HERE & THERE
Well, the 18th Annual NYC Cabaret Convention has come and gone, making
barely a ripple on the local cabaret scene, as far as I could tell.
I had to search high and low, far and wide to find someone who attended
all four shows (down from the original 7 show series of a few years
ago. I am told that there was plenty of seating available at all the
performances this year - only a few years ago several nights were
sold out in advance. Because of problems mentioned in the last issue,
I was unable to attend any of the events this year. However, from
reports so far, this was not a particularly exciting series. If you
were at any or all the show, I would appreciate your reactions. Perhaps
my other correspondents were too harsh in their criticisms.
Several have noted the things they miss with the new
convention location, especially the chance to purchase CDs before,
during the intermission and after the shows. Also, the usual "schmoozing"
before and after the shows is difficult since the auditorium is
not on street level. And the performance hall, to many, seems cold
- lacking the intimacy many felt at the old location at THE TOWN
HALL.
Finally there was one person who felt that, with fewer
shows and the repeat performances by several on the bill, a lot
of really good talent was not presented - especial with half of
one night being given over to a single performer. Their estimate
was that at least a dozen additional performers could have had their
"moment in the sun" if this had not been the case.
Instead of the convention shows, I did get to see several really terrific
shows these past few days. On Thursday night I was at the Laurie Beechman
at 7:00 pm for Gabriella Stravelli's show. Is there anything that
this gal CAN'T sing? I an amazing display of a variety of vocal styles,
Ms. Stravelli surprised me again and again. The unfamiliar songs were
performed in such a way you wanted to hear them again - and the familiar
ones were sung with such style it was as though one was hearing them
for the first time - or should I say understanding the for the first
time (I often get the same thrill when listening to Barb Jungr sing
a "standard"). Most striking was the way Ms. Stravelli interacted
with her band - none of the teasing and smart-alec chit chat, but
real communication - verbal and non verbal. It was though she and
the band were one unit. You could see that she truly loved and appreciated
they extensive talents, and they returned the complement by doing
their very best to make the show exciting and memorable. From belt
to ballad, from songs of anger to love, Ms. Gabriella shone. She performs
at the Laurie Beechman once more this month, on Saturday November
17th at 9:30 pm.
That same night, I was at Don't Tell Mama at 8:30
pm - fortunately it is a short walk from the Beechman, for Chris
Hamilton's show. I feel bad that by the time you are reading this,
Chris' 6-show run at Mama's will be nearly ended - he has just two
performances left of his show "I Have A Small Confession," on Tuesday
November 13th at 9:00 pm and Thursday November 15th at 11:00 pm.
This handsome Welsh-born, London based singer/songwriter/pianist
has a clean. crisp vocal delivery and is talented both as singer
and pianist (he demonstrates his classical piano training with one
of the songs in his show). He was joined for a few numbers by another
very talented Brit, singer/dancer Shimi Goldman. This was a totally
entertaining event - one I can highly recommend.
I talked about Ray Jessell's terrific JESSELL SINGS
JESSEL show last time around, so suffice it to say, since Ray was
at Chris' show and Chris was going to Ray's show, Daniel and I returned
to Mama's after a quick dinner at 11:00 pm. Unfortunately, due to
train delays on both the E and the L lines, and missing my every-30-minute
bus on 14th Street it was nearly 2:00 am when I got home.
Another fantastic show I saw over the past few days
was Jeanne MacDonald's Peggy Lee tribute show at The Metropolitan
Room on Saturday night at 10:00 pm. I can sum up the show in one
word: "Flawless!" I have been a true-blue Jeanne MacDonald fan since
I heard her NYC debut so many years ago at Eighty Eight's - as with
most newcomers in those days, Jeanne was given a Sunday afternoon
slot - and fortunately for me, I lived at that time in the neighborhood
and I think I attended every performance! Jeanne has come a long
way - a Saturday night at the Metropolitan Room and a totally sold-out
show! It was an awesome performance, and again I was wearing "goose-bumps"
nearly the whole hour. I am addicted not just to her vocals (so
fresh, so clean, so fully packed) but also to her charming, honest
delivery. And you know right away she loves what she is doing, and
would give this kind of "dead-on" performance if there were just
6 in the audience. Rick Jensen has come up with some creative and
original arrangements for this show and their's is a truly a incomparable
pairing. Just one more show in this series - this coming Saturday
the 17th at 10:00 pm. By the way this show sold out on the 10th,
best to reserve your seats today (phones are open from noon on at
this club).
For those who have seen be the past several weeks without my little
iPod shuffle, I am happy to report that the little guy has returned.
Nearly two months ago I left the shuffle on the table at Butterfield
8, when I attended Carolyn Lee Jones' show - Ray Mann (or better known
as Mr. Trudi Mann) tried to catch me outside when he noticed it, but
in one of those rare happenings lately, my bus rolled up just as I
got to the bus stop and I was gone. Trudi and I have been playing
"show tag" ever since - we never seemed to catch the same show on
the same night - except once, and that night she got a ride from someone
into town and the iPod was in her car at home. So Sunday, being a
beautiful fall day - sunny and breezy, I headed uptown to catch another
famous Trudi Mann Fabulous Open Mic brunch.
Nothing happens by accident, as they say, and I had
a chance to meet a fantastic trio from Nashville, TN who were there.
Actually I was given the only open seat left - the place was packed
- and it was at their table. Known as "Moonlight & Memories" the
trio is composed of Lisa Wood (who also accompanies at the piano),
Carole Shaw and Danny Winchell (originally from NYC and a relative
of Walter Winchell). Most inspiring was the fact that Danny is 80
and Carol is 70 (Lisa is the kid in the group, in her mid-40s).
You can catch them tonight at Jim Caruso's Cast Party at Birdland.
They did their set before I got there, but Trudi asked them to come
back to the mic and sing one more so I could enjoy their great harmonies.
Don't let the word "Nashville" fool you - their style is more "easy
listening" than "country." And to top it off, Danny has a radio
show in Nashville on Fridays from 2:00 to 3:00 pm on WAMB-AM (1200)
which is also "streamed" on his website http://www.dannywinchell.com/
.
Also at the brunch (folks who I recognized) were Charles
Cochran (appearing at the Metropolitan Room on Wednesdays at 7:30
pm through December 5th), Karen Oberlin (at the Metropolitan Room
this Tuesday the 13th at 7:00 pm), Joe Regan Jr., Henry Dee, and
many more. Me and my iPod headed back home around 4:00 pm - and
believe it or not, it was still nearly fully charges so I listened
to DC Anderson's song "I Am Still" (my favorite) for the first time
in weeks - it has been on my iPod from the first time I heard it
- the other tracks change but this track stays.
When I got home I immediately loaded both Marcus Simeone's
and Cynthia Crane's new CDs on the iPod, and had a chance to hear
them for the first time when I went out to Queens later to celebrate
the birthday of a friend.
John Hoglund reports that he has a "hum-dinger" of a column almost
ready, and it should be up on the website sometime tomorrow. It includes
an exclusive interview with Chita Rivera, currently appearing at Feinstein's.
"Our Sinatra" opens Songbook Theater at the Broadway Baby Bistro &
Piano Lounge showrooms in previews this Friday night, the 16th, with
Joan Crowe the opening act at the Music Box in the same complex on
Saturday night the 17th (details on both shows below). Jose Luis and
his harp are in the Music Box on Sunday with a full schedule developing
in the rooms for the rest of November and into December. See the website
at http://www.broadwaybabybistro.com/
for schedule and event descriptions.
Just a note, with Thanksgiving falling on a Thursday this year (as
it does every year) there will be no mid-week issue of CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE on the 22nd of November.
Oh dear, it is past 12:30 pm and I have to leave here at 2:00 pm for
an appointment uptown, so if I want a nap I have to quit now.
Until Thursday, then.

ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER, BLOG AND WEBSITES
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or
five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD
release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and
do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a
website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the
press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the
four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use
the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues
in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments,
not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send,
instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those
annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting
backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card.
Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click
to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The
more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release
than to hunt and google websites for more information.
We usually run articles about 2 to 3 weeks before
event date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about
4 weeks in advance. Because of the large number of items received,
we can only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too
far ahead in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once"
rule:
+++ If the event is advertised on the website it will
be repeated in every issue of the newsletter
+++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in each MID-WEEK issue of the
newsletter.
+++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to
the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major
cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.
+++ We also include at least once each week those
regular (monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each
performance, like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY
SHOWCASE and the like.
IT'S TIME TO GO
At the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information
here than you might be able to digest in one reading, but please
keep in mind that for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE is one of the few publications that spread the word about
their shows and performances. To them, that item about their show
is most important, and the fact that every issue published is also
posted on my website and on the blog means two additional places
where the show information can be found by fans and search engines
(Google, etc.) alike. Your banner ads and membership donations make
this all possible.
One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
expired on Thursday, July 5th 2007. You can renew (or get a new) membership
almost instantly on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (http://www.svhamstra.com/
), using a credit card. Just click on the button at the top of every
page of the website marked JOIN HERE. Or you can mail your check,
