HERE & THERE
Oh What a Night! Look what's going on in NYC tonight, and I have to
choose! At DON'T TELL MAMA, Gretchen Reinhagen is doing her terrific
"Back to Basics" show at 9:00 pm, preceded by the delightful Tanya
Moberly's "Tanya Sings Jonatha Brooke" show at 7:00 pm. Meantime,
downtown at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM, Miles Phillips debuts his brand
new "Quiet Stars" show at 7:00 pm, followed by Jenna Esposito's CD
Release "13 Men ... and Me" show at 9:30 pm. And all four are running
banners on the website and I can only choose two!
Actually, I sort of planned ahead for this - I saw
Gretchen's show last week (and you must not miss this one!) and
I don't want to miss Tanya's show - this is the second for four
different Monday night shows - so I will go to MAMA'S at 7:00 pm
and then run downtown to Jenna's show at 9:30 pm (for this first
show of her run she is giving away a free CD to all attending).
Then next week Monday Miles' show is at 9:30 pm so I will return
to MAMA'S for Tanya's third show and head downtown next for Miles
at the METROPOLITAN ROOM.
Nightlife, Bistro and MAC award voters: All four of
these shows should be checked out - I have seen Gretchen's & Tanya's
shows and give 2 thumbs up to both. I fully expect Jenna and Miles
to continue their reputation for award-winning shows as well.
But there's more! Nightlife, Bistro and MAC award
voters check out the following:
Oh What a Weekend! I saw two glorious and fantastic
shows this weekend - Marcus Simeone's long awaited (he claims 20
years of waiting) debut CD release show on Friday night at THE LAURIE
BEECHMAN and Cynthia Crane's brand new "The Time Has Come" show
at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM on Sunday afternoon. Both shows were so
great in their own way it would be impossible to choose which one
I enjoyed more.
There is a "background" story to the Simeone CD. Several
years back there was a man on the cabaret scene by the name of John
Jerome who appeared out of nowhere and was throwing money around
like it was going out of style. He formed a company called JEROME
RECORDS and started signing up artists to record for his label -
Karen Mason, Jeff Harnar, Phillip Officer - to name a few. And the
last one to sign on was Marcus - except the contract arrived in
the mail for Marcus to sign on just about the same day that Mr.
Jerome (whose real name was John Loan) was arrested for alleged
embezzlement. Dreams gone up in smoke - for many in the cabaret
world, not just Mr. Simeone.
Then about a year ago, the CD that was released last
week was nearly ready for release in time for pre-Christmas sale,
but then a well known label came along, listened to the CD and loved
it and expressed interest in releasing as part of their catalog.
But a few changes had to me made, a redesign of the packaging, etc.
Things were put on hold and time passed, and passed. Then, for some
reason, after a long delay, they abruptly lost interest. Hopes were
dashed again until Kitty Scrobela got wind of the situation and
a new partnership was formed and the CD finally released under the
MIRANDA MUSIC label. As it says on the cover, "It's About Time!"
Now here is even a "further background" story. About
seven years or so ago I was sitting in the piano bar at DON'T TELL
MAMA when Shawn Moninger, who was at that time doing lights & sound
at MAMA'S, came over to me an said that he had just done the sound
check for someone in the cabaret room who would be performing in
a few minutes and he told me that I simply must come and hear this
voice and see this show. Rob LaRocco was musical director, and a
slightly younger Marcus was at the microphone, and I could not believe
what I heard - this amazing young man kept me spellbound for over
an hour. Over the years various folks have tried to temper and tinker
with Marcus' style and there have been shows I have seen him perform
that truly disappointed me. But Friday night the "old-young" Marcus
was back on stage and electricity filled the air. I will leave it
to others to write the details (Barry Levitt's great arrangements
and talented trio of instrumentalists, the great backup singing)
- all I can say is that if you want a thrill in live entertainment
that you will remember the rest of your life, head to THE BEECHMAN
on Friday the 19th at 8:00 pm for his second (and last) show of
the CD release series - and barring that, his CD is called "At Last"
and is available at MIRANDA MUSIC (http://www.mirandamusic.com/
) and at http://www.marcussimeone.com/
.
Remember, this is not your standard "cookie-cutter"
cabaret show. It is unabashed excitement all the way - eclectic
song choices sung by one of the finest and most thrilling voices
in cabaret. And just as with my other favorites, like Tom Andersen,
Scott Coulter to name just two, Marcus puts his heart and soul into
everything he sings. I could have listened all night!
Speaking of "cookie cutter" cabaret, aren't you sick and tired of
the way so many performers seem to have been put into the same mold,
using the same style, following the same tired old "formula" when
they do their cabaret shows? I call it "Connecticut-style" cabaret,
after a trend that began with a cabaret "intensive" program that had
its start in that fair state. To be a cabaret show, performers were
told, they had to follow a set of rules and meet a set of standards.
Else it wasn't cabaret.
All I can say is, balderdash! For me, the only rule
is that the show must be entertaining. Great vocals are important,
good song choices are a must, snappy patter a plus, but foremost
the show must be entertaining. Audience members are shelling out
a lot of money to be entertained, and they should get their money's
worth. Gretchen Reinhagen and Gary Negbaur, who I mentioned last
issue, know what I mean. And so does Marcus Simeone. And now I add
another name to the list: Cynthia Crane!
If you were at Cynthia's show on Sunday afternoon
at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM, and you happened to glance in my direction,
you probably saw something glowing - my face! For a full hour I
could not keep my eyes off the stage as this amazing lady kept us
enthralled and (here's that word again) entertained. As much an
actress as a singer, Ms. Crane gave us a lesson in how cabaret should
be done - so well crafted, so well delivered, so entertaining! Again,
several eclectic song choices (including a "moon" medley with not
a single "standard moon medley" song in the list!). And Paul Greenwood
at the piano is any singer's "secret advantage." The man is practically
invisible, yet you always know he is there through his creative
(yet not intrusive) arrangements. You have two more chances to catch
this show (unless Lennie Watts wisely finds some additional dates)
on the next two Sunday afternoons at 4:00 pm, October 21st & 28th.
I am going back - as much as I treasure my Sundays free of cabaret
- I am going back.
Expectations confirmed: I knew that once the long-time reluctant trend-setter
Craig Coursey would sign on as a 2007-2008 member of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE, all the rest of the "movers & shakers" in the world of live
entertainment would soon follow - and I was right. On Friday night
Don Schaffer, who is the booking manager of the new BROADWAY BABY
BISTRO & PIANO BAR at the BROADWAY COMEDY CLUB, set to open in Mid-November,
stopped me as I entered the LAURIE BEECHMAN for Marcus Simeone's CD
release show and thrust $20 in my hand to sign up on the spot. "I
see Craig Coursey signed on!" he exclaimed. "I can't be left in the
dust - add my name to the list!" he added. And later that same evening
as I was walking past DON'T TELL MAMA, uber-piano bar host Bobby Peaco
stuck his head out the door, called me over and handed me a $20-bill
and said "Sign me up. And be sure to tell Coursey - he's 'the man'
you know!" Over 375 folks have already signed up for the 2007-2008
membership year - and we are still shooting for that magic 400-member
goal. Then it will be on to a new record - in 2003-2004 we hit 426,
and that's the number we want to surpass. Less than 50 new members
will help us do just that.
I actually did a "triple header" on Saturday, catching San Diego vocalist
Devlin's "Wild Women" show at the METROPOLITAN ROOM at 5:00 pm, then
a quick trip uptown to see San Francisco resident but NY native Linda
Kosut's acclaimed tribute to Oscar Brown, Jr. at DILLON'S at 7:00
pm and then the POOLE PARTY at DON'T TELL MAMA at 8:30 pm - and I
still got home before 11:00 pm!
By the way, Ms. Kosut is not wasting any time while
in town: she is part of the MAC seminar on Tuesday night, she is
performing at the Barnes & Noble CD event on Wednesday night and
then at THE TRIAD on Wednesday night as part of Jazzaret.
Well, that's about it for today - there is a lot of exciting news
in the datebook below including the return of Rock Albers on Saturday
at THE DUPLEX followed by Karen Mack & Michael Holland in the same
club on Saturday with their "Hole-O-Matic" show after several months
off. There is news of the festival at TOWN HALL (somehow I fell off
of TOWN HALL'S press list, but Scott Coulter sent this item in about
opening night on Friday). And also on Saturday, Brandon & Ray are
having their annual birthday bash - in the dictionary when they define
the word "bacchanal" they show a photo of last year's party. And 95-year-old
Tony Martin opens for a 2-night run at FEINSTEIN'S on Sunday! (As
my friend Daniel would say, "If he can do it, why can't you do it!).
Your membership (or any donation) to CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE this week

the bill collectors are swarming again. You can join or make a contribution

Tune You" he imitates musical instruments and impersonates a couple
of well-loved public figures with hilarious results. With the aid
of an electronic gadget called a loop sampler, he literally backs
himself while mouth trumpeting and singing or playing sax and flute,
displaying amazing vocal gymnastics, featuring human beat box, farmyard
sounds, slide guitar, amongst others, combined with sax, flute and
percussion. When not performing, Chris takes people swimming with
dolphins. In recent years, you may have seen him alongside Steve Newman
and Tony Cox as a saxophonist, flautist and funny front man. Expect
one or two surprises from instruments you've probably never seen or
heard before. Call for cover/minimum information.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or
five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD
release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and
do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a
website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the
press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the
four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use
the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues
in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments,
not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send,
instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those
annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting
backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card.
Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click
to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The
more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release
than to hunt and google websites for more information.
We usually run articles about 2 to 3 weeks before
event date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about
4 weeks in advance. Because of the large number of items received,
we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too
far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once"
rule:
+++ If the event is advertised on the website it will
be repeated in every issue of the newsletter
+++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each MID-WEEK issue of the
newsletter.
+++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to
the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major
cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.
+++ We also include at least once each week those
regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each
performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY
SHOWCASE and the like.
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please
keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about
their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show
is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also
posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places
where the show information can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership
almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/
), using a credit card. Just click on the button at the top of every
page of the website marked JOIN HERE. Or you can mail your check,
made out simply to Stu Hamstra to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York,
NY 10036. Memberships are available at several levels with varying
benefits. Basic membership (which can be upgraded at any time with
full credit) is $20 (SILVER). You membership dollars support the website,
the newsletter, the blog and other activities of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.
Support CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE as it promotes the art and artists
of cabaret.
And that is just about the way it was.
