) presents "Jazzin' The Cabaret," a cabaret celebration, on Sunday,
October 14th at 7:00 pm at THE PARK WEST (322 West Armitage, Chicago,
IL - TKTS: 312-409-3106 -
http:www.chicagocabaret.org/ ) -
pre-show entertainment from 6:15 till 7:00 pm. This spectacular evening
will honor Joe Vito, Dave Green and Dave Frishberg with Lifetime Achievement
Awards and will feature a Special Gold Coast Award honor to Judy Roberts.
The cast is made up of members of Chicago Cabaret
Professionals including Tracy Adams, Anne Burnell, Mark Burnell,
Keely Nicole Busteed, Amy Cole, Joan Curto, Elizabeth Doyle, David
Edelfelt, Laura Freeman, Carla Gordon, Paul Marinaro, Nan Mason,
KT McCammond, Tom Michael, Holly McGuire, Bob Moreen, Daryl Nitz,
Jimmy Odom, Suzanne Petri, Kat Taylor, Brad Thacker, 3Girls3, Carolyn
Wehner and Robert Whorton. Musical director is Beckie Menzie.
Dave Frishberg is an American jazz pianist, vocalist
and composer born in St. Paul, Minnesota, perhaps best-known for
his work with Ben Webster, Gene Krupa, Bud Freeman, Eddie Condon,
Al Cohn and Zoot Sims . He has become best known for writing and
performing his own songs including favorites "My Attorney Bernie,"
"Do You Miss New York," "Slappin' the Cakes on Me" and "Van Lingle
Mungo, " the lyrics of which entirely consist of the names of old-time
baseball players. Many of his songs have been performed by artists
such as Rosemary Clooney, Anita O'Day, Michael Feinstein, Diana
Krall, Stacey Kent, John Pizzarelli and Mel Torme.
Joe Vito was born in Chicago, Joseph Vito started
formal training at age seven. After earning a Bachelor's degree
in music composition from DePaul University, Vito entered the Navy,
where his interest in jazz began. Vito later worked as a studio
musician at CBS, and in the 1960s freelanced as pianist, orchestra
leader, and conductor; playing many radio and TV commercial spots.
Since 1983 Vito has teamed up with jazz violinist, the late Johnny
Frigo, appearing at such venues as the North Sea Jazz Festival in
Holland, and the Umbrian Jazz Festivals in Perugia and Orvieto.
Vito also performs with Doc Severinsen in concerts with the Milwaukee
Symphony, Minneapolis Symphony, National Symphony (Washington, D.C.),
the Phoenix Symphony, the Colorado Symphony (Denver) and at Copley
Symphony Hall (San Diego, CA).
Dave Green, known as "The Chicago Piano Man," has
earned his title in every sense. Although internationally known,
Chicago has always remained his home base. Born and raised in Chicago,
Dave grew up learning from, and playing with, some of the greatest
music legends. He has entertained in many of Chicago's premier night
spots, including top hotels, restaurants, cabarets, show lounges,
private parties, and special events, as well as his own concerts.
He has appeared on, and been interviewed by, most of the major TV
networks and radio shows in Chicago. Dave Green's unique style,
rare class of talent, and personal charm (including the trademark
derby hat) have earned him the respect of fellow entertainers, the
affection of audiences, and the recognition of entertainment columnists
everywhere.
Pianist/vocalist Judy Roberts recorded her first album
with Ray Brown at the age of eighteen, and has gone on to become
a multiple Grammy nominee with twenty successful releases to date.
She has performed at clubs, concerts and festivals worldwide, and
her music and recordings are known internationally. The winner of
numerous jazz polls and awards, she has been number one in both
radio airplay and on the Billboard charts, and has been a frequent
guest on NPR's "Piano Jazz" hosted by Marian McPartland. Named "Chicago's
Favorite Jazz Woman," Judy continues to perform and record from
her home-bases of Chicago/Arizona, and around the world.
Tickets: $45 Reserved seating at booths and tables,
$25 Open bar/balcony seating. After October 12th tickets are only

HERE & THERE
Several have written regarding the funeral service for John Wallowitch,
who passed away on Wednesday that was scheduled for Friday and mentioned
in various obituaries. As per his instructions, John was cremated
and will be buried in Brooklyn with his longtime companion Bertram
Ross. A small prayer mass attended by a few close friends and family
was held at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Arrangements are pending regarding
a memorial in about two weeks. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE will keep you
informed regarding the memorial service.
John Hoglund's AFTER DARK column, which was posted
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website late Friday includes a lengthy
remembrance of John Wallowitch's life and career. See: http://www.svhamstra.com/REVNY070817.shtml
Lessons From Life Department: I went grocery shopping on Saturday
and was suddenly struck with a jolt of nostalgia by a box of crackers.
They were the brand/style of crackers that my mom always seemed to
have around the house. A look at the label reminded me of how buttery,
crispy and tasty they were - with just a hint of saltiness. Not as
strong-flavored as a RITZ cracker, yet more buttery and flavorful
than a saltine. I always found them irresistible, one of those "bet
you can't eat just one" foods. And they were on sale - who could stop
me?
Carrying my groceries back to the apartment I looked
forward in mouth-watering anticipation to opening the box, tearing
open the wax paper and savoring my oval-shaped prizes. Putting away
the stuff that needed refrigeration, I walked hurriedly to my room,
can of diet pepsi in one hand and the box of crackers in the other.
Excitedly I took my first cracker out of the box and let it melt
on my tongue. What happened? Where was the flavor I was expecting?
Had my memories exaggerated the taste? Had they changed the recipe?
The label seemed to be the same. Certainly the manufacturer was
the same. But the cracker? More like lightly salted cardboard than
the taste I remembered.
Life is like a box of crackers. It seems you can never
go back - what you remember as happening (fortunately, actually)
is always far better than what actually happened. Time goes on,
and one must move on as well. We have just gone through (or maybe
more accurately are going through) some major changes in cabaret
- especially here in NYC. The closing of ROSE'S TURN (former home
of THE DUPLEX) a few weeks ago, followed so closely by the death
of cabaret icon John Wallowitch last week, has us all reeling. If
only one could turn back the clock - go back to the old days.
But such thinking is futile - and doomed to be as
disappointing as a stale-tasting box of crackers. So many wonderful
and new things are already in place or coming soon. I've been to
several cabaret performances of late where the rooms were packed
to capacity - in mid-August! And new faces are appearing - on stage
and in the audiences. DILLON'S, under the direction of long-time
cabaret manager/performer Scott Barbarino is promising to fill the
mid-town void left when DANNY'S closed, and Phil Bond continues
to recreate THE LAURIE BEECHMAN into one of NYC's more important
mid-town cabaret venues.
There's talk of another new cabaret space in town,
and also talk of a change of ownership of a popular club that might
bring about long-needed refurbishing. The opening of THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM under the inspired management of Lennie Watts and support of
the Mazzilli brothers has to some extent redefined cabaret in this
town, and the other rooms have followed suit and have begun to stress
quality of performance in order to compete. Thomas Honeck has transformed
THE DUPLEX cabaret room into a space that is setting attendance
records featuring established, well known performers while giving
newcomers a supportive space in which to perform. Veteran cabaret
booking manager Sidney Myer at DON'T TELL MAMA is without peer in
the field of discovering new talent, while continuing to provide
a home for top quality acts with music from rock to opera.
Cabaret isn't dead - it isn't even dying. Instead
it is adjusting to the times, reflecting the tastes and preferences
of today's audiences - just as cabaret always has done. Cabaret
is an art form that stresses connection between performer and audience,
and as the audiences change, as neighborhoods change, as tastes
change, cabaret changes.
For example, the ethnic makeup of NYC has changed
considerably in the 30 years that I have lived in town, and even
in the 17+ years since I have been covering and writing cabaret.
It is exciting to see more Asian, Hispanic and Black performers
appearing in the cabaret rooms (there is still plenty of improvement
due, but there is a trend starting) - and more of an ethnic mix
in the audiences as well. A new era is dawning in cabaret - rather
than its demise we should recognize its transformation.
I hope to be around another 17+ years writing about
this amazing and resilient art form as it continues to delight and
excite the generations to come. Great things are in store for cabaret!

Well, there is a lot of news to report on this morning - a while back
we had to split our newsletter from once a week to twice a week because
they were getting so long. Anyone who thinks that cabaret is a waning
art form, take a look at the cabaret news items below - from Australia,
Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Pennsylvania, Florida,
South Africa and more.
I already have a passel of news items for the mid-week
issue lined up and formatted, with no space in this one left. And
a few more arrived just in the past hour. See you then!

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
Information about other shows around the country and around the world
can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
website . How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section
of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release
of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your
show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in
jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information
- and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference
to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from
the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four
or more paragraphs.
If you don't have a press release, just click here:
http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format (the format I write these issues in and use
for the website). And, please, please don't send, instead of a press
release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links
(with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.)
Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one
of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and
lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them!
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please
keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about
their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show
is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also
posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places
where the show information can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership
