HERE & THERE
The 18th Annual NYC Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention opens tonight
at FREDERICK P. ROSE HALL at JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER - which isn't
even part of the traditional LINCOLN CENTER complex at all but instead
a few blocks south in the new TIME WARNER CENTER complex located at
Columbus Circle. See the article above for details on each night of
the Monday through Thursday convention.
It is interesting to note that most of the cabaret
venues appear to be ignoring the event - or maybe it is the performers.
In years past one would find post-10 o'clock events in nearly every
room in town offering cabaret entertainment to convention goers
after the Mercer shows ended. Many performers coming in from out
of town to appear at the convention would arrange with the local
clubs here to perform in these shows. But that is hardly the case
this year.
The ALGONQUIN OAK ROOM even used to schedule a special
"Cabaret Cavalcade" during convention week, with one or two top
performers each night. Folks used to walk after the Mercer shows
the two blocks from the former convention site at THE TOWN HALL
on 43rd Street west of Sixth Avenue to the OAK ROOM on 44th Street
east of Sixth, and these OAK ROOM shows were usually sell-outs.
But the distance from Columbus Circle, and the complexity of the
route if you plan to use public transportation, makes getting to
a post-convention show strictly for folks who own their own car
or are native New Yorkers for whom the route is much more familiar.
This year it is "business as usual" for the OAK ROOM - Paula West
is appearing there this week, with late shows only scheduled (as
far as I could find out) for Friday & Saturday nights - the convention
ends on Thursday.
As far as I could find, only a few local cabaret rooms
are offering anything special for this year's conventioneers. Jazz
aficionados of course have a much wider choice of late night performances
to catch.
THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (which has post-9:30 pm shows
nearly every night normally) is presenting Lennie Watt's Barry Manilow
tribute tonight at 10:30 pm. If you have not seen this show yet
(it ran during the summer) and even if you have seen the show, this
is the one to catch this week - big-band sound, back-up singers
and all your favorite Manilow songs plus some really fun-filled
patter. San Francisco's Terese Genecco is performing Wednesday &
Thursday at 10:30 during the convention. Bill Cooper, also from
SF is there on Tuesday night, making his NYC cabaret debut.
And dear old (and I am certain he doesn't mind I say
old) songwriter Ray Jessell (from LA) is appearing Thursday night
at 11:00 pm at DON'T TELL MAMA. If you have not experienced a Jessell
show, this is the place for you - providing you want to end your
evening on a happy note. It is an intimate gathering of friends
with Ray singing and playing many of his witty gems, including a
few ballads. Very interesting that my friend Daniel has become a
died-in-the-wool Ray Jessell fan, because Ray's lyrics are so filled
with puns and double-entendre lines, and Daniel's command of English
is a bit limited. But he loves the show (it changes from week to
week) and if we are in the neighborhood of MAMA'S on Thursdays he
insists we catch Ray's show.
Another old timer, Ricky Ritzel is at DILLON'S on
Thursday night from 10:00 pm until whenever (sort of a "quit when
the room is empty event). Mr. Ritzel's knowledge of music of all
sorts, plus a keenly sharpened wit, always makes for an entertaining
event. And there is always a special guest or two. Details in the
calendar listing below.
Jim Caruso's CAST PARTY is happening tonight at BIRDLAND
with an assortment of performers - great, not so great and never-will-be
great - taking the open mic. Show gets going around 10:30 or so
and is usually sold out.
THE CAFE CARLYLE has Steve Tyrell performing Tuesday
through Saturday nights to the end of the year, with a late show
at 10:45 pm on Thursdays as well, but come on, a $105 cover? And
you must order dinner? Oh, the cover goes up to $130 in December
(plus dinner). Steve Tyrell? Am I missing something here? Rumor
is that the Cafe will close or change entertainment format at the
end of the year - perhaps management wants to prove there is no
interest in cabaret by imposing these prices.
Still no official press release - it will probably come in this afternoon
after the issue goes out - about the new quad-plex cabaret venue opening
in midtown - THE BROADWAY BABY BISTRO & PIANO LOUNGE (318 West 53rd
Street, NYC - TKTS: 212-239-6200 - http://www.broadywaybabybistro.com/
), but we did get a release about the OUR SINATRA show that opens
in previews on Friday November 16th and officially opens on Tuesday
the 20th - see details in the calendar listing below.
I actually had a "guided" tour of the place on Thursday
night and this nightspot has terrific potential - and with Don Schaffer
doing the booking and John Hoglund (who writes the AFTER DARK column
on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website) serving as advisor-consultant
this place should fulfill its potential. There are actually 4 rooms
- a piano lounge area (piano arriving this week, they told me, opening
date TBA), the 150-seat+ Songbook Theater (where OUR SINATRA plays),
plus THE MUSIC BOX THEATER and the CHICAGO CITY LIMITS ROOM, two
more intimate spaces but still seating 75+ each.
The cabaret events share the space with THE BROADWAY
COMEDY CLUB (http://www.broadwaycomedyclub.com/
). I can't wait to see the place when all the renovations are complete
- sound & lighting upgraded, redecorating, etc. More to be revealed
with the official press release, I am sure, but you can check out
the website to see some shows are already scheduled for the middle
of November including "jazz-comedy chick" Joan Crowe, harpist Jose
Luis, Rick Skye's "Slice O' Minnelli", musical comedienne Jen Scheer,
musical theater veteran Frank Torren, singer/songwriter Tim Sullivan,
jazz thrush Barbara Lusch and more.
I guess everyone knows by now that DON'T TELL MAMA is under new ownership/management.
That's the reason for the new website address (http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/
). Nearly everything remains the same - Sidney Myer (who will be receiving
an award at the convention this week) is still booking manager, etc.
but there already has been one exciting and important improvement
made: that pesky leak in the ceiling of the back cabaret room that
would pour copious amounts of water on the heads of performers and
patrons appears to have been finally stopped. For seven years there
have been attempts to fix the leak, which caused chaos and grief (and
the relocation of not a few shows), but now after just a few weeks
under new ownership the leak appears to be fixed!
Are you one of those folks who doesn't make a reservation and just
shows up hoping to get a seat? We spoke before about people who make
a reservation but don't show up, but just as harmful to cabaret and
performers are folks that plan to attend but don't take the time to
make a reservation. Take tonight, for example. Joan Crowe's benefit
show tonight at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN (details in the calendar listings
below) might be cancelled tonight because so few people (and her fans
are legion) have bothered to make reservations. Yes, many rooms have
the policy of canceling a show if a certain number of reservations
are not received by a certain time of the performance date. Joan's
show is at 9:30 pm - and remember, it is a benefit! But all her advance
promotion expenses will go down the drain and several people in the
show including herself, who may have skipped other gigs to be in the
show will be truly disappointed and suffer lost income and more. I
am rushing to get this issue out so that you have time to call in
before 1:00 pm - the reservation number is 212-695-6909.

Have a Christmas Holiday CD for sale? Every year we post a page showing
the CD covers of holiday CDs with a link to where they can be purchased.
I put up last year's HOLIDAY CD page as a start - please check it
out. If your HOLIDAY-THEMED CD isn't shown, send me an e-mail and
we will add it. And if your CD is shown but is no longer available
or has been reissued with a different cover (these things happen)
let me know as well. The link to the page is on the front or home
page on the website. This is a free listing - you don't need to be
a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to be included (but that sure would
be nice).
I did get a few new CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members over the past few
days including Scott Siegel (I asked him if Craig Coursey's joining
had anything to do with his joining and he replied "Craig who?"),
but not enough to make our 400 goal. Not a little discouraging because
I put so much effort and work into this "operation." We are already
four months into the membership year, and there are several good friends
of mine who for some reason decided not to rejoin. And 2100 subscribers
of this newsletter who have still good reason to join as well but
haven't. A basic SILVER membership is still just $20 - just click
on the button at the top of every page of the website labeled JOIN
HERE for details on all the levels and benefits of membership, as
well as a way you can join instantly using PayPal and a credit card.
Hay folks, this isn't the CAFE CARLYLE cover charge were talking about
here - we're talking $20.
I had to curtail all my cabaret-going activities over the weekend
- I simply didn't have the funds. If I hadn't gone grocery shopping
earlier in the week, I probably would be starving right now as well.
(I am going to get my own FOOD-TV show on how to eat in NYC on just
$15 a day.) I borrowed $60 from a friend on Thursday night and made
it last until yesterday - and still got to see a few cabaret shows
anyway (thanks to Daniel chipping in for the tips), but not all the
ones I planned. So, apologies to Jeanne MacDonald, Elizabeth Doyle,
Greg Purnhagen, Barry Lloyd, Christine Pedi, Karen Saunders, David
Pellegrene and even Trudi Mann. I had great plans to see your shows
but simply not the where-with-all. For some I have a chance to get
to see your shows in the days and weeks to come, but I really feel
bad about the "one-night-only" events I missed.
I did get to four shows at DON'T TELL MAMA - on Thursday night I saw
(for about the 6th time) Donna Moore's COUGAR CABARET show. It has
been an evolutionary process, but I must say that this weeks show
was beyond 100% - lots of original songs, some really tight patter,
great vocals and "ready for prime time." It plays one more performance
this month on the 29th. This show is going places - check it out!
Then, at Daniel's insistence (and his offer to give
the tip) we hung around for Ray Jessell's show at 11:00 pm (see
above).
I was back on Friday at 7:00 pm for Patricia Fitzpatrick's
show, also at DON'T TELL MAMA (lest you feel this is the only club
I go to, please note that my mail is delivered to a MailBoxes Etc
store just around the corner, and I really had to see if there were
any checks delivered). If there ever was a show I really needed
to see at this particular moment in my life, this was the one. I
have know Pat for several years - for some years she worked for
the Provincetown Tourist Board, and I met her at one of John O'Neil's
CABARETFESTS where she performed for the first time since leaving
show business many years earlier to raise a family. Pat lost her
husband a few years ago, and this show was her first to be performed
in nearly four years - and this was its NYC premiere. The title
of the show was "Single, Again ... and this time it's not my fault"
and the musical director was Boston favorite Brian Patton. It was
a poignant yet funny and entertaining look at Pat's recovery from
her the death of her very loving husband, rebuilding her life, and
finally dating again - and her return to performing. It was absolutely
beautiful - one of the finest cabaret show I have seen this year
or ever, because it demonstrated to perfection was a cabaret show
is all about. I will write more on this show in the next issue -
I have to get this newsletter off in 10 minutes and have one more
show to write about.
And that show was Molly Pope's amazing show "The Divalution
of Molly Pope" with Ray Fellman at the piano. If any show deserves
to make a clean sweep of MAC, BISTRO and NIGHTLIFE awards, this
one does. The lady is incredible - 2 parts Bette Midler, 1 part
Ethel Merman, and most importantly 1 part original, unduplicated
and unsurpassable Molly Pope. You can't keep your eyes off of her
- and you are advised to listen to every word and every nuance of
the lyric. This cabaret newcomer is incredible as actress, singer
and entertainer. I don't know if she has any upcoming shows planned
but if you see her name on a future schedule, make a reservation.
Well, I've really rambled on today - and now I must send this off
but first a SPECIAL BULLETIN - Sue Matsuki has added her name to the
list of performers appearing tonight in Joan Crowe's benefit show
at the LAURIE BEECHMAN at 9:30 pm - that phone number again is 212-695-6909.
Now I must run - I finally hear the sound of two checks clearing today
at my bank - that's why I prefer PayPal.
Until Thursday, then.
NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear
just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form and linked to a full
article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate location on the
website. Events advertised on the website will be mentioned in every
issue, and events offering discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE are mentioned in every MIDWEEK issue.

MONDAY - DECEMBER 3rd
A HOLIDAY CABARET IN CHICAGO DECEMBER 3rd
Save the date - if you are in the Chicago area - Monday, December
3rd. Thanks when CCP (Chicago Cabaret Professionals - http://www.chicagocabaret.org/
) will hold their 9th annual "A Holiday Cabaret" at 7:30 pm at DAVENPORT'S
(1383 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, IL - 773-278-1830 - http://www.davenportspianobar.com/
). The show will benefit Teen Living Programs and Save The Children.
There was a time when cabaret organizations all over - including Australia
- held this annual event on behalf of children's' support programs,
but little by little interest waned (especially here in NYC after
9-11). I believe that CABARET WEST (http://www.cabaretwest.org/
) also continues this annual tradition. More details are coming.
ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or
five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD
release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and
do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a
website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the
press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the
four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use
the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues
in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments,
not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send,
instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those
annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting
backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card.
Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click
to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The
more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release
than to hunt and google websites for more information.
We usually run articles about 2 to 3 weeks before
event date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about
4 weeks in advance. Because of the large number of items received,
we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too
far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once"
rule:
+++ If the event is advertised on the website it will
be repeated in every issue of the newsletter
+++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each MID-WEEK issue of the
newsletter.
+++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to
the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major
cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.
+++ We also include at least once each week those
regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each
performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY
SHOWCASE and the like.
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please
keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about
their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show
is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also
posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places
where the show information can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
