TODAY'S TOP STORY

NYC CABARET BIG-3 ANNOUNCE FALL SCHEDULES
Summer doesn't end until late September but in the worlds of cabaret and fashion in the USA it usually means after Labor Day, which this year falls on Monday, September 3rd. It is the time to pack away into storage the "summer whites" and break out the pastels and earth tones of Autumn. And time for NYC's "Big-3" cabaret rooms to reopen their doors after their summer holidays.

THE ALGONQUIN OAK ROOM (59 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-419-9331 - http://www.algonquinhotel.com/nav_oakroom_cabaret.html ) kicks off its new season on Tuesday, September 5th, with legendary showman Steve Ross and his new show "A Good Thing Going." Steve will be on stage here, Tuesdays through Saturdays through September 15th. He is followed by KT Sullivan who will be appearing September 18th through October 13th. Paula West flies in from the West Coast to appear here October 16th through November 10th, with Andrea Marcovicci closing out the year - and moving into the winter season - from November 13th through January 12th, 2008. "Barbara Carroll's Sunday Jazz Brunch" returns on as well, with brunch served starting at noon, with Barbara at the piano starting at 2:00 pm. See the website for exact showtimes, cover and minimum charges.

THE CAFE CARLYLE (35 East 76th Street, NYC - 212-744-1600 - http://www.thecarlyle.com/entertainment.cfm ) opens on Tuesday, September 18th, much closer to the actual start of Fall, with the incomparable Eartha Kitt through October 27th. Steve Tyrell moves into the room on October 30th and continues through December 31st. Mondays Woody Allen and the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band are here from the 17th of September through December 10th. See the website for exact showtimes, cover and minimum charges.

FEINSTEIN'S at the Regency Hotel (540 Park Avenue, NYC - 212-339-4095 - http://www.feinsteinsattheregency.com/ ) reopens from summer vacation on Tuesday, September 11th featuring Ashford & Simpson through the 29th. "RENDEZVOUS - An Evening With Piaf, Brel, Aznavour & Friends" which wowed the critics when it played at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM earlier this year is here for a 1-week run, October 2nd through 6th, followed by Amy Hanaiali'i with "Generation Hawaii" October 9th through 13th. Mary Cleere Haran with "Sings Doris Day" takes over the room from October 16th through 27th, followed by Chita Rivera with an all-new show November 6th through 24th. Michael Feinstein brings his annual holiday show to his namesake room November 27th through December 29th. The special Sunday and Monday Night Series are back as well, featuring a new performer each week. See the website for exact showtimes, cover and minimum charges.

As with all live entertainment events, scheduled performers are subject to change without notice.

HERE & THERE
It looks like it is going to be a slow week - which is quite typical for this time of year, and not just for cabaret. It is that time of year when parents get their kids ready to go back to school (in most instances an expensive proposition, soaking up a lot of cash and credit limits that might be otherwise spent on entertainment). The older young people are off to college - or at least getting set to do so. Others are taking that last-week-of-summer fling at the beach or in the mountains or off to parts unknown.

Even the number of real e-mails I usually receive daily is down from the norman 60-to-80 to only 10 or 12. I can't say the same about junk and spam mail - it has increased by nearly double for some reason.

When I look over the cabaret schedules from today through next Tuesday I see a lot of open slots. For example THE DUPLEX is "dark" until Thursday, and the first show in September isn't until the 6th. The METROPOLITAN ROOM is dark from Friday the 31st through Tuesday the 4th. THE WESTBANK/BEECHMAN takes a break from the 1st through the 4th, while DON'T TELL MAMA has cabaret events every night except the holiday on Monday. Of course piano bars, including the ones at THE DUPLEX and MAMA'S will be alive and jumping - especially over the weekend. New Yorkers may flee the city on Labor Day weekend, but out in Queens there is the annual tennis tournament that draws folks from all over the world to the Big Apple, and tourists seem to love piano bars.

Well, over the weekend we signed on our 300th member and she happens to be an old pal of mine from the days when I visited Cape Cod annually, Patricia Fitzpatrick. Pat was on the Provincetown Tourist Board when I was out there and actually made her return to live performing at one of the CABARETFEST events. She now is very much involved in cabaret on The Cape and the greater Boston area, and will be coming to NYC in a few weeks to perform in her own show on November 2nd & 3rd at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 1-212-757-0788 - http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/ ). Pat recently lost her husband and I am so happy to see her resuming her cabaret performances - her show is aptly titled "Single, Again .... and this time it's not my fault." More on this to come in a future issue - November is a long way off.

So we made 300 members by Labor Day - dare we shoot for 400 members by Columbus Day? (October 8th) It is all up to you, folks. There are over 2,700 subscribers to this twice-weekly newsletter - with just 300 folks "footing the bill." If you truly enjoy these newsletters, if you fully appreciate what CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is all about, if you really want to support us in our efforts to expand and promote the art - and the artists of cabaret, now is the time to send us your support by joining this week - a basic SILVER membership is only $20, but that $20 means so much to me - and the performers we write about, and have been writing about for over 17 years. Click the button JOIN HERE at the top of every page on the website for information on membership choices and benefits. You can join instantly by credit card using PayPal or by check. Please remember, all checks should be made out simply to STU HAMSTRA and mailed to 75-22 37th Avenue #35 - Jackson Heights, NY 11372.

I attended another wild AFTER PARTY on Friday night at THE WEST BANK/LAURIE BEECHMAN, hosted by the unpredictable (and talented - this kid can sing!) Brandon Cutrell and what a night it was! First off the talent that this young man brings to the open mic is amazing - many of them performers currently appearing on Broadway. They are mostly young, full of spark and sparkle and give their all to put on a grand show. Once in a while a performer even gets carried away "in the moment," so to speak - as happened this past Friday. His song/dance routine had the audience overcome with "shock and awe." He gave his all - and had so much to give! Much fun! My advice, if you want to get a seat at these no-cover events, is to get there early (10:30 pm or so), or get there late (the crowd begins to thin out around 12:30 am). I got there last week around 12:15 am and actually had to stand for about 20 minutes until a table opened up. The show goes on until either Brandon runs out of performers on his list or runs out of audience to listen. Lots of drinking going on, and this is certainly for the over-21 crowd only, but even old timers like me can't stay away. Great fun, and Lisa Asher too! (Brandon: you owe me a CD - never got one!)

On Thursday night I was back at UNCLE CHARLIE'S for another Thursday Uncle Charlies No-Cover Cabaret show, this one featuring the very lovely and talented Blythe Gruda. Host David Pellegrene presents a new performer weekly, but this gal is so fantastic he has invited her back for more shows later in the year. These events have become so popular, the management is actually expanding the piano bar/cabaret are another 5 feet into the back garden to accommodate the audience. And David plans to soon expand the series to two nights a week. And Ms. Gruda is a gal to keep an eye on - her vocals are unbelievable, a real belting Broadway voice with energy and charm as well. And stick around after the show for the open mic - David hosts open mic here Thursdays through Saturdays starting around 9:30 pm - for some really great talent including shy singer/waiter Jacob Coronado. Check it out this week and say "Stu sent you." Take along your music and do a song or two.

Except for one item that just came in about 10 minutes ago I have below included all the news items about shows through the 15th of September that I had in my "inbox." Please remember that there will be only one issue next week - the MONDAY issue and the MID-WEEK issue will be combined and sent out Wednesday or Thursday. I am planning my annual Island Vacation - traveling by subway and ferry from Manhattan Island to Coney Island to Staten Island and back. I had to forego the expedition earlier this year for some reason or other (I forgot - maybe it was raining).

That's about it for this issue - I have a few more words to say way down at the end of the page - and it is exactly 12:00 noon! (I always write this section last). How is that for timing! More on Thursday.

SECOND SUPER SIDE-BAR AD AVAILABLE ON OVER 1000 PAGES
Several folks have asked if there was a way that their ad could be seen on every page of the website, all the time. With over 5000 pages on the site it would be impossible, now, thanks to some re-coding of current and future pages it is possible for a side-bar ad (in the right column on the pages "above the fold" except for the opening page) to be seen on over 1000 pages - all the time. Only two SUPER SIDEBAR ADS will be available per week. One of these SUPER SIDE-BAR ads - twice the size (vertical) of regular side-bar ads is now available. There is a 2-week minimum. Ads appear in the right sidebar at the top two positions - first ordered and paid goes in the top "Tiffany" position. In addition, SUPER SIDEBAR advertisers will have their offering mentioned in the MONDAY issue of CABARET HOTLINE. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website for details on all sizes, styles and specs.

SPONSORING ON THE TOWN WITH JOHN HOGLUND

AFTER DARK COLUMN SPONSORSHIP AVAILABLE AFTER SEPT 30th

Only ONE sponsoring ad is available each week. There are usually 4 or 5 pages to each column, so your ad will be displayed again and again (not in random rotation) on all pages in the section, currently 32 pages. If you would like information on sponsoring this section send me an e-mail. The sponsor also will have their ad displayed on the home page of the website below the regular SIDE BAR ads. 2-week minimum. Events advertised on the website will be mentioned in every MONDAY issue, and events offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE are mentioned in every MIDWEEK issue.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.

Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release than to hunt and google websites for more information.

We usually run articles about 3 weeks before event date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:

â If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in each MONDAY issue of the newsletter

â If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in the DISCOUNTS section of each MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.

âMajor benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.

We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.

IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places where the show information can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make this all possible.

One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/ ), using a credit card. Just click on the button at the top of every page of the website marked JOIN HERE. Or you can mail your check, made out simply to Stu Hamstra to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036. Memberships are available at several levels with varying benefits. Basic membership (which can be upgraded at any time with full credit) is $20 (SILVER). You membership dollars support the website, the newsletter, the blog and other activities of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as it promotes the art and artists of cabaret.

A special thanks to a couple of folks who - even without realizing it - sort of "saved my life" last week. I was down to balance of $1.26 in the bank and about $40 in my pocket on Wednesday when the mail arrived with several membership checks and a wonderful donation from a loyal and current member. Not enough to pay my rent this week, but plenty enough to make me realize that prayers do get answered and angels are around us all the time - unawares, as they say. It has been a really tough and stress-filled summer and it will take us a while to get back to the point we can relax, but our faith remains unshaken - our faith in ourselves, our faith in our friends, and our faith in He who watches over us. The sparrow is never out of His sight.

And that is just about the way it was.

Hugs & Stuff,

STU
