TODAY'S TOP STORY
BROADWAY BABY BISTRO & PIANO LOUNGE PREVIEWS UPCOMING SHOWS
Three new cabaret rooms and a piano lounge are set to open at the
renowned BROADWAY COMEDY CLUB in theater district under the banner
of BROADWAY BABY BISTRO & PIANO LOUNGE (318 West 53rd Street, NYC
- 212-757-5808 - http://www.broadwaybabybistro.com/
). The newly expanded music programs will take place in three separate
performance spaces: the 170 seat SONGBOOK THEATER, the 80 seat CHICAGO
CITY LIMITS ROOM and the more intimate 65 seat MUSIC BOX located off
the piano lounge.
The off-Broadway hit "Our Sinatra" returns to New
York for an exclusive engagement and will begin previews on Friday
November 16th and officially open on Tuesday, November 20th in the
170 seat SONGBOOK THEATER. Additional scheduled cabaret events include
a musical tribute to the late John Wallowitch as well as some of
cabaret's most popular artists including: Joan Crowe, Douglas Ladnier,
Jose Luis, Barbara Rosene & Gregory Moore, Marcus Simeone, Rick
Skye, Tim Sullivan and Darius de Haas. An ongoing Broadway Cares/Equity
Fights AIDS concert series is planned for the inaugural season featuring
celebrated Broadway and cabaret artists to be announced.
A bistro-style menu featuring some of old New York
favorites will include Nathan's Hot Dogs, White Castle Hamburgers,
Junior's Cheese Cake as well as tasty salads, light dishes and very
special dessert treats. There is a full complement of wines, special
cabaret cocktails, domestic and imported beers, soft drinks, cappuccino,
coffee and tea.
Club owner Al Martin has made a special offer to the
cabaret audiences. Patrons attending any cabaret show are cordially
invited to stay for any of the comedy shows (subject to availability)
at no cover charge. There will be a 2-drink minimum.
Other items of note on the schedule: The Manhattan
Association of Cabarets (MAC) will hold their annual holiday party
at BROADWAY BABY on Tuesday, December 4th. The club will also take
part in the 2008 JVC JAZZ FESTIVAL with the first "Inner City Jazz
Festival" produced by John Hoglund and Don Schaffer. A Sunday musical
brunch series will be announced shortly in the piano lounge with
a special menu. In the coming weeks, The Broadway Baby Piano Lounge
will open with a staff of new and familiar faces from the club circuit
on hand.
This expansion is currently in progress and state-of-art
lighting and sound equipment is being installed as well as painting
and chic changes prior to opening. Due to the enormity of these
changes, Broadway Baby will not announce its official grand opening
gala until all changes are complete. See the website at http://www.broadwaybabybistro.com/
for more details.

HERE & THERE
I have no idea when this issue will be sent out, and if it is quite
late in the afternoon, a few of the articles usually included will
be incomplete. You see, I have been without DSL service here since
some time Wednesday morning - leaving no access to any e-mail and
no access to the internet for over 30 hours (I am writing this paragraph
at 10:30 am). There is a Verizon truck across the street - hopefully
working on the problem. If service is restored by noon, I will add
any special important items and complete some of the items that I
didn't have complete information on. My fingers are crossed. So far
all I know is that Verizon tells me that they "feel my pain" and doing
its best to restore service - apparently some type of relay thingie
is broken.
There is a laundromat a few blocks away that has several
computers you can use ($5 for 30 minutes) and I did get over there
yesterday afternoon to see if I could check my e-mail - and there
were over 1200 messages waiting (I assume about 90% spam), and I
gave up trying to read them, especially since I had no way to save
them and transport any of the messages home. In fact, should Verizon
reconnect things, it will probably be impossible to sort through
them all in order to include anything in this issue. The message
board was also filled with over 90 spam messages and no one is able
to post any more - I deleted about 40 of them while I was there
in order to open space for new ones but of course there is no way
for me to release any non-spam messages for display until I am on-line
again.
I didn't waste my time fretting, but instead loaded
this issue with all the news items I had on hand, added a bunch
of articles ready to upload to the website as soon as the lines
reopen. I also did some more "fine tuning" on the website itself
- actually changing (thanks to "universal fine & replace") over
2000 pages. Most of the changes no one would notice but me, but
it did help fill the time I would usually spend reading the various
news blogs I am subscribed to.
The rumored eminent demise of DON'T TELL MAMA has been greatly exaggerated
- I met with cabaret booking manager Sidney Myers and one of the new
owners this week, and plans are ongoing for refurbishing, redecorating
and reinvigorating this world-famous piano bar and cabaret. There
may be some times when construction may cause temporary schedule interruptions,
but stay tuned for a "new" Mama's in the months to come. Everyone
is very excited about the changes - and after a few weeks of "shakedown"
and adjustment to the new management, it is business as usual at this
renowned venue.
Meantime at few blocks north at the newest club in town, THE BROADWAY
BABY BISTRO & PIANO LOUNGE, things are buzzing with activity as they
try to get as much preparation done before the opening (in previews)
of OUR SINATRA this Friday (that's tomorrow!) in the SONGBOOK THEATER,
and Joan Crowe's opening night in the MUSIC BOX SHOWROOM on Saturday,
followed by harpist Jose Luis in the same space on Sunday night the
18th. This includes installing new sound and lighting equipment, painting
and decorating, and training staff for the new performances. I will
have an updated report in the Monday issue after I get a chance to
see the updated showrooms myself. I can't wait for those White Castle
burgers they have on the menu! And, a big thanks to club owner Al
Martin, and booking manager Don Schaffer and consultant John Hoglund
for ordering and running a banner on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website.
Ads and banners of all sizes, prices and shapes are available on the
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website - costing from as little as $25 per
week (2 week minimum on all ads) to our super special "2000 page"
super-sidebar ads running $125 per week (price drops to $100 per week
after the first 2 weeks). There is an advertising plan available to
meet just about any budget, and members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
get discounts and rebates as well - SILVER members get $20 off their
first banner in a membership year and GOLD members a 20% discount
on all ads in a membership year (discounts/rebates do not apply to
the $25 sidebar ads). Your ad could be seen up to 6000 times a day
- by folks interested in cabaret. And an ad on the CABARET HOTLINE
ONLINE website means your event or CD is mentioned in every issue
of the newsletter, sent out twice a week to 2500 (note we dropped
the "nearly") subscribers as long as the ad or banner is running.
As I say, it is the ad program that keeps on giving!
We're still looking for sponsors for both John's AFTER DARK section
and Carla Gordon's HEARTLAND CABARET section on the website. Sponsorship
is via special exclusive SUPER SIDE-BAR ads on these pages. Click
on the button marked BANNER INFO at the top of every page on the website
for details. Proceeds from the ads go to support these sections.
Another thing I can't wait for the the BROADWAY UNPLUGGED show on
Monday night November 19th at THE TOWN HALL. Of all the many fantastic
events and shows that Scott Siegel is involved with at this great
space, the annual UNPLUGGED show is my personal favorite. I sort of
think it is a favorite of the performers taking part as well. Scott
tells me that there are good seats still available for the event,
and that Kristine Zbornik and Lorinda Lisitza have just been added
to the cast - and maybe a few more, except that I haven't had access
to my e-mails since Tuesday night. If you have never been to one of
these events by all means get your tickets and go - if you have already
been to one, you have probably already bought a ticket to this year's
show. More details below in the news by the day section.
We might just have passed the 400-member mark - as of this moment,
and without seeing any PayPal membership e-mails - we stand at 397
members! If you have not expressed your appreciation and support for
CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, the newsletter, the website and all the other
projects and things we do and report on by joining as a member, why
not join today. Basic SILVER membership is just $20.
I just checked - it is after 1:00 pm and no internet yet. Fingers
still crossed and believe me, it is hard to type this way. One never
realizes how much one misses "Google" until you don't have it. Several
times in preparing this issue I was missing an important fact - a
phone number, a website address, a bit of biographical data. Normally
I would bring up my web browser, google the topic and have the answer
immediately. Today I don't have that luxury - how did we ever survive
so long without Google? In fact, I had to leave two items out of this
issue because an important piece of information was missing in the
press release - one release merely had the name of the venue where
the event was being performed - no city, no state, no phone number,
no web address.
My friend Daniel sometimes invites one of his friend to come along
to a show we are going to, and I am always secretly thrilled to see
the reactions of someone attending a cabaret show for the first time.
On Tuesday he took his pal, also named Daniel, along to see Alice
Frazier's delightful "Broadway Without Boundaries" show at the LAURIE
BEECHMAN THEATER. Seeing several shows a week as I usually do, I sometimes
get a bit blase about cabaret, and to see someone who is transfixed
by what is happening on stage is a real treat. My advice: Take someone
to a cabaret show this week - let them realize what they've been missing.
I saw two delightful shows on Tuesday - Alice's at
9:00 pm and Karen Oberlin's Andre Previn tribute at THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM at 7:00 pm. Both these ladies have charm and skill in abundance,
and both shows were perfection. I had actually seen them both earlier
this year, and it was a special treat to see them again.
A show I hadn't seen before was Francesca Amari's
show last night at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM at 10:00 pm. Francesca
is sort of "Miss Cabaret" in Western Michigan, and was one of the
"newcomer" performers at my 17th Birthday Party show at THE METROPOLITAN
ROOM in July. She lives in Grand Rapids MI, where I went to college
and resided for about 6 years - during and after college. She sparkled
and shone at the Birthday show, and she repeated those same qualities
in her show last night. With Christopher Denny at the piano and
Barry Kleinbort directing, who could ask for anything more? Her
show "Secretly Square" repeats on Saturday the 24th at 5:00 pm -
I heartily recommend it. Most of the songs are from the 70s & 80s
and the show is a lot of fun - and includes some great stories too.
There was one special thing for me that these three
shows had in common. I always say that cabaret is where new songs
are born and old songs are kept alive. And most importantly, it
is where old songs can be revisited from new perspectives. To hear
a "pop" tune slowed down to a ballad, a familiar song performed
with a different beat, and to revisit a song that was so important
to you years ago - and discover a new meaning you never knew was
there. All three gals did just that!
We are fortunate that we have so many performers in
cabaret who transport us into these new dimensions so regularly
- Baby Jane Dexter, Karen Mason, Wesla Whitfield, Barb Jungr, Tanya
Moberly, Tom Andersen, Scott Coulter and Phillip Officer just to
name a few. I mentioned "cookie cutter" shows in a previous issue
- shows where the performer was so concerned with how they sounded,
they forgot to discover and express exactly what it was they were
singing. Many, many people can "sing pretty." It takes a real artist
to delve into and interpret a song - and make it entertaining.
With the return of my iPod shuffle to my life, I have finally been
able to listen to and enjoy some of the CDs that have accumulated
while the little guy was living on Long Island with Trudi & Ray. And
exactly the same thing came to mind as above - pick up a copy of Marcus
Simeone's CD "At Last" and see what I mean. Sure, this lad can "sing
pretty" but that is only part of the treasure found on this recording.
Move over, DC Anderson - your haunting song "I Am Still" has not been
replaced as a permanent part of my iPod playlist - it has been joined
by Marcus' rendition of "Alone Again" from his new CD. When I listened
to it the first time it was as though I had never heard this old familiar
song before. Other tracks are great as well, but in my initial run
through of the CD this one stood out to me - I hit "repeat" immediately.
Karen Mack was sitting next to me last night at Francesca
Amari's show and I could not help but proclaiming to her after the
show (mainly because she happened to be there) how lucky I feel
to be doing what I am doing - attending live entertainment events
that are performed "cabaret style."
Again, in line with this same topic Scott Barbarino is quite excited
about a new revue he is producing at DILLON'S called "Old Songs of
Peace For A New War"" starring Jen Brooks and Kyra Kozlenko - so much
so that he reached into his own pocket to run a banner on the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website to promote it. I haven't seen it yet - it has
one more scheduled performance left next Wednesday night, the 21st,
at 9:30 pm. Using the music of the late 1960s and early 70s, a time
when the music reflected a longing for peace & love, including songs
from Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, Peter, Paul & Mary, Phil Ochs,
Jefferson Airplane, the Byrds, and so many more the show hopes to
give new meaning to these songs to a new generation.
It's now 2:00 pm. I just ran around the corner to get a sandwich from
the deli - it is miserable outside! Cold, windy and rainy. The Verizon
truck is gone from across the street so I hurried back - no luck.
Maybe they went to lunch themselves, or maybe all the connections
have been repaired and they are off somewhere to set some switches.
I hope my second maybe is correct.
Not only is there no DSL available here, but for the last couple of
weeks my little MAC Mini has been acting up as well. Fortunately it
is under one of those "extended warranty" contracts, and after when
and if this newsletter goes out I am going to make a complete backup
and take it over to the Apple Clinic for evaluation and hopefully
repair. It has been working perfectly since 6:00 am, but when I try
to do something that involves a lot of processing power, it suddenly
overheats - or thinks it is overheating - and shuts down. The AppleCare
folks I talked to yesterday think it is a faulty temperature sensor
that is the problem. We shall know soon. Problem is, I have no substitute
computer, so I can't leave this one "in the shop". Full report on
Monday. And now my computer monitor is flaking out at times. Ugh!
I got two e-mails from folks who attended all four nights of the MABEL
MERCER CABARET CONVENTION last week who were delighted with the event
- one in great detail. I guess folks are much more apt to complain
than to praise, so I am glad I got some positive feedback to counter
several initial responses received earlier.
That is sort of par for the course, actually. I have
lost count of the number of folks who have written to me complaining
that I overlooked their event and then never bothered to thank me
when I did cover one of their shows. I have become quite accustomed
to this so I no longer let it bother me.
Now I have to figure out what to do on Thanksgiving! For many years
I celebrated Thanksgiving Day with a turkey dinner at DANNY'S but
that is not an option this year. Actually, while I was living in Queens
there was a diner down the street from me that had a Thanksgiving
special and we celebrated there. That is an option, but I would prefer
something closer to my new apartment. Now if only my Google was active.....
Well, its 4:45 pm and we're back in business. Actually the DSL line
came up exactly 4:00 pm, but I had to wait until over 6000 emails
downloaded before I could send this issue out! Now to sort through
everything and see what is valid and what is spam. Another real life
episode in my far-too-real life is complete. Talk about tension!
More news on Monday.
NOW FOR SOME NEWS ABOUT CABARET SHOWS AND STUFF
In an effort to cut down on "repeated" events, except for announcements
of programs offered by cabaret membership organizations, and shows
where guests change regularly, cabaret news items will usually appear
just once in the newsletter in abbreviated form, in chronological
order where possible, and linked to a full article on the CABARET
NEWS page of the appropriate location on the website.

REMINDER REGARDING CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE DISCOUNTS
To be eligible for a listing on the MEMBER DEALS page you must send
in your flier, press release and/or other promotional materials clearly
showing the discount offer. That information will be used as the basis
for the MEMBER DEALS page notice, as well as for the newsletter listing.
Please be sure to check with the venue where you are performing to
be sure that these discounts will be honored. Any member who is denied
a properly listed CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE discount should notify me
at once. I cannot guarantee that the discount will be honored, but
I can take steps to contact the parties involved and publish the facts
in the newsletter and remove the listing from the MEMBER DEALS page.
ABOUT CABARET NEWS IN THE NEWSLETTER AND ON THE WEBSITE
How do you get an item posted in the CABARET NEWS section of the CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE website and in the newsletter? It is really quite simple.
Just e-mail me a press release of at least four or
five paragraphs, giving the complete information on your show, CD
release or other cabaret related event. Include photos in jpg or
gif format if available. Please send me complete information - and
do not merely e-mail me a copy of your flier or a reference to a
website. By the way, I usually trim quotes from reviews from the
press releases I receive before using the item on my website or
in the newsletter, so don't count them when putting together the
four or more paragraphs. If you don't have a press release, just
and fill out the information as completely as possible - or use
the items asked for as a guide to the information I need.
Just send in your press release or listings request
in simple txt format if possible (the format I write these issues
in and use for the website), and send any photos as attachments,
not imbedded within the e-mail. And, please, please don't send,
instead of a press release, one of those e-mails with all those
annoying html links (with multi-columns, embedded photos, distracting
backgrounds, etc.) Do not send simply a .jpg of your post card.
Do not send us one of those "e-vite" things that require us to "click
to open" and lead to a web page somewhere. I never open them! The
more information the better - it is easier for me to trim the release
than to hunt and google websites for more information.
We usually run articles about 3 weeks before event
date if possible so it is wisest to send your release about 4 weeks
in advance. Because of the large number of items received, we can
only use news of event just once, so we try not to get too far ahead
in the news. There are a few exceptions to the "just once" rule:
++ If the event is advertised on the website it will
be repeated in each MONDAY issue of the newsletter
++ If the event offers a discount to members of CABARET
HOTLINE ONLINE it will be included in the DISCOUNTS section of each
MID-WEEK issue of the newsletter.
++ Major benefits where ALL proceeds are given to
the charity named will be mentioned in every issue as well as major
cabaret events like cabaret festivals and galas.
++ We also include at least once each week those regular
(monthly, weekly, etc.) events with guests who change each performance,
like SETH'S BROADWAY CHATTERBOX, BOB EGAN'S MONDAY SHOWCASE and
the like.
IT'S TIME TO GO
Near the top of this newsletter I promised that you would read things
in this issue you will not find published anywhere else. Did I keep
my promise?
I realize that there is probably far more information here than you
might be able to digest in one reading, but please keep in mind that
for the performers mentioned, CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE is one of the
few publications that spread the word about their shows and performances.
To them, that item about their show is most important, and the fact
that every issue published is also posted on my website means another
place where they can be found by fans and search engines (Google,
etc.) alike.
One more reminder - all current memberships for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE
