HERE & THERE
I have several errands that must be run today, and not a whole lot
of news, so this issue is a little shorter than usual, and going out
just a little earlier.
First off, be sure to check out John Hoglund's AFTER DARK column,
which was posted on the website Monday afternoon, and has already
shot to the top of the "most visited pages" list. In this column John
delves a bit into the history of cabaret, especially in the Village,
and also reviews shows by Jim Van Slyke at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN CABARET
THEATER and Ann Hampton Callaway at THE BLUE NOTE. You can read it
at http://www.svhamstra.com/REVNY070805.shtml
.
Your ad can run exclusively in the AFTER DARK section - just click
on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page of the
website for information on all the styles, sizes and types of advertising
possibilities. There is an order in for the 4 weeks in September
- since it is an exclusive, first ordered/first paid gets this very
valuable placement.
From the looks of things, CHARLEY O's (713 Eighth Avenue, NYC - 212-977-0025),
which is really the fourth transformation of a space with the same
ownership throughout (BEEFSTEAK CHARLIES then TEQUILAVILLE then JOE
FRANKLIN'S then CHARLEY O's) is about to transform itself again. This
corner, in the heart of the theater district, seems to be a tough
sell restaurant-wise. So the jazz performances (no cover/no minimum)
that have been playing here for over a year on Tuesdays through Thursdays
(including Shaynee Rainbolt) have been discontinued.
Is 40 cents a week too much to ask? A SILVER membership donation to
support the newsletter and the website is just $20 - less than 40
cents a week - or 20 cents an issue. Please support our efforts to
promote the art and artists of cabaret by joining as a member today.
The need right now is critical - there are just four paid rotating
banners running currently. To stay afloat we need to have about 12
to 15 banners running. I am counting on you for your support this
week. Right now only 1 out of 10 subscribers has joined as a members
for 2007-2008. If you appreciate my efforts, please let me know by
joining today. Click the button JOIN HERE at the top of every page
on the website for information on membership choices and benefits.
Before we do to much "hand wringing" over the fact that some clubs
have closed recently, please note that several hundred venues presenting
live entertainment each week still are live and well and living in
NY. But neighborhoods change. Tastes in music change. Walk through
the West Village today and note the changes. Much of the nightlife
and many of the clubs have moved. Walk through Chelsea - which is
now going through the same changes that the West Village went through
a few years ago. Walk down Ninth Avenue from 50th Street to 42nd Street
- it is already about 50% different from when I lived in that neighborhood
6 or 7 years ago. Duane Reade drug stores, Starbucks coffee shops
and boutique restaurants and cafes abound. Then take a walk down in
my neighborhood - between 1st Avenue and Avenue B, from Houston to
14th Street. Avenue A is more active with cabarets and clubs than
Grove Street in the Village ever was. 20 years ago, when I lived in
the area, one dared not walk after 10:00 pm on any of these streets
- today one can hardly get through the crowds on the sidewalks at
2:00 am!
Live entertainment (including theatrical productions) is expensive.
According to the owners/managers, ROSE'S TURN was simply too small
a space to cover the increased costs of insurance, real estate taxes,
increased liquor costs and other expenses. Businesses are not in
business to lose money and when someone came along with an offer
they could not refuse, they didn't. The same thing could happen
to any other live entertainment venue - the real estate brokers
are out there checking their lists, once and twice.
Blame it on Giuliani, crime is at its lowest level in NYC in decades.
Blame it on Bush, the economy in NYC is booming, with unemployment
at its lowest point in decades. (I remember when economists said
that unemployment could never fall below a base of 5% - well it
is now below that percentage). Put low crime and low unemployment
together and you have folks flocking to NYC not just to visit but
to live. This means booming real estate values. Both commercial
and residential rents and property values go up and eventually the
"little guy" is forced out. The unprofitable businesses are forced
to close, their property taken over by national chains which can
afford not just the rent but also the increasing advertising and
promotion costs associated with doing business in a "boom town."
Now all this may change in just a year or so - administrations
and economic policies come and go. And one cannot discount the possibility
of another 9-11 type event - just 6 years ago the NYC economy went
into a tailspin that it has just now fully recovered from. Are bad
things good for cabaret? Does live entertainment thrive when the
economy is a bust? Not necessarily. But it does need to shift with
the changes in neighborhoods, rents and lifestyles. And another
thought: Tax breaks and government subsidies continue to go to the
entertainment venues catering to the rich for some reason (art galleries,
ballet, opera, etc.). Perhaps cabaret should get some support of
this type (the specter of government censorship is to be considered,
however). More on all this next time, including a discussion of
the question: "Is cabaret too gay to appeal to the mainstream?"
Got SKYPE? John McMahon does, and he gave me a call using SKYPE yesterday
afternoon as a test. It worked pretty well. Let me know by e-mail
if you have a SKYPE account. SKYPE lets you use your computer sort
of like a telephone. You can get a SKYPE account for free - just check
out http://www.skype.com/helloagain.html
. You will also need a microphone and speakers (or a set of headphones
with mic attached - cost about $30). Why, you ask, am I asking? Well,
the sound quality is great, and with the programs I have on my computer
I am able to record SKYPE calls as they are come in - perfect for
creating "live" interviews which can be used in a podcast or as a
mpg file folks can listen to right on my website.
And I can even take your cabaret related questions and cabaret
related show and CD information "live" while I'm away from my computer
- sort of like an answering machine. If you have a SKYPE account,
please send me an e-mail so we can test this out a bit. Just write
me at stuhamstra@svhamstra.com or use the "COMMENT" button on the
home page of the website.
Passing scene: For those who treasure the privacy of their personal
phone conversations and disdain the thought of wiretapping, take a
ride on a NYC bus some time where you can eavesdrop on two or three
phone conversations at the same time (sometimes both sides of the
conversation if the person has one of those squawking NEXTEL phones).
I did learn one thing - being PC is more natural than ever - one young
man, as we passed several fire trucks with several folks in full "battle
dress" calmly referred to them in his conversation on his cell phone,
as "firefighters" not "firemen" as I would probably done.
But here is an "opposite" anecdote: If you think our kids today
are learning tolerance and that prejudice is dead (at least in NYC),
think again. Also on the bus: Three boys - in their early teens
- obviously Latino - shouting ethnic slurs out the window at three
other boys - obviously Asian - on the sidewalk across the street.
Will it never end?
I was going to quit at 11:00 am to get some work done, and then simply
got carried away. So it is noon - I must get this issue off to you
and then get dressed and out and about - fortunately it is a little
cooler today. Until Monday, then.
STU'S PICKS - NYC CABARET IN THE SEVERAL DAYS
A thrilling time in NYC cabaret continues into next week! Having seen
most of the shows on the cabaret schedules, I would be hard pressed
to pick out a single one!
THURSDAY AUGUST 9th
DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/
) - 6:00 pm - BROADWAY CHATTERBOX with Seth Rudetsky - this week he
interviews Anthony Rapp, who is reprising his role in the long-running
Broadway show RENT. Seth's show is always so interesting, entertaining
and enlightening - and all proceeds go to BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS
AIDS (http://www.bcefa.org/ )!
THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440
- http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) - 7:00 pm - Bill McKinley is back for the last night in his first
cabaret solo appearance since 2001, with his acclaimed "irreverently
reverent" Disney songbook show DON'T TELL WALT. I saw and raved
about this show when it played MAMA'S in 2001 - especially the superb
vocals - I'm obsessed about the vocals! I saw this show last night,
and once again was entertained by the Disney songs and parts of
Bill's extensive collection of Disney paraphernalia.
FRIDAY AUGUST 10th:
THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 1-212-255-5438
- http://www.theduplex.com/
) - 7:00 pm - You can't have much more fun than attending a Bronwyn
Rucker event, and her "Summer of Love" show that features "hippy songs
of wartime evolution" should be no exception. The show will benefit
the St. Clements' Church Soup Kitchen. Musical direction is by Jim
Allen, with direction by Lisa Moss. Also appearing are Joe Regan,
Barbara Mundy, Nancy Sirianni, Ivis Fundichely, Lanny Blaustein, Henry
Dee, Michael Fairbairn, Chris Morrison and Thomas Honeck.
THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street,
NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/theater/schedule
) - 10:30 pm - Brandon Cutrell hosts AFTER PARTY, a free-wheeling
open-mic with guest stars from Broadway and Cabaret, Ray Fellman
at the piano and Lisa Asher and others serving up drinks and taking
turns at the mic. For some strange reason I find myself there nearly
every Friday night. Oh, and if you are a member of AA, stay away.
The beers, cocktails and shots flow freely here.
SATURDAY AUGUST 11th:
DON'T TELL MAMA - 8:30 & 11:00 pm - POOLE PARTY with hosts Ron Poole
and Darlene Violette and some of the funniest guys and gals in the
standup comedy world and Sidney Myer too! You will usually find me
here at one or both of these shows.
MONDAY AUGUST 13th:
CHRIS BARRETT WITH SONGS BY REQUEST AUGUST 13th
THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - 7:00 pm - Singer/pianist Chris Barrett brings
his new show "CHRIS BARRETT....by request" to for one night only.
Using his resources from over 30 years performing as a saloon singer
and pianist, Chris Barrett, via e-mail, has solicited and received
requests of favorite songs from his fans from which he has constructed
his newest show. A great entertainer.
BIRDLAND - 10:30 pm - Jim Caruso's CAST PARTY is here every Monday
night, with open-mic and a mixed bag of great, not so great and
never-will-be-great talent taking turns on stage. I haven't been
there in a while - I get up at 6:00 am on Mondays to write the newsletter
and by 10:30 pm I am usually back home, but it remains one of the
hottest weekly events in town.
Now this is all just a sampling, and just lists shows and/or performers
I have actually seen - there are another few dozen shows in town I
haven't seen that probably would be listed if I had!
NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear
just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form, in chronological
order where possible, and linked to a full article on the CABARET
NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website.
TONIGHT - THURSDAY AUGUST 9th
SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX TONIGHT WITH ANTHONY RAPP
2007 MAC BOD AWARD WINNER Seth Rudetsky's BROADWAY CHATTERBOX at DON'T
TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/
) is usually presented on Thursdays at 6:00 pm. Tonight, Thursday,
July 26th Seth's guest is Anthony Rapp who has returned to the Nederlander
Theatre reprising the role in RENT that he originated on Broadway.
Seth's weekly interview show always features stars, soon-to-be stars
and folks behind the scenes of the musical theater stage - for just
a $10 cover - 2-drink minimum. Best of all, all proceeds from the
cover go to BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS (http://www.bcefa.org/
)! For details, see: http://www.sethsbroadwaychatterbox/
.

CABARET HOTLINE MESSAGE BOARD IS FREE FOR ALL - NO PASSWORD
You can state your opinion, promote your show or CD (or someone else's
show or CD), announce your show cancellation or postponement, or post
any other cabaret-related message on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Message
Board - just click on the button marked MESSAGE BOARD at the top of
every page on the website. It is a FREE service to promote the art
and artists of cabaret. You need not be a member of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE (but it would be nice) and you don't need a password. Just
read the rules and be sure to use your real name on your posting.
Unfortunately, since there is no membership or password required,
the board has been the subject of a lot of spam postings - up to 50
or more a day - so it is currently being moderated 24 hours a day,
so it may take a while for your post to appear, especially if you
post your message between 4:00 pm and 1:00 am when I am usually away
from my computer. This is a FREE service to promote the art and artists
of cabaret. You need not be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (but
it would be nice).

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send
in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly
showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis
for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing.
Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to
be sure that these discounts will be honored. Any member who is denied
a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me
at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but
I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts
in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.
ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section
of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release
of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information
- and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference
to a website.
By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press
releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the
newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or
more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release
with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting
backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one
of those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and
lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or
listings request in simple .txt format (the format I write these
issues in and use for the website).
IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
Your membership donations support this publication and the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website. If you enjoy the fruits of our efforts and
would like to support us, why not join as a supporting member? Your
donation is most important to me, not just to pay for my food, cable,
phone, DSL and rent, etc., but also as a confirmation of your appreciation.
Can you please help?
For information on becoming a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE,
just click on the JOIN HERE button on the website. You can even
make your membership donation by credit card, using PayPal. If you
prefer not to use a credit card and PayPal, you can send a check
made out simply to Stu Hamstra and mail it to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE,
676A Ninth Avenue #120, NY, NY 10036.
I realize that there is probably far more information here than you
might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that
for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the
few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances.
To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact
that every issue published is also posted on my website means another
place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google,
etc.) alike. Your membership donations make this all possible.
And that is just about the way it was.
