HERE & THERE
I am most heartened by the wonderful messages of love and memories posted on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MESSAGE BOARD by the friends of DJ Jay Bradley, who passed away so suddenly on Monday. I hope that many more will post their own personal note honoring and remembering this Christmas loving, always giving, always cheerful, talented entertainer. His family included a post last night, thanking all for their kind thoughts and some preliminary plans for a memorial event of some sort, spearheaded by Bill Morgan, one of the owners of THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/ ).

Personally I am still trying to accept the reality of Jay's passing. I saw two shows at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ) and reminisced a bit between shows with Joe Regan, who as at the piano in the piano bar. Wednesday night was Jay's usual shift at MAMA'S so Joe and I were just a but overcome by the occasion.

Looking at the club calendars for the next few days shows that the placement of the 4th of July on a Wednesday really means a light week for cabaret - at least here in Manhattan. It is just as well, as far as I am concerned - all the events of the past 10 days have been a bit overwhelming and I look forward to a little bit of a cutback in my schedule. In this connection - and repeating an announcement near the top of this issue, because of the July 4th Birthday of the USA and the July 6th Birthday of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, and the 17th Anniversary Party on the 6th at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ), there will be no CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter on THURSDAY JULY 5TH. News items will continue to be posted on the website as received. Items usually found in the Thursday newsletter will be included in the issues of either Monday July 2nd or July 9th.

At long last I have my identity back - my official NY State Identification Card arrived yesterday in the mail. Now please don't ask to see it - the photo is so horrible I feel like covering it with a postage stamp or something. I remember hearing a comic somewhere say that you can tell that a man is straight if he doesn't complain about the photo on this driver's license. I will leave it at that. The ID is valid through 2017, which means I have 10 years of looking at that sorry photo. It is enough encouragement for me to try to live at least 11 more years in order to get a new photo taken - and I will take along a makeup artist, lighting designer and clown to make me smile next time.

John Hoglund e-mailed me this morning that his next AFTER DARK with John Hoglund is nearly complete and well be sent me later today. He already e-mailed me a few photos to go along with the article that he took on Monday night at Elaine Joyce's sold-out show at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ). I saw the show last night - again sold out - and it is repeated tonight at 9:00 pm. It is a lot of fun - after all Ms. Joyce created the show along with her husband Neil Simon - yes that Neil Simon. He was at the show as well along with about a dozen Broadway/Hollywood stars, including Tommy Tune who I quickly add is alive and well and actually looks fantastic.

By the way, John's first AFTER DARK column, which went up last week, continues to be one of the most visited section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website! He also tells me he has received dozens of e-mails and phone calls about the column. Check the website tomorrow for the latest "episode."

I wish I were in a better mood to write more today. And I wish I had more news to bring you in this issue. But it is summer - the temperatures have been in the 90s (f) most of the week so far, with thunderstorms and floods in the afternoons - yesterday electric power was disrupted in a section of town for nearly an hour, disrupting subway service and sending thousands of people outside in the heat. Then a few hours later a massive but quick storm passed through the area with about 2 inches of rain in less than an hour, causing flooding and further disruption of the subways. Somehow I managed to avoid both storms and never had a chance to unfurl my umbrella!

Just another reminder that all 2006-2007 Memberships will expire in 7 days - on Thursday July 5th. We have our membership drive in July each year in order to replace the income that we lose from the usual 50-60% drop in banner advertising in July & August. By the way, with fewer banners running, your banner is actually displayed more often, since the displays are random, and with fewer banner running the randomizer will hit on your banner's number that many more times!

That's all for today. See you all on Monday!

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.

By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website).

IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

Your membership donations support this publication and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. If you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and would like to support us, why not join as a supporting member? Your donation is most important to me, not just to pay for my food, cable, phone, DSL and rent, etc., but also as a confirmation of your appreciation. Can you please help?

For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, just click on the JOIN HERE button on the website. You can even make your membership donation by credit card, using PayPal. If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your membership donations make this all possible.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
