HERE & THERE
I am sort of lucky being able to send out this issue since on Tuesday night I had a little spill at the computer and soon discovered that my space bar and the letter P were no longer working on my keyboard. They are not even near each other, but they happen to be sort of important keys when trying to write a newsletter. In order to answer e-mails I actually had to "cut & paste" the letter P and spaces between words.

So yesterday I took a bus downtown (I am already in what is known as downtown, but this was further downtown) to the SOHO Apple Store to purchase a new one, only to discover that the only keyboards in stock we "wireless" ones. This sort of confirmed the rumor that has been spreading in the MAC-APPLE community that next week Apple will be announcing a new updated iMac - with a redesigned keyboard. I was told there were no regular keyboards available anywhere in the area.

The wireless model is double the price of the regular keyboard and with finances being so very tight right now I really could not afford it - but I had to get the issue out today and I had no choice. I was told that I had 14 days to return the wireless one and replace it with the regular (and I guess the newer model) one.

But now I find I love this wireless one - and it allows me to place the keyboard far away from my desk while dining (with my roommate working days outside the apartment I find it much more convenient to eat at my desk). This should help avoid future spills. So this issue of the newsletter is sponsored by the letter P and the space bar.

There is something philosophical about a space bar. I actually doesn't type anything - or to put it another way, it types nothing, yet without it, thingswouldbeunreadable. Sort of a lesson in life taken from a keyboard.

There is a little "coda" to the tale of my journey to Soho (I live on 10th Street - Houston Street is sort of "zero" street, running just below 1st Street. Soho is the area "South Of HOustin" street. So it is a 10 block bus trip south and 6 avenues west to Broadway, then one block walk south to Prince Street and the Apple Store. It sounds like a simple, quick trip. But now factor in the temperature of 91 degrees with a humidity in the same number range, and the fact that the bus comes by in the non-rush hour period just once every half hour. When I arrived back I had a splitting headache from the heat and sun. So, no cabaret for me last night. Today I am staying in until about 7:00 pm (there is no Chatterbox at MAMA'S at 6:00 pm tonight) and then heading up to UNCLE CHARLIE'S for David Pellegrene's NO COVER CABARET at 8:00 pm featuring "lean & handsome" Jacob Coronado. who is actually the waiter there. I do not use the words "lean & handsome" loosely, since this Texas-born lad is both. I've been waiting since the bar opened to hear him sing.

As long as "the heat is on" I am making up my cabaret schedule one day at a time. And as much as possible staying indoors in the a/c during the afternoon hours (I did my laundry yesterday morning a 9:00 am).

I will definitely do my best to get to the eagerly anticipated opening of the RITA MAE PIANO BAR on this Friday night, the 3rd. It is amazing how quickly the folks at RUBY FRUIT could get this new space renovated, decorated and up an running so quickly. They actually purchased the piano that was at ROSE'S TURN, so not only the staff but the sound will be pretty much the same as before. See the "top" story of today's issue for the list of all the folks from ROSE'S TURN (and a few from HELEN'S & DANNY'S as well) who will be staffing the new venue. Note to all the folks who complained about the closing of ROSE'S TURN - now is the time to show your stuff and support the new bar! Many piano bar and cabaret aficionados will remember this space as the former UPSTAIRS-DOWNSTAIRS (the late Bruce Hopkins used to book the place). It went through a couple of name changes after that. Everything old is new again!

Is $20 too much to ask for a membership donation to support the newsletter and the website? With two issues going out nearly every week that comes to about a penny a newsletter. Please support our efforts to promote the art and artists of cabaret by joining as a member today. The need right now is critical - there are just five paid banners running right currently, with one of them set to expire on Saturday. To stay afloat we need to have about 12 to 15 banners running. My bank account is once again running dry. I have some "promised receivables" that, if paid, would get me through the next few weeks, but I can't buy groceries using "promised receivables." I am counting on you for your support this week. 140 members from 2006-2007 have still to rejoin - and if all did that would mean only 1/5 of the subscribers to the newsletter would be supporting members. If you appreciate my efforts, please let me know by joining. Click the button JOIN HERE at the top of every page on the website for information on membership benefits.

Got SKYPE? John McMahon does, and he gave me a call using SKYPE yesterday afternoon as a test. It worked pretty well. Let me know by e-mail if you have a SKYPE account. SKYPE lets you use your computer sort of like a telephone. You can get a SKYPE account for free - just check out http://www.skype.com/helloagain.html . You will also need a microphone and speakers (or a set of headphones with mic attached - cost about $30). Why, you ask, am I asking? Well, the sound quality is great, and with the programs I have on my computer I am able to record SKYPE calls as they are come in - perfect for creating "live" interviews which can be used in a podcast or as a mpg file folks can listen to right on my website.

And I can even take your cabaret related questions and cabaret related show and CD information "live" while I'm away from my computer - sort of like an answering machine. If you have a SKYPE account, please send me an e-mail so we can test this out a bit. Just write me at stuhamstra@svhamstra.com or use the "COMMENT" button on the home page of the website.

Once again, I would love to have your input as to the recent design and layout changes on the website, and the format changes in the newsletter. Do you like the "Picks of the Week" section? Right now I only covers NYC - would you like to see it expanded to other cities? This will mean finding folks in those areas with time and motivation to do this, but I will do my best if that is what you want. John Hoglund reports that he has received a ton of e-mail complementing him on his new AFTER DARK column that runs exclusively on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. Let me know what you think. Just write me at stuhamstra@svhamstra.com or use the "COMMENT" button on the home page of the website.

Well, my press release in-box only holds September news right now - and we are hardly into August! I need news to keep these issues interesting and informative, and to keep the website fresh and timely - and it doesn't cost you a penny for your news item to be seen here. How do you get an item included in the newsletter and/or posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. More details on what I am looking for near the bottom of this issue.

That's about it for today. And once more, if you appreciate these newsletters and all the other ways we make available for performers to get the word out about their shows and CDs, why not join today - just $20 gets you a SILVER membership and that $20 would mean so much right now to me.

STU'S PICKS - NYC CABARET IN THE NEXT 7 DAYS

A thrilling time in NYC cabaret continues into next week! Having seen most of the shows on the cabaret schedules, I would be hard pressed to pick out a single one!
THURSDAY AUGUST 2nd:
DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ) - 6:00 pm - Normally I would be plugging BROADWAY CHATTERBOX with Seth Rudetsky but the show is cancelled for tonight as Seth takes a family vacation in Provincetown! I can't wait for the stories he will have next Thursday!

THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) - 7:00 pm - Bill McKinley is back in his first cabaret solo appearance since 2001, with his acclaimed "irreverently reverent" Disney songbook show DON'T TELL WALT. I saw and raved about this show when it played MAMA'S in 2001 - especially the superb vocals - I'm obsessed about the vocals! I meet Bill often when I pick up my mail on Ninth Avenue and beg him each meeting to perform solo in NY again. A wish come true! (It repeats next week Wednesday & Thursday.)

THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/theater/schedule ) - 7:00 pm - Scott Albertson and the Daryl Kojak Jazz Quintet present their new show "Come Sing and Swing" and while I haven't seen this particular show, I have seen this gang in performance several times and they never disappoint.

FRIDAY AUGUST 3rd:
THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - 7:3O pm - Lisa Asher fills in for recovering Tom Andersen and along with Scott Coulter and Tim DiPasqua bring the award winning SOUTHERN COMFORT show to Chelsea - a little bit country and little bit cabaret, with a toe-tapping bluegrass band that will make it impossible to stay in your seat. These three great cabaret vocalists are all multi-award winners - put them together and you have an unforgettable hour of greatness. The trio had to cancel their show last week because Tom was ill, but this week the show will go on. It is the last in a 2-show series so the room should be packed - reserve early if you can!

THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER - 10:30 pm - Brandon Cutrell hosts AFTER PARTY, a free-wheeling open-mic with guest stars from Broadway and Cabaret, Ray Fellman at the piano and Lisa Asher and others serving up drinks and taking turns at the mic. For some strange reason I find myself there nearly every Friday night. Oh, and if you are a member of AA, stay away. The beers, cocktails and shots flow freely here.

SATURDAY AUGUST 4th:
DON'T TELL MAMA - 8:30 & 11:00 pm - POOLE PARTY with hosts Ron Poole and Darlene Violette and some of the funniest guys and gals in the standup comedy world and Sidney Myer too! You will usually find me here at one or both of these shows.

SUNDAY AUGUST 5th:
BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - http://www.birdlandjazz.com/ ) - 7:00 pm - Six time MAC Award-winner, Natalie Douglas brings her show, "I Sing Because I'm Happy," back to the Birdland stage for the sixth time! Douglas and musical director Mark Hartman feature the gospel music they grew up with. Truly a great way to spend a Sunday evening - the lady is incredible! (repeats Monday night).

MONDAY AUGUST 6th:
BIRDLAND - 7:00 pm - Natalie Douglas (see Sunday August 5th)

BIRDLAND - 10:30 pm - Jim Caruso's CAST PARTY is here every Monday night, with open-mic and a mixed bag of great, not so great and never-will-be-great talent taking turns on stage. I haven't been there in a while - I get up at 6:00 am on Mondays to write the newsletter and by 10:30 pm I am usually back home, but it remains one of the hottest weekly events in town.

Now this is all just a sampling, and just lists shows and/or performers I have actually seen - there are another few dozen shows in town I haven't seen that probably would be listed if I had!

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form, in chronological order where possible, and linked to a full article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website.

He has been replaced in this Friday's show by the MAC-award winning Lisa Asher. As you may recall, Tom took ill last week, forcing the cancellation of last Friday's show, and while he has been released from the hospital, his doctors advised complete rest for a while. Lisa is a real country gal from Kentucky and is a natural to complete the trio for this BISTRO award winning show and 2007 MAC Nominated show.

CABARET HOTLINE MESSAGE BOARD IS FREE FOR ALL - NO PASSWORD
You can state your opinion, promote your show or CD (or someone else's show or CD), announce your show cancellation or postponement, or post any other cabaret-related message on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Message Board - just click on the button marked MESSAGE BOARD at the top of every page on the website. It is a FREE service to promote the art and artists of cabaret. You need not be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (but it would be nice) and you don't need a password. Just read the rules and be sure to use your real name on your posting. Unfortunately, since there is no membership or password required, the board has been the subject of a lot of spam postings - up to 50 or more a day - so it is currently being moderated 24 hours a day, so it may take a while for your post to appear, especially if you post your message between 4:00 pm and 1:00 am when I am usually away from my computer. This is a FREE service to promote the art and artists of cabaret. You need not be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (but it would be nice).

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing. Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to be sure that these discounts will be honored. Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.

By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website).

IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

Your membership donations support this publication and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. If you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and would like to support us, why not join as a supporting member? Your donation is most important to me, not just to pay for my food, cable, phone, DSL and rent, etc., but also as a confirmation of your appreciation. Can you please help?

For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, just click on the JOIN HERE button on the website. You can even make your membership donation by credit card, using PayPal. If you prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, 676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your membership donations make this all possible.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
