HERE & THERE
OK, so I overslept a bit this morning - 8:30 am instead of the usual
6:30 - 7:00 wake--up time on "newsletter day." I've gotten into the
"piano bar" spirit and the past few nights have been sampling some
of the really great piano bar fun spots around town. (Last night is
was at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788
- http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/
)) The problem is that going to one of these clubs is like going to
a party - it is really hard to get up and go home - you always feel
you are going to miss something special if you leave too early.
In fact, I got hooked into the whole cabaret scene
years ago in a famous piano bar/restaurant called the 5 Oaks, on
Grove Street, just down the street from the now-closed ROSE'S TURN.
I would head there after work (I was working from 2:00 to 10:00
pm over in New Jersey) and would get there around 11:00 pm and end
up hanging out until they were turning up the lights and putting
the chairs atop the tables so they could sweep the floors. Marie
Blake was at the piano most nights (Steven Lowenthal, Mark Nadler,
Ricky Ritzel and others would be there on her nights off), and singers
from Liza to Claiborne Cary to that little Irish guy who thought
he could sing but couldn't, would take turns at the mike. One night
John Waters and Harvey Fierstein actually sang in trio with Liza
- of course doing "Ring Them Bells." It was not unusual to see movie
and Broadway stars mingling with Euro-trash and South American tycoons
in this famed late-night bistro. The clocks at "the Oaks" were set
15 minutes slow and all the bartenders and wait staff from the village
would flock here at the pseudo-3:45 pm, when their bars closed,
for a quick drink or two before "last call."
And the "cabaret kids" would all stop by during the
evening and "pitch" their shows - giving a sample of the show at
the mic and then wandering through the room passing out fliers.
I got to know many of them and started going to see their shows
on my nights off. And thus my fascination (obsession?) with cabaret
began. And who could forget the amazing Laurel Watson? This lady
could sing the blues like no one else.
I was at the opening night of RITA MAE'S Downstairs
at RUBY FRUIT (531 Hudson Street, NYC - 212-929-3343 - http://www.rubyfruitnyc.com/
) on Friday and if there is one room in NYC that has the potential
to bring back the aura of the 5 Oaks it is this place. Located just
a block off Christopher Street, on Hudson Street, the downstairs
den-like room was filled with cheer and celebration. Ricky Ritzel,
still going strong "after all these years." The tables are close
together, there is an active bar, and one of those instant "everyone
knows your name" atmospheres.
Best of all, I just need to cross the street and go
1/2 block south to 10th Street to catch a bus (runs all night) that
takes me from Hudson across town to Avenue C and virtually to my
doorstep! And the bus ride takes you through the three villages
- West, Middle and East - a grand tour with scenery changing every
block of the way. The bus stops nearly every block, so if you are
in a hurry take a cab. But if you - like me - love to savor NYC
and love to "people watch" this route is the best in the city. I
used to have a favorite table at the 5 Oaks (they didn't actually
reserve it for me, but sometimes even asked people to move to another
table when I arrived) and I am heading back to RITA MAE'S again
this week - maybe even more than once - to seek a new favorite corner.
For a few photos, complements of John Hoglund, taken
on opening night, check the website - http://www.svhamstra.com/PHO07RitaMaeOpens.shtml
John Hoglund has more to say about RITA MAE'S, plus a bit of cabaret
history, and two reviews in his latest AFTER DARK column. See http://www.svhamstra.com/REVNY070805.shtml
Speaking of the AFTER DARK column, you can become a sponsor of this
special section of the website - fast becoming the most popular pages
(second only to the MESSAGE BOARD). Sponsorship is available now through
September 1st - and after September 30th. Click on the button marked
BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website and scroll down.
If interested, let me know at once. Only one ad appears in this section
(except for the rotating banners at the top).
Thursday night I was back at UNCLE CHARLIE'S (139 East 45th Street
2nd Floor, NYC - 212-661-9097 - http://www.unclecharliesnyc.com/
) for another NO COVER CABARET show hosted by always-cheerful David
Pellegrene. The star of the show was Jacob Coronado - who usually
is a waiter at this three-part club - bar, piano bar and garden (a
boon for folks who still smoke but hate to stand outside on the sidewalk).
It was Jacob's very first public solo performance, but he handled
it like a pro. He claimed later that he was overcome with fear while
at the mic, but it showed not a bit. He even handled a rogue suspender
strap as though it was part of the act. Tall, lean and handsome (ok,
he's cute!) he reminded me of those pencil-slim Aussie boys who Les
Solomon used to export to the US around Cabaret Convention time (but
Jacob has a neater hair style and without the accent). Jacob currently
has no intention of making this a career, but apparently after hearing
and seeing all the folks at the open mic for the past two months,
figured he would give it a try.
By the way, David Pellegrene's NO COVER CABARET Thursday
night slots are virtually filled to the end of the year, and he
is planning on adding the one-hour shows on Fridays or Wednesdays
to accommodate the demand. Stop by UNCLE CHARLIE'S Thursday through
Saturday after 9:00 pm and talk to David about booking your mini-show
there - and hang around for much fun and song.
I don't know how better to put this than to say "help!" With only
4 rotating banners currently running (instead of the usual 12 to 15),
the AFTER DARK section un-sponsored for the next few weeks, only one
SIDE-BAR and only one SUPER SIDE-BAR ad running, right now - in the
days between paying the rent and receiving the SS check mid-month
- CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is hurting. The income from our 17th Birthday
Party on July 6th helped us survive through June and July - as it
was designed to do. We count on membership donations in July and August
to carry us through to September, when advertising income gets back
to normal.
A few weeks ago I signed on John Hoglund, former BACK
STAGE reviewer, to contribute a column to the website. John's AFTER
DARK column has already brought about an increase of nearly 20%
in website visits - but he needs to be paid for his contributions
as well. I knew that this added obligation would increase my expenses
at a time when income is at its lowest, but the opportunity to sign
on a writer of his background, experience and knowledge of cabaret
could not be ignored.
Over the weekend, after a special e-mail appeal, we
picked up about a dozen new members plus some donations, but we
really need more folks to join in the next few days to make it through
to September. Your PayPal SILVER membership of just $20 (or GOLD
at $75) would mean so much to me today you have no idea. Actually,
any size donation - large or small - would be truly appreciated.
And check out the advertising opportunities - several
sizes, styles and prices are available - and not only will your
ad be running on the website, your event will be mentioned in every
MONDAY issue of the newsletter - sent to nearly 2500 subscribers
- at no additional charge for as long as your ad is running. Just
click on the BANNER INFO button at the top of every page on the
website.
Here's a note (slightly edited) from Marilyn Bradley-Buck, sister
of the late D. Jay Bradley, that I want to share with you. For those
new to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, Jay passed away in mid-July on the
island of Mykonos, where he had gone to perform with Lina Koutrakos
at a piano bar there. Because cremation is not an option in Greece,
Jay's remains had to be shipped - at great expense - to Germany, and
then the ashes sent to his family in California. There was a special
benefit held at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street,
NYC - 1-212-255-5438 - http://www.theduplex.com/
) on July 18th to help the family defray these expenses:
Stu,
I was saddened to read in your column that ... many
... were unable to attend the memorial for Jay [at THE DUPLEX] on
July 18, 2007. The turnout and response was very gratifying to the
family ... Everyone in the industry has been very kind and generous
with their donations. We now have Jay at home in California thanks
to so many people's assistance. One of my goals is to get his last
Christmas CD published as he wished: "Live at the Metropolitan Room
... D Jay Bradley's Twelfth Christmas."
Thank you again ... Marilyn Bradley-Buck
Hats off to Lisa Asher, who filled in for Tom Andersen at the last
minute on Friday night at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street,
NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
). Tom was originally scheduled to sing along with Scott Coulter and
Tim Di Pasqua in a repeat of their award-winning SOUTHERN COMFORT
show, but took ill, causing a cancellation of the first show on July
27th. When it appeared that Tom would not be able to make the second
show on the 3rd of August either, a call went out to Lisa on Tuesday
the 31st and the show went on - without a hitch and to a cheering
audience on Friday. Lisa had a slight advantage - she's from Kentucky,
and the show was made up of country and bluegrass songs.
Well gang, time to send this newsletter off. Please drop me a line
with any thoughts, comments and suggestions - and please send in those
press release (by e-mail, please - saves me a lot of retyping). More
news on Thursday!
PICKS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD IN NYC CABARET
As cabaret here in NYC moves into the "August Doldrums" I had just
a little difficulty picking out cabaret shows that I have seen and
liked that are happening this week - remember, my picks are only from
shows seen, not heard about. In fact there a few shows I plan to see
this week for the very first time and some might get onto this list
next week.
TONIGHT - MONDAY AUGUST 6th:
BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - http://www.birdlandjazz.com/
) - 7:00 pm - Six time MAC Award-winner, Natalie Douglas brings her
show, "I Sing Because I'm Happy," back to the Birdland stage for the
sixth time! Douglas and musical director Mark Hartman feature the
gospel music they grew up with. Truly a great way to spend a Sunday
evening - the lady is incredible!
BIRDLAND - 10:30 pm - Jim Caruso's CAST PARTY is here
every Monday night, with open-mic and a mixed bag of great, not
so great and never-will-be-great talent taking turns on stage. I
haven't been there in a while - I get up at 6:00 am on Mondays to
write the newsletter and by 10:30 pm I am usually back home, but
it remains one of the hottest weekly events in town.
TUESDAY AUGUST 7th:
THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/)
- 7:OO pm - The legendary Annie Ross - need I say more? I have seen
this jazz/cabaret icon several times (the show changes weekly) - she
was one of the originators of the "vocalese" style. Vocalists from
all over the world flock to hear her performances. Not to be missed,
instead to be savored like a fine vintage wine.
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 8th:
THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - 7:00 pm - Bill McKinley is back in his first
cabaret solo appearance since 2001, with his acclaimed "irreverently
reverent" Disney songbook show DON'T TELL WALT. I saw and raved about
this show when it played MAMA'S in 2001 - especially the superb vocals
- I'm obsessed about the vocals! I meet Bill often when I pick up
my mail on Ninth Avenue and beg him each meeting to perform solo in
NY again. A wish come true! (It repeats on Thursday.)
THE TRIAD (158 West 72nd Street, NYC - 212-362-2511
- http://www.Triadnyc.com/
) - From 9:00 pm to midnight, Scott Barbarino presents Jazzaret
- sort of an open-mic for jazz, with the Barry Levitt Trio and comic
Diana Lorge, plus a special guest artist - this week it is Cleve
Douglass. Who could ask for anything more?
THURSDAY AUGUST 9th:
DON'T TELL MAMA - 6:00 pm - SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX with Broadway
Musical Maven Seth Rudetsky. His guest interviewee hasn't been announced
yet, but this show is always fantastic - and all proceeds go to BROADWAY
CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS (http://www.bcefa.org/
)
THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - 7:00 pm - Bill McKinley -
see Wednesday.
FRIDAY AUGUST 10th:
THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438
- http://www.theduplex.com/
) - 7:00 pm - You can't have much more fun than attending a Bronwyn
Rucker event, and her "Summer of Love" show that features "hippy songs
of wartime evolution" should be no exception. The show will benefit
the St. Clements' Church Soup Kitchen. Musical direction is by Jim
Allen, with direction by Lisa Moss. Also appearing are Joe Regan,
Barbara Mundy, Nancy Sirianni, Ivis Fundichely, Lanny Blaustein, Henry
Dee, Michael Fairbairn, Chris Morrison and Thomas Honeck.
THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West
42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/theater/schedule
) - 10:30 pm - Brandon Cutrell hosts AFTER PARTY, a free-wheeling
open-mic with guest stars from Broadway and Cabaret, Ray Fellman
at the piano and Lisa Asher and others serving up drinks and taking
turns at the mic. For some strange reason I find myself there nearly
every Friday night. Oh, and if you are a member of AA, stay away.
The beers, cocktails and shots flow freely here.
SATURDAY AUGUST 11th:
DON'T TELL MAMA - 8:30 & 11:00 pm - POOLE PARTY with hosts Ron Poole
and Darlene Violette and some of the funniest guys and gals in the
standup comedy world and Sidney Myer too! You will usually find me
here at one or both of these shows.
Now this is all just a sampling, and just lists shows and/or performers
I have actually seen and enjoyed - there are another few dozen shows
in town I haven't seen that probably would be listed if I had!
AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS
REMEMBER: Each MONDAY issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter
includes listings for all the banner advertisers on the website as
long as the banner is running. In most cases there are more detailed
articles on these items in the CABARET NEWS section of the website.

inspirations Jane Olivor and Phyllis Hyman. His long-awaited debut

SECOND SUPER SIDE-BAR AD AVAILABLE ON OVER 1000 PAGES
Several folks have asked if there was a way that their ad could be
seen on every page of the website, all the time. With over 5000 pages
on the site it would be impossible, now, thanks to some re-coding
of current and future pages it is possible for a side-bar ad (in the
right column on the pages "above the fold" except for the opening
page) to be seen on over 1000 pages - all the time. Only two SUPER
SIDEBAR ADS will be available per week. One of these SUPER SIDE-BAR
ads - twice the size (vertical) of regular side-bar ads is now available.
There is a 2-week minimum. Ads will appear in the right sidebar at
the top two positions - first ordered and paid goes in the top "Tiffany"
position. In addition, SUPER SIDEBAR advertisers will have their offering
mentioned in the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE. Click on the button
marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website for details
on all sizes, styles and specs.
SPONSORING ON THE TOWN WITH JOHN HOGLUND

"most displayed" pages in the website stats - and this section of
the website is made possible by a special SUPER-SIDE BAR ad that is

ads. 2-week minimum. Those running ads also get a special listing

article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate location on the
website. Events advertised on the website will be mentioned in every
MONDAY issue, and events offering discounts to members of CABARET

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section
of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release
of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information
- and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference
to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
If you don't have a press release, just click here:
http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use
for the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press
release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links
(with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.)
Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one
of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and
lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them!
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please
keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about
their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show
is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also
posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places
where the show information can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership
almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website, using a credit
card. Just click on the button at the top of every page of the website
marked JOIN HERE. Or you can mail your check, made out simply to Stu
Hamstra to 75-22 37th Avenue #35 - Jackson Heights, NY 11372. Memberships
are available at several levels with varying benefits. Basic membership
(which can be upgraded at any time with full credit) is $20 (SILVER).
You membership dollars support the website, the newsletter, the blog
and other activities of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Support CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE as it promotes the art and artists of cabaret.
And that is just about the way it was.
