HERE & THERE
Oh how I hated to get up this morning. Cool, damp weather and a late
sunrise (those days are really getting shorter) along with a slightly
open window made it so nice and snug in my bed, when 7:00 am rolled
around, it was so very hard to get up. And lately, turning on my computer
and checking the website has been reason enough to stay in bed! For
the third night in a row I opened the day discovering that the MESSAGE
BOARD had been completely filled with spam messages overnight - over
90 messages each morning needing to be deleted. And twice this week
- including this morning - there was a message that when deleted totally
destroyed the index and I had to restore the board from a backup copy
made at midnight the night before! If you normally post messages overnight,
try to do your posting before midnight. And if you made a post last
night, check to board - it may no longer be there.
I am told that there is a spamming center in a central
European country where they hire folks very inexpensively to produce
spam messages and post them on any non-secure message board, blog
and e-mail address available. I believe this, given the inaccurate
spellings, poor grammar and extensive use of certain letters of
the alphabet. This morning, as I was deleting spam, two new items
were added for each item I removed - while I was right there watching!
The posters apparently get paid-per-post, so I may reconstruct the
board so that after each posting you are returned to my home page
and then have to click back to get to the message board. That would
cut their production in half at least. Anyone out there with any
other suggestions?
Ute Lemper fans might take note that next week she will be a DJ both
on 93.9FM WNYC in New York, or for the rest of the world on streaming
audio via http://www.wnyc.org/
on the web. She will be interviewed on the air Friday November 2nd
on "Soundcheck" from 2:00 to 3:00 and then give a live performance
each night Monday through Friday, November 5th through 9th from 7:00
pm until 11:00 pm on "Evening Music" where she'll spin her favorite
Berlin and Berlin-inspired music, from Marlene Dietrich to Tom Waits.
Check it out.
Save the date - if you are in the Chicago area - Monday, December
3rd. Thats when CCP (Chicago Cabaret Professionals - http://www.chicagocabaret.org/
) will hold their 9th annual "A Holiday Cabaret" at 7:30 pm at DAVENPORT'S
(1383 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, IL - 773-278-1830 - http://www.davenportspianobar.com/
). The show will benefit Teen Living Programs and Save The Children.
There was a time when cabaret organizations all over - including Australia
- held this annual event on behalf of children's' support programs,
but little by little interest waned (especially here in NYC after
9-11). I believe that CABARET WEST (http://www.cabaretwest.org/
) also continues this annual tradition. More details are coming.
Have a Christmas Holiday CD for sale? Every year we post a page showing
the CD covers of holiday CDs with a link to where they can be purchased.
I put up last year's HOLIDAY CD page over the weekend - please check
it out. If your HOLIDAY-THEMED CD isn't shown, send me an e-mail and
we will add it. And if your CD is shown but is no longer available
or has been reissued with a different cover (these things happen)
let me know as well. The link to the page is on the front or home
page on the website. This is a free listing - you don't need to be
a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to be included (but that sure would
be nice).
Here in NYC, piano bar entertainer/icon George Sanders reports that
the six-minute film/video "Sneaky Snake: Lost In The Holy Land" that
he and his partner Shawn Curran recently made is being shown in film
festivals all over the place. In this film, Sneaky Snake (a green
sock puppet who can often be found performing with George in the piano
bar at DON'T TELL MAMA) searches for a bacon-cheeseburger in Jerusalem.
Along the way he meets a Rabbi, a Priest and a Muslim, all wishing
to remove a piece of his anatomy. (Circumcision!) In an amazing tour-de-force
of acting, Sneaky plays all the roles. Filmed on location in Israel
(Shawn was cast in a McDonald's commercial that shot there). Bobby
Peaco wrote the music score for the film. It is currently being shown
at The Forster Film Festival in Forster, Australia, and next week
will be at the Williamstown, MA festival, The Indie Fest at Downtown
Disney, Anaheim, CA and The Vine Shorts Fest in Santa Monica, CA.
For those in the Chicago area, there is a NEW way that you can support
Carla Gordon's HEARTLAND CABARET cabaret review pages with a special
SUPER-SIDE-BAR ad - the best bargain of all our ad offerings. Just
two slots are available - exclusively - on these pages in the right
column. The ads only appear in this section, plus on all the MIDWEST
news pages and also on the home (opening) page of the website and
cost just $35 per week, 2-week minimum. After 2 weeks, cost drops
to $25 per week. (This is before any MEMBER discounts ). Here the
secret - a regular home page side-bar ad (1/2 the SUPER size - limited
to 5 per week) appearing on only the home page cost $25 per week with
no discounts allowed. All proceeds from these special HEARTLAND CABARET
ads will be used to support Carla as she covers the Chicago area for
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Write for details.
Another reminder: I need just 16 more members to join in the next
few days to make the magic 400 mark of 2007-2008 members. The record
number of members over the past 6 years was 426, and once we hit 400
that will be our next goal. If you have not joined or rejoined for
the new membership year which began on July 6, 2007, your membership
donation in the next few days would really mean a lot to me. There
are many folks who I have written about in this issue alone who have
not joined! A basic SILVER membership is just $20 - less than 50 cents
a week, less than 25 cents an issue. You can read about all the benefits
of membership by clicking on the button at the top of every page marked
JOIN HERE - there is even a link where you can pay instantly by credit
card using PayPal. Don't forget, membership is recommended by Craig
Coursey - what better recommendation is there than that? I am counting
on you.
There is so much news in this issue I will have to quit here before
I get a lot of "mailbox full" bounce backs. There are 70 news items
below covering over 200 cabaret events and over 500 performers! For
members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE there are nearly $90 in discounts
available! More on Monday.
NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET SHOWS AND STUFF
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear
just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form, in chronological
order where possible, and linked to a full article on the CABARET
NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website.

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send
in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly
showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis
for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing.
Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to
be sure that these discounts will be honored. Any member who is denied
a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me
at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but
I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts
in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.
ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or
five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD
release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and
do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a
website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the
press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the
four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use
the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues
in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments,
not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send,
instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those
annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting
backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card.
Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click
to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The
more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release
than to hunt and google websites for more information.
We usually run articles about 3 weeks before event
date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks
in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can
only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead
in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:
++ If the event is advertised on the website it will
be repeated in each MONDAY issue of the newsletter
++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in the DISCOUNTS section of each
MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.
++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to
the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major
cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.
++ We also include at least once each week those regular
(monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance,
like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and
the like.
IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information here than you
might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that
for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the
few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances.
To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact
that every issue published is also posted on my website means another
place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google,
etc.) alike.
One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
