HERE & THERE
I can't believe it is November already! It seems like life is rushing as fast as it can towards 2008. It will hit a small speed bump early Sunday morning when we turn out clocks back one hour to Standard Time. It means an extra hour sleep - which about this time I could really use! Tow says in a row I was up at 6:00 am - yesterday to work on a special project and still have time to do my laundry and grocery shopping, and today to work on the newsletter.

I tried to get to bed early last night (read "before midnight") and just made one short foray into midtown and pick up my mail, and then a quick trip (or so I planned) to celebrate Halloween with Daniel out in Queens. I started my return to Manhattan around 10:00 pm and neglected to figure in the fact that the annual Halloween Parade in Manhattan was marching UPTOWN on Sixth Avenue - to about 21st Street (no wonder THE METROPOLITAN ROOM was dark last night - they are on 22nd Street just off Sixth). My normal route back is the "F" train which leaves me at Sixth Avenue and 14th Street, where I catch a #14 bus that drops me off nearly in front of my apartment house on 10th Street & Avenue "C." I was forced to leave the subway station west of Sixth Avenue and walk west to 7th Avenue to catch the eastbound bus. I was chaos everywhere. I had to squeeze behind the crowd along the buildings to get to Seventh, where about 50 people were already waiting for the #14 bus! I got home in a frazzle, at nearly 11:30 pm (normally a 41 minute trip from Jackson Heights to my front door) and had to watch a few episodes of Law & Order to calm me down.

New York City is an exciting place to live if you plan ahead. I could have taken the "L" subway that runs under 14th Street from Sixth Avenue to First Avenue and walked the 3 or 4 blocks to home (or catch the same #14 bus for the last segment of the journey) but I assumed the parade went DOWNTOWN and it would be long gone from the 14th Street area by 10:30 pm.

Observations from the bus ride: In 500 years or so (if we don't cook ourselves to death before then) humans will have very small thumbs - but very flexible and quick ones. There were 7 or 8 people on the long bus ride last night typing furiously with just their thumbs on teeny tiny little keyboards on their cell phones. Oh, and by then we will all need hearing aids - there were another 3 or 4 wearing earphones connected to MP3 players, and I could hear the music from all of them! How loud must it have been for them?

Congratulations to Kate Lotte, who after a 30 year hiatus from the stage was just cast in "A Wonderful Life," the Harnick/Raposo musical based on the Jimmy Stewart movie, at the JOHN ENGEMAN THEATER in Northport, LI. She'll be playing George Bailey's mother-in-law and the show runs from November 29th through December 30th. Kate's new cabaret show, "Vagabond," will debut in January at THE DUPLEX.

I hardly remember Gregory Dawson - it has been many years since I met him. He passed away Sunday, October 21st, of liver failure at New York Hospital. Mr. Dawson was 73. He was a co-founder of MAC (Manhattan Association of Clubs & Cabarets) and longtime impresario at the legendary New York cabaret, THE BALLROOM. Greg Dawson hailed from Winnetka, IL and came to NYC immediately following his graduation from Yale University in 1955. His first job was as a talent coordinator for the "Tex and Jinx" radio show on WOR. His next job was as Special Events Director at the 1964 World's Fair, under Robert Moses. In the early 1970's, Dawson co-managed The Ballroom in Soho before moving it to Chelsea, where it became a leading nightclub, headlining some of the biggest stars in the popular music field, including Peggy Lee, Patti Page, Rosemary Clooney, Margaret Whiting, Eartha Kitt, Martha Ray, Larry Adler, Jack Jones, Estelle Parsons, Charles Pierce, Helen Schneider, Jo Sullivan Loesser, Blossom Dearie, and Johnnie Ray. The Ballroom also ushered in new careers, including those of Jane Olivor, Mary Cleere Haran and Baby Jane Dexter. His uncle was the American abstract pioneer, Manierre Dawson.

Greg had been painting and sculpting his entire adult life and for the past dozen years since he left the cabaret scene, he has devoted himself full time to creating a large body of work, well over a thousand paintings and some 250 sculptures and wall pieces. His paintings were primarily done in watercolor and acrylic, and the sculptures are constructions in wood and a variety of other materials. Some of the sculptures have been cast in bronze, utracal and epoxy. Recently he had explored areas of architectural design elements, producing several friezes and a series of 24 knobs that can be produced in any number of materials, including the whole array of casting metals. He has also received several commissions for some monumental outdoor sculptures and large murals. Greg Dawson is survived by his sister Hillary Schlesinger.

There will be a memorial for Gregory Dawson on Greg on Sunday November 18th 3:00 pm at THE YALE CLUB (50 Vanderbilt Avenue, NYC - alongside Grand Central Station). Open to the public.

By the way, the last interview that Mr. Dawson gave before his death was for John Hoglund for John's AFTER DARK column on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website regarding the death of another cabaret pioneer, John Wallowitch. There should be a new AFTER DARK column coming this weekend for the website.

We're still looking for sponsors for both John's AFTER DARK section and Carla Gordon's HEARTLAND CABARET section on the website. Sponsorship is via special exclusive SUPER SIDE-BAR ads on these pages. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website for details. Proceeds from the ads go to support these sections.

Have a Christmas Holiday CD for sale? Every year we post a page showing the CD covers of holiday CDs with a link to where they can be purchased. I put up last year's HOLIDAY CD page as a start - please check it out. If your HOLIDAY-THEMED CD isn't shown, send me an e-mail and we will add it. And if your CD is shown but is no longer available or has been reissued with a different cover (these things happen) let me know as well. The link to the page is on the front or home page on the website. This is a free listing - you don't need to be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to be included (but that sure would be nice).

Speaking of memberships, we didn't make it to 400 members by the official deadline of October 31st - we are 12 members shy (including 4 memberships that I know are in the mail) of 400. I announced this on the message board last night and got a pledge from a current member for a donation of $200 to purchase 10 memberships if we reach 190 members - and we could assign those memberships to anyone we wished. There may be a few more in the mail not received yet and I won't get to the mailbox until 5:00 pm, but if there are 2 more memberships there than expected (or if two come in via PayPal today), the offer is good. If you can't afford a membership this year - or at least at this time - let me know. It may not happen, but get your name in anyway. Else I will award the memberships to charter members who have not rejoined yet this year.

For those coming to NYC for the CABARET CONVENTION which starts on Monday night at FREDERICK P. ROSE HALL (Columbus Circle, Broadway at 60th Street, NYC - CenterCharge: 212-721-6500 - http://www.jazzatlincolncenter.org/ ), check out the club schedules (and the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE Diary) for shows to catch after the convention shows or on those nights where you don't have tickets to the MABEL MERCER events. Many rooms have delayed their second shows to start at 10:00 or 10:30 pm to accommodate convention attendees. Just keep in mind that cab fares have risen considerably since last year's convention - and while it is possible and advisable to use mass transportation, for some parts of town you may need to transfer once or twice along the way. While the subways these days are safe (less crime actually than above ground) and clean, they are also confusing. Plan ahead.

I am jumping ahead of the official press release, due on Monday I am told, but plans are nearly complete and the opening is coming soon for the cabaret triplex, THE BROADWAY BABY BISTRO & PIANO LOUNGE at THE BROADWAY COMEDY CLUB (318 West 53rd Street, NYC - 212-757-5808 - http://www.broadwaybabybistro.com/ ) - this is between Eighth & Ninth Avenues. I have a meeting/interview scheduled there tonight (no SETH RUDETSKY CHATTERBOX tonight) at 6:00 pm to get a tour of the club(s) and meet Al Martin, the owner, as well as booking manager Donald Schaffer and consultant John Hoglund (I know those two anyway). I am also going to try to sell them some ads as well. I'll give you a full report in the Monday issue. The club will open with the return of OUR SINATRA with previews starting on Friday November 16th and official opening on Thanksgiving weekend, Friday the 23rd of November. More details on this on Monday as well. Check out the website (http://www.broadwaybabybistro.com/ ) for a partial schedule already in place.

Here's an interesting "sidebar" on the above. Several weeks ago I got an e-mail from Al Martin asking if he could take out a "classified ad" to find someone to manage a cabaret space he was developing. I explained that we don't have "classified ads" per se (we actually tried this once in the print editions many years ago), but that he was free to post something on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE message board. He listed his phone number, and that's how Al met John met Donald. If fact in less than a week Al begged me to remove the item from the message board - his phone never stopped ringing. So I am preparing a new ad campaign - featuring Donald and John, that will read "I Found My Job On CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE."

Whew - I just realized it is 1:30 pm - an hour later than usual for sending out the newsletter. Craig Coursey, who always reads the newsletter while at lunch to see if I have included his name, must be starving. So off it goes.

More news on Monday.

MONDAY - DECEMBER 3rd

A HOLIDAY CABARET IN CHICAGO DECEMBER 3rd
Save the date - if you are in the Chicago area - Monday, December 3rd. Thanks when CCP (Chicago Cabaret Professionals - http://www.chicagocabaret.org/ ) will hold their 9th annual "A Holiday Cabaret" at 7:30 pm at DAVENPORT'S (1383 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, IL - 773-278-1830 - http://www.davenportspianobar.com/ ). The show will benefit Teen Living Programs and Save The Children. There was a time when cabaret organizations all over - including Australia - held this annual event on behalf of children's' support programs, but little by little interest waned (especially here in NYC after 9-11). I believe that CABARET WEST (http://www.cabaretwest.org/ ) also continues this annual tradition. More details are coming.

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing. Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to be sure that these discounts will be honored. Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.

Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release than to hunt and google websites for more information.

We usually run articles about 3 weeks before event date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:

++ If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in each MONDAY issue of the newsletter

++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in the DISCOUNTS section of each MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.

++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.

++ We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.

IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike.
