SAD NEWS - JOHN WALLOWITCH PASSES ON AT AGE 81
Yesterday morning (Tuesday, August 14th) we received the news that prolific songwriter, cabaret and TV performer John Wallowitch passed away during the night at age 81 after a long bout with bone cancer. He was in failing health for the past several weeks, spending the last several days in a coma. Friends and family were by his side when he died. His longtime friend Dixie Carter had visited his bedside shortly before he passed away. He is survived by a sister, Anna Mae, and brother, Paul. A private funeral service will take place and a memorial service is planned.

I was first introduced to the charm and wit of John Wallowitch via cable TV via John's bi-monthly cable show, ÀJohn¡s Cabaret”, on which he presented special performers and sang. The first time I saw him in performance was at J's, where he was appearing with his long time partner Bertram Ross in a hilarious show of songs and banter. Their CD ÀWallowitch and Ross” on the Miranda Music label, and ÀWallowitch & Ross: This Moment”, a film by Richard Morris capture some of the joy and love these two men shared for so many years.

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE'S AFTER DARK columnist John Hoglund is preparing a detailed obituary which will be appearing on the website later today with more details and information.

SAD NEWS - BARBARA GOOD PASSES ON AT AGE 67
On Monday afternoon we received word from Heidi Good from Wheeling, West Virginia, that her mother Barbara Good passed away on Thursday, August 2nd at age 67 of complications relating to kidney cancer. Ms. Good was a longtime subscriber and charter member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. But she was even more special because she, nearly singlehandedly, worked to introduce the people of West Virginia to the art of cabaret. I quote from the Wheeling News-Register (http://www.news-register.net/ ):

"Born in Manhattan in Lenox Memorial Hospital on February 27, 1940, Barbara spent most of her life in Wheeling, and became a true 'Wheeling-ite' - possessing much that is good about our fair city.Ú More than a wife, more than a Mom, Barbara became the 'voice' of Wheeling as the region's premier singer/pianist and entertainer. Known for her warm, expressive singing and her amazing range of music,Ú Barbara beautifully performed for most of her life in her unique cabaret style. Her quality sound, her amazing and encyclopedic knowledge and selection of songs known by heart and memory - sheÚ reputedly knew more than over 1000 songs, words and music. Barbara won over appreciative audiences from Wheeling to Lapin Agile in Paris and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC."

Barbara produced and performed in her own cabaret series each year for nearly 10 years at the STIFEL FINE ARTS CENTER (1330 National Road, Wheeling, WV - 304-242-7700) - and every show was a sellout. She was a delightful correspondent, and I looked forward to her e-mails, always filled with wit and charm. As an indication of her wide ranging popularity and interests, she served on the West Virginia Human Rights Commission, was the first women to ever serve on the board of Wheeling Jesuit College, was president of the area's Hadassah Organization and was the primary soloist and choirÚ director of Temple Shalom for nearly 25 years. In addition, due to Barbara's rare condition, her body hasÚ been gifted to WVU Medical Center in order to further chromophobe renal cell oncology research.

Having never met her in person, I still shall truly miss her - the Wheeling community has indeed lost a wonderful citizen.

HERE & THERE
It has been another one of those weeks - and it is another one of those mornings when I find it so difficult to write this part of the newsletter. It appears that we are in a "watershed" period for cabaret here in NYC. Over the past 12 months we have lost some of our finest talents as well as some of our favorite venues. But somehow I see this period as not simply as the end of an era but a time for a new beginning. I shall have more to say on this after I sort out all the dynamics of the past few days.

Last year MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) had trouble finding folks to run for the vacant spots on its Board of Directors - 1/2 the board slots are up for election annually. In fact, if I recall correctly, everyone who placed their name in nomination last year won a board seat. It appears that MAC is having a problem again enticing folks to run - it has extended the deadline for submission of nominations from the 11th of August to this Friday, the 17th of August. If you are interested, you probably stand a great chance of being elected. There has been no announcement as to how many of the retiring board members will be putting their names in for reelection this year. But those who seek changes in the board membership will only have themselves to blame if they choose not to enter their own names in nomination this year.

Submissions can be sent by e-mail to: info@macnyc.com and must be received by midnight August 17th. Ballots will be mailed to the membership on August 26th. The names of the newly elected Directors will be announced at the MAC Annual Meeting to be held on Tuesday, September 25th at 6:00 pm (location to be announced.)

Brother, can you spare a few dimes? 40 cents a week? A SILVER membership donation to support the newsletter and the website is just $20 - less than 40 cents a week - or 20 cents an issue. Please support our efforts to promote the art and artists of cabaret by joining as a member today. The need right now is critical - there are just four paid rotating banners running currently. To stay afloat we need to have about 12 to 15 banners running. Instead we are falling behind. I am counting on you for your support this week. 1 out of 10 subscribers has joined as a members for 2007-2008. If you appreciate these newsletters, the 600+ page website and all the other things we are doing for cabaret, please let us know by joining today. Click the button JOIN HERE at the top of every page on the website for information on membership choices and benefits.

And that is all for today - I am going to start working on the next issue tomorrow morning and hopefully will get myself out of this "funk" by getting to as many cabaret shows and events as I can fit in my schedule - plus a few piano bars. Tonight I am at Seth Rudetsky's BROADWAY CHATTERBOX at 6:00 pm and the jazz singer/pianist Patti Wicks' show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM at 8:00 pm. Friday I want to see Grady Stone at 8:00 pm at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM - turns out she is from North Jersey, my childhood state. Then to THE LAURIE BEECHMAN for Brandon Cutrell's AFTER PARTY. Saturday of course a double-header at DON'T TELL MAMA - the Poole Party at 8:30 followed by Tommy Femia with "Judy Garland, Live!" at 11:00 pm. Now if this combo of events doesn't get me my "groove back," nothing will!

See you on Monday.

STU'S PICKS - NYC CABARET IN THE SEVERAL DAYS

A thrilling time in NYC cabaret continues into next week! Having seen most of the shows on the cabaret schedules, I would be hard pressed to pick out a single one!
THURSDAY AUGUST 16th:
DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ) - 6:00 pm - SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX with Broadway Musical Maven Seth Rudetsky. His guest interviewees tonight are Mary Testa & Jackie Hoffman. All proceeds go to BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS (http://www.bcefa.org/ )

THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) - 7:30 pm - Jazz singer/pianist Patti Wicks is performing for one night only so here's your chance to catch some jazz that stresses the lyric not just the harmonies - the way I feel jazz should be presented. She's not just "a member of the band" - she is the band, since she's at the piano with just a bass as back up. A true treat - don't miss her.

FRIDAY AUGUST 17th:
THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/theater/schedule ) - 10:30 pm - Brandon Cutrell hosts AFTER PARTY, a free-wheeling open-mic with guest stars from Broadway and Cabaret, Ray Fellman at the piano and Lisa Asher and others serving up drinks and taking turns at the mic. For some strange reason I find myself there nearly every Friday night. Oh, and if you are a member of AA, stay away. The beers, cocktails and shots flow freely here. Guest performer this week is Telly Leung, currently appearing in RENT.

SATURDAY AUGUST 18th:
DON'T TELL MAMA - 8:30 pm - POOLE PARTY with hosts Ron Poole and Darlene Violette and some of the funniest guys and gals in the standup comedy world and Sidney Myer too! You will usually find me here at one or both of these shows. The jokes a sometimes old, sometimes new, sometimes "borrowed" and sometimes a lighter shade of blue. But everyone has fun, including the bald guy in the front row that only laughs when Michael Brill is at the mic.

DON'T TELL MAMA - 11:00 pm - Award-winning impersonator Tommy Femia returns with his wildly popular, after-theater show "Judy Garland LIVE!", for this one night only in August, with David Maiocco at the piano. Each show features a special guest performer from cabaret, comedy or Broadway. If you have actually ever seen Judy Garland perform live you will be blown away by Tommy's impersonation. If you haven't seen Judy Garland perform live, come to this show and you will see as close to the real thing as is humanly possible. You will come away a believer. No one does it better!

SUNDAY AUGUST 19th
BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - http://www.birdlandjazz.com/ ) - 7:00 pm - IT'S JEST JAZZ starring Joan Crowe & Sue Matsuki. The show will also feature the funny song stylings of bass player, world renowned, Master Jazz Jester, Jay Leonhart. Tedd Firth is on piano and jazz great, Matt Wilson on drums. While I haven't actually seen this show, I've seen both gals in action often, sometimes on the same bill. These terrific singers also know how to have fun! It should be a history-making event.

MONDAY AUGUST 20th:
BIRDLAND - 10:30 pm - Jim Caruso's CAST PARTY is here every Monday night, with open-mic and a mixed bag of great, not so great and never-will-be-great talent taking turns on stage. I haven't been there in a while - I get up at 6:00 am on Mondays to write the newsletter and by 10:30 pm I am usually back home, but it remains one of the hottest weekly events in town.

Now this is all just a sampling, and just lists shows and/or performers I have actually seen - there are another few dozen shows in town I haven't seen that probably would be listed if I had!

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form, in chronological order where possible, and linked to a full article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website.

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing. Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to be sure that these discounts will be honored. Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about other shows around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website.

By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. And, please, please don't send in your press release with all those annoying html links (with embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.), or simply a .jpg of your post card or as one of those "e-vite" things that require me to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. Just send in your press release or listings request in simple .txt format (the format I write these issues in and use for the website).

IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your membership donations make this all possible.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
