HERE & THERE
It is amazing how many news items I received over the past few days - I am only able to cover the releases received through September 15th in this issue - I'll try to get caught up through the 30th of September on Monday. Today we have items about cabaret events in San Francisco, New Hope PA, New Orleans, Natick MA, Los Angeles, Hull MA, Chicago and more - in addition to a number of items about events in NYC. Because of the large number of items received, we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the news as well - I'm not going to include an October item unless it is a major event until about mid-September.

There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule - if the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in each MONDAY issue of the newsletter, and if the event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in the DISCOUNTS section of each MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter. We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like. And major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.

My suggestion is to check over each issue before sending me a note asking why your item did not appear in a particular issue - it happened 4 times after the Monday issue went out, and each time I referred the writer to the issue of last week Thursday where the items were included.

I took my friend Daniel to check out RITA MAE'S (531 Hudson Street, NYC - 212-929-3343 - http://www.rubyfruitnyc.com/ ) on Monday night, and we both had a great time. Stephen Bocchino was at the piano with Kathy Kaefer serving and Jonathan Tomaselli behind the bar - and both taking turns at the mic. By the way, all three are actually veterans from the now closed HELEN'S, so not just the former employees of the now closed ROSE'S TURN can be found here - even Rick Collar (who actually was a bartender at the old 5 OAKS) can be found here as well. By the way, we sampled the food here too - I tried the Club Wrap (chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo) and Daniel had the Coconut Fried Shrimp - both were delectable. The items on the snack menu in the piano bar are reasonably priced - burger & fries for $10, for example (a welcome fact given my "summer" budget). I recognized many familiar faces at the bar and at the tables - and even Gaylin English, another HELEN'S veteran, dropped by for a while. Great fun, and those who get shouldered aside at other open-mic spots around town will find this nightspot very singer friendly!

The fall schedules from the clubs are beginning to come in - I will try to put together a rundown of some of the major shows at as many clubs as I get schedules from in the Monday issue. Please note that - as announced at the top of this issue - there will be only one issue the week of September 2nd - no MONDAY issue (Monday is LABOR DAY that week, which contrary to its name means no labor that day unless you work in retail sales). I will attempt to put out the MID-WEEK issue on Wednesday instead of Thursday that week.

A SILVER membership donation to support the newsletter and the website is just $20 - less than 40 cents a week - or 20 cents an issue. But your $20 donation would mean a lot to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE this month. The need right now is critical - there are just five paid rotating banners running currently - with 2 set to expire this weekend - for the next two weeks there will be only 3 banners running - and all paid for and moneys spent. To stay afloat we need to have about 12 to 15 banners running. I am counting on you for your support this week. 1 out of 10 subscribers has joined as a member for 2007-2008. If you appreciate these newsletters, the 6000+ page website and all the other things we are doing for cabaret and are among the 90% of subscribers who have not joined, please support our efforts to promote the art and artists of cabaret by joining as a member today. Click the button JOIN HERE at the top of every page on the website for information on membership choices and benefits. You can join instantly by credit card using PayPal or by check. Please remember, all checks should be made out simply to STU HAMSTRA and mailed to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036.

MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) has announced the candidates for the five open seats on its 2007-2008 MAC Board of Directors. The newly elected Directors will sit on the Board along with the Directors whose terms expire next year. These include Scott Barbarino, Hector Coris, Cynthia Crane, Kevin Kennison, Peter Leavy, Sidney Myer, and Ricky Ritzel. Candidates for the empty seats are: Jan Grossberg*, Deborah Held, Ruth Kurtzman*, Joseph Macchia, Eric Pickering and Peter Rapanaro (* incumbent). Retiring members, not seeking reelection are Gregory Kennell and Richard Skipper. Ballots will be mailed to all current members of MAC on the weekend of August 25th to be returned before September 20th. The names of the newly elected Directors will be announced at the MAC Annual Meeting to be held on Tuesday, September 25th at 6:00 pm (location to be announced.)

By the way, if you are planning on entering your name on the preliminary ballot for the 2008 MAC Awards, be sure to read the new eligibility rules - especially the major changes on the number of performances necessary to be a nominee. You have only about 4 months left this year to complete the necessary number of performances. For most performance categories, MAC members must have given at least FIVE eligible performances within the eligibility year (January 1st - December 31st, 2007). At least THREE of the eligible performances must have taken place in the greater New York Metropolitan area (within a 90-mile radius of New York City). Non-MAC members must have had a total of at least FIVE eligible performances in one or more MAC member clubs located in the greater New York Metropolitan area. These are major changes to last year's requirements. Check the MAC website (http://www.macnyc.com/ ) for all details.

Well, now I must close off and get this newsletter on its way to you. There have been a spate of new subscribers this past week - and from all over the country, so the reason for the jump in numbers is hard to explain. And, in spite of it being summer, visits to the website are now averaging 7,000 unique readers per day instead of the usual 6,000 - nearly a 20% increase! We are very close to reaching the 300-member mark, and hopefully we will surpass 300 by Labor Day (September 3rd). I am making some plans for the fall myself, and look forward to your comments and suggestions as we seek to do a better job of promoting and supporting the art and the artists of cabaret.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form, in chronological order where possible, and linked to a full article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website.

Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to be sure that these discounts will be honored. Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
Information about cabaret events around the country and around the world can be found on the CABARET NEWS page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website. How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website? Just e-mail me a press release of at least four paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs.

IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike.

One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website, using a credit card. Just click on the button at the top of every page of the website marked JOIN HERE. Or you can mail your check, made out simply to Stu Hamstra to 75-22 37th Avenue #35 - Jackson Heights, NY 11372. Memberships are available at several levels with varying benefits. Basic membership (which can be upgraded at any time with full credit) is $20 (SILVER). You membership dollars support the website, the newsletter, the blog and other activities of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as it promotes the art and artists of cabaret.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
