CENTERSTAGE ANNOUNCES 2007-2008 SERIES
The CenterStage Singers & Songwriters Series, featuring songs from Broadway, Jazz & American Songbook, has announced their upcoming performance schedule, to be presented at OSHER MARIN JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER (200 North San Pedro Road, San Rafael, CA - 415-444-8088 - http://www.Marinjcc.org/ ). Subscription tickets for all performances have already gone on sale. All shows are at 8:00 pm. The show schedule is as follows:

Saturday, October 6th, 2007, Jason Graee in "Graae's Anatomy." His solo show, "Coup de Graae!" won the 2006 New York Nightlife Award, Bistro Award, and was listed in TimeOut NY's Top 10 Cabaret shows of the year. His new show "Graae's Anatomy" will include Jason's somewhat twisted and humorous take on songs by John Bucchino , Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Johnny Mercer and more. Joining Jason will be CenterStage's all time favorite musical director Alex Rybek.

Saturday, February 9th, 2008, Eric Comstock & Barbara Fasano in "Two for the Road." One of New York City's most acclaimed singer/pianists Eric Comstock and award-winning pop/jazz singer Barbara Fasano make their CenterStage debut with the West Coast premiere of their first joint show, "Two For the Road." These two cabaret stars have received individual acclaim in clubs and concert halls throughout the country. The duo of Comstock & Fasano were 2007 finalists for the Outstanding Cabaret Revue Award, and Barbara the recipient of a 2007 Bistro award. The husband and wife team will perform songs by other celebrated pairs such as Rodgers & Hart, Kern & Fields, Ellington & Strayhorn, the Gershwins, Coleman & Leigh, as well as Porter and Berlin.

Saturday, April 5th, 2008, Mary Cleere Haran in "I Love Lyrics." As a San Francisco native, Mary's early performing career included BEACH BLANKET BABYLON. Since then, she has followed her passion for club-singing and brought her own witty, musically sophisticated cabaret acts to such rooms as Rainbow & Stars, Michael's Pub, The Russian Tea Room, The Algonquin, The Cinegrill, and The Plush Room, as well as numerous other cabarets and concert halls throughout the U.S. For the last decade, Mary Cleere Haran has been unanimously adored by critics, comparing her singing to Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Doris Day and Rosemary Clooney. Her new show pays tribute to the great lyricists of the American Songbook.

Saturday, May 17th, 2008, Tony DeSare in "Swingin' the Night Away" Back by popular demand, jazz musician and crooner Tony, returns for an evening of swing, in the tradition of Frank Sinatra and the next generation of jazz/cabaret/American songbook greats such as Harry Connick, Jr. and John Pizzarelli. The young, handsome singer, pianist and composer earned rave reviews for his recent debut at the legendary Caf Carlyle. Come early for a free dance lesson. The dance floor will be open throughout the performance!

All Four Events: $165 - see website for single ticket sale information.

HERE & THERE
One of the interesting pleasures of living in a city with a nearly-universal mass transit system is trying to find the quickest and shortest routes from point A to point B. And real New Yorkers don't carry subway maps - except tucked away somewhere so that can help those one or two tourists not carrying a subway map in full view. No, real New Yorkers plan their route in advance, memorize it, and leave on their journey with confidence and elan.

So, yesterday I had to travel from my apartment (Avenue C and 10th Street) to BUTTERFIELD 8 RESTAURANT at 5 East 38th Street. It was easy to deduce that the club was just off Fifth Avenue (the E/W numbers start at zero at Fifth Avenue) and on the north side of the street (odd numbers are on the north side of streets - streets generally run E-W). So far so good. But there is no subway on Fifth Avenue - the closest lines are on Sixth or Lexington Avenues. I could have gone on the Sixth Avenue Line to 34th or 42nd, but yesterday the Dominican Day Parade was on Sixth Avenue (real New Yorkers keep track of these things) so I opted for the Lex line - exiting at the 42nd Street/Grand Central Station. So far so good.

But even real New Yorkers occasionally have to face a moment of truth - exiting from the subway. And at Grand Central you are confronted with a myriad of ways to exit, sometimes through long passageways that twist and turn. Thus it was that when I got on the street I was totally disorientated. But, wanting to appear confident and in control (a facade that all real New Yorkers employ) I walked to Fifth Avenue - or at least what I perceived as Fifth Avenue. For some strange reason, Fifth Avenue looked a lot like Lexington Avenue - both streets are southbound streets. And where was the famous NYC Public Library? I turned and proceeded in the opposite direction - no longer with the look of confidence and control - more like panic. I checked my watch - showtime was in 3 minutes. I stopped again - things didn't feel right. I turned around and started to walk in my original direction and turned, expecting to see Grand Central Station behind me. But it was gone! Then I realized it was across the street from the station! I had exited on the south side of the street, completely turned around by the maze of passageways I had followed!

Thus it was that I arrived at BUTTERFIELD 8 a full 15 minutes late, just as Caroline Lee Jones started to sing "Take the A Train." Yea, right - if I had taken the A train I would be in Harlem right now. Bad advice, Carolyn. Her next number? Had she changed her set list as a way of chiding me for my late arrival by singing "I Didn't Know What Time It Was"?

By the way, the show was great - Ms. Jones has great style and great vocals. I wish she had sung a little more, talked a little more and let the band play a little less, but its jazz. I'm afraid I'm the type of guy who loves the vocals and the lyrics, and really doesn't go to shows to hear a bass player or drummer doing 5 minute solos turns. By the way, what does a chart look like for a drum solo?

Oh, and BUTTERFIELD 8? (it gets its name from the old-style phone numbering system - BU8-5000, etc.) What an elegant space. The music room is not large - seating maybe 40 or so. But it is an intimate space well suited for cabaret-jazz performance. But the restaurant usually rents the space for private parties - almost every day - for businesses in the area to hold after-work gatherings. Saturday and Sunday nights are the only times the room is really available. Trudi Mann's Fabulous Sunday Brunch Open Mic shows are here every week. And thank you, Trudi, for discovering and rescuing my little iPod shuffle which I left forgotten on my table after the show.

As someone wrote recently (OK, it was in John Hoglund's AFTER DARK column) a door closes and another door opens. RITA MAE'S (531 Hudson Street, NYC - 212-929-3343 - http://www.rubyfruitnyc.com/ ) has already opened as an neat replacement for the recently closed ROSE'S TURN, with some of the same staff and the addition of food service. Now I hear that, neatly replacing DANNY'S in midtown (which closed in January), PURNIMA DILLON'S (245 West 54th Street, NYC - TKTS: 646-491-0987 - http://www.purnimarestaurant.com/ ) is once more opening its 90-seat cabaret room, with MAC VP and CABARET EXCHANGE editor Scott Barbarino as booking manager. Scott was booking manager here three years ago, and after he left the management became so chaotic that I no longer would set foot in the place. Official opening will be in October, but there is a show there this Saturday night at 9:00 pm (see the chronological listings below for details) if you want to check it out. Like DANNY'S and the also closed HELEN'S, food is available.

And there comes word of the possibility of a third new cabaret/jazz room opening in NYC before the end of the year. Stay tuned. Looks like of the "doom" prophets may be wrong after all (and expectedly so).

As usual, I have a lot more to say but no more time - I sort of got carried away with the news section and used up all my news items into September (and now I have about a dozen September items for the Thursday issue, plus any new August stuff that comes in (some folks wait until 3 days before the show date - often too late to make it into the newsletter.) So, enough for this issue - more on Thursday.

PICKS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD IN NYC CABARET
As cabaret here in NYC moves into the "August Doldrums" I had just a little difficulty picking out cabaret shows that I have seen and liked that are happening this week - remember, my picks are only from shows seen, not heard about. In fact there a few shows I plan to see this week for the very first time and some might get onto this list next week.

TONIGHT - MONDAY AUGUST 13th:
BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - http://www.birdlandjazz.com/ ) - 10:30 pm - Jim Caruso's CAST PARTY is here every Monday night, with open-mic and a mixed bag of great, not so great and never-will-be-great talent taking turns on stage. I haven't been there in a while - I get up at 6:00 am on Mondays to write the newsletter and by 10:30 pm I am usually back home, but it remains one of the hottest weekly events in town.

THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) - 7:00 pm - Singer/pianist Chris Barrett brings his new show "CHRIS BARRETT....by request" to for one night only. Using his resources from over 30 years performing as a saloon singer and pianist, Chris Barrett, via e-mail, has solicited and received requests of favorite songs from his fans from which he has constructed his newest show. A great entertainer.

TUESDAY AUGUST 14th:
THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - 7:OO pm - The legendary Annie Ross - need I say more? I have seen this jazz/cabaret icon several times (the show changes weekly) - she was one of the originators of the "vocalese" style. Vocalists from all over the world flock to hear her performances. Not to be missed, instead to be savored like a fine vintage wine.

THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - 9:30 pm - A gal who titles her shows with the same creativity she uses in preparing them, Mychelle Colleary is back with a new one: "August Is Romance Awareness Month." Forget about her awards and accolades from press and audiences - go to hear her simply because she is one of the best vocalists in town, with some of the most interesting takes on music and life. You will be entertained - no, I'll say it better: You will be overwhelmed.

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 15th:
THE TRIAD (158 West 72nd Street, NYC - 212-362-2511 - http://www.Triadnyc.com/ ) - From 9:00 pm to midnight, Scott Barbarino presents Jazzaret - sort of an open-mic for jazz, with the Barry Levitt Trio and comic Diana Lorge, plus a special guest artist - this week it is Francesca Amari. Who could ask for anything more?

THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - 7:30 pm - The award-winning trio Modern Man, in conjunction with Inverted Turtle Records will release their third outrageously funny recording, "Assisted Living," presented by Jamie deRoy & friends. The new CD features 12 original tracks by David Buskin, Rob Carlson and George Wurzbach. I've already listened to the CD and the songs are truly a riot - with typical Modern Man parody, word games and puns. The show should be just a much fun!

THURSDAY AUGUST 16th:
DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ) - 6:00 pm - SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX with Broadway Musical Maven Seth Rudetsky. His guest interviewee hasn't been announced yet, but this show is always fantastic - and all proceeds go to BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS (http://www.bcefa.org/ )

THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - 7:30 pm - Jazz singer/pianist Patti Wicks is performing for one night only so here's your chance to catch some jazz that stresses the lyric not just the harmonies - the way I feel jazz should be presented. She's not just "a member of the band" - she is the band, since she's at the piano with just a bass as back up. A true treat - don't miss her.

FRIDAY AUGUST 17th:
THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/theater/schedule ) - 10:30 pm - Brandon Cutrell hosts AFTER PARTY, a free-wheeling open-mic with guest stars from Broadway and Cabaret, Ray Fellman at the piano and Lisa Asher and others serving up drinks and taking turns at the mic. For some strange reason I find myself there nearly every Friday night. Oh, and if you are a member of AA, stay away. The beers, cocktails and shots flow freely here. Guest performer this week is Telly Leung, currently appearing in RENT.

SATURDAY AUGUST 18th:
DON'T TELL MAMA - 8:30 pm - POOLE PARTY with hosts Ron Poole and Darlene Violette and some of the funniest guys and gals in the standup comedy world and Sidney Myer too! You will usually find me here at one or both of these shows. The jokes a sometimes old, sometimes new, sometimes "borrowed" and sometimes a lighter shade of blue. But everyone has fun, including the bald guy in the front row that only laughs when Michael Brill is at the mic.

DON'T TELL MAMA - 11:00 pm - Award-winning impersonator Tommy Femia returns with his wildly popular, after-theater show "Judy Garland LIVE!", for this one night only in August, with David Maiocco at the piano. Each show features a special guest performer from cabaret, comedy or Broadway. If you have actually ever seen Judy Garland perform live you will be blown away by Tommy's impersonation. If you haven't seen Judy Garland perform live, come to this show and you will see as close to the real thing as is humanly possible. You will come away a believer. No one does it better!

Now this is all just a sampling, and just lists shows and/or performers I have actually seen and enjoyed - there are another few dozen shows in town I haven't seen that probably would be listed if I had!

Events advertised on the website will be mentioned in every MONDAY issue, and events offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every MIDWEEK issue.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ). How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them!

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places where the show information can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ), using a credit card. Just click on the button at the top of every page of the website marked JOIN HERE. Or you can mail your check, made out simply to Stu Hamstra to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036. Memberships are available at several levels with varying benefits. Basic membership (which can be upgraded at any time with full credit) is $20 (SILVER). You membership dollars support the website, the newsletter, the blog and other activities of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as it promotes the art and artists of cabaret.

And that is just about the way it was.
