HERE & THERE
It has been an exhausting
week so far. It seems that every time I open my e-mail another 10
press releases fall out! I tried very hard today to get all the items
and articles received for events up to the 20th of October up and
running on the website and included in this newsletter - but I could
only get to the 15th and one or two for the 16th. There are 18 more
items to post in order to catch up just to the 20th! Who says that
cabaret is on the wane?
Meantime the weather forecasts call for a really warm
weekend with temperatures into the upper 80s. Last week had me digging
out my sweaters and jackets, this week I am back to short sleeves.
I vote for clearly defined seasons.
CORRECTION (OR ACTUALLY
A CANCELLATION) - Last issue we related a note from Mr. Ruby Rims
about the return of TEDDYCARE, with events planned for December at
the JUDSON MEMORIAL CHURCH in the Village. Turns out the church had
their December schedule in a state of confusion and notified Ruby
that the dates were no longer available. So no TEDDYCARE again this
year - understandably Ruby is quite disappointed and discouraged by
this turn of events.
By the way, you have one
more chance to catch Aaron's show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West
22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/
) this Sunday October 7th at 7:00 pm. His new show is called "Dreamscape"
and is an amazing new style for Aaron. He is backed by an terrific
band led by Erik James, with backup singers and a guest appearance
by Carolyn Eufrasio of Shimmerplanet. The show is non-stop excitement
from beginning to end, with some new songs not usually heard in cabaret
plus some new looks at old standards. This is a definite "go see"
- just two performances is not enough for such a great show and I
hope it gets several more performances in the months to come.
Be sure to check out the
latest new feature on the website - CABARET DIARY (click on the button
so marked at the top of every page). This is a complete collection
of all cabaret event items published in these newsletters in date
order. So you can see at a glance what is going on where each day
of the week (at least if I heard about the event). There are links
to longer articles about the events where available. As a week ends,
the items of that week are lopped off the top, and new items continue
to be added as we find out about them.
This weekend we are planning
a major overhaul of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE WEB BLOG which really
has been a neglected orphan lately. All the old items will be deleted,
and we plan on a fresh new look and a new beginning. The current (or
actually past system, since nothing has been posted for some time)
was entirely too much work, so I have a new design and a new format
- stay tuned.
The newsletters have been
undergoing a design/format change as well (I am sure you noticed)
and now on Monday the 8th, we will be changing the layout in an attempt
to make the issues a little shorter and eliminate duplication of news
items. From now on the MONDAY issue will look a little more like the
MIDWEEK issue since we will be eliminating the special SPONSOR'S section.
Instead of all the banner and side-bar advertisers listed near the
top of the issue, the items advertised will be distributed in date
order. But now the news items for advertisers will be included in
EVERY issue - MONDAY & MIDWEEK, rather than just in the MONDAY issue.
We surpassed the 360 mark
and are still going for 400 members by Columbus Day (October 8th)
just 4 days away and 40 members to signup. If you have hesitated to
join in the past, follow the lead of Craig Coursey and join us this
year. A basic SILVER membership is a mere $20 and if you enjoy these
newsletters (since you have read this far I assume you do), why not
show your appreciation and support by joining today? Just click on
the JOIN HERE button at the top of every page of the website for details
- you can even join instantly using a credit card and PayPal. Please
remember, all checks should be made out simply to STU HAMSTRA and
mailed to 75-22 37th Avenue #35 - Jackson Heights, NY 11372. Hey, we're only
talking $20 here - yet it would mean a lot more to me, I assure you.
I'm still waiting for the
next installment of John Hoglund's AFTER DARK column, but in the meantime,
I want to clarify one thing: John is a free-lance writer and I do
not - and actually should not - tell him who or what to write about.
In fact, except for an occasional typo I might find, I don't change
a word of what he sends me. So, if you want to invite John to your
show or to listen to your CD, you need to contact him. Realize also
that right now he is "up to his ears" in two or three special projects
that demand a lot of his time and attention - hopefully in a month
or so there will be less demand on his time and energy. By the way,
sponsorship of the AFTER DARK section will be available after October
14th - your SUPER-SIDEBAR ad will appear on all pages of the AFTER
DARK section plus on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE home page - and displayed
every time, not at random. The AFTER DARK section is the most popular
and most read section of the website after the MESSAGE BOARD.
Do I dare "go for four"
tonight? Here's my datebook entries for today: 6:00 pm at DON'T TELL
MAMA for Seth Rudetsky's BROADWAY CHATTERBOX - guest is Brian Stokes
Mitchell. 7:00 pm a few blocks away at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN for Alice
Frazier's "Broadway Without Boundaries" show. Then at 8:15 pm, Jacob
Coronado's show at David Pellegrene's "No Cover Cabaret" at UNCLE
CHARLIE'S (I expect I will be late) and finally at 10:00 pm, Barbara
Brussell's highly recommended new show "Out Of The Mouths of Babes"
show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM. Fortunately Barb's show (which is the
talk of the town) plays every Thursday through November 1st - if I
fall behind schedule I can catch her show next week and check out
Ray Jessel's show at DON'T TELL MAMA at 11:00 pm instead. Paramedics,
please stand by.
Now that we are fast approaching
the 400 member mark, more performers should consider offering discounts
to their shows for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members. Not only do you
get a free listing on the DISCOUNTS page on the website - the third
most popular section after the MESSAGE BOARD and the AFTER DARK sections,
and not only do you have your show promoted in every MIDWEEK issue
of the newsletter, but you also now have chance to snag Craig "always
looking for a bargain" Coursey in your audience! (Attention cabaret
wait staff: he's a big tipper (or is it "tippler"?) so treat him well.
Note to piano bar lovers
- do not - DO NOT - ask Bobby Peaco to play Billy Joel's "Piano Man."
Some drunk did so the other night at DON'T TELL MAMA and was soon
escorted from the bar. He don't know it - he don't play it. Be warned.
Well, here I am, sitting
at the computer, finishing off the newsletter and eating cold left-over
Mexican food from dinner last night - unshaven and still in my PJs.
I am so happy I don't have a web cam here - and believe me, you should
be happy you don't have to see this as well! Its time to go.
Big thanks
to the folks that joined and bought banners this week - we're in
that period between paying the rent and awaiting the check from
Social Security, and every penny is appreciated. There are 40 folks
out there that can really make my weekend by joining as members
- I am counting on you!
See you
all on Monday!
NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT
CABARET SHOWS AND STUFF
In an effort to cut down
on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered
by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change
regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the
newsletter in abbreviated form, in chronological order where possible,
and linked to a full article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate
location on the website.

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing
on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send in your flier, press release
and/or other promotional materials clearly showing the discount offer.
That information will be used as the basis for the MEMBER DEALS page
notice, as well as for the newsletter listing. Please be sure to check
with the venue where you are performing to be sure that these discounts
will be honored. Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee
that the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact
the parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove
the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.
ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE
NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item
posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website
and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.
Just e-mail
me a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the
complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related
event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please
send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy
of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually
trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before
using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count
them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. If you don't
have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use
the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.
Just send
in your press release or listings request in simple txt format if
possible (the format I write these issues in and use for the website),
and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail.
And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one
of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns,
embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply
a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things
that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere.
I never open them! The more information the better - it is easier
for me to trim the release than to hunt and google websites for
more information.
We usually
run articles about 3 weeks before event date if possible so it is
wisest to send your release about 4 weeks in advance. Because of
the large number of items received, we can only use news of event
just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the news. There
are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:
> If the
event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in each MONDAY
issue of the newsletter
> If the
event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it
will be included in the DISCOUNTS section of each MID-WEEK issue
of the newsletter.
> Major
benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named will
be mentioned in every issue as well as major cabaret events like
cabaret festivals and galas.
We also
include at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly,
etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S
BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.
COLUMBUS DAY INFORMATION
FOR MONDAY OCTOBER 8th
Monday, October 8th (the
second Monday in October) is celebrated in the USA as Columbus Day.
Manhattan will be especially busy traffic-wise because of the annual
parade so be advised to use mass transit if at all possible. This
particular holiday usually does not disrupt live entertainment events,
but phone ahead just to be sure.
IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter
I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find
published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?
I realize that there is
probably far more information here than you might be able to digest
in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned,
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread
the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about
their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published
is also posted on my website means another place where they can be
found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike.
One more reminder - all
current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE expired on Thursday,

SPECIAL NOTE: To the creep
that keeps posting disgusting items on the MESSAGE BOARD - you tipped
your hand and now I know who you are - and believe me, you need help
(something I've known all along)! Your messages will never be displayed,
just deleted. Quit wasting your time and my time, get back on your
medication and get a life! Keep it up and I'll tell the world all
about you (but most of them already know).
And that is just about
the way it was. Now for a few TUMS and a good long nap - I have a
lot to do tonight!
