - completely sold out. There is a chance
of cancellations, so you may place you name on the waiting list -
see the website for instructions. Please also remember, THERE WILL
BE NO WAITING LIST SEATS AVAILABLE AT THE CLUB THE DAY OF THE SHOW
- those without tickets should not come to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on
the 6th to see if there were any "no shows" - we will not be able
to sell any tickets that day even if there are seats available.
And that is just about the way it was.
