TODAY'S TOP STORY

BOB EGAN'S COSMOPOLITAN CLUB CLOSES SUDDENLY
Minutes after we sent out the Monday, November 5th issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE we received an e-mail announcing that BOB EGAN'S COSMOPOLITAN CLUB AT THE NEW HOPE INN (6426 Lower York Road, New Hope, PA - 215-862-5221 - http://www.thecosmopolitanclub.com/ ) had closed without advance notice and that all scheduled shows and events had been cancelled, including the Monday Night Showcase show that was to have been presented that night. All processed ticket sales for any canceled shows will be refunded. Mr. Egan did write that a new location(s) would be found as quickly as possible, and hopefully many of the announced upcoming shows would be offered in the near future. A schedule of shows and locations will be sent out and updated on the web site ASAP. We await further details and will certainly pass along any new information as received.

HERE & THERE
Sometimes it doesn't pay to hurry - a lesson I learned more then two years ago when my hurry to get to a cabaret event on time caused my downfall - literally - tripping on the top step of the subway stairway and tearing all the knee ligaments in my knee, necessitating an operation and my first overnight stay in a hospital since the day I was born. Thus it was that Monday's issue, sent out early to promote a show, missed the news posted in the TODAY'S TOP STORY about the closing of the nearly brand-new COSMOPOLITAN CLUB in New Hope. Everyone wishes Bob Egan and crew the best as they search for a new location for the club - Bob's former club ODETTE'S, located right along the Delaware River, was closed after suffering repeated flooding for several years. The item came in exactly 2 minutes after I sent out the last batch of newsletters (because of restraints by my web hosting service to eliminate spam, I have to send out the newsletters in batches of under 250, so I actually send the same issue out 12 times).

While I am on the subject of newsletter subscribers, an event sneaked up on me last week. I was so busy promoting memberships in order to reach 400 members by the end of October, I didn't realize that my subscription list had finally surpassed the 2500 mark! The count has hovered at about 2400 for nearly four years, then slowing creeping upwards. I have no idea who the 2500th subscriber was, since it is all automated - but whoever you are out there, welcome aboard.

And also on that same subject, I have been reorganizing my mailing lists in preparation to switching to a new e-mail program - all the 2007-2008 CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members have been moved to the new program as they join, and then I added all members from previous years going back to 2001 when the membership system started. Now I am cleaning up that list to remove "dead wood" as it were, before moving the rest of the subscribers over and using that program to send the newsletters out in the future. I plan the switch over the Thanksgiving weekend - we won't be sending out an issue on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22nd and will combine the two issues on Monday the 19th. That will give me a whole week - usually a slow cabaret-news week anyway, to make the conversion.

Tonight is the last night of the MABEL MERCER CABARET CONVENTION (details below). Less than 50 performers took part in this year's event, since the number of shows had been cut back to only 4 - when these conventions began 18 years or so ago there were 6 days of shows, and probably double the number of performance segments. And at that time tickets were as low as $10! And the event was held in early to mid October.

Have a Christmas Holiday CD for sale? Every year we post a page showing the CD covers of holiday CDs with a link to where they can be purchased. I put up last year's HOLIDAY CD page as a start - please check it out. If your HOLIDAY-THEMED CD isn't shown, send me an e-mail and we will add it. And if your CD is shown but is no longer available or has been reissued with a different cover (these things happen) let me know as well. The link to the page is on the front or home page on the website. This is a free listing - you don't need to be a member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to be included (but that sure would be nice).

While some folks should "wake up and smell the coffee" I have decided that I should remember my own motto and wake up and count the sparrows. It has been a chaotic, busy and event filled week or so - my own personal live roller-coaster-like reality show. There were several times in the past 10 days where I was so discouraged that I considered retiring from my retirement - ready to announce the end of this 17 year old project called CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. I won't bore you with the details (and some of the details are so personal even I wouldn't tell you them in a million years), so all I will say that events over the past 24 hours have given me a completely new outlook on what I thought was a dark period and now know it was just another "rite of passage." Next time I have a spell like that I shall remember to slide on down to the bottom of my newsletters and remind myself of my own personal motto/mantra.

Ads and banners of all sizes, prices and shapes are available on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - costing from as little as $25 per week (2 week minimum on all ads) to our super special "2000 page" super-sidebar ads running $125 per week (price drops to $100 per week after the first 2 weeks). There is an advertising plan available to meet just about any budget, and members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE get discounts and rebates as well - SILVER members get $20 off their first banner in a membership year and GOLD members a 20% discount on all ads in a membership year (discounts/rebates do not apply to the $25 sidebar ads). Your ad could be seen up to 6000 times a day - by folks interested in cabaret. And an ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website means your event or CD is mentioned in every issue of the newsletter, sent out twice a week to 2500 (note we dropped the "nearly") subscribers as long as the ad or banner is running. As I say, it is the ad program that keeps on giving!

We're still looking for sponsors for both John's AFTER DARK section and Carla Gordon's HEARTLAND CABARET section on the website. Sponsorship is via special exclusive SUPER SIDE-BAR ads on these pages. Click on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website for details. Proceeds from the ads go to support these sections.

Well, a huge project I was working on for the past three weeks is 99 percent completed and now I can get back to about a dozen other projects I had to set aside because of deadlines and promises made. I sent several folks a quick reply to their e-mails that I would get back to them when the project was done, so if you are one of those folks, expect some information/answers from me in the next few days. There is a lot on my plate just for today - including simple things like grocery shopping and housecleaning. My desk is overflowing with work. I was able to get pretty much caught up with the membership project - all membership cards except two I have incomplete addresses for and one received overnight have been sent out - if you joined more than a week ago and have not received your card, drop me a line.

Well I loaded this issue with all the usable news items I received for events through the 25th of November - next issue I will probably clean up the last November items and start on the stack of December items. Of course, whatever the date of the event, send it in - there is an item in today's issue for an event tomorrow that just came in overnight!

More news on Monday.

NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET SHOWS AND STUFF
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form, in chronological order where possible, and linked to a full article on the CABARET NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website.

MONDAY - DECEMBER 3rd

A HOLIDAY CABARET IN CHICAGO DECEMBER 3rd
Save the date - if you are in the Chicago area - Monday, December 3rd. Thanks when CCP (Chicago Cabaret Professionals - http://www.chicagocabaret.org/ ) will hold their 9th annual "A Holiday Cabaret" at 7:30 pm at DAVENPORT'S (1383 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, IL - 773-278-1830 - http://www.davenportspianobar.com/ ). The show will benefit Teen Living Programs and Save The Children. There was a time when cabaret organizations all over - including Australia - held this annual event on behalf of children's' support programs, but little by little interest waned (especially here in NYC after 9-11). I believe that CABARET WEST (http://www.cabaretwest.org/ ) also continues this annual tradition. More details are coming.

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing. Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to be sure that these discounts will be honored. Any member who is denied a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.

Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the press releases I receive before using the item on my website or in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just click here: http://www.svhamstra.com/PressRelease1.shtml and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.

Just send in your press release or listings request in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments, not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send, instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card. Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release than to hunt and google websites for more information.

We usually run articles about 3 weeks before event date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:

++ If the event is advertised on the website it will be repeated in each MONDAY issue of the newsletter

++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in the DISCOUNTS section of each MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.

++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.

++ We also include at least once each week those regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and the like.

IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep my promise?

I realize that there is probably far more information here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also posted on my website means another place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google, etc.) alike.

One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007.
